  1. Hello! I was recently re-exporting old Affinity Designer files using 1.6.0 for Mac and noticed banning appearing in subtle gradients. So I reset all of my settings/preferences in 1.6.0, unchecked "Dither gradients" in Performance settings, created a new file with a subtle gradient, and exported it. Both rendered in Affinity Designer and as an export, visible gradient banning appears. It's more visible if the gradient is stretched across a large area and the amount of color change is subtle. My hunch is something changed between AD 1.4.x and 1.6.0 regarding how gradients are rendered. Changing color from RGB/8 to RGB/16 or RGB/32 (HDR) doesn't make any difference. I've attached an example "Banding" file showing the issue, along with an examples of old and new outputs. Thanks for any help you can offer! Banding.afdesign
  2. Hi there, my name is Dominik Kandravý. Minimalist and self-taught illustrator from Czech Republic. I mostly create minimal illustrations using simple shapes and geometry. However in this case (poster for my friend) I tried to do something more complex - Well, this is Darth Vader! PS: You can check few of my illustrations on https://dribbble.com/kndrv
  3. Hello guys! I'm looking for a way to create gradients that are made of solid bands (show banding), as opposed to have them dithered. I understand that the dither is to make them look smoother. But for a particular project I am working on, I need them with banding. I can accomplish this in Photoshop. Its gradient tool bar has a Dither tick box. So you have the option. I thought I found something similar in Affinity Photo/Designer. In Preferences/Performance>"Dither Gradients". But this tick box doesn't seem to affect the Gradient tool in Photo or the Fill Tool in Designer. Maybe it refers to something else? Any ideas how could I produce such gradients? Many thanks!
  4. Hi. I'm not sure whether this is a bug or done intentionally. If I created a gradient-filled-shape in AD. Then the shape is skewed. Then export it to SVG. The resulting SVG file created an image in place of that gradient. Thanks.
  5. I followed these steps to a fresh image (a tiff): Add new pixel layer Change blend mode (Overlay) Select gradient tool and draw gradient This results in image changing. Then when I undo (clicking back up the history stack or dragging Position slider), the image change is left as it was. Looks like a refresh issue, as dragging a paint brush over (not painting) results in image being restored to what it should be under the brush. Image attached. gradient issue.afphoto
  6. Hallo, I Think i have found a bug, There isn't a gradient, three letters are withe and one is black. See picture attached. greetings Steffen
  7. Gradients are incredibly difficult to figure out. And when I finally do figure out how to get the stops and their colors right, the little Add Fill to Palette icon on Gradient Swatch panel doesn't save them correctly, so all my work is lost. What's that button there for if it won't actually save the gradient? You won't be able to tell it, but in the attached image, the user interface has seemingly locked up because I tried to change the color of a gradient stop by clicking a color in the Swatch panel. No UI widgets work: no scroll bars or menus or anything. I just have to keep clicking on things and pressing Escape for a minute before the program becomes responsive again. So far I haven't lost work because of this hang, but I haven't figured out exactly what causes it or what I do that finally cures it.
  8. Using Designer 1.6, I have a rectangular shape with a non-uniform (gradient) fill and some text inside, represented by shape #1 above (without the text, of course). I would like to apply a transparency effect where the edges of the shape fade off into being completely transparent. In order to try and describe what I am trying to do here, I made shape #2. I want the inner edge of the black border to be completely opaque with whatever is directly under it, the outer edge be completely transparent, and a gradient transition fill in between. In shape #3, I tried to use the Outline layer effect, as shown here: ...and kind of got what I am trying to do, but not quite. Maybe I need to use a duplicate layer and use it to mask out the border of the original shape? I have a feeling I am really close with this, but missing some step somewhere.
