  1. When importing text boxes from an .ai file, the text comes in as Artistic (stretch the boundary box and the letters change size rather than rearranging themselves to fit as many words as possible within the box's width). Is there a way to convert that type of text into ...and I don't know the term... "regular" text?
  2. When I open an .ai file, the PDF Options window opens. There's a checkbox labeled "Favour editable text over fidelity." What does that mean in terms of subsequently working with the document?
  3. I am trying to use Affinity with my colleague who uses Adobe Illustrator (latest version). He saved a file as an EPS and I tried to open it with Affinity, it was a total disaster. He then saved it as an AI file and it is not as bad but still does not look the same. I thought this was supposed to be totally compatible with AI?
  4. I'm a veteran Illustrator user who recently purchased AD. I am now comparing "Stroke" features between the two apps. Here are my questions: 1) Sketch a rectangle and give it an opaque color, then sketch a second rectangle above it and give your second rectangle X% Opacity. Now tick / Enable "Stroke" in the Effects. Slowly move the Radius to the right and you will then suddenly see your X% Opacity become complete Opaque. Why? 2) In Illustrator I can put a Stroke on a rectangle and then make that stroke to be Centered or Inside or Outside. But AD is very different. When I sketch a rectangle in AD and then when I add a "Line" to it, I am presented with a large number of options, but the ability to move that Line to the Outside or Inside is mysteriously absent. So I was thinking to myself, well, maybe the developers of AD want me to use the "Stroke" Effect instead. And truly, when I apply a Stroke, I have the 3 options available (Center, Inside, Outside). But the disadvantage to using Stroke is that the corners are always curved. Why is that? 3) Stroke does not seem to be a replacement for Line. Try this. Sketch a rectangle but set Fill and Line to NONE. Now tick/Enable Stroke and expand the Radius. Nothing appears on screen at all! But as soon as I give it a fill color, then the Stroke magically appears. It seems a bit strange. If Line would give me the option to have Center or Inside or Outside, this wouldn't matter as I could then use Line instead. 4) Illustrator empowers me to add multiple strokes to the same object, and when I set those strokes behind the fill, I can then do some pretty interesting things. I cannot seem to find a way to do this in AD. 5) It seems that AD only allows me to add a gradient to a Stroke but not to a Line. This is unfortunate because I cannot seem to create a Stroke WITHOUT rounded corners. 6) Illustrator CC has some powerful new Corner features for Strokes. For example, I can sketch a rectangle and then give it a 5pt stroke and then I can grab any one of the 4 round tabs and drag inward to give all 4 corners the same roundness. Furthermore, I can use Illustrator's Direct Selection tool to draw a selection rec around only on of the corners, which will enable me to round that one corner independently of the others. How can I accomplish the same in AD? 7) Dashed lines and Arrowheads are very common in my work but such features appear to be absent in the current version of AD? 8) In Illustrator, I can sketch a line or Stroke a box and then have "Width Profile" that I can choose in the Stroke panel. This can be very useful at times. For example, in Illustrator, if I sketch a line that is 26pt thickness and then give it Width Profile 4, the 26pt thickness decreases linearly to zero, giving it the shape of a spike. Can such be done in AD? 9) Another tool I always use in Illustrator when dealing with Strokes and Objects is the CUT tool. I can't seem to find it in AD. How do I sketch a rectangle and then cut pieces out of it? Sorry for all the questions, but Strokes and Corners and Cutting are the biggest part of what I do in Illustrator, and such is what I intend to do in AD as well. Thanks.
  5. Affinity Designer is fantastic. Not because I'm a great drawer or illustrator. I'm printing and prepress professional and in the past week I have had two times where it Illustrator or Indesign could not take an existing PDF and deal with the file right. Designer was able to bring in the PDF and let us alter it to get the vector logo out. I do this regularly but I usually don't get errors importing into Illustrator but I did on this one and Designer saved us. Today a font was not embedded in a PDF that someone created in Corel. We were able to install the font on the Mac, open the PDF in Affinity, adjust a little bit because the person did a poor job designing and resaved - the ad came out perfect! I'm looking forward to the page layout program with how well Designer is working.
  6. Hi folks; maybe this already exists somewhere and I wasn't able to find it by now, if not, then consider this to be a request: When I'm drawing something inside Illustrator, I can hit SPACEBAR to readjust the position of my point or shape as I'm drawing. This was one of the first things I missed when trying out Affinity. It's not like drawing a point, hitting a, changing its position and then continue drawing would be such a bug deal, but that Spacebar-thing really helps getting into Hyperflowmode. Something that AD is usually quite good at :) So keep it coming guys, cheers
  7. Hello Guys! I made a small tutorial about the similarities between the Adobe Illustrator/Affinity Designer basic tools. I thought there might be some people coming from Ai who are interested. http://www.mediomix.de/affinity-designer-basics-spot-comparison-adobe-illustrator-tools/
  8. Just did my first simple project. The art was intended for use in Adobe After Effects. I need to keep the art as vector art and the layers need to be kept intact when imported into AE. Photoshop does not work because the vector art is rasterized. EPS does not work because the separate layers are not recognized by AE. To my knowledge, only native AI files work for this in AE. Thanks.
  9. Hi, I'm having trouble selecting objects in a document that I originally created in Adobe Illustrator. What am I missing? :) Thanks, Kate
  10. I try to convert some work from Adobe Illustrator. I made some logo design in Adobe Illustrator. As Illustrator format basically contains an embedded PDF it's pretty easy to see a preview just using QuickView in Mac OS. The format was imported without issues but there might be a general issue correctly respect the kerning information from the font. There are some huge gaps between specific symbol groups mostly related to the uppercase "A" character. At least this is the place where it's most obvious that there is something wrong. I did two PNG exports of the original file rendered by Affinity and Illustrator. I think it's pretty obvious what's wrong. Is better font support on the roadmap or is that some specific issue with some font files? Thanks for support and clarification!
  11. Hello, It would be great if Affinity would support smart copy/paste and preserve vector capabilities within it's software support family such as Photoshop and Illustrator. We often create a shape in Affinity and copy/paste it in Photoshop makes a bitmap image. Would be great if it would create a Smart Object just as illustrator would. Other than that, great software.
  12. Hey guys, I'm wondering if there is an easy way to move sublayers to their own layers like Illustrators "Release to Layers (Sequence)" Command. Thanks and great job on the app! ;)
  13. A great feature with Illustrator (and Cinema 4D too) is the ability to interactively manipulate individual characters (eg. size, kerning, rotation...). It would be great to have a such feature across all your apps. Great work, keep on going!
