  1. Hi, I am trying out affinity Designer on the mac, and so far I loved it. I am facing one problem, which is importing illustrator files exported from rhinoceros 3D. Rhino 3D is a CAD software than can export to .ai files. however, when I try to open the .ai file in Affinity Designer I get the following error message: " Failed to open PDF file, the file could not be parsed". It is weird that the file is recognized as a pdf file although it is a .ai (illustrator file). When opening the exported rhino .ai file in illustrator, it does open but the file name is changed from *.ai to *.ai[converted]. I would rely like to use the affinity designer more, but since I deal a lot with files exported from rhino, this problem is not allowing me to depend on affinity Designer rather than illustrator. Regards,
  2. Blender has a way to render SVG files from freestyle renders. The attached SVG opens OK in Illustrator but both Affinity Designer and Photo claim "The file appears to be corrupted." Its just a cube :) 0001.svg
  3. I'm migrating some work from MS Publisher to Affinity Designer. I'm wondering what is considered "best practice" for this task. I understand from the in-app help that AD supports opening the file types listed below, but I'm not clear on the advantages / disadvantages of the types that are beyond "flat images" (eg: tiff, bmp, gif, jpeg). So my question is: what MS Publisher output files will provide the most utility for an AD file import? Is .pdf the only legit choice? Thanks.
  4. Hi all, does anyone have a clue why the raster parts of this pdf get pixelated so badly when I import it into Affinity Designer? Thanks! hubobaffinity_example.pdfpdf_import.tiff
  5. A newbie here, in fact I'm not very experienced with vector drawing at all. However over the last couple of years I've managed quite a few object drawings in EazyDraw. In fact I have more than a few and now I want to switch to Affinity Designer, so can anyone please tell me how to import EZdraw files into Affinity Designer?
  6. Hello guys. I would like to ask few questions regarding PSD import / export from Photoshop to Affinity and back. I use Photoshop CS6 in my PC and I have a plan to use Affinity Designer (or Photo later) to do comic book lettering. I use just few tools in PS like Shapes, Paths and Text layers, with some of blending options like Stroke, Drop shadow, Colour and gradient fill. I created one PSD file in PS containing layers with ballons and text for testing how it will be opened in Affinity Designer - option: Favour editable text over fidelity. Well, it looks quite good, but there are still some small issues. I create ballons as elipse (Shape tool) with the tail (Path) as non-destructive combination. AD export this combination as dectructed shape with no possibility to edit ellipse and tail indepently. Yes, still editable as curves but non destructive combinations from PS are gone. Is there something I can do in PS and/or AD to be able import connected shapes correctly? When I create ballon in AD as non desctuctive compound of Ellipse and curve, export it as PSD, then it is opened in PS as 3 layers (with clipping mask?) but the curve is not combined with the ellipsis as in AD. They look like separated shapes. Text layers are imported to AD as editable text, but some of settings are not the same e.g. I am missing “optical” kerning. Would it be possible to get this option in the future? When I export PSD from AD and open it in PS the text layers are rasterised and they are not editable anymore. Would it be possible to get this option in the future? Gradient fill of the Shape is imported/exported correctly but gradient fill as "blending option" of the layer tis imported to AD correctly but in export from AD to PS it is changed to simple colour. Some of my clients are quite OK to get flat 1 layer TIFF or high quality JPG, so there will be no issue. But some of them reqest to have editable PSD to be able do some minor changes by themslef (ususally text correction) if needed. They works with Adobe stuff on PCs so obviously I cannot push them to switch to Affinity’s products and Apple hardware. There are screenshots of my lettering test in Affinity Designer and Photoshop. Original file created in Photoshop: PSD opened in Affinity Designer: and PSD exported from AD and opened back in Photoshop:
  7. Would love to give Designer another shot, but I use sublayers in my AI files for mainly organizational purposes. When importing .ai file into Designer it brings in layers, but the sublayers are gone, so all the "insides" of the layers (hundreds of items) are all flat in the parent layers. Attached screenshots of a piece of my AI files layers and what I get in Designer.
  8. Hi all, I've taken a PSD file (exported from CS6) and imported it into Affinity Photo. Although the import worked fine and all layers/groups are as expected, I've found all layers that had the drop shadow layer effect applied from Photoshop have had the effect merged into the layer in Affinity Photo. So I can't remove or edit the layer effect. This is the only layer effect that the PSD uses so I can't tell if it would do this for all layer effects or if it's specific to drop shadow. Is this meant to happen or is there a way I can prevent it from flattening the layer in future imports? Thanks.
