  1. Hi Affinity, First message in this forum so I want to start by thanking you for this really great piece of software. I was starting to use it in replacement of the adobe suite several weeks ago for illustrative, ui design and print work and I absolutely love it! So, I have a very annoying bug : I can't use the shift modifier for increasing text size by 10 in the dropdown. It's the same for the line height and paragraph setting. But this shortcut works perfectly in the opacity dropdown. Weird ?! Not sure it's relevant but I use a wacom tablet, and everything is up to date : driver, os, my haircut... Thanks in advance and sorry if my english is pretty lame (I'm french)!
  2. I find the UI in Affinity needs work. For instance, when pull up the "Soft Proof" dialogue and can flip through previews of the various settings, but I have to click each one, instead of being able to up and down arrow through them. That's very time-consuming and unnecessary. The same thing applies to the crop tool in Photo, where you can see a preview of the cut, but you cannot fine-tune adjust it's placement with the keyboard. I would like to be able to "nudge" the box where I need to.
  3. Gentlemen: I was a beta and enjoy using Affinity (although after using photoshop the learning curve is a bit of a problem). I was working on a project the other night when all of a sudden the original interface changed. The layers, effects, adjustments were gone. the tools were gone. I was able to get the tools back but everything was "disconnected". My question is how do I go about getting Affinity back to the original interface, and what I may have done to cause it. Thanks Chuck
  4. Now that we have symbols, replicators wouldn't be far off. Attached is how it works in Modo. You take any item (groups are items too), set it as a master object, activate the replicator tool and create live duplicates of that master. Anything that changes with the master changes in the duplicates as you make the changes. The position of the replicas is basically done with null objects/locators that can be automatically positioned with a formula (to form predefined shapes or cling to bezier node points of an item) or can be placed manually. What I'm doing in the video is just moving the centre point of the master object around, this creates an offset-like effect. replicator demo.mov
  5. Kerning and tracking are the most common tasks in typography, yet we have to deal with tiny archaic interfaces in pretty much all apps out there. You already have a rotation tool that's good for getting the values into the ballpark fast and edit details later. Kerning and tracking don't have anything like that. What I'm suggesting is head-up display options added to the regular tools. I made a mockup (attached) of the art text tool to better illustrate that idea. Ideally the regular tools would have a small button (a blue '+' maybe) that lets you add that specific controller to the HUD of the related tool(s). Everybody has different needs and this would speed up workflows without having things present that the user may not need.
  6. I am excited to share with you the official announcement of my new Affinity Designer course on Lynda.com. It been out for a couple of weeks now and just getting around to sharing with those of you who might of missed it. Much of the course was based on the features found in Affinity 1.4, but I think their a good amount of tips and techniques in this short 1hr and 18 minute course. I made this course for the designer/developer who need to get up to speed on UX/UI specific tools and features fast. Anyway, check it out and again thank you all for your continued interest and support! CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE COURSE Course Description Learn how to incorporate Affinity Designer's features into your own design process. Here Ronnie McBride shows how to set up your preferences, use artboards, create custom color themes in the Swatches panel, apply styles and gradients, and create wire-frames, mock-ups, UI assets, and hero graphics—all with Affinity Designer's versatile tool set. Once you find out what you can do with Affinity Designer, you may never go back to expensive design software again. Topics include:Setting up your preferences and interface Creating new documents Using artboards Creating a wire-frame or mock-up Creating UI assets Exporting for prototyping ` Check out my other titles in my signature below.
