  1. Hey everyone, quick question: When editing layer effects in Publisher (before anyone asks, I normally do this in Photo, but I double-clicked and thought it would be easier to change the logo quickly in Publisher), is it supposed to show up like this? It says »Highlight: Screen«, but when I click on it to change/check the blend mode, it suddenly says »Light Colour« (because I set it to Light Colour). The same goes for »Shadow: Colour Burn«, it changes to »Multiply«, which is the blend mode that's actually configured. I would have thought it would show the currently set blend mode in this view. 🤔 Publisher_Layer_Effects_Display_Wrong_Blending_Mode.mp4 A bit confusing to look at without wanting to go in and check everything twice, I think. 🤷‍♂️ Have a great weekend Dennis
  2. EDIT: Latest version of AD2 on iPad. iPad running most current iPadOS. EDIT: Forgot to mention that changing the Blur Radius on any one of the single-layer Symbols updates all instances. This behaviour surprised me. I use Symbols a LOT, so I expect edits applied to a layer inside a Symbol to affect all instances, whereas edits applied at the Symbol level affect just that instance. After all, that’s how we get to have multiple instances of a Symbol in different positions, sizes and/or orientations. The Issue I made a Symbol with multiple layers and applied a Gaussian Blur to the upper 3 layers in the Symbol. Radius for the blur is specific to the layer. Great. Then I made a Symbol with just one layer, and multiple instances of the Symbol. When I applied a Gaussian Blur to just one instance, at the Symbol level, all the instances of that Symbol got the same Gaussian Blur. Removing the blur from one instance removed it from all of them. The instances of the Symbol present as Symbols throughout. Not what I expected; can this be right? So I’m calling it a bug, rightly or wrongly. The cargo I’ve attached an AD2 document with it’s very short history, and a video screen capture. Possibly related thread @Lee D I found this, and although it’s not exactly the same, I think it might be related. Regards RPReplay_Final1692712691.mp4 Effects and Symbols.afdesign
  3. Layer effects: You can create borders with inner and outer shadow effects, but it would be nice to have a dedicated Layer effect for borders Suggestion: Add outer border effect to add one or more borders, with width, color, shadow, corner radius (with 90degree sharp) .... adjustments for each border
  4. Would be awesome to get these results in AD/AP layer effects. Looks like PS gloss contour is missing to help this happen, also a Satin effect would be a great addition. Texture is a good one too.
  5. For a few days now I've been playing around with layer effects and some procedural filters – it's super fun and I love the results it can generate! This is the result this morning, based on my own logo and 100% pure Affinity Photo magic, and (except for the very last couple of steps) nondestructive. Maybe I'll release a macro for this sometime, if I can manage to squeeze it into a clean sequence. It'll work with almost any kind of base – images, texts, vector layers. This is what the base result will look like after the macro is applied, everything else is layer effects (and a background texture):
  6. Fans Need To Respect K-Pop Idols Privacy.ytn.afphotoHere is the source file. Hello, I'm Michelle. I'm having issues with Affinity Photo. So I'm having issues with Layer Effects. When I click; on Layer Effects(FX) panel and click on one of the effects, for example, 'Outline' and change the settings like 'Radius.' Blocks would show up around a cutout image of me. The same goes for the other Layer Effects as well. I have attached a screenshot; so you know what I mean.
  7. Does designer V1 have the ability to copy and paste layer effects from one object to another without having to manually open the effect box for each new object?
  8. Dear Community I'm getting wrong results withe the same .APHOTO file using the Mac version (1.10.5 and all before) of Affinity Photo. When I use Blend Mode: "Darker Color" in Layer Effects it only works correct with the PC version. Settings (for the red square): Result on the PC (desired): Result on the Mac (buggy?): I also attached the source file. Can anyone reproduce the error or is it only on my machine (MacBook Pro running MacOs 12.3.1)? afphoto-shadow-darker-color-test_01.afphoto Additional fact: When I switch to Affinity Designer (1.105) the result is correct. I would really appreciate equal results for equal settings on both systems. Greetings, Henry
  9. Hi Affinity community, In my publisher file, I have multiple placed items from a source Affinity Designer file. I use the layer effect to colour them white. After every time I update the source file (e.g. for adding a new icon), the layer effect is gone. That’s pretty annoying, as we’re talking about 50+ occurences in the file. I tried to avoid the problem by grouping each icon in its own group (to apply the effect on the group), but that doesn’t work either, because of the group disappearing (probably another bug) the moment it is created. That has probably sth to do with the icon sitting in a box with applied restraints, but is most likely another topic in its own. Any help would be very much appreciated.
