  1. Hello everyone I recently got Affinity designer after years of Illustrator. I love the program but am still getting the hang of it. Can anyone tell me how I can get the curves I want whilst using the pen tool? Just like on Illustrator, I click once with the pen to create a point. I click again to create the next point. The line path from point A to point B has a really wonky curve and is not at all what I want. This mainly happens when I'm drawing clouds or trees. I can't seem to get the perfect line and curves that I want without using the node tool to edit my lines or just using smart mode. Dragging the mouse doesn't help me to get the curves or shape I want either. Is this just the way Affinity works or is there some setting that I am unaware of? i'd really appreciate any advise here! Thanks so much :)
  2. In Draw Plus I used to be able to do some image manipulation from text converted to curves. (Unfortunately I cannot upload an example as it will not open with Affinity.) The steps were: insert image add art text above image select both and crop to shape convert to curves with node tool pull the curves around. This left a graphic which could be manipulated in such a way that curves could be pulled around. Where the outside edge of the letter was pulled across the flood colour was pulled across. If the edge was pulled over one of the other letters, the coloured area of the second letter would go white, and if you continued pulling past the letter, colour would appear again. So far, I am unable to do this with Affinity. The closest I have come is to do the above steps 1 and 2, then to Mask to below. The letters are then filled with the image below, and can be converted to curves, but the behaviour at this point does not replicate that of Draw Plus. The edges can be pulled out, but the interaction with the other letters, specifically the white where another letter is crossed, does not occur. I've tried Please can anyone help? I use this design tool a lot in graphics. Many thanks. Jerry
  3. In the attached screenshot I am trying to merge the red box and the blue line. My purpose is so that I can then select and move one of the side nodes and have all three protruding lines stay connected to it. Using the join curves button doesn't seem to accomplish this and using the combine function removes the blue line entirely. In Illustrator creating a new path off of another one automatically merges them – in Designer it creates a new curve on top, which is keeping me from making the shape I need :( Is there a way to combine these curves the way I described? Thanks!
  4. Hello, and thank you for Affinity Photo; the world needs more alternatives to you-know-what and Affinity has some great features. Some observations about plugins, some may have been mentioned before. The plugin image preview is not color managed, making it difficult to adjust color. Dropdowns on the plugin UI (with FilterMeister plugins anyway) only show two menu items; the arrow keys must be used to scroll down. I do not see a progress bar after the filter is displayed. And I have had two crashes so far on opening plugins, which previously opened. Here are some plugins to work with at http://www.russellcottrell.com/photo/RCFilters.htm The curves dialog needs to show the input and output values for the selected point. This is especially important for the center point of Lab’s a and b curves. Also, could HSB/HSL mode be added? Congratulations on the HDR merge feature; the .exr output file is the highest quality that I have seen, much better than that of the well-known HDR programs. When merging .tifs (rather that raw files so the camera .dcp profile can be applied first), all other programs that I have tried produce very noisy shadows, often unusable, when opened in applications such as SNS-HDR. (Nothing against your tone-mapping per se but SNS-HDR is the best.) The Affinity .exr’s are high-quality, fully usable. But I have run into a few problems; several of the images I merged had artifacts, little vertical colored lines in the output. And the output files do not look the same when trying to merge them into a panorama with PTGui; the exposure and color balance vary, even with images identically exposed and raw processed (in RawTherapee). I don’t know if this is inevitable or not; I have not had images of this high quality to work with before. Also, could the New HDR Merge dialog save the last used settings (alignment, ghosts, noise reduction, tone map)? Lastly, being able to export files as .psb would be useful. Thank you again . . . . —Russell
  5. Hello, this lines/curves anti-aliasing thing was probably reported multiple times but I thought i make a vid on it jsut in case. Cheers! https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/22340015/Curves%20Problem.mp4
  6. Will Affinity Photo ever be able to handle curves in the way that Photoshop does? For example in PS I can add different input and output on eachof the nodes on the curve Affinity Photo doesn't seem to have this function. Neither does it seem to have any way of importing .acv curve files into AP curves. It seems odd that AP doesn't have these functions as the freely available Gimp does. If you look at the attached Screen Grab from PS each of the nodes on the curve has separate in and out values and previously saved curves can be imported and applied.