  7. Hi! I wonder, if there is a possibility to change background colour of the upper toolbar? I've found "Customise Toolbar" options, but I can not see anything about the background colour. And when I change "artboard background grey level" to lighter, which I prefer, then the header section is too visually heavy and focus my attention too much. So I would like to ask you, if there is any possibility to give the lighter colour option of toolbar to the new upgrade of your program? It would be awesome! And yet there is another thing that distracts me, although just a little this time... ;) When I'm in the Node Tool mode, then the round curve points are little too big and I can not see the line clearly (like you can see on this strange animal, that I've attached). Is there any option I can choose to make them smaller in the Node Tool mode? BTW, I've observed Affinity from some time and I really like your program and your friendly approach! And wish you best luck on the market :)
  8. Hey, Congrats on 1.5 - it is sweet! Unless I'm missing something... And this is no biggie - but the export preset for OS X icons gives the folder a ".appiconset" extension, however, the stock provided tool for making icons (iconutil) requires ".iconset". Maybe this is something that I can fix myself, by editing the preset (if it is in some file somewhere)? Thanks
  9. Of all the speed and practical features i enjoy in my workflow- wich AD excels and covers me (thanks a lot!) - the most crucial for me is missing: profiles. (2nd most, right below shortcuts) I want speed. I want to focus on what im working with - and something that enhances the experience a lot is having the interface suited precisely for what im doing. The more tabs i have to find/click, floating windows, move the cursor across my monitor and such the less i concentrate; I easily get into 'the flow' - and AD is top on getting me there, thanks A LOT - but it fades and breaks the more menu fiddling i have to do. AD already is councious of that with the amazing Draw, Pixel and Export personas. Amazing. But how much im missing fine tuning then to specific needs. Typography for instance. How much i wanted to 'click' in typography (how i would call a personal profile) and the interface changing to show all text panels in the layout i liked most for that. Or the symbols and assets panels (loving these features) wich sits better docked alongside the artboard but only when i need then... Wouldn't be any fuss if my process was linear - first this then that - but i constantly switch between 'modes' so to say, ridiculously more so the earlier i am on a design - testing and tuning combinations of elements and alterntives and such. Surely not as critical as bug fixing, or major features (how much i want some kind of 'blob brush') - but considering how Ux is king and on my view what is making AD take on the competition so well (killing at it id say), this is pretty much the only major Ui/ux feature i see missing from the perfect AD i can envision. Just imagining assigning some shortcuts to profiles and swithcing in the blink of a eye would sit really really well alongside the fluid 10000 zoom, infinite history... the feel and practicity of the whole thing.
  10. Hi genius developers, Wonderful software and great tutorials. Thanks ! But… Aperture's interface with Epson Photo R3000 was perfect. For the moment, Affinity's one is a bit disappointing. Do you plan something about it ? Aperture's interface for Epson R3000.tiff
  11. I've had a quick look around and couldn't find something similar... I use 2 x screens with Affinity (Photo or Designer; Macbook Pro + external monitor). If the external monitor is not plugged in (I'm out and about, for example), the previously, carefully position interface menus (normally shoved over onto the external monitor) reposition themselves in a mess on the Macbook screen. Unfortunately, largely sized menus such as Layers (because my external monitor is large) are not resizable when they are repositioned back in the Macbook main screen. The attached screenshot show what happened to the Layer panel. The only way to get it back is to select Reset Studio in the menus. So: 1. Any workaround 2. Any chance Affinity could implement a dual screen save option? (Adobe has it. I want to move away from Adobe!)
  12. Hello guys, Just a humble suggestion for improving the user interface. I noticed that the toolbar has no hover effects on the tool-icons. This makes navigation a little bit less comfortable than on certain competition programs. I also noticed that the behavior of button is quite different from button to button. So what do you think of making a very subtle hover effect on the tools and buttons as you already have on (some of) the buttons in the top bar (beneath the menu)? Though the effect there is a little bit to weak, so I'd enchance it a little more. Some Buttons are great in that case (for example the little icons for layer effects, mask layer etc. in the layer panel but some don't have any (for example the dropdown-icon (opacity,...) or the 'Properties'-button in the stroke panel. I attached a little screenshot as an example for the hover effect. before (without (easy visible) hover effects): after (with (enhanced) hover effects): Cheers, Jay
