  1. Is there a setting I need to make when saving a PSD with Layer Masks? I have some really simple PSDs, just a few pixel layers, each one with blank layer masks. I've opened up complex mockup PSDs with Smart Objects and the like on AP for ipad and they've opened fine and from a few search results I seen sites saying AP supports layer masks so I'm assuming it's a setting I need to check? Not working on MacOs desktop or ipad 2.0.4
  2. The bounding boxes for masks (the area allowed to paint inside) doesn't always increase / decrease automatically. Masking an image outside of an artboard bugs it out somehow. Here's a file showcasing the issue. I don't know how to replicate it entirely, but the whole right side won't mask at all in this example: Mask Issues.afphoto Also, masks don't affect outside of the artboard and I think it's a strange behavior. Especially for cutting out objects. It's a lot of extra work for no reason. We shouldn't need to Rasterize > Trim and lose the photos quality as a workaround.
  3. Would be great, after you Alt+click on the mask to see it, to be able to Alt+click again on it to come out (instead of clicking on another layer or pressing Esc)
  4. I want to create a mask that clips one unique layer but is not linked to it. In PS I would click the chainlink between layer and mask so as to achieve this. I can find no equivalent in AP. I have found a workaround but I can't help feeling I may be missing something. The top image below shows my problem. I wish to be able to mask the green triangle but be able to move the triangle around while the mask stays in place without moving. Moving the mask above the triangle, as in the middle image, achieves this but also clips the blue square below which I do not want clipped. The solution I have found is to make a group of the triangle layer and place the mask inside it but unattached to the triangle layer. See bottom image. This works fine. It just seems clumsy and convoluted. So am I missing something here. Is there a better way?
  5. I'm having some issues with layer masking on the Photo Persona of Affinity Publisher 1.9.2.1035. I've an image clipped to a text layer and added a layer mask. Painting on the layer mask with a black brush works perfectly fine, but if I switch to white it won't work! I opened the AFPUB on AP and it works perfectly fine. I've attached the AFPUB and a screen-recording of the issue. I'm on Win 10 Home. afpub masking issue.mp4 test.afpub
  6. I am so stumped. This would be so easy in Photoshop but after a day of trial and error and googling, I remain perplexed. I am making a logo that should over lap in a chain-link sort of way. I tried going to pixel persona and making but the selection tool is incredibly ragged and imprecise. I could get it to work in a rigged sort of way if I didn't need the white stroke, but i do. Here's an example of what I'm trying to do... So much to learn. Any help/tips would be greatly appreciated.
  7. If I add a mask to a pixel layer and modify the layer with the Warp Tool, only the pixels are affected, the mask doesn't change. I don't understand the logic here, the tool should work on the mask as well. Like in that "other program".
  8. Hello, With Affinity Photo is there anyway to Dodge and Burn on a layer mask? I've tried the dodging and burning tool but it has no effect. Also, can the density of a layer mask be adjusted? With a layer mask selected the opacity slider adjusts the opacity of the whole image, not the selection on the mask. Thanks
  9. hi If any solution for my problem... cutout an image in AP but find that the layer mask appears differently in PS. The mask looks correct in PS Channel but no idea why some background still intact.