  7. Odd thing just happened (AD 1.5.1.43 Win7)... Drew a curve Made a clone Flipped it horizontally Aligned the start nodes Attempted to join them And the whole lot vanishes! I've erased the rest of the drawing leaving just the two curves, and this behaviour happens repeatedly. File attached - try selecting the top centre nodes where the curves touch and joining. If I tamper with the file in almost any way (such ad adding a new object to the canvas) then the curves join correctly. What is going on? Have just loaded the file into 1.5.0.36 Retail and the behaviour is different... here the curves remain, but do not join. The Vanishing.afdesign
  8. Hi, Imagine the following scenario shown in this screenshot: Basically, I have 3 separate curves that make up the following grid: OOOOOOOO X------- XBBBBBBB I want to join O and X by "uniting" them (i.e. selecting them both and clicking on the "Addition" icon in the toolbar). What I expect is to get a reverse L shape consisting of 6 anchors, i.e.: MMMMMMMM M------- MBBBBBBB However, what I get is the following: There is this stray anchor (inside the red circle) that somehow breaks this merged shape. If I remove it, it looks like this: I'm never able to join those 2 curves into one. I tried selecting anchors of both curves and clicking on "Close curve"/"Connect curve" (inside the Action bar), but they don't seem to have an effect. I'm sure I misunderstand how curves and anchors work together, if you could help me here and point me towards some resources to better understand them, that would be greatly appreciated! EDIT I just noticed that at the encircled section, there are actually 2 anchors on top of each other (I just deleted them both when I selected them by dragging a selection rectangle around them). If I move one anchor away, I get this: What would be the proper way to merge this two curves?
  9. When using a curve masked to a specific area to adjust the brightness values of skin tones this causes the saturation values to increase, so it is necessary clip a HSL desaturation adjustment to it to bring the values back in line. I have tried every combination of clipping and masking these two adjustment layers together with no success. In PS this is the core of beauty photography retouching. Passing the adjustment down through clipping is a standard behavior of adjustment layers clipped to another adjustment layer with mask. Here are screenshots with all the attempts in the layer tabs as well as the Ps example. If there is a workaround please let me know. Thanks Kyle
  10. Hi there, Question: in my workflow, I usually tweak masks by using curves or levels. The curve then becomes a sort of expand-contract for the black-white values, which is pretty helpful for quick tweaks. Is there a way to do the same in AP? If I have a mask, say with a feathered circle, and I create a curve, AP creates a new curve adjustment. At first, I thought I could simply move the curve adjustment as a mask children, but it seems it doesn't affect the mask. Now I'm not even sure if this worked in the initial release and perhaps is broken in the current one (1.5.0.39) Any thought? Best, Andrew
  11. Adjusting a curve with 4 points caused the crash with message: Problem signature: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: Photo.exe Application Version: 1.5.0.39 Application Timestamp: 58355ba5 Fault Module Name: dbghelp.dll Fault Module Version: 6.1.7601.17514 Fault Module Timestamp: 4ce7c5ac Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Offset: 00000000000320dd OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.48 Locale ID: 1033 Additional Information 1: 3b78 Additional Information 2: 3b785dc2d643da21bc1dc06afc734a87 Additional Information 3: 6858 Additional Information 4: 6858e45cf756ad36b08347cc3f24b0c3 I may have taken the point to the edge (or outside?) the curve box when this happened.
  12. In Affinity Photo, it would be nice to have numerical input for Curves control points, allowing more precise values.
  13. Hi, I am another user interested in Affinity Photo as an alternative to Photoshop. I have been familiarizing and playing with it after installing the beta version for Windows on my computer. Overall it is OK. It is somewhat different from Photoshop and this will require me to go through some learning, all of which is fair and expected. A part from bugs that need fixing, I think there is space for better implementation of some functions some of which are being reported in this forum. I am adding one myself for the Curves function (under Tones in the Develop Persona). Unless I am missing something, in its current implementation the curves function of Affinity allows to place and move points in the curve but does not show the values of the input and output coordinates of the points. This makes very difficult (in fact, almost impossible) to exactly reproduce a similar curve profile on different photos. Photoshop not only shows the input and output values of each selected point of a curve, but also allows to directly enter such values in the corresponding fields without having to drag each point. Also, similar to Photoshop, I think that showing a curve and its corresponding hystogram overlapped in the same graph helps to much better evaluate the effect of modifying a curve. I hope this and other practical improvements will be implemented in Affinity to make its current and already quite impressive set of features even stronger. Regards, Marco Debiasi
  14. Hi. I've been experimenting with the latest (.26) Affinity Designer RC the past few days and have a recurring issue where AD crashes while I am drawing complex curves with the pen. It seems to usually happen after I've drawn and copied a curve several times, and then try to draw another one connected to those. Situations like in the image below. I didn't notice this happening on the previous RC but I also didn't use it nearly as much as this one. I'm using: Win 10 64 bit core i5-4690S with integrated intel GPU 16 gb ram ssd Love the program, can't wait for the final release!
