  1. Summary: This feature would allow you to use a group to clip a layer, so the resulting transparency of a group of layers would affect the transparency of the layer being clipped. Usage: First off, I have hundreds of psd files from photoshop that use this feature, so I can't use any of these paintings inside Affinity because that feature is not supported (This feature is kind of a show stopper for me, since I can't port all of my older files over to Affinity) And second, it's so useful for a non destructive workflow, many times you want to say paint a bunch of different characters on separate layers, and then apply a soft layer of fog to all the characters. So you group all of your character layers, create a new layer that has your fog color set to a low opacity, and then clip this fog layer to your group. In the current affinity workflow, you'd have to flatten all of those characters to a single layer, which means making edits to your characters later on become a lot harder. Thanks! - Neil
  2. Is that a thing available in Affinity Photo? It really troubles me to add an effects over and over to objects that I can't group (because layers are placed in between) but belong to one part though. I dare say After Effects has these options and they called it 'family' or somewhat. Glad if you could help me out here.
  3. I'm still a beginner, learning AD on Udemy. I contacted the tutor, who has decades of experience. It seemed natural I was doing something very wrong. But according to him it's a bug, and he directed me to this forum. I will paste the same message below. "I had a template made to use for sharing my work on pinterest. This template was also created with AD and has two layers. When I create a custom document with the correct dimensions, my next step is to "Place" the template on the custom document. But this makes the separate layers inaccessible for editing. It's treated as one solid layer, even though the file format is AD's own. (In case it matters, I keep a copy of the template on the desktop for regular use, without changing the file format. This is what I use in the described scenario.) Only if I "Open" the template am I able to edit the layers as needed. But in that case, instead of opening in my custom document, a new tab opens automatically, with the template in it, and the document's dimensions are wrong. " I would really appreciate some guidance. It's entirely possible that I missed something in my course. I'm mostly skimming through it because none of my projects involve drawing. I use bought graphics, which makes the course in question overkill. I'm mostly using it to gain familiarity with the software. It's really difficult to find information for using AD on the type of projects I do. Thanks in advance.
  4. I've been experiencing three issues related to the layers panel and layer selection ever since I updated to Big Sur. Firstly, when I have multiple layers selected and go to hide them all (by either clicking the checkmark or menu option), the last/bottom layer in layers panel will appear to be deselected even though it actually isn't and can still be manipulated along with the other layers that still appear selected. The second one is harder to describe and I haven't figured out what causes it yet (I think it might happen when quickly selecting between different layers in the layers panel, but don't quote me on that), but on multiple occasions I've had the current layer I'm working on appear to deselect itself (but like with the bug mentioned above, isn't and can still be manipulated). That layer, or any other layer, then can't be (re)selected, often thinking I want to change the layer name when I'm just trying to select it. It's like I'm soft locked out of the layers panel entirely. It isn't until I click an empty part on the canvas, to essentially to deselect everything and have nothing selected, am I able to work in the layers panel again. Lastly, when moving layers around in the panel, often times the layer I have selected won't move to its new location in the panel but the layer above or below it that isn't selected will be moved instead. It feels to me that I experience this more when I'm scrolling quickly through the layers while dragging a layer to its new spot in the panel and when I try to move a free layer into an group that's already been formed. Hopefully that all makes sense.
  5. Hi, I'm trying to use the DataMerge functionallity with an embedded document. The main limitation I found is that the datamerge tool can't access the layer information of the embedded document, so the fields are not being populated. Is it posible to display the layers of an embedded document in order for the DataMerge tool to populate the fields? (the layers might be read only so the embedded functionallity is effective). See below a simple screenshot of what I'm trying to achieve. I want to use the DataMerge tool to layout the cards in a specific way while I have a single card design in a different document. Thanks, Alberto
  6. On numerous occasions I've had prints show the border lines of my layers. Now, I just printed a file and it's shows a dark box around the text. None of the layers had an outline in the file. This has happened with Designer and Photo. When I rasterize everything and make it one image, it solves the problem. I shouldn't have to do that. Windows Printer - Epson WF-7720 and Sawgrass SG500
  7. I have not been able to find any information in help files or video tutorials of how to make a composite image from separate RGB layers. I've done this in PS but can't seem to find a way to do this with affinity. I've imported my RGB Astronomy images into a layered RGB image and filled each layer with color in the channels section. I just cannot figure out to whit's end how to combine them into a composite so I can finish processing the images. Flatten or merge don't seem to work. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
  8. I would like to be able to configure layer visibility for each slice independently. This would help iterating export of many slightly different designs.