  10. Hi, I'm new to Affinity Photo. I have now tested different things and when my testing period is over I will probably leave my "old" editing program :-) but ... I have two questions right now: 1: I couldn't work with layer masks in the latest version, but when I downloaded an earlier version then it worked perfectly. Why? (I have macOS Mojave 10.14.6) 2: I open a photo that has 300ppi, I make some adjustments and when I save / export it, regardless of file extension, it's only at 72ppi. How do I keep the resolution 300ppi? I hope to hear from you soon :-)
  11. Hello, I recently purchased Serif Affinity Photo. I noticed that the layer mask is not working properly. Whenever I try to paint with black, no effect is seen. When I invert the mask and try to paint with white, nothing happens. I have NOT ticked " protect alpha" in the context bar, and there seems to be some effect only when mask is revealed by pressing 'alt' and blending mode is changed to 'soft light'. Obviously the image is not seen and mask cannot be accurate. Please help. I am using widows 10 home eddition and latest version of Affinity Photo, 1.7
  12. In attached file, there is a pixel layer at the bottom. Above that sits a group with one layer, a pixel layer containing a gradient. This runs from a solid bluish color to a transparant (also bluish) color. So far no problem. If I now add a new blank mask layer to the group, the colors suddenly and - to me - unexpectedly change. If I do the same in 1.6, this behaviour does not happen. As long as the mask is blank, i.e., all white, it is not noticeable. I suspect it may have to do with one of the sides of the gradient being transparant. Attached: 1 - the file as created in 1.6 2 - the same file after import in 1.7 beta. iMac running macOS Mojave 10.14.4 Affinity Photo 1.7 beta 1.7.0.122 mask-16.afphoto mask-17beta.afphoto
  13. I have a file I made in Affinity Photo on my Mac and it has a layers mask where I drop an image under some text and the image is masked into the text. When I use the same file on the iPad the mask does not work. I drop the image under the text layer and nothing happens. Are layer masks supported on the iPad? What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
  14. I have two curve layer adjustments for my dodge and burning retouch work on AP for my iPad Pro. I’d like to select a section of the mask and add a Gaussian blur. Is this possible? If so, how do I do this? I new to AP but a Photoshop veteran looking for an iPad alternative. Thank you so much in advance.
  15. Hi All, New to Affinity, but does anyone know if you can use apply image on a layer mask? The link I attached here leads to a video describing what exactly I mean. Thank you! Ronny https://youtu.be/lwA34y8ZUbw
  16. Hi. When I select a layer and click on the layer mask icon, it creates a layer mask above and separately from that first layer. I have to manually drag it underneath the layer I meant to mask. Why is not automatically apply it to the layer I've selected? It should work exactly that way, like in photoshop or in any online Affinity tutorial, but not for me.
  17. I have a few questions relating to Macros on both Mac & iOS devices. My first question is also a testimonial to what really won me over to Affinity Photo this week. I was editing a photo taking in a living room on my iPad in Affinity Photo and was trying the macros out and ended up with a photo that now looks like it was taken in a studio. I recreated what I did on the iPad on my mac and turned it into a macro but there's one major issue I have. My macro creates a layer mask of for the people in the photo and this overall macro is one I'd like to reuse however I can't for the life of me figure out how to have it ask to make a selection when ran and would that also work on the iPad? In case that's not clear I'd like to run a macro on either device and if part of that macro requires a selection to be made have it prompt me to make one. Secondly I accidentally imported the same macro in twice and created a duplicate and did not see an easy way to delete the duplicated live macros. I ended up deleting the app and reinstalling but this seems a bit drastic especially as time goes on and with the additional macros we can import now from desktop version would like to see a way to manage these on the iPad. Lastly will there be a way to create macros from the iPad itself in the future? I'm honestly blown away by the ability to create macros and effortlessly sync them to the iPad and I didn't even realize this was possible until this week. While I've owned both Mac & iOS versions of Affinity Photo this is what really caused me to push aside other apps. This is amazing.
  18. I would like to offer a little context before I proceed with the issue that I faced, and eventually solved after a little bit of fumbling. I have been an SME (Subject Matter Expert) for a "in house" developed custom business program of a reputable worldwide company. Part of my responsibility was to help, train and assist, each time we added, modified, or changed features. I wrote the release notes, and provided support to all users, old and new on how to perform the tasks. I learned that if you do not have the exact same configuration, your procedures or guidelines will invariably fall on the face, because they will work for you, but not for the others. I was at page 116: Manipulating an adjustment layer mask; The book illustrates the HSL panel, the context tool bar for the paint brush tool, and the color panel. The adjacent page is the typical before and after photos. I successfully completed each step until item 8; painting over with the brush tool did not produce any change. After verifying that I had done everything as shown, I tried again, and again. No change. Obviously, I did not fault the workbook. I was the culprit, not following the steps properly. Clear the board, reload the photo, and.... same! small incursion to page 33, to remind me of the subtleties of the color panel, and back to the grind. No progress. I knew this procedure was working for the person who wrote it, but he did not offer a full screen shot nor specified any other requirement before painting on the layer mask. Has someone from Affinity attempted to go through each of the steps of every tasks proposed in the book, as described? made sure they worked? this is key to the success of a "hands-on" manual. Another example, when I select the "selection brush" by default, it is in "subtract" mode. I have to click on "add" to get the selection going. Does Affinity have the "subtract" mode as default? A long story short, the experience and success of the book will be reflected from its accuracy. I will post my full review once I have done all the tasks successfully. Now experts, why did my painting on the layer mask did not produce the expected reveal of the HSL?
