  1. One of my tasks requires quickly regenerating a set of images (sometimes hundreds) based on a template. This is currently accomplished either with Adobe Indesign or Adobe Photoshop with Data Merge. I set up a CSV with columns which are attached to layers within the document. There are three options: 1.) Set the Text content of a Layer 2.) Set the Visibility of a Layer On/Off 3.) Set the contents of a Layer to a File Once you have the layers attached to columns and the CSV imported, you can preview each row, set the display to a specific row and export one/all images based on the data in each row. I could identify several more options that I would love to have (set the fill color of a layer) but the minimum needed would be Visibility and Text. Unfortunately, I cannot abandon the Adobe products until I have another way to accomplish this merging of data. I have not found any alternative software to accomplish this merging, so I am willing to bet there is a market for it. Inkscape has a plugin that nearly does it, but it is not implemented well and does not work with all shapes.
  2. I did not realize that Publisher was storing and exporting meta data until I duplicated a previous document to use as a starting point for my new one, and my client noticed that the title field in the exported PDF file was the title of the original document, not the new one. I can edit the title meta data within Acrobat under preferences just fine, but was hoping there was a way to do that within Publisher, so I do not have to take the extra step of re-editing the PDF metadata every time I do a new export. Is it possible to create/edit metadata within Publisher?
(Hi guys, I have a problem with the data merge. I have the excel table as shown in the picture. Now I want in column 1 the values from column 1 from the excel. This also works perfectly. But in column 2 the data merge stops. I have assigned the field "Width 1000" to column 1 and the field "Width 2000" to column 2. Do I have a thought error? I would be very happy for help.)
  4. Hi, I'm trying to build a phone directory booklet with Affinity. Let's go so far as to say that I can export the data from a spreadsheet and/or database in just about any conceivable format, I'm wondering what the right was is to pull it into Affinity Publisher using styles. Say, for instance, that each entry should look like: Smith, John 123 Main St. Blankendale, MN 88304-0014 816.929.4030 https://johnisgreat.com/fake-url-for-example-purposes Without going through every single entry manually (I have about 500 of them) and setting the style, what's the right way to do this in Affinity? I'd love to hear from Serif. In the end, I'm trying to produce a two-column staple-together booklet that I can update the bulk of the data via automation. Advice, tricks, tips, and warnings welcome.
  5. After creating a table according to the instructions given in the tutorial titled "Tables", I have trouble inserting my file from Excel. After selecting all the cells in my table, I choose "Paste without Format" as he says in the tut, but all my data ends up in a single cell and my table gets expanded way off the page. HELP!
  6. I am a newbie with Affinity and thought I would ask the group for your thoughts. I've been asked to create a marketing slick that will visualize data in a bubble format. We use Affinity for our marketing materials but I've never really touched it and am completely overwhelmed when I try to do anything in Affinity. I'm not a graphics person. I am pretty sure Word isn't going to cut but I also think Affinity might be overkill. Would you use Affinity for this type of task?
  7. It would be great if the Table Text Tool would support pasting of data (they are usually tab separated) from a spreadsheet like Google Sheets oder Microsoft Excel. At the moment this is not possible and leads to a huge amount of work to create e.g. offers. Another, more advanced feature would be to link an existing spreadsheet table or at least CSV data directly to the Table Text Tool. What do you think about it?
  8. Hy Forum I created a new Document in Publisher. Its a Booklet with 15 Pages. It has mixed content like: Text, Pictures and Tables. I saved it yesterday evening as a PDF Document and as a afpub Document. Now i want to continue with my work, but i notice that all Tables arent Tables anymore (each cell is now just a rectangles with a text). All Text are splitted in x textfields, and all tabs in my textfields are gone... Can anyone help me with this? Do i need to recreate all? Best regards Roberto
  9. I've found numerous topics on the subject of adding a mail merge feature to Publisher but couldn't see anything relating to Designer. Appreciating that Publisher might be the best place for it, I can't help thinking it would be an enormous benefit in Designer. I've been producing flyers and posters for a local film club for years. I had templates set up in Pages and each quarter I would have to place the images, change the dates, print to PDF. convert to image, crop, zoom etc. I made it as efficient as I could in that program and it took a lot of initial effort to create the starting templates, so the thought of doing it all over again put me off for a while. This weekend I finally re-did the whole thing in Designer. Symbols are used throughout for the film posters and dates and QR codes and colours. I now have an artboard called Resources that contains all the base elements and compiled symbols: Then the other artboards contain separately the portrait and landscape posters as well as the quarterly season flyer: All I have to do is modify the resources, drop new images into place and change the dates in the calendar, tick or untick the correct layer for the BBFC film rating, drop in a monochrome QR code and it's all done. I can hit one button to export all the posters and flyer and differently sized image slices for social media. What used to be in seven separate documents with a heavy post-process can now be done in literally minutes (hopefully - I'll find out next quarter). However, I would LOVE the ability to have document variables. Variables that can be used in ANY input. Obvious initial examples would be for the film titles and dates. Also applicable to product ingredient lists and allergy warnings in other layouts. The colours used for each panel could also be document variables. At the moment I've just used a pair of squares swatches that are repeated as symbols and stretched to cover the spaces in the final layouts. Being able to define the colour in the palette dialog as [%COL_A%] and the accent as [%ACC_A%] would mean I could just change those variables in the document properties and have the whole theme change. There are loads of places where I could do this rather than have to use symbols and I think it's worth your consideration.
  10. Hi, I'm using the trial version of Affinity 1.6.6, and although it loads NEF files and displays them, there is no exif data for camera and lens information transferred. All that is displayed is "NO CAMERA DATA" and the lens corrections are all set to default profile. Camera is Nikon D3300, lenses are Nikkor AF-P 18-55 mm 1:3.5-5.6 G and Nikkor AF-S 55-300 mm 1:4.5-5.6 G ED. Any ideas? Attached 1 NEF file and equivalent Affinity file and screenshots. 11. I've done some data driven images in Photoshop. I just purchased Affinity Photo and I'd love to do more elaborate data driven images. I don't know if it's available yet. Here is information on it from Adobe Photoshop: Adobe Photoshop "How To" make data driven graphics Thanks
  12. I think it must be possible, like in Indesign, to import content via XML or to update it. Better would be a direct API with which you get content in Publisher. Do you know what I mean? Especially with large catalogue publications it can't be insert content via copy and paste. That's 90's style ;)
  13. The new UX features in the 1.5 release are phenomenal, and bring Affinity Designer MUCH closer to a total solution for front end design. What I'd love to see in a future release is support for linking/importing data from external sources such as a JSON file, spreadsheet, or CSV. A great implementation of such a feature can be found in the Craft plugin for Sketch. If this were available natively in Affinity Designer, I think I'd be ready to make a full cutover to AD as my primary environment for all UX work.
  14. I have to sometimes make tables in AI with data taken from Excel, and AI does a good job of taking Excel cell data and populating it in AI, given they are in the same visual format. What I mean is if I have 2 columns of Excel data and I create a text frame with tabs then they show up correctly in AI. I tried this in AD and it didn't do it. Just curious to see if this is on anyone's radar. Seems like a long shot I know but never hurts to ask!!
