  1. Affinity's light mode UI — in the document setup — has been giving me a headache for months. When you set proportional dimensions, the icon disappears, or becomes so light that you can't see it. And the anchor/rescale active states are reversed. When you chose rescale, the rescale option is greyed out and the anchor option turns white. Which is also wrong. I mentioned this to support months ago, but nothing came of it. Just pointing it out again because it's become highly annoying and time-consuming. The attached screenshot is what it looks like when you set proportional resizing and rescaling. Looking at it, you wouldn't have a clue.
  2. I've just completed a large project ready for printing; my first using Affinity Designer. While working, I made a series of notes as I came across things I couldn't do, or which behaved in a manner I didn't expect. I'm happy to post feature requests, but I thought I'd ask here first in case some of these things have been disregarded, or perhaps there's a way I don't know of to do what I'm trying to do. THINGS I WANT TO BE ABLE TO DO IN AFFINITY DESIGNER: ☐Hover pen tool over anchor point (which becomes visible at that point) at end of unjoined line without first selecting the path, and click to activate it and continue drawing. ☐Join two open paths by clicking on each in turn with the pen tool, rather than having to select two paths and choose the Join command. ☐Eye dropper - copy styles to selected object or text, as well as colours and gradients. ☐Continuous export in Export Persona: it's always greyed out; why? This would be a really useful feature if I could use it. ☐Insert in front/behind/inside: keyboard shortcuts please ☐Stroke presets to click on; also up / down arrow to change stroke by preset increments. Is there a keyboard shortcut to change the point size up/down by single rather than double increments? ☐Use the direct selection tool to select a segment of a path, and copy just that segment. When I try this with the node tool, the whole shape is selected rather than just the part I wanted. I'd rather not have to drag a marquee around the part I'm trying to select; just choosing a couple of anchor points should do the trick in my opinion. ☐Command+Shift+{ is supposed to be the shortcut for range left text. Half the time it performs an operation called Move Nodes to Bottom - what even is that, and why does it get in the way of range left text? ☐Default leading is the same as the font size - needs to be defined as a percentage, eg. 120% of font size. This is really important! I really hope this is just a hidden option that I haven't yet been able to find. ☐Document setup box should close when Return (or another key, like esc) is pressed. It’s super annoying having to pick up the mouse each time to close the dialogue box. ☐Have a padlock as part of each layer to simplify locking and unlocking layers. I’m aware I can select the padlock at the top of the layers panel, and that I can CTRL click to lock - but as I’m doing this so often, one more movement of the mouse or an extra click really does feel cumbersome and not fluid at all.
  3. I created several document presets for specific document sizes I use often. All of them are set to "Create Artboard". When I go to File-New- I can see my list of personalized presets and select the one I want to work with. An artboard opens correctly. However, when I want to add a new artboard, I click on the New Artboard Tool and all I can add is the same size of artboard as the one already open. The dropdown menu under Artboard: Size: Document shows neither my presets nor any Print or Press Ready options, but all the others instead. I attempted changing the size in the Document Setup corresponding to the new Artboard, but the Page Preset is grayed and set to "Custom", so I cannot change the selection. The Dimensions sections are also grayed in the mentioned popup menu and the Transform menu as well. I wonder... Isn't there a place where I can select the size of a new artboard when adding a new one? If I have to manually insert its dimensions when it is a frequent size I use, it´s a waste of time. I should be able to access these presets from places other than the New Document. I have attempted the same steps both in AD 2.3.1 and also in 2.4.0.2222 (BETA), but the result is the same. I would appreciate any comment leading to solving this issue. 4. Since Publisher v.2.0 till 2.2.0, I noticed (but was "lazy" to report here) that you could not always replace or modify a number in these fields as expected: If you modify only the number value (not the letters used for units) in width/height fields, only the first key pressed (or delete key) is taken in account. In Document settings > Width or Height fields Double-click on the number, to select only the number, not the unit: [210 mm] or insert the cursor into or just after the number: [2|10 mm or 210| mm — not 210 |mm nor 210 mm] Type a new value (2 or 3 digits long, say 420), to replace or complete it The Mac beeps after typing the first digit, and only the first digit is entered: [4]. The rest [20] is lost Need to re-click in the field to type the rest again. (The same happens if you insert the cursor in the number instead of selecting the number.) Note: It doesn't happen if, at step 1., I do a single- or a triple-click in the field, so that everything is selected. But old habits are difficult to change; in other apps, I'm used to select only values to edit by double-clicking on it, or clicking inside it, and it should certainly be possible to do the same in Affinty's.
  5. I've muddled through two book projects. Now, I'm trying to draw up a standards documents for future projects. Can someone help me to understand the relationships between the following elements? New Document Setup Color Profile Adjustment Layers Embedded Images that contain color Conversion of color images to Grayscale Why PDF/X doesn't like Greyscale D50 color profile During the first two books, I didn't know about adjustment layers. Browsing the forums today, I learned that color images can be turned black and white. This would save me the step of converting images to grayscale before embedding them into AP. I want to be certain that no color appears in the PDF.
