  1. Windows 10 Affinity Publisher 1.10.4.1198 Tried many settings combinations but the JPG compression doesnt have any effect on filesize.
  2. Hi, I have been having some issues with file size when exporting to PDF from Publisher. Although similar issues have been raised on the forum before, I haven't been able to find a solution. I am working on a 30 page document but I have replicated the problem in a simpler file. This is a one page layout (1920x1080px) with one image, some text and a couple of shapes which I have created in both Affinity Publisher and InDesign. PDF export and compression settings have been kept the same using a raster DPI of 250: Affinity Publisher PDF export: 3.18MB InDesign PDF export: 1.15MB In such a simple example the file size produced by APub is almost 3x larger! Experimenting with different amounts of compression produces similar outcomes with considerably bigger PDF sizes compared to InDesign's results. This is quite an issue for portfolios as they are often sent by email... I have attached my test files. adobe_pdf_export_test.indd adobe_pdf_export_test.pdf affinity_pdf_export_test.afpub affinity_pdf_export_test.pdf
  3. In making a book of photographs to be printed by a print-on-demand company, I found I'd exceeded their 300 MB per PDF limit even before I had all image files placed in the Publisher document. The idea of further JPEG compression was not appealing but I decided (holding my nose the entire time) to try compression settings during export to PDF. The results surprised me. No compression: 388.5 MB No compression (2nd time around): 363.4 MB (why the difference?) Compression setting 100: 211 MB Compression setting 99: 182.7 MB Compression setting 97: 139 MB Compression setting 95: 114 MB Compression setting 90: 83 MB I take it this means that the max quality setting (100) still involves re-compression of the images. All along I'd thought 100 means: no compression. Apparently not. So if output file sizes are plaguing you, perhaps the slight JPEG compression will be helpful. Before starting the tests I ran the original JPEGs through the compression program JPEG-Mini. It made a whopping difference in the files' sizes and without noticeable loss of quality. But using the JPEGs compressed with JPEG-Mini as source files within the Publisher document doesn't seem to have provided a lot of savings during export to PDF. Perhaps JPEG-Mini's major advantage is a "web thing" and not a "print thing".
  4. Hello there, I am searching for a solution for the performance issue when I'm working with bigger vectorgraphics. My System is stable and doesn't provide any bottlenecks. CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700X Eight-Core Processor, 3394 MHz RAM: 16GB DDR4 GPU: AMD Radeon R9 200 Series (4095 MB) This is while working with really large vectorfiles: Affinity (big vector) just opened. ...while zooming in and out very fast. My Problem is now, that I don't know how to merge those files - they are so detailed like I never would need them. But I want them to stay vectorfiles to change their size afterwards like I need them. While working with such files, the performance is very bad, I can't copy and paste anything on realtime, or change anything without big lags (adding a new line of words - 15-30 sec). Does anybody know, how I can change those files, lower the details without changing vector to pixelgraphic? What I have tried: 1. Saving them to compressed .svg => not the best idea (poor details) 2. Merging them with boolean operators (this changes pixels to the same color) => useless Thanks mates. Have a great day! Best regards Chris
  5. Publisher ver. 1.7.0.257. Whatever value I set in "allow JPEG compression" quality the size of exported pdf file is the same, and the quality of pictures are the same. As the size of exported document is pretty much the same as the publisher document I assume that there is no compression during export at all.
  6. Hello everyone I am trying the Affinity Photo and Designer with the intention of buying it if they convince me. But I have seen that they have a big problem (For me). The quality of compression and size, is very bad. This is bad if I want to make a Web with images that weigh little but that look good. This image that I put, are the tests I have done to these 3 programs. Adobe Photoshop, Luminar2018 and Affinity Photo. All photos have been compressed in the same way: JPG and 10% quality (Low Quality) As you can see, the best quality is PhotoShop and the worst Affinity. The one that is very well size / quality is that of Luminar20018. I also attach the original image of the test so you can try if you want Am I wrong for Affinity to compress the photo so badly? Or is your compression engine that is very bad? Greetings and thank you
  7. Hi, I am a bit surprised that Affinity Phone native format is a lot larger than RAW files (x10!). It would be great if a good lossless compression could be included to save some disc space...