  13. I kind of like the flick panning in Photoshop. Any plans for this in AD or AP? It's nice and smooth.
  14. This is a bizarre problem which is completely un-troubling to me but is perhaps worth reporting nonetheless. I live in Belgium but have English as my first language. My Apple OS is thus set up for a Belgian AZERTY keyboard and regional formatting but with British English as the primary system language. Affinity Photo is set up in English in it's preferences. All works perfectly - my interface and dialogues etc. all are in English as would be expected ...... except Swatches, Brushes and Styles. These three palettes display in English with English titles and English drop down menus in the top right corner but their contents display in French! So the drop down Swatches list starts with "Gris, Couleurs and Dégradés", the Brushes drop down offers me "Basique, Peinture, Dessin, and Poils DAUB", etc. Same happens with Styles which offer me "Coucher, Arc-en-ciel, Verre and Saumon". For some reason my English palettes contain French goodies ...... To be honest it's absolutely no difficulty as I read French without even thinking about it so the "problem", if it can be called that, is completely transparent to me. In fact it was ages before I even noticed it recently ........... but I report it, for what it's worth, as it does seem to indicate some minor configuration confusion somewhere which others might find more troubling. Although I have posted in Affinity Photo, which is my principal application, the same thing occurs in exactly the same manner in Designer. Odd ................
  15. First of all, let me say that I like so much of what Affinity Photo and Designer have to offer. My struggle with them are along the lines of the interface and some usability issues. I am sure you are working on these but I thought some user feed back in the spirit of wanting to help contribute to improving would be welcome. I am a photographer and a designer, so I am working with multiple images. I have stepped away from Adobe because it's simply overpriced. Paying continually high fees for marginal development is frustrating and "pocket draining". Adobe bridge is maybe not the finest tool in the world for managing multiple images say from a shoot, but at present, Affinity lacks anything close. What little there is for this task in Affinity Photo is marginal. I am hopeful you are working on something to make sorting, categorizing and managing large shoots easier. When I load multiple images where the bar can't reflect all the images loaded as tabs, using the icon to get to the other images should show all the images loaded. Maybe a "sort tabs by file name" would be helpful. The image I am working on should become the first tab in the bar. I have closed the wrong file many times. When I use a filter on one image, the selected filters should stay open and active as I go from image to image. Filters resetting to default values works best for me as I go from photo to photo. Some filters seem to not do anything unless I choose another filter and then go back the the ones I was using. When I export an image to a file, I can't seem to be able to export again to a new file. If I delete the exported file in the finder, exporting again looks like it's exporting, but nothing is happening at all. Should prompt for overwrite or new file name. When developing and cropping an image, I should just be able to hit "Enter" and the crop occurs. I have to select some other tool and then it happens. I would like to be able to resize and export in bulk all open files or files in a selected folder with the same dimensions. If I have some images that are portrait and some landscape, the largest dimension should take priority. I would like to be able to close all open files with the same action. I have to close each file one at a time. I hope you receive these comments as positive feedback as they are intended. I appreciate all the work that goes into this product. Regards, -John

  17. Hey there, I'm starting a post about the interface problems in order to list and create a roadmap like kind of post. I'm gonna also suggest some optimisations of the UI in order sometimes to gain only 1 click, but definitely improve workflow and reduce the amont of stress/anxiety people get when starting using a new app. I apologize for my English and if a Moderator wants to edit my posts, I have no problem with that. I'm going to edit this post regularly and add screenshots of the issues I encounter as well as the suggestions. Issues Case 01: This is my current workspace and this just happened, the dropdown menu should have the higher z-index value in my mind. Case 02: I find it really hard to resize the Tool Panels (Finding the scale cursor at the bottom of the panel). It is not possible to resize the boxes once they are snapped and some Tool Panels have always the same size where they aren't floating like the Swatches Panel which result in the lost of usable space. Case 03: It is currently not possible to create two columns of Tool Panel next to each other, the second one can only be made of floating menus. Suggestions - When the gradient tool is selected, a large part of the Tool area is empty, whereas we have two dropdown menus "Context" & "Type". It would be nice to have icons instead on the free space available like the two blue highlighted icons on the image. It would save many clicks. - When you create a color palette from system/document/application it gives you a tons of colours. And I didn't find a way to remove several colours at once and it will take age to remove them one by one. This is a problem for creating style guide for example. - Is there a keyboard shortcut for the colour picker? I didn't find it in the documentation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Thanks for your time and I hope you find that is relevant feedbacks and useful post. Have a nice day! Eddy
