  1. To me, the lasso/ freehand selection tool (and polygonal selection tools) are a must have in my daily workflow. For very irregular selections, they are indispensable, especially when you also have to avoid selecting other objects close-by. It still surprises me on a regular basis that I cannot use such a vital tool after having used other software that have such selection tools. Please add these selection tools to Designer and Publisher!
  2. I'd like to make a request for something I used ALL the time in Macromedia FreeHand: the Find & Replace Graphics panel. It is one of the most time saving and amazing things even put into graphics software and I miss it greatly. Adobe still has a page up with some very old looking screenshots of it from Mac OS 9: https://www.adobe.com/support/freehand/programs/creating_animations/creating_animations03.html You could basically find anything in your document and replace it with something completely different. Colors, strokes, stroke widths, symbols, overprint attributes. The list goes on. It was an amazing boon to productivity when dealing with very detailed illustrations or many-page documents.
  3. I'm currently using the Windows Beta and so far very impressed (definitely going to buy when it's released). I like the fact that 'Paste Inside' is an option like in good old Macromedia Freehand. I have another Freehand feature I'd love to see: Attach Text to Path I know we have the text tool that you can use to click on a path edge and start typing/paste text, but it is so much more intuitive (and quicker) to select existing text and a shape, then just 'Attach Text to Path'. Whilst we're at it, I think a tick box for 'show/hide path' would also be of massive benefit. It feels like unnecessary extra steps to have to clone a path, then flow text around it, then line it up with the original path. This missing feature had always bugged me about Illustrator.
  4. A friend of mine has finally moved to Affinity Designer on his Mac. He has a large library of files he created in Adobe Freehand going back decades. One of the big Designer selling points was that he was able to read these files in Designer with fairly good results. However, since upgrading to macOS Mojave he can no longer open these files in Designer. Any ideas or suggestions?
  5. As a FreeHand jockey whose 32-bit MacBook Pro finally went to its reward, AD is exactly what I've been looking for. So far, the beta performs beautifully. Very few problems. Amazingly stable for a beta… Huge kudos to AD developers for this wonderful program! When it's released, I'll be the first in line. The FreeHand tools (or facsimiles) I'm hoping for include: Add points & simplify points Envelope warping (or some kind of object-distortion tool) 3D rotation (perspective tool) Fisheye lens Roughen effect Expand Stroke, Stroke to path & Inset path Text flow around objects, along paths & flow between text boxes Multiple pages, with a scratch area for layout design work A lot to expect, I know. But when Affinity Designer can do these things, then it really is adios, Illustrator... I've heard that AD developers may be working on opening Freehand files. If so, then I DO believe in Santa Claus! Also, IMHO, pro-level CYMK prepress isn't a big priority since the vast majority of users (even Illustrator users) don't do 4-color publishing. Thanks again for filling a big hole in the Mac vector sphere...
  6. I think it's gonna be a great improvement if you can add the same brush stabilizer, but for the Freehand selection tool. It would make it easier and more accurate especially on the iPad. Thank you
  7. Hey Everyone, I'm using the projects in the workbook. I was learning the freehand tool and it is not working properly. When I try to use it, I draw the selection you can see in the "desired" pic below. However, when I release, I end up with a semi-circle which does not look like what I drew. It also doesn't match what's in the book. Has anyone had this problem? Am I doing something incorrectly? Please help! I'm using the most current updated Mac OS X. I've tried closing other programs, reinstalling affinity, and all the other usual solutions.
  8. I have a FH file that extensively uses the glow effect; I am wondering if AD can't open that? Another FH files without the effect appears to be able to open the file.
  9. I am having an issue with the Freehand brush. If I go in the textured brushes and select a stroke it does not do that stroke. I have to select the stroke again and then it converts the line to the selected stroke. I have to repeat this for every stroke because it always reverts to the default stroke. How can I select a stroke and have it use that stroke ? Thank.