  8. Dear all, I would like to compress my massive amount of JPGs in order to save some space and when I just opened up a picture in order to try out the amount of compression that would not yet show too much in the quality the following thing surprised me: The original JPG is about 4.4 MB big. If I go straight to "Export" (really don't do anything in between) and want to export it at 100% it is suddenly 9.43 MB when using Affinity Photo. When using Photo Plus X8 the "new" picture is about 8.0 MB. So it more than doubles in size just by opening in a programme and exporting it in the original format, the original resolution and at the original quality? Is it correct to assume that this is somehow because of the Resampling Method? Kind of like: I didn't do anything but the programme actually did quite a lot? And if I cannot export without resampling: Can anyone recommend a combination of Resampling Method and quality level that one the one hand don't lover the perceived quality too much but on the other hand put a good dent in the file size? Thank you very much in advance, Dreamer
  9. Hello, is ist possible that you intergrate the option for non compressed TIFF files. I would appreciate this. thanks michael
  10. Hello Just wondering if anyone knows of a way to turn off the compression when exporting a JPEG file? If this is even possible... I'm currently trying to upload my book cover to certain websites and even though when I look at the photo in preview it looks great, but when I upload it the thumbnails look awful (pixelated to the max). I've contacted support on these websites and they're advice so far is to up the DPI (which is currently at a 72) and turn off the LZW Compression. Anyone know how to do that? Thanks for the help ! Adam
  11. My customer demands an uncompressed TIFF file. What do I do? It's not for me to discuss with the customer if uncompressed TIFF files makes sense or not - if the customer wants it I'll have to deliver it! What do I do? Does AP force me to load the compressed TIFF to PS and save it as uncompressed TIFF file from there? Cheers, Timo
  12. I would love to see an option when saving JPG, PNG and GIF files to losslessly compress them and remove unnecessary junk in order to achieve minimal file size :) ... Something like ImageOptim does (with tools like PNGCrush, MozJPEG, Zopfli, AdvPNG, Jpegoptim, Gifsicle, SVGO and PNGOUT). And bonus: Images that are used as Resources in Affinity Photo and Designer can be losslessly minified as well (in affinity photo there was saving 10MB from 51MB = 20% on my test run)
  13. It would be very useful to be able to see the images as they will be saved when adjusting the settings in the export dialog box. So for example if we select JPG and lower the quality to 25% you would see the image update to show the compression artifacts. I find that many times it is important to lower quality setting as much as possible but without losing quality to specific areas and it's hard to really know where to set these setting if we cannot see a real time view of the export settings. There could be a toggle switch to turn the preview on or off. This could also apply to any pixel dimension changes and other compression / export settings but even just showing the JPG compression would be nice. Cheers!

  15. At the beginning I just want to say that it seems that everyone want to have photoshop but under the name Affinity Photo :) So... In Photoshop we can choose if we want TIFF with lossy jpeg compression or lossless ZIP or LZW. In Affinity Photo dialogue window there is no such thing. There resampler that suggest that AP compression algorithm is lossy. Can you tell me if it is lossy or lossless? Does it matter which resampler option I choose? What are the differences between them? p.s. Sorry for my English
  16. When I save as TIF, lanczos 3 (non separable), the resulting file is blank, or black, or filled with static. This is the file compression recommended in your tutorials (excellent, btw). Other filetypes, jpg, png are viewable with that compression algorithm. The resulting file is the same size as that calculated in the export pane. No Mac app I have can open, including graphic converter. Is this issue repeatable by members of this forum, or is it some anomaly related to my system?