  18. What photo browser is recommended when using Affinity Photo? I have been using Adobe Browser along with Photoshop and the interface is clean and easy between the two Adobe produces. What browser will work best with Affinity Photo? Thanks, Joe
  19. General UI Layout: Vertical Space Usage There's something that drives me _bananas_ about PS Elements; but it's also a concern about almost every graphics & photo app in existence: Most User Interfaces squander valuable vertical screen real estate, heedlessly and unnecessarily. Here's the situation: - Modern screens are much wider than tall. - Many people spend at least some of their productive time working on a little laptop screen. - Even with Retina displays, it's often necessary to limit screen res, for UI legibility. - Documents, layouts and graphics are just as likely to be portrait orientation, as landscape. So obviously vertical space is way more likely to be a problem than horizontal. When you're working on a portrait style page or a tall object, every last vertical pixel is precious. (Worst case scenario: Editing a portrait in PS Elements, you're lucky to have 30% of screen pixels for your image!! Absurd.) This is probably more of a request for the upcoming Affinity Photo app; but it sure would be useful to have in Designer, too: It would be über useful to have at least the option of getting all interface elements off to the sides to allocate all vertical resources to the document/page. 2 different UI layout presets, maybe? – 1 for landscape, 1 for portrait? Thanks for your consideration!
  20. I have 2 Macs. I know this is a per Mac issue. When I click the Export Persona Button (3rd button from left), the whole top of the program turns gray and the icons turn blurry. I click back on the Draw or Pixel Persona buttons and it is still gray with blurry icons. I tried to copy this issue on my MacBook Pro and no issue there! What can I do to fix this... iMac is 2009 with Yosemite, MacBook Pro is 2012 with Yosemite. All updates current as of today. I have tried to check "Reduce Transparency" and uncheck "LCD font smoothing" but these do not help. Also Yosemite seems to get the "blurry text" fever every so often, but that is an OS X issue i'm sure!
  21. I'm seeing this quite often: the tab bar is partly hidden by whatever is above it. I haven't paid attention to what exactly triggers it, or been able to reproduce it at will.
  22. So, I was browsing the Iphone App Store and came across this beautiful Dieter Rams inspired app called WTHR By David EIgena. I wanted see if I could recreate one of the screen entirely with Affinity Designer. Part of the reason I am doing this, is to see how I can utilize Affinity in different situations and workflows. Of course I don't have time to design an entire app for in a few hours but I can recreate the look for study purposes.Doing this sort of thing shows me where Affinity Designer is strongest. Working in different workflows also gives me a better understanding of how this application can replace other tools in my arsenal. After completing this exercise, the only thing I would wish is the ability to add multiple artboards in one file. Everything was created with Affinity with the exception of the IPhone Image which you can download here: http://www.teehanlax.com/tools/iphone/ Credit to Andrew Vega for supplying the iphone link resource in his Affinity training video
  23. The Navigator palette just stops updating when the zoom is 25% or less? When I zoom out, above 25%, it updates just fine. Zoom in, and it sticks at 25% no matter how low the zoom is. Just found this out while working on a project. It occurs on older (made with MAS version, other betas) and on new Documents with the current beta (v 1.0.1.9988). The Name area in the window updates the zoom no problem. I'm reposting this here in Bugs. The Plus and minus buttons work as they should, but as long as the zoom is less than 25%, the value there in the panel itself won't update until zoom is higher than 25%. To me this is kinda a bother, as it forces me to look at the top of the screen (where in non-full screen mode) the name of the currently active window/tab is. It's not visible at all in full screen, which means I have to mouse up to see what the zoom level is when the menu bar drops down on mouse-enter. Using the zoom in is helpful for me to get an idea of how the work looks when reduced down, like for thumbnails and the like.