  9. Hello All, I have a very large image with lots of large layers, (over 100), they were all rendered in my CGI application to a standard scale, as 32 bit PNG, regardless of the size actually occupied by the subject. I'm now combining them into one image, and lining them up. In many cases the layers are 90% or more 100% transparent. But to select with a click and drag, I have to go around all the blank bits I cannot see, which is messy and prone to errors. Can anyone please tell me of a quick way to crop down to the part in a layer that actually has useful non-blank pixels in it? I suspect that this would also release a LOT of memory, and make working with this image more pleasant in general! Thank You, Nick
  10. This is a problem I've experienced occasionally over various versions of AP. It's random, but today it happened three times. Not sure what's causing it, and I can't seem to pinpoint — let alone solve — the issue. My workflow is to use TIFF files saved from my RAW developer of choice, DxO Photolab 4. I open those TIFFs in AP, add a number of layers, then re-save it as a TIFF by pressing "Cmd-S"; on the first save, it presents me with the option of "save with Affinity Layers", which I always choose. After that initial save, as I'm working I save periodically by pressing Cmd-S. Here's the problem: on occasion, AP will save that file and collapse the layers into the background pixel layer. When this happens, the file size shrinks from, say, 250mb (or more) down to 80mb (or less). The problem is that it doesn't necessarily include all the layers, leaving me with a file that often doesn't reflect some of the time-consuming edits I've done. I've been trying to diagnose the problem by deliberately triggering the behavior, but as yet haven't been able to. I'm not opening the TIFF in any other application other than AP, at least until I'm finished with it. The collapse always happens when I've used AP exclusively to open and save the file. Running 10.14.6 on an iMac; AP version is 1.8.4, but this has been happening over all versions in the last year. (I'd rather not save as a native AP file, because my DAM solution (digikam), along with some other apps, doesn't recognize Affinity files. It would also require a convoluted save process and increase the amount of space to keep both the TIFF and the AP file. This is an internal AP problem, not one of an interface with any other app.)
  11. I’m using the Magic Keyboard with my iPad Pro, lots of issues but I’ve worked around them. However, one issue makes the app almost unusable. When renaming a layer using the Magic Keyboard, some characters aren’t working on input. I can capitalize the character and it’ll work, but that’s not ideal. See the video. So far I’ve found that the issue only happens in Designer when renaming a layer. iPad Pro 12.9” 2018 iOS 14 Designer 1.8.6 IMG_0070.MP4
  12. Hello, Fellow UI designer here, just wanted to suggest a few tweaks to the layers panel, 1. Add an even smaller thumbnail setting and maybe even a no thumbnail setting (Not for me but I think some people might like it). The UI is already scaled quite bigger than I'd like and wastes a lot of space from the actual view window. 2. Add the ability to copy paste things from the layers panel, for example: If I hold down CTRL and drag a layer it should let me make a copy of it. It's different than duplicate because it allows me to put the copy anywhere I want directly. 3. Lock icon in the layer itself, it's annoying having to click the layer and then going up and click the lock icon, I already use the shortcut to lock thing but still, annoying. Maybe make the icon appear alongside the checkmark icon as you hover the cursor on top of the layer? I hope you address this in the upcoming updates! Thanks.
  13. I opened a PDF into Affinity Designer and saw something I didn't recognize or understand its purpose. There is a thin blue line between 2 layers. I can't select it, right click on it or any other number of alternate keyboard modifier key clicks. I also can't see any difference that it might be making to the document. It's not like everything above it is locked or invisible or indicating a clipping layer. It also seems to be attached to the layer above it as it moves when I drag layers around. Please can someone educate as to what it's for. Hopefully it's some awesome hidden feature I know nothing about, and not just a glitch from the PDF.
  14. Is there currently a way to select a bunch of layers/objects and collect them all into a new layer with all of those selected layers/objects nested inside or underneath the new layer? I very often find that I want to organize projects as they get unwieldily and if I could select a bunch of layers, right click or hit a button/menu that could move all of those selections into a new folder for easy naming that would be so handy. Does this ability exist now and I haven't found it? Cheers.