  9. So I'm on the band wagon seeing as PS has gone subscription based. I have Designer and Photo and was happy, kind of. I noticed the performance was very poor on AP. Zooming in on a WIP layer would take too long to update/refresh. I mean, its maybe half a second but it's enough to kill your thought process and kind of disorientates you. What I noticed was the biggest lagger was gradients. A simple gradient overlaid on to my highest level layer. Any attempt at changing the angle of this gradient would cause it to refresh once every second, maybe jumping 20° each time. Totally unusable and more to the point, frustrating. I'm only running onboard graphics card on my Dell i7, 16GB, 1TB SSD but PS was never a problem. I hit the forums to find out what I could do to get some speed in to AP. I tried it all and none of it worked. Changed the render setting to WARP, no change. Allocated more RAM, no change. I then remembered that my music production software wasn't too keen on SpeedStep being enabled as the processor got confused and jumped about from 20% to 70% whilst using particluar VSTs. Thinking about this, I popped in to my BIOS. Speedstep was turned off (which I left as it was to keep my music software happy) but I had another setting in my BIOS that was switchable.... TurboBoost. I switched this off and rebooted in to windows. Opened up the same file. Placed a gradient layer on top and dragged. NIGHT AND DAY!!! It was like using PS again. Smooth as a babies back side. Zooming in and out causes instant (not literally) refreshes. Scrolling through the Layer blend types is almost invisible as it changes the blending properties real time. The thumbnails on the layers panel update instantly with no lag. I've yet to try other things out that was causing me frustration but thought I'd post this on here in case it hasn't been addressed yet. I noticed that there seems to be problems with the higher end systems running AP so maybe its this Turbo Boost thing on Intel based processors. Anyways. My first post here so, Hello! Hope this may help some frustrated AP users. Turn off TurboBoost in your BIOS and hopefully it'll cure your lagging issues. Also check your DPI scaling in control panel!!! When I'm on 100%, the lagging is terrible. When I change to 150% (Recommended), the lag disappears.
  10. Sometimes I need to affect only a very narrow range. That is impossible with a curve. Here it would be helpful if I could switch from curve-drawing to manual drawing with a pen-tool

  12. Hi there, When using the gradient tool, how can I create multiple gradients in a single layer? I can do this in PS simply by clicking and dragging multiple times. In Affinity Photo, it seems to limit me to one gradient per layer - a bit of a workflow nightmare! Also, is it possible to create gradient presets? It's very time-consuming to change the default colours constantly. Many thanks!
  13. Hi, I would like to ad radial gradient overlay effect to an artwork and I'm wondering how can I get rid of the annoying Saturn rings – see screenshot – and make it smooth as possible. Thanks a lot for your help! I'm using Affinity Designer 1.5.5.
  14. I'd like to see an additional Gradient Type added to the option list: Square I find it very useful. Easier than using two linear gradients to get a simple star effect. Here is a screen shot from Corel Draw Thanks for your consideration. Love Affinity Photo on my PC!