  9. Is there any way to scan a photograph and import the image with Affinity Photo? I am really wanting to remove the entire Photoshop program from my MacBook Pro, but unfortunately I need it to do a Twain import from time to time via scanner. Thanks for any help. If this is not a function of Affinity Photo now, perhaps the Affinity staff might take it for action? Danny
  10. If this had been asked before please accept my apology but, can I import my images from Aperture to Infinity Photo?
  11. Hey Affinity, Will AD be able to import Adobe Illustrator vector brush libraries? Would be very handy to be able to tap into the thousands of brushes out there... Keep up the awesome work!
  12. Is it possible to support an exported file from Inkscape that miss these...? - Corner Radius (Can be solved by turning curve to outline object) - Masking is lost **About masking; the SVG file which export from Illustrator, masking is lost too, but .ai .eps still work.
  13. Hi, Does anyone know how to import brushes into AD? I've looked at posts here and followed the instructions (ie clicked corner menu & selected 'import brushes') but .abr & .eps files are greyed out and I can't import anything. Do I have a glitch? Hoping someone can help. Cheers, Hannah
  14. I currently use Lightroom and PS. My workflow is this: I shoot with an Eye Fi card and it sends the files to a folder on my drive that LR "watches" and then when there are files to import, it auto-imports them. Is there such a function in Affinity at the moment?
  15. Affinity Photo (henceforth "AP") does a stellar job of importing from PSDs, but there are some usability improvements that would help to properly set user's expectations about the nature of the import process. For example, AP appears to rasterize Vector Smart Objects and Embedded Smart Objects into "pixel layers". Fortunately the user can determine the type of an imported layer quite easily by looking at the parenthetical text following its name, but AP's attempt to preserve layer names has the potential to set false expectations at-a-glance, as this image describes: As also noted in the above image, this can have significant usability implications for exporting to PSD, as rasterized layers may keep their default names (as imported by AP), but are in fact be pixel layers within the exported PSD. This confused me the first time I exported to PSD after initially importing from one. There are similar caveats for the layer names of other imported layers. For example: type layers are imported with their names, which suppresses AP's automatic layer naming for type layers based on their text content. It's likely that these layer names originated as auto-generated names in Photoshop to begin with. – Based on these observations, I have a few recommendations in the form of optional PSD import options for layer names: A "PSD Import" option to append " (Rasterized by Affinity Photo)" to the end of layers in a PSD that become pixel layers upon import into Affinity Photo A "PSD Import" option to remove names of type layers if the entire layer name exists as a substring in the type layer's text content, starting from the first character An option to review layers that have been rasterized upon importing a PSD Cheers, Joe
  16. Having bought Photo and loving it, I realised that most of my important images (thousands) were converted to DNG when imported into Lightroom... Any workarounds for using these with Photo?
  17. Is there a way to do this with Photo? If now now, will there be Please? :)
  18. Hi, Is there a reason why my Raw images open as 96 DPI instead of 300 DPI say like in PS? Why is it reducing the res on import? Thanks in advance!
  19. would be very useful if program can import and export 2D CAD.
  20. When I open an .ai file, the PDF Options window opens. There's a checkbox labeled "Favour editable text over fidelity." What does that mean in terms of subsequently working with the document?
  21. Out of curiosity, I always see any photo product have its own RAW import compatibility. The RAW support I see Apple release every now and then on their system updates, cannot be used for imports from your (or any other developer's) app ? I just wonder why every image app developer have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to RAW imports :P
  22. Hey, Love Affinity Designer – I see the distant light in the tunnel from Sans Adobe land! I'm guessing you know and love The Noun Project? A huge "free" pictograms collection growing by the minute. Well, they recently released a Mac client allowing me to browse icons and import the .SVG by dragging from the client directly. It is awesome. However, Affinity Designer (Beta) doesn't support dragging from the client. I have to drag to e.g. Pages and then into Affinity Designer. Would love to see improved drag support for .SVG! Johan
  23. He everybody! I imported a pdf file that was created in Adobe InDesign. This pdf was intended for professional printing purposes. Unfortunately InDesign separated most of the objects to small areas, so instead of some objects there are hundreds of areas next to each other. Between adjacent areas there are white lines visible. These white lines represent the zero-pixel-boarders of the objects and are always visible, no matter which zoom setting (10% or 100000%) In Acrobat reader the lines can (visually) be reduce be disabling anti-aliasing in preferences. Is there any option to reduce those lines, at least for new image exports (png / jpg) that are made out of AD? Thanks for your help, H-Nes