  10. I have been trying to create a style in publisher using add from selection which will be font and character style independent. However, I cannot for the life of me work out how to just make is copy the style without changing the font to match. I would like three artistic text forms to have the same colouring in layer effects applied but leave the font information alone, That way it can be applied to artistic text with other font styles. Is there any way to apply styles with such adaptive abilities? Much like the default object styles which come with publisher?
  11. Hi, I'm used to the Photopea program that when I turn on a shadow on an object (via Layer effects) with parameters so that this shadow looks like the outline of an object of a certain thickness, in the mentioned Photopea the shadow had beautiful smooth edges. If I do this in AP, the edges are jagged, see screenshots. Yes, I can use the outline of an object whose edges are smooth, but I would like to move this outline, just like when I set the offset and angle in the shadow. Is there an easy way around this or should I ask the Affinity team to fix the jagged shadows?
  12. After playing with the TARDIS acronym, I developed a magic square style layout with the word TARDIS written bidirectionally on the outside of the square. Then using Affinity Publisher I created a table with eh letters written into each cell. I chose an illustrated caps font and saved the finished product as an SVG. This I later imported into Publisher and using an upscaled image of a wormhole from Pixabay as a background, I placed the word square with a white square behind it onto the page. I added a shadow to the white square and ran the auto levels on the background in studio link Photo persona. This was done on an A0 size document. Rotating the square slightly in an anticlockwise fashion seemed to give it a subtle artistic flair. Then using the rescale option in Publisher I created subsequently smaller versions A1, A2 and A3. The resultant landscape poster is shown in JPG form. This is A3 size. This reduced viewed version created in Photo. I would definitely have this on my wall. I have ordered the A2 poster version from Vistaprint. Looking forward to seeing the final product. This has a new logo to avoid breaching any BBC logo creation rules.
  13. I purchased Affinity Photo months ago. Ever since then, I have been having a few issues with the software. The issues I'm having with the software are the layers are blurred or something like that for a few seconds when I use Effects. When I used the text or a specific type font or do anything with the text, like change the size of the text, duplicate the text, and move the text, the transparent canvas would show up (some of the transparent canvas would show up). Also, when I open up a file, the layers, adjustments, layer effects, and live filters become blurred for a few seconds, then go back to normal. Now, I'm going to tell Affinity support about the issues I'm having, but I just want to post it in this forum to see if anyone else is having the same issues, as I am. Also, if someone could help me solve these issues.
  14. Here is a parody song I knocked up based on Moonlight Shadow by Mike Oldfield. Anyone who remembers the early days of British microcomputing will probably understand the reference. Image created in Affinity Photo using G'Mic filters. Layed out quickly in Affinity Publisher.
  15. Loved the recent updates serif have been pushing for Affinity Designer, but I do have a very minor proposal for scaling with regards to layer effects. Currently how they work is that the scaling will only apply to a specified layer, opening the panel with another layer selected will reset the toggle making the scaling independent between layers. This actually worked very well, no issues, but one drawback I find is that when working with an artwork with multiple layers and multiple effects there is a need to constantly check the toggle for each layer in order to make sure that the visuals stay the same in the event you find the need to resize. The initial thought I have is maybe a global toggle that will apply to all layers would be a really awesome timesaver. But come to think of it, maybe it would be an even easier implementation if the panel saves the state of the toggle for every new layer after that? That way it's still independent for each layer, at the same time, if I am starting on an artwork and need to scale effects I could just toggle the option on the first layer and wont need to toggle each time a layer is created.
  16. I'm using designer for Vector graphics (Illustrations / animations) online. So I was surprised to see some features generate base64 images inside the SVG fileformat while a lot of times it shouldn't be nececary; Why does the 'Outline' Layer effect use rasterisation on vector objects? I would expect this to generate another vector-shape while exporting to SVG that is slightly larger than the object Why does 'Color Overlay' layer effect use rasterisation on vector objects? I would expect this to change the color of a shape fill, or intelligently generate an overlay vector-shape while exporting to SVG. I'd say that could work? Why do the color-changing Adjustment layers rasterize while exporting to SVG? I would expect the fills and stroke colors to be changed according to the adjustment color results while exporting to SVG. For example: changing the levels in an Adjustment layer on top of a white rectangle should only change the color of that rectangle while exporting to SVG, but now it generates a base64 rasterimage within the SVG. Perhaps even blend modes could be calculated during export to SVG (by some intelligent way of slicing vectorobjects and stuff), although a lot more work for the developer Although I personally don't really need thisone, this would definitely be a huge step forward in creating artful graphics and a step ahead of Adobe ! I'm working with a lot of SVG files on a daily basis for illustrations and animations online. So I'm always looking for ways to keep images as sharp and small in filesize as possible and optimize. It would be great if, where possible, effects could generate vector-outputs if possible. So affect vector-colors (intelligently calculating where needed) instead of generating base64 images inside the SVG. Thanks!!! And keep up the great work. This program is briljant!