  15. hi it seems not possible to use the toll Gradient / type bitmap / choose a bitmap file to fill a shape on the iPad version, as it is possible on Mac OS version It seems also not possible to visualize in iPad a file from Mac OS version with a shape filled with gradient toll / type bitmap those features will be available? thanks
  16. for the current v1.5.1.52 and the version before in the RAW/Develop Persona Sometimes I get the problem when I make 2 or more gradient or elliptic overlays that one of the overlays will stop working with lights and shawows panel. I think the transitions of the gradients are still very harsh too, even when I make them very big to smoothen it
  17. Hi again, as I was importing some of my SVGs, I noticed some slight issues with their appearance in Affinity. So, I did some testing and found out what was causing these issues. I've created a separate file for each bug (14 in total). It should become clear by following the instructions below. If not, just let me know! Disclaimer: Importing the first file will (most likely) make Affinity crash. Please save your work progress before trying! Instructions: 1. Open the attached files in a web browser 2. Now import them into Affinity (Photo or Designer) 3. Compare both versions closely Cheers! ------------------------------------------- Affinity Designer Version: 1.5.1.43 Affinity Photo Version: 1.5.1.54 Operating System: Windows 10 1_crash_when_colour_capitalised.svg 2_stroke_although_colour_not_set.svg 3_no_fill_when_colour_capitalised.svg 4_incorrect_gradients_when_gradientUnits_objectBoundingBox.svg 5_nested_svgs.svg 6_no_repetitive_gradients.svg 7_stroke_dasharray_wrong_direction_starting_point_array_too_short.svg 8_no_patterns.svg 9_incorrect_skewing.svg 10_no_drop_shadows.svg 11_no_blending.svg 12_close_path_and_moveToEnd(!).svg 13_no_masking.svg 14_no_markers.svg
  18. As a new user (using Beta before purchase) I'm not sure how much user-ignorance is involved here, but... a) moving mid-point(s) has no effect on gradient (see attached png) b) To re-visit Gradient for editing, Help file says to Modify Gradient: with Gradient Tool selected, make Layer active, enabling editing stops, position, colours etc. But no Gradient controls appear on gradient. Any advice on this would be welcome
  19. I am trying to use the gradient tool on a mask layer to fade either side of a photo I'm compositing. I create a gradient on one side, and switch tools to commit it, then when I make another gradient on the other side, it removes/resets the previous gradient and overwrites it with the new one. Where is the commit gradient button? How to save and get out of the live gradient tool mode? Also for extra credit, how to make radial gradients?
  20. Would love to see some sort of "right angled" snap enabled gradient tool feature (perhaps with a modifier key). When dragging out the gradient tool often I need to drag it 90 degrees perpendicular from an edge to get a nice even gradient that isn't angled. See attached. Second image is the desired behaviour, 90 degrees perpendicular to the centre edge. Illustrator sort of handles this with a dashed line box as you drag the gradient tool but it doesn't snap. A snap would be helpful to ensure it's at 90.
  21. Why? Before rasterize: After rectangle rasterize: Expected:
  22. Do you use the gradient tool? It appears in all sorts of places in AP. Are you a bit irritated with the default white-to-grey gradient? Would you prefer it to be white-to-black without having to click nodes and colour settings? Here's how I do this. I don't know why it happens, but it's jolly handy. In the gradient tool context toolbar, change Type to your choice, eg. Elliptical. Click on colour box. Drop-down box appears. Clicking on Gradient shows the default white to grey gradient line. Here's the magic: Click on the 'None' tab and then the 'Gradient' tab. Ole! White to black gradient.
  23. Hi There! First of all, I would like to write that I am in love with Affinity Designer I use it every day. Almost forgot AI! Everything works great, but I have a problem with a gradient. In program everything is ok, my gradient looks good, but when I export to pdf, the gradient does not display. It's just a white color... Does anyone know what's going on? The gradient in AD. After export to print pdf... I would be grateful for any help ;(!
  24. I don't quite understand the behavior of the Gradient tool. I know what it is for and how to use. The problem I have with it is that if I click outside the image or on another layer before I have finished working with the Gradient, there is no way to bring it back so that I can continue making adjustments. Which means I have to be very careful when I use it. At least with some other destructive adjustments, you have to click on Apply before the changes become final, but in this case there is no such a thing. Am I missing something? Is there a way that i am not aware of to bring back the gradient tool if I happen to click outside the image or on another layer by mistake before I am done with it? Thanks!
  25. Either I am overlooking an obvious step (as I've been known to do) or Overlays in the Develop persona are not working on the AirPad 2. Bring in a RAW image, click on Overlays, select Brush Overlay, and in the context toolbar select Show Overlay. When I brush on an area of the canvas with the paintbrush, I expected to paint in a red overlay like in the RAW: Overlays on Vimeo video but I don't see any change whatsoever. No red glow where I've brushed. No indication that I have marked the canvas at all. If I go to the next step in the Help instructions and select an adjustment, there is no change in the image. What am I doing wrong?