  17. The attached PNG when exported from Affinity Designer was 296 KB (303,788 bytes). The same image after opening and resaving from FastStone Capture is only 205 KB (210,820 bytes)
  18. Hello. I love Affinity Photo. I was happy to move from Adobe PhotoShop to Affinity Photo when I first discovered it. That said, there are a number of features that were very useful to me in Adobe PhotoShop that appear to be missing from AP. If some of the following features are in fact missing, is somebody able to tell me when/if they will be included? Full-screen preview shortcut Preview the whole document in full-screen without the borders of the UI with a shortcut command. Just the one shortcut command - not a series of shortcuts. Also, I don't wish to use the 'toggle full screen' option as the transition needs to be instantaneous. Compare to the original photo (prior to modification) shortcut Sometimes it is very useful to see how far you've come - to check how the original looked, with one shortcut. On/off preview button when making adjustments/adding filters Currently, mirror view and split view exist as ways to compare the modification to the original. But why not a simple on/off button? I would prefer that to the existing options. Export image preview quality During the export stage as you are deciding how to compress your image, it would be beneficial to have a preview showing what the image will look like under those compression settings. It would better allow to manage how to export an image in reduced file size but maintain good quality. Edit image EXIF data When uploading an image to the Internet, I want to first be able to strip private information such as GPS coordinates. Apart from what, I would to append additional information to an image in the EXIF information. Merge colour tones from another image. I remember PhotoShop had a feature that allowed you to adjust the colour of an image based upon the palette of another image. This was very useful if you had one image where the colours were all wrong in a collection where the colours were fine. So you could tell the editor to take the yellow from the better image and tell the worse photo "that's what yellow is meant to look like", and it would correct the whole photo based upon that adjustment. Merge exposure from another image Same principal as above. You tell the editor that you want the exposure levels of one image to translate to another image.
  19. Hello, it would be great, if Affinity Photo/Designer would implement PNG compression. There are several tools on the market (online and offline), which do the job pretty effectively (in most cases the file size is decreased by almost 70 %). Or is the compressed format named PNG-8? If yes, it works nicely with small PNG files, but it does not work for large files. It does not crash the program, it just does not produce an output. However, the large files can nicely be compressed with many other tools. Best, Chris
  20. Yes, I've noted the following line in the Feature Roadmap for Affinity Photo: -Export persona - preview with compression and palette optimisation But since we don't know exactly what you are working on, I'd like to offer some guidance: 1) Please use Photoshop's "Save for Web" as a feature guide. I use just about every single feature there when optimizing graphics for the web. Transparency, Number of Colors, Interlaced, Various Dithers, Multiple Color palettes (Adaptive, Selective, Perceptual), Web Snap, and Lossy (for GIF) are all very serious features. 2) Please use a Quantizer for PNG optimization: http://pngnq.sourceforge.net I use TinyPNG all the time to convert my 24-bit PNGs with Transparency into super tiny PNG-8's! https://tinypng.com Build something like that into Affinity Photo and you've truly one-upped Photoshop! 3) Consider hiding or graying-out the "Resample" popup in the File>Export sheet whenever the dimensions are LOCKED. When UNLOCKED and the user changes the dimensions, only they would you need to resample. But when the dimensions are locked, no resampling is needed and so that resample popup only serves to confuse the user. 4) If you want to add a compression preview in File>Export it may be best to put that as a checkbox option, unchecked by default to ensure maximum performance. Thanks.
  21. Hey lovely Serif, Would it be possible to integrate a smarter export option for PNG's that are sliced or otherwise exported. The default export produces some pretty hefty PNG file sizes, and at the moment I'm running them through TinyPNG.com after export. Savings are significant. Typically around 60-75% smaller files. So 200kb retina images are being going down to 50kb with no visibly discernible differences (Although optimisation has taken place) (Examples attached). So there is some loss going on, but it is nothing like the sort we used to see with JPEG compression. I know gulp.js also has the option to integrate a similar compression into its workflow, but either way, I'd like to think that there would be a tick box in the export settings to enable this sort of file size crushing by default from the Affinity apps. Thanks for your time. Stephen