  15. Hello, I drew a pair of spectacles with the curve tool. I started with the outline of the frame, then i drew each of the lenses. Now I want to fill it with colour, so that only the frame is coloured while the lenses stay transparent - like glasses are. But instead of only the frame the whole space is filled, including the lenses. I tried several approaches, but no one did work. How can I do it right? I'm new in AD. Maybe the solution is super easy, but in the moment in can't see it. File is attached Thank you. Brille.afdesign
  16. Hi, I'm currently testing out the Windows Beta coming from Inkscape (and Illustrator at the office) and what I'm missing a bit are the handlers for sharp control points. Inkscape does it brilliantly and it really makes it much easier to control a curve. Would love to see this kind of feature in AD. That's how it looks like in action: http://i.imgur.com/5iIRXG8.png
  17. I tried applying a mask to a grouped curve and received Code: 0xC0000005 :(
  18. Hi, I wanted to save a Curve preset, so a clicked on "add preset" in the curve adjustment layer, but after that I lost track of it. I cannot find a way to recall that preset nor a way to manage/delete them... where should I look for it? The help tool is not helping...
  19. Hey guys, I need to connect two elements I busted open on the node level. In Illustrator I would just use the pen tool click on the open nodes and make a line to the other node connecting it instantly. For some reason its not that simple here in AD. I must be doing something wrong. Can I get a quick rundown on how the action panel works in conjunction with the snap panel. I tried looking at the Affinity videos and found nada. I also did a search and came across a thread that seemed to address this issue but it was way too gnarly in jargon and confusing. Below is a screen shot of the two elements I wanna connect. Thanks.
  20. I know I've suggested a similar feature, but all this talk of smoothing curves brought this up in my mind; in addition to a tool to smooth a curve, Affinity Designer should also have the opposite. I am of course referring to Midpoint Displacement, which would allow illustrators to make non-uniform curves more easily than having to draw each node individually. Being able to smooth curves is indeed important, but as it is, it's really hard to produce a line that doesn't look uniform, and a roughening tool to add pseudorandom midpoint displacement would make illustrating much less time-consuming.
  21. It's been a while since I've seriously used a product like Affinity Designer. The last one was Corel Draw about 20 years ago. One of the things it could do (if I remember correctly) was to convert an image (JPG etc.) to curves. That allowed someone like myself, with negligible artistic ability, to have a sound base from which to start producing a finished item. AD does have the ability to convert to curves but it does not appear to work on images. Is that something that will be added if it isn't already possible to do so? Or if images can be converted to curves already, how is it done?
  22. I switched to Affinity Designer from CorelDraw and I'm loving so much about it! There is one thing I can't seem to do though that I found very useful on CorelDraw. When working with curves the three modes are Sharp, Smooth, and Smart. I can't seem to find a way to have a curve exiting one side of a node, and a straight line exiting the other. I find I have to make really tiny curves to try to approximate a straight line. Am I missing something? Is it possible to do this with Designer? Thanks!
  23. Version 1.5.0.6, I was exporting some pretty text to SVG, checked the thing telling it to export the text as curves, but no, it exported it as text. I had to go back, turn the text into curves inside the editing window and then export it to SVG.
  24. Hello, everyone!!! I has encountered with small problem while working with curves. I need to convert a knot of curve partly with 'sharp' and 'smart'. I meant from one side of the knot I could create round shape and from another side it should be sharp. Photoshop has this option. I would be happy if somebody can explain can I do it or not. If yes, then how to do it? Thank you very much in advance :) PS: Affinity is very cool app. Wish big luck for the Affinity-team to make this tool as one the best :)
  25. Hi, First of all I'd like to thank you for the really great software. I am currently using Affinity Designer for UI projects / icons and it improved my skills undoubtly. I could write an essay about how you made my designer life better (and I am sure that many others said it before) so I will go straight to the point: 1. Expand stroke I am making some vector graphic and I am using pressure panel to make the stroke look more handwritten and after that I was using expand stroke command and it goes pretty well with simple curves, but with more complex ones it gives me wrongly converted objects is there any solution for this? Maybe, am I doing something wrong? 2. Flatten transparency Are there some tools for print preparation as flatten transparency tool which would make me sure that in print everything would look good? Every advice would be helpful :)