  17. It would be great if Serif would come back to the FX panel and upgrade it. I think it's okay but it could be so much better. It's been 7 years now with the same fx and no update. I would like to request that if you could look at making the outer shadow effect not just apply to the original shape its being applied to, but also increase its radius when an outer bevel is applied.
  18. Hi all, I create a rectangle of 100 x 100 mm in Publisher. I fill the rectangle with a solid colour and give it a layer effect, e.g. a Gaussian Blur of exactly 50 px. I create a second rectangle of 50 x 50 mm and fill it as well. Now I copy the first, larger rectangle, click on the second, smaller rectangle and execute the command "Paste FX". The Gaussian Blur is transferred to the smaller rectangle, but its radius is only 22.8 px. Now I can enlarge the smaller rectangle, but the radius remains at 22.9 px. This makes absolutely no sense to me. Either effects are scaled or not, but what is it? I want an effect to just transfer as I created it, without scaling. Is that possible? Regards, Felix
  19. Using Designer 1.9 on a Mac and a PC I would like to be able to tab through the numeric values in the Layer Effect window. For example: Adding a Shadow to an asset. 70% opacity <tab> The expectation is that the courser would go to the next field, in this case "radius" However, the tab simply functions as an enter for the Opacity setting and I have to physically click in the next field to change the numeric values. Additionally, a feature I would like to see, is the ability to copy a Layer Effect and paste it to another object in my illustration. Currently, right clicking on a layer and selecting copy simply copies the layer itself. (if the feature to copy a Layer Effect exists, I have not found it.)
  20. Hi, In Photoshop I used to be able to apply FX to a layer i.e a drop shadow then if I wanted to I could right click on the layer with the FX applied and select "Create Layer". This would create / convert the non destructive FX on that layer to pixels using clipping masks and layers. I found this feature really useful as I could remove parts of the drop shadow layer using masks giving me complete control of the FX. Can i request this feature to be added or do you have plans to add feature to Affinity Photo already? See screen shots attached as to where this feature is in Photoshop. Thanks, Oliver
  21. Following a recent upgrade to Mac OS Big Sur 11.0.1 on the mac and upgrade to 1.8.6 of Publisher. When attempting to use an outline on an image using layer effects, the gradient colour stops cannot be selected properly. Unable to switch from one end to the other end of the gradient colour circles. Shutting down publisher then restarting sometimes works but only once or twice. In the image attached the left colour circle is active. unable to click on or select any of the other 2 circles. I have since been able to continue by opening the document on another mac using version 1.8 and Catalina. I was able to select the gradient stops and change the colours. I installed V1.8.6 on the Catalina machine and that worked as well. I have retried the document on the original Mac and the problem no longer manifests itself. This could be a work around. The document was originally created from a template on Publisher V 1.8.6 MacOS Big Sur.
  22. Hi , as of today the layer affects panel has stopped Working on mac, won't let me choose effects on the panel, a restart gets it too work for one time choice, then back to not working again, this is happening in publisher too, so weird.
  23. Affinity Publisher newbie here. After working in Publisher with an image that had changed from "image" to "pixel", I found I was no longer able to draw a thin rule around it in the way it can be done with a text frame or image frame. There's always the Outline layer effect, but it does the job only partway. With Outline there don't seem to be controls for how the corners are drawn—they are always rounded. But is there a way to alter the corners using some other controls in the program?
  24. It would be great if there are options for copying, pasting, disabling and removing layer effects by right clicking on a layer. I know layer effects can removed by clicking on the fx icon and unchecking the boxes. What do you think friends?
  25. With Affinity Designer, I'm making a visual health cue of a bipedal figure, separating the torso, arms, and legs so that each section can independently show a health status with a color. This means several copies of each section's image layer with a different color (green means 100%, red is 25%, etc). I've isolated each section with a layer mask so I have to decide between adding a Layer Effect>Color Overlay, or Adjustment Layer>Recolor (or HSL) to each group of layers, or to each individual layer. Also wondering if it's more efficient to add the layer effect or adjustment layer to the group layer or to each layer individually. I just want the program and my computer to run as smoothly as possible, been noticing the fans getting a little louder after adding a Color Overlay Layer Effect to each group. Just want to know if that's the best option or if there's a better one that's less taxing to my pc. I'm on Windows 10, with an Asus ROG laptop which has an Nvidia GTX1070 with 6 or 8 GB dedicated graphics. I've attached a pic of how I've organized the groups. I opened the 100% group so you can see what's inside each group, and all the other percent groups are organized the same.