  10. Hello, In an effort to transition from Photoshop to Photo, I thought I'd try to at least establish a freehand sketch for a design I'm working on in Photo rather than Photoshop. I tend to use a simple hard round brush with shape dynamics enabled in PS and Jitter determined by Pen Pressure. With Photo, I've selected an equivalent brush under the Basics and set Size Jitter to Pressure under Dynamics. So far so good. The problem I'm experiencing is that when I sketch a freehand curved line in Photo, the precision isn't quite there. The curve I draw is often made up of a series of small (and sometimes not so small) straight lines rather than following the pen exactly. It's as if the software is unable to keep up with the pen and interpolates between two points along the movement of the pen. Photoshop doesn't do this. Has anyone experienced this? Is it a known issue and if so, will it be addressed? Having the line follow the pen exactly is critical Thanks, -grant
  11. I know there are a lot of FreeHand users on this forum since we have had discussions in the past and I was wondering how successful people are getting it to work on a modern computer? When I try to import FH work into Affinity I can't 100% of it to come across so somehow I need to get Snow Leopard to work. I was wondering if anyone was using using FH via virtualization? I tried to get SL to run via VMware's Fusion but it seems like wants to have SL Server(?) which doesn't make any sense to me. Anyways it someone has this set up I would really like to know how it is done. I've got a lot of FH work stored that I would love to access again and I have 64gb of ram so I can easily run two operating systems side by side.
  12. Hello When I open .fh11 files I miss my texture (on my WinXP in Freehand I see them). Is there any way to activate the texture I added in my old files? thx ADD
  13. I note, quite rightly, there is discussion about the ability to open Freehand files. Not sure if this has been mplemented. Doesn't look like it. I'd also like to ask that Canvas files could be opened, too. I have most of my work on this (and I have to keep going back two systems to open them). Can I send some files for viewing? If so, where to?
  14. In working with Affinity Photo (MAC, 5.1), I usually used the selection brush. Today I realized I don't have the freehand selection tool. The Help search does not help.
  15. Bonjour, Est ce qu'il y a un moyen de faire fonctionner Affinity Designer sous Mac os X 10.6.8. Car j'ai des fichiers FreeHand que je voudrais transformer pour utiliser Affinity Designer. Merci
  16. Hi Affinity Developers, First of all a huge word of thanks for all the efforts and good ideas that went into Affinity Designer. It is really refreshing to have someone make a clean start on a vector drawing program. I think the interface in general is a big improvement over AI. I also really love the way AD handles masks, which I find is a pain in AI. The ability to combine raster and vector in one program is a huge plus, and it's main selling point, I think. AD is still in its early stages of development, so a direct comparison with AI is unfair (also because of the price difference), yet, because I have AI CS5 installed, I still don't use AD as often as I would like. The main reasons for this are the path editing tools and the freehand drawing of vector paths. These two functions are the bread and butter part of any vector drawing program, and AI still handles some things better than AD. Let me elaborate: I think the pen tool is way better than it's equivalent in AI (actually I hate the pen tool in AI!). But I confess that I have the plugin Inkscribe installed and this makes a big difference. This is basically a combination of the pen tool with path editing tools. When comparing inkscribe and ADs Pen & path editing tools there are some things I really miss. The first thing is the way Inkscribe deletes nodes: instead of the curve just falling apart it spreads the load between the next two nodes and attempts to keep the curve intact. This is a BIG deal for me, as it makes cleaning up paths much easier. Also it give the ability to add nodes to the tangent point on a line, so you get handles at 90 and 45 degree angles, which is a great way to make editing paths easier. Overall I think the pen tool is very good in AD, but I miss the ability to snap handles (to the grid, for instance) or constrain them to 45 or 90 degrees, also after this is drawn. This is better in AI and I hope AD will try to replicate this behavior. Something I find one of the most annoying things in AD though is that it is very hard to delete a segment of a line. This should be as easy as clicking on a segment and deleting it. Now I can't really figure out how to do it at all properly, and it needs way to many steps  Another thing that keeps me using illustrator is the freehand drawing tools. IMHO these are still superior to AD at the moment, for the following reasons: Being able to adjust setting for smoothness and accuracy The ability to redraw paths The ability to extend a drawn path the ability to smooth a path the ability to easily connect or close a path These 5 things are lacking in AD, and it makes the pencil tool rather unusable at the moment for me, even if I think the brush engine is much nicer. Another thing I would love to see is a functionality like the Dynamic Sketch plugin for AI. This adds to great features to the regular pencil: a path eraser, which erases up to an intersection, really speeding up a drawing workflow. It also will automatically connect paths in some situations. intelligent path joining, meaning you can draw two intersecting paths and the program creates a connected line from it, this is really great when drawing paths freehand, as you don't have to be to fussy with angles and edges Also the ability to change setting for smoothness and accuracy after the path is drawn is nice. I hope that AD would be able to integrate some of this functionality in its program in the future so I can forget about AI… :P Some other things I would like to see: (mentioned by others as well, this is just my list) Multiple strokes & fills live paint, or an even better way to fill shapes quickly Symmetry tools (like Manga Studio / Sketchbook pro) Artboards and/or pages Knife & Scissors tools I hope this post is not too negative. As I said AD is onto great things and I really hope to see it grow as the best in the business!