  19. Hi, is it possible to add noise (destructively or non-destructively) to a layer mask? (this can be helpful to reduce banding when using smooth gradients inside a layer mask, in an 8 bit document). I did try it by selecting the mask and adding a Noise Live Filter Layer (and also adding Filters-Noise-Add Noise) but it didn't seem to work. Thanks!
  20. In photoshop, you can take a photo image and apply it into a layer mask, then adjust it to create the desired tshirt graphic worn texture look. (see images) Can this be done in Affinity Photo? I have been playing around with the masks and haven't yet figured it out. Thanks for the help.
  21. I am trying to understand how masking works in Affinity Designer, but I just can't wrap my head around it. In the attached image, I have two things: a logo and a grunge image. I want to use the grunge to apply a distress effect on the logo. I know the way to do this has something to do with dragging one of them inside the other (not sure which one though), with a mask layer thrown in there somewhere.... Most things are pretty intuitive in AD, but how masking works just doesn't make sense to me. Can someone help me out, please?
  22. Photoshop has traditionally had the Select > Color Range command. There is also HSL keying inside the Hue/Saturation adjustment toolset, which, annoyingly cannot be used to create selections for use with other commands without clumsy workarounds (that I know much better than I would care to admit). What I am hoping to see is a non-destructive way to do masking based on luminance, HSL tools, as well as possibly more sophisticated keying algorithms that are found in video software (Primatte, Keylight, etc.). Most video-focussed color correction software (DaVinci Resolve, Speedgrade, Lustre, Baselight, FilmMaster, Assimilate Scratch) allows for non-destructive HSL keying already. The most elegant way I can imagine this working inside Photo is that similar to regular layer masks, a new procedural mask layer type for non-destructive HSL/Select Color Range masks with adjustable parameters would be available. Like an adjustment layer, except that the result would be a mask instead of an RGBA image, to be used just like regular layer masks. That way, it would be easy to adjust the selection parameters interactively after the fact, and, if need be, rasterize destructively to a regular raster mask layer. In additions to the keying in Luma, RGB, HSL, YUV and LAB, parameters for blurring the result, expanding/contracting the mask would be useful. The exact same functionality could then double as a vastly improved "Select Color Range" command as well.
  23. Recently I wanted to apply some gaussian blur to a layer mask. I selected the mask layer and hit the fx button at the bottom of the dialogue. Sure enough up pops a little fx on the mask in the layers palette and the layer effects dialogue opens for me. But when I try to apply the blur nothing happens. AP presents the dialogue to me, accepts the settings on the slider .... but does nothing. Strangely it doesn't warn me that am I trying to do something that I shouldn't be doing. So am I missing something here? At present the only way I can find to apply a blur to a layer mask is to do so destructively from the main Filters menu. Obviously Refine Mask would seem to be one option but it automatically analyses the selection and starts to do other stuff as well that I don't really want. So is there a way I can apply a non destructive blur to a layer mask or is there a way I can stop Refine Mask from doing anything else except soft edging?
  24. Using a group as a layer mask doesnt seem to be possible, which kind of sucks. One work around for a good workflow would be if you could choose the way you are painting like in GIMP.
  25. In Affinity Photo, I'd like the same functionality as Photoshop's Layer>Layer Mask>From Transparency. It takes the transparency of an image and converts it to a layer mask. It's SUPER helpful when you need to extract either the transparency, or the underlying image as separate images.