  6. I feel I ought to apologise because I know that some will think this pedantic nonsense, but there is no escaping a simple reality - DPI is not the same as PPI, and it does not belong in any dialogue box. The world is awash with confusion over this. Designers, publishers, photo editing, ALL need to know PPI. The only people that need to use DPI are the print shops and printing presses. DPI has no place in any software in Affinity, or anywhere in the desktop publishing office or suite. I await thine fury!..............(but I can prove it if you so must) PS, the dialogue box should really range from about 90 then 180 then 260 300 360 and stop there. 360 being the absolute maximum. No quality improvement is available or visible after 360.
  7. I have previously used Graphic for Mac 3.1 this provides the ability to set a scale for a document. eg 1: 10, 1:50, 1:100 This feature is invaluable when creating scale drawings for real life objects.Examples include the design of kitchens and room layouts in properties. As a relatively new user of Affinity Designer I was disappointed to find that there's no option to set a scale on a drawing. Affinity Designer is without doubt a great product, which I will happily continue to use. The additional of scaling capabilities would open even more opportunities for users like myself. Keep up the great work ! Can't wait for Affinity Publisher to be released ...
  8. Hello, I created a background with a gradient in Affinity Photo. In the doc and when exported, I and someone on a separate computer I shared the image to can also see the banding on the image. I tried: exporting as a JPEG, PNG, PNG-8, and converting the file format to RGB/16 and RGB/32 (HDR). RGB/16 seemed to smooth the image more but there were still bands in the image. I also tried remaking the background in RGB/32 but the background did not turn out. The image is 1920 x 1080 300 DPI How can I remove the bands or export the image without the bands?
  9. I have a document preset (preset — not .aftemplate file) I named "Magcloud 8in square CMYK." Color space: CMYK with the default CMYK color profile. I decided also to make a version whose color space is RGB, with the usual-and-accustomed sRGB profile. In the New Document dialog I single-click "Magcloud 8in square CMYK." In the settings panel to the right I alter only the settings I need to change (color space and color profile). These changes cause the label "Magcloud 8in square CMYK" at the upper right to change to "Custom." I click the "+" button there and a new preset named "Custom" is created. I rename "Custom" to "Magcloud 8in square RGB." I close the dialog without creating a new file — thinking that closing it might be required for the new settings to "take" fully. Then I select File > New, select "Magcloud 8in square RGB", and click Create. When I view the new file's Spread Setup dialog, the Page Preset value is not "Magcloud 8in square RGB" as expected. Instead, it is "Magcloud 8in square CMYK." The document has the correct color-space and color-profile settings — but the wrong "based on preset" name. I can certainly select the correct preset name in the Spread Setup drop-down menu, but why should that be necessary? What procedure do I need to change to make the new document's info conform to the preset I first selected and not the one I didn't select? (Possible bug, or a feature I don't understand yet?)
  10. Hi - new user here! I'm doing an ad for a local paper. I have set my document for the correct dimensions required by the paper's spec - 133x90mm - but when I export as a tiff I get a file that is way larger than what they want - it comes out as a tiff 1571 x 1063 pixels. Which I reckon is the correct proportions but they say is way too big - and it ceryainly is when I look at it Actuakl Size on my screen. I'm working at 300 dpi - might that be the problem? Any clues much appreciated. Cheers.
  11. I have already noticed the problem with version 1.8.0x and communicated that the document size could not be changed afterwards, unless you change the DPI value minimally and the desired length and width (dimensions) of the document is changed!
  12. I'm new to Affinity Publisher. I'm building a Z-fold brochure and want the cover to properly align with the other panels. How do you increase the size of the front cover and adjust printing marks of a z-fold? I'd also be interested in learning how to adjust page dimensions for multi-page booklets where the cover, initial and last pages have to be bigger than the central pages.
  13. Affinity Publisher 1.7.3 on Mac OS 10.14.6 crashes, when changing document layout from facing pages to single. I have two master pages, A and B -> B is using A as master. Document has one page, with content, also outside document area. Publisher crashes everytime ticking Facing pages.
  14. Hi, When I create a 'web' type document in document setup and click 'ok' I always get a 'print' type document.
  15. Hey there, I'm trying to create custom presets for certain size documents/images I need to make again and again to save setup time. This is what's happening: 1) Create New document, panel opens, choose Presets and choose Create preset. 2) Name preset 3) Change size and settings how I want them 4) Click Ok to save it (when I do this the document panel flashes once and for a second I notice the preset name changes back to "Custom" and then the panel goes away) 5) Once the blank document appears I click "Document Setup" to check that the settings are correct it shows "Print" as the type and "Custom" as the page preset. When I change this to "Presets" as the type and choose my named preset as the page preset, as it should show, it changes the document settings back to what they were when the New Document panel opened. It seems like as soon as you name the custom preset it saves whatever settings are already populated in the panel from the last document that was opened. I figured out that I need to change my settings first then make a custom preset and name it for the settings to stick. The way you have the panel laid out it makes sense to work from top to bottom and clicking ok to would save all these changes. Is this a bug? The second thing is why doesn't the document setup show the Named preset that I created? It always defaults to "Print" as the type and "Custom" as the preset. Please let me know if I'm missing something or if this is a bug!