  17. Hi! I would like to ask for having some features similar to Freehand, with wich I used to create everything: logos, baners... and also LAYOUTS. I made even a newspaper :) I know it´s not between the core skills Freehand was designed for, but I was thankful because of its possibilities. It is the only thing I miss: A MULTIPAGE BOARD. Right now, you can create ONLY one page per document. I wonder if it will be possible to create several pages in the same document.
  18. Maybe we should all be looking to PhotoLine, Gimp, Scribus and InkScape for feature inspiration rather than Adobe, Corel and Xara. At least we'd know that the features are possible and available for implementation rather than blocked by a murder of laywers looking for a creative way to crush the little upstart. Any thoughts on this?
  19. Hi Guys, would like to see the following function in Affinity Designer soon: Known from FreeHand, multiple pasting objects with number, move, rotate and size. This would facilitate work so many. Greeting leichtwiesahne Hi Guys, möchte gerne folgende Funktion in Affinity Designer bald sehen: Bekannt aus Freehand, Mehrfach Einfügen von Objekten mit Anzahl, verschieben, rotieren and Größe. Dies würde so manch eine arbeit erleichtern. Gruß leichtwiesahne
  20. Good work peeps, every update the freehand vector brush tool improves and gets quicker and more fluent I'm hoping it's gonna be as great as Manga studio vector pen brush or mischief with the added ability to export and use in a pro manor - just did some exports to pdf and all vector info is retained, whereas in the previous version it would rasterise most of the vector work - the attached pic is a character Eric Idol who is the band mascot for the band THE IDOL DEAD - I'd love to be able to do the next ldol Dead job with affinity now things are getting quicker - but it's a new tour T-shirt which requires Halftones and spots - DAMN! looks like it's back to illustrator and Vectoraster or Manga studio (AWESOME HALFTONES but no vector or spot output) and InDesign - IF ONLY..............
  21. I have tried adding .fh11 to old Freehand MX files (that had no suffix), as suggested, but they just lose their thumbnail image and still refuse to open :( But I have just duplicated and added .eps to an old Freehand MX file (that had no suffix) and it opened successfully YAY!
  22. Any chance that in future versions it will be possible to open Freehand files? I always have and had my graphics drawn in Freehand (version MX on Mac OSX 10.6 and over 30 years of work) and it is almost impossible to convert all this work. So if I can import a freehand drawing, work on it and save it as an Affinity-file, that would be wonderfull!
  23. HI, Like myself, most Freehand users are still running very old copies of Freehand on some very old Apple Macs… and still earning a living. It's not because of some stick-in-the-mud attitude to change, but simply because it's still a superior tool in comparison to AI. I personally have been hanging on for something more intuitive than AI to come along for over 10 years - I think this is probably the best I've seen yet. After using the Beta for a few hours I'm about to start my next project using it and see how far I get. Most FH users started with Freehand back in the 80s/90s at agencies across the globe. They're now a hugely experienced, influential bunch as this now famous thread will attest: http://www.creativereview.co.uk/back-issues/creative-review/2009/march-20091/freehand-anonymous It would be more than worth your while engaging with them. We don't necessarily want a Freehand "Clone" but some familiar features and workflow would help ease the transition - and it wouldn't take much to ease the transition as Adobe have now almost pulled the shutter down on all Macromedia products. The Freehand requests seem to be all over the shop and perhaps a specific area on the Forum where we can place them all would be an idea. It would also help cultivate a FH community that you can engage with. S
  24. Freehand had the option to: Xtras > Delete > Empty Text Blocks Basically cleaned up all those empty text boxes that get created when you have the text tool selected and accidentally create a text box by clicking/dragging on the page. These sometimes appear as small crosses/boxes* on a PDF. Can accidentally get grouped with other objects on the page making the group larger than necessary. Can get selected when dragging a marquee and end up in places you hadn't intended. General pain in the backside. Thanks
  25. Rather than on the Affinity Facebook page, I'll post my suggestions here. As I said, as a Freehand user, I miss a simple but complete Transform pad, including x-y move tool (with duplicate options), percentage scaling (with options like scale strokes, content...), flipping, etc. I know the page features will grow in the upcoming version but including configurable bleeding space around the pages (to manage crop marks and other useful information) would be great.
