  1. I have the whole suite on multiple platforms. I mostly work on MacOS, but wanted to have an alternative workflow both for travelling and to make use of the iPad as a graphics tablet (replacing an old Wacom). I have found the following problem with linked files accessed separately from iPad and MacOS. Using files on a shared hard drive I opened a DNG file on the iPad, did some edits then saved as a linked file in the same directory as the original. After closing the file I could re-open it on the iPad and see the earlier edits as expected. I tried opening the same .afphoto file on the desktop and it asked me to re-link to the original. I was able to re-link, but this would be a hopeless workflow if I had to do this every time. If I tried the reverse (edit on desktop then try to open .afphoto on iPad) the .afphoto files are all greyed out so I cannot re-link. As an aside, none of these edits show up in recents on the iPad. This is a shame since editing on the iPad was reasonable, allowing me to use Apple pencil. As it stand this is an impossible workflow, so I'll have to stick to the desktop and use a Macbook Pro while travelling.
  2. The auto reload feature of Linked files is quite intriguing. It would be cool if we where able to directly edit the layers and saving over the original file.
  3. Can anybody explain why I cannot stroke a linked eps or svg file (they do have four distinct sides)? I have no problems with png or jpg. Also when using the outline feature in FX it is not like the stroke function where you can change joins, corners, etc. And the pixel size of the stroke has no correlation whatsoever with the point size in the stroke function. The outline stroke should be measured the same way as the stroke function . . . in points
  4. Hi, I want to procedurally distort linked files (topographic maps) like in this example below: The reason it needs to be procedural is because I still have to change line weights and/ or elements on the various maps. I was planning to distort linked files using the new Vector Warp feature in Designer, but it doesn't accept linked files, see feature request: I then moved over to Photo, tried the live projections, but unfortunately, the live projection grid widget does not correspond to the layer's bounding box. I then used the Perspective tool, which is close to what I want, but it converts my file to a pixel layer. This means it is destructive. Are there any other options?
  5. I was hoping to use the vector warp feature on linked PDF and linked PNG files, to distort topographic maps. However, the vector warp feature does not affect linked files. Could this non-destructive workflow please be added for linked files?
  6. I installed Affinity Publisher on a new M1 macbook pro and moved my main work files to icloud to have access from both the new and old machines. File Structure: icloud > project folder > project file (originally c. 7 MB) icloud > project folder > assets > linked image files (total c. 500 MB) Quite soon I noticed that Publisher became very unresponsive and saving a file took a long time. After checking, I saw that the project file was mushrooming with each save. Soon it had grown from around 6 MB to 750 MB plus. Eventually, after some online digging, I tested the following "hack-around" which brought the project file back to its normal size: 1. open resource manager 2. make all (apparently) linked files embedded 3. make all embedded files linked 4. save project file However, the file bloat returns regularly and I have to do the "linked > embedded > linked" trick every few days. Has anyone else come across this bug? Does anyone have any clue what's going on? I suspect some kind of interaction between Publisher and iCloud.
  7. Hi there! I'm looking for advice as I'm about to hand over some files to my assistant to help support me after previously doing a huge project alone. It's a large file – a 320~ page book with text, color, images & different content on every page. Therefore I have my image files linked so that such a large file can be worked on without lag. However, I am wondering what is recommended/what will happen if I share this file with another? Since the linked files are on my computer, it likely won't translate to her computer when she's working on them... so what is recommended? Even if I share the files with her that are linked, they'll then be in 2 sources and I'm afraid that will disrupt or confuse the file? The only other thing I can think of is embedding them all but splitting the file up into smaller pieces... but this may cause issues when it comes time to piece it together for print? Is there anything else I need to keep in mind when co-working and sending files back and forth? I plan to send files via google drive but is there a better / recommended way? Thank you for any advice, support or recommendations. R
  8. Feature request for Affinity Photo: Embed changed linked files until an update by user Situation: If you load a project file, then all missed linked files will be displayed pixelized. This is extremly contra productive. Better: To avoid missed linked files please embed the visible result into the Affinity project file. If there are files missing, you can still inform the user, but please don't destroy the implemented material by pixelizing it. This solution would secure the use of the files by 3rd parties, without having the original assets. You don't need to save the original file or filesize, just the edited result is all an user need. Seeing the result, even if you don't have the linked material is better, than destroying the project by showing pixelized results. This is the way how it works in Adobe Photoshop and a much better solution, than currently in Affinity Photo. Do you know, what I mean?
  9. I have an Affinity-file that's using another Affinity-file as a linked image inside an image placeholder. The document is set to 'prefer linked' so I told Affinity to don't embed images, but only link. When I update that linked Affinity file itself though, the parent Affinity file using the linked file, doesn't update. Not even when I reload the file. Not even when I reload the software. There is a message telling me there's a change in a linked image, but when I click on the button to show the resource manager, there's nothing in it to update. I can't find any way to update this linked image inside the parent document without reloading the image again in the placeholder. So it doesn't have the behaviour of a linked image, but acts like an embedded image. But I might miss something here? [edit] in the video below both tabs are different documents/'processes'. So the 'linked-file'-tab is not opened by the 'parent-file', but is a different document that happens to be open in the same interface. So there's no connection between the tabs. no-update-of-linked-file.mp4
  10. Hello, I have a question regarding the afpub file size. I tried to include a afdesign document into the afpub (set as linked in the File Manager), but after saving the afpub file is still huge. Is the linked file always saved with the document? Is there any way how to exclude linked files from saving and shrink the afpub file size? Thanks Petr
  11. I get an error when I export a document to pdf (for print) with linked Designer files. Mac OS Sierra 10.12.6.
  12. Hi all! I’ll cut to the chase. I make customisable kid’s books - currently with Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. Right now, the child’s character is an Illustrator file placed at multiple points throughout an InDesign document (the book) and I go through and change layer visibility (annoyingly I have to do this manually on each page) depending on the visual options selected. Finding and replacing text is easy. I’ve been trialling Designer and the Publisher beta and am really impressed, but I have a question for those more in the know: Is there a quick way to choose which layers in an imported linked file into Publisher are on / off? So far I’ve been clicking to edit the linked file from within Publisher but if, for example, I wanted to switch on a particular hair style and colour layer, I’d have to do this for each artboard, defeating the object of saving time. Throughout the book, the character might change clothes so I’ve used artboards to different but was hoping common layers like skin, hair, eyes etc. could be shared and quickly switched on / off for everything quickly. It looks like artboards in Designer are like a traditional group and a Designer file with multiple artboards doesn’t share layers. Is there any way to change this or another way of doing things / thinking about this? My initial thinking / solution: Tweak my Designer file so it has an artboard for all common features needed on each page and other artboards for other layers that only need to be visible on certain pages? This way, I could place a Designer file a few times in the same location in Publisher and have different layers on / off overlaid on each other. Seems a bit of a clunky workaround though. Publisher question (sorry, wrong forum but related to this): when you import multiple instances of a Designer file and want to be able to play with its layer visibilities throughout, can you set some layer overrides in some instances of an imported file and not others? Thanks so much in advance (and sorry for the long post! Just really like Affinity and want to change over!).
  13. I tried linking a Designer file, but Publisher will always embed it. This is unintended behaviour IMO. Is that something that will be addressed in future updates? A dedicated pallette/list of all linked and embedded files is also needed to keep track in larger projects