  16. I'm getting to grips with Publisher, and find I've a few queries related to my needs. I'm setting up a document to use as a template for a range of future documents which will have master pages in common. These documents will include text, svg chart images and photos, and will be saved as pdf to be made available as a download. The resulting files need to be suitable to both view on a screen and also printed using whatever printer the user has available. I'm aware that if I was setting up a document to be used in a particular way, then I would choose settings accordingly when setting up a new document. In Document Setup, I need to know whether to opt for web or print settings, and which is the best colour format to use for a document which users will be screen viewing and/or printing. Also, in an existing document, is it possible to change the setting from print to web on a permanent basis if needed? Any suggestions would be helpful.
  17. Hi there! I would like to know if there maybe is a way to quickly toggle the transparency grid in affinity designer? I know that you can activate it by going into "document setup" > "colour" > "transparent background" In Illustrator I was used to being able to quickly toggle it on or off by using the shortcut "cmd / strg + shift + d". Is this also possible in Affinity Designer somehow? You can also find this question over on stackexchange: https://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/120564/toggle-transparency-grid-in-affinity-designer Thanks in advance! PS: I am new to the forum (and forums in general), so please let me know if I somehow have posted this wrongly in any way.
  18. Hi Its difficult for me to switch mentally from displaying pt. (the usual unit of font size) to mm (the usual layout unit of page layout ) I would find it much more easy for me to have all fonts sizes always in pt. and all other measurements in mm the switch thru the prefs is clumsy I'm evidently not a grafic designer as my question may be ridiculous for the pros Clavote Ps I know that I can enter sizes in any supported units in the entry boxes
  19. It would be very helpful if I could set "Prefer Linked" as the default when creating a new document [Ctrl]N.
  20. Suggest better/more intuitive layout of Margin controls and Text Wrap controls if the Top, Bottom, Left, Right fields are placed visually in their logical positions, eg Top at top, Bottom underneath (rather than as now in two columns.......eek! which/where do I look for rapid adjustment). Even the old Quark XP single-column layout of these fields (Top, Bottom, Left, Right) is better than two columns. Small, but important, for those habitually using these controls.
  21. This is about an AD doc that I have worked on for some time and used Save As to create a daily copies. I have done this hundreds of time and each time the new copy is precisely the same as my previous doc, and the Doc Setup numbers are of course the same. Today I have done this, taken out various layers, and saved it with a new name and then deleted some layers, only to find that my Doc Setup numbers have changed. I closed AD and brought it up again with fresh files and found this had again happened. Then I took a closer look and found that the Doc Setup in my original doc was not locked. When I locked it and went through the same process, the Doc Setup docs remained the same. This leads me to believe that there is something about taking out selected layers after duplicating the doc that would allow the change if the Doc Setup were not locked. Is that true? If so, this may cause some real problems for some users, and a warning perhaps should be added when closing the Doc Setup. Thus this question.
  22. I don't know much about color formats and color profiles, so I could use some help. I have a project that I plan to get professionally printed. However, I tried printing on my home printer as well as FedEx Office and the colors are drastically different from my monitor (Dell UltraSharp U3415W PXF9 34" Curved LED-Lit Monitor). When printed, my purple looks like blue, and my light gray looks dark, etc. I have my document setup as Print-ready with CMYK/8 and all my colors have been created using the CMYK slider. This has been the case since I first started this document. So, I have a couple questions: 1. Am I doing something wrong? 2. What is a color profile? 3. How do I prevent this from happening when I get it professionally printed? (I think they want PDF, but may accept other formats) Thank you in advance! I attached a couple images of my Document Setup and CMYK Slider.
  23. Is there a way to save user document setup templates in Both Designer and Photo? Thanks
  24. Hello, I am changing my document that I've been working on from the "Press" document type at 1440px by 900px to "Press" with the unit changed to inches, with an 11in width and 8in height. Once I do the conversion though, I get a strange purple square that covers by artwork around the perimeter of the document space, even in exported files. Any idea where this coming from? Thank you for the help! -Alan
  25. Hi all, Sorry I'm about to ask a very basic question but I haven't found quite what I'm looking for in the forums or in the tutorials. I have limited knowledge of graphic design programs (just bought the new Affinity Designer work book though!). All I'm looking to do is create some template documents that can be used to create tags for a retail store. I have just been using msft Publisher in the past, but wanted to try it out with Designer. And I would prefer not to purchase an InDesign license at this time. What's the easiest/best way to separate a letter size document into segments (ie. add guides to the document showing 4 quarters). I was trying to set the margins, etc but there's gotta be an easy way to adjust the grid or margins to show on the document? Sorry for the simple question! Thanks, T