  15. Hello! A friend asked me to add a Bigfoot and Santa hat to her photo. It was a fun project. What I found was that by the time I got the three layers in place trying to fine tune each layer just right the program stalled out on me. I would click on the Bigfoot layer to adjust it (like adding snow flakes) and it would stop and would not let me continue. It would be in thinking mode for a very long time. I finally just saved it as it was. I brought it back as an unedited photo and added my last few edits. It made it a very low data file of course, but because it was just for small prints on cards I was willing to let it go. Why couldn't I add the details I needed? Is it my computer, iMac 10.15.5? Thank you! Janelle
  16. I have a substantial issue I am hoping to resolve. I do a lot of architectural retouching, and I often copy-paste small elements all over an image, often from one side to another. I always have to distort/perspective/warp these objects to make them match up. Every time I move or distort an object on a layer, the layer increases in size by the amount of change. So if I copy/paste a region of pixels, then move it across the image to the other side, Affinity thinks the now transparent pixels somehow still have content, and increases the layer size accordingly. If I Command-Click the layer, the selection edges include the now empty pixels. Also if I try to use a distort filter, the handles encompass the entire expanded layer. This makes it nearly impossible to do accurate distortion. I have tried and tried to isolate just the actual pixel content, up to and including selecting the non-transparent pixels and creating a new document. Affinity refuses to accept that the transparent pixels are empty, and includes them in the entire operation. So if I move a 100x100 pixel selection across the image by 4000 pixels, I now have a 4000 pixel layer, that Affinity refuses to trim or crop. Even after I carefully select everything in the mask layer except the white, hit delete, and Command-click the layer again, it still shows the selection bounds including every other location where I moved the content.
  17. I’ve spent two hours trying to find this function on the iPad version of a Affinity Photo. Where the heck is it?
  18. I have an image as a background layer and I have drawn a rectangle over the top as a semi transparent overlay. How do I merge the layers so I can then crop the combined image. Group, save flattened, all still mean I have to crop the overlay and the background individually. Oh and, I cannot find "new layer from background" or am I misremembering. Any advice welcome.
  19. I created about 100 icons - many have several vector layers including objects with outlines and fill. I want to be able to create multiple color combinations. For example, let's say I have 200 layers with combinations of blue and grey. I want to change the blue to red, or the grey to black. Is there a way to change the color of all layers in one shot? I flattened the layers and used the replace color with selection. That seemed to work, but since the layers were converted, when I changed the color the edges were not smooth. Any thoughts?
  20. Since my files have lots of layers, I was wondering if there is a way to find out how many layers does my file consist of with out counting layers one by one ? Appreciate your assistance very much in this regards.
  21. Hi all, I am collaborating with a friend, but he only has access to Inkscape. All the layers in the affinity export are groups, but don't show up in the Inkscape layers panel, which really is a bummer. Anyone have any experience in exporting Affinity designs to be readable in Inkscape in a usable manner?
  22. I have a document, canvas size is 1920 x 1080 with a number of layers, each containing a photograph larger than the canvas size. The photographs are all in varying dimensions. How does one export each layer to a separate file where each file is the photograph in its original size? All options tried to date, using the Export Persona, will export to a file size matching the pixel size of the original photo, but the viewable part is masked to the canvas size (1920 x 1080). Only work around I've found is to select a layer, copy it, use File --> New From Clipboard and then export that document to a new file. A bit tiresome and awkward for a multi-layer document. FWIW, I can't get a macro set to record the above steps.
  23. <RESOLVED! - look at next post> I will start from usual - love Photo Designer. Love it and use it on daily basis. It is one of a things that make my work in it so much less fluent: this is when I click on group - exactly what I expect, group is lighten up on layer mennu, just as it should. but I need something deeper. So I clicked more (on screen, because I see my object and I want to move it to another group, or see where it is hiding. Aaaaand... nothing, no idea. Sometimes it gives pale blue hue to parent group, but not always. Even if - it is bit too delicate to see. Should it or should it not open hierarchy and expose an object will be debatable (I wish it was, but think some people can disagree, but stronger feedback will be welcomed. Thanks!
  24. As I found in this thread, very useful feature of both designer and photo is off by design. And when it's off it works partially, just enough to work as broken. I understand there is group of people who wants this off (I imagine huge imported technical documentation or something like this) But as a user more focused on UI /UX /illustration with quite managable hierarchies I propose to turn on this by default. Just a thought.
  25. Adding a mask to a layer/group will multiply the end result's opacity by itself, since the mask inherits the opacity; so a 50% opacity layer/group will look like 25% opacity if a mask is added. In the attached file, the right layer and group are given a mask, and as such they look half as opaque as on the left (because 50% * 50% = 25%). (And the more masks you add, the less opaque it will end up being (so long as the opacity is not 100%), because each of them will inherit the opacity) Alpha Bug.afdesign
