  1. "On the Edge" Just having some fun with Affinity Photo. 🤪
  2. Hello, I really like this software. ;) :) I'm a 3D artist and I need to know if it is possible to load a black and white picture (the z-depth channel created in the 3d software) and load it into a channel or a slection or something else in order to create a depth of field. Like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEntwpYYKHE
  3. output-stack-DeNoiseAI-standard-affinity-extended.tiffoutput-stack-DeNoiseAI-standard-affinity-extended.tiffHi, I'm trying to create a composite Milky Way landscape photo. I've done it before with other landscapes. I can't seem to do it with this landscape because of the trees. I'm unable to cleanly separate the landscape from the sky so I can then replace the sky with the Milky Way. Please let me know how I can make successfully combine these two photos.
  4. I had a sudden inspiration to create some critters from mythology. I intended to start with a faun/satyr, but I couldn't find a photo of a goat's hind legs in the right pose, so I went for a centaur instead. Source photos from Pexel. Source images ... And the layers ... For the horse's right shoulder I copied the horse layer and flipped it -- that's the turned-off layer -- and used the clone stamp to copy the rump. I made a rectangle with the chestnut colour of the horse and a gradient of 100% to zero to make the colour change between the horse and the man look seamless and more natural. I blurred and dulled down the background image to make the centaur stand out better. And now I suppose I'm just going to have to go out and take my own photograph of a goat standing on its back legs!
  5. Hi Folks! Would it be possible to get a divide blending mode? It gets used a tonne in vfx compositing where we want to separate different parts of an image so we can tweak things individually! Thanks! John
  6. 369/5000 I don't know if this option is currently under development, but in my opinion it would be very useful to have a node-based editor as an option to the layer system (Have both options). Because I work with 32 bit exr files to be able to generate multipass compositing and it would be very useful to speed up the workflow without having to copy the same information to other layers. Thank you.
  7. Howdy creatives ! I just uploaded a new photo manipulation tutorial. This time we're gonna handplant a skyscraper (the EASY way). It's a really easy photo manipulation tutorial, read description if you want to follow along. Have fun and a great weekend ! https://youtu.be/N-i-WmixD0g
  8. Hey creative people ! A bit over a week ago I uploaded my first beginner tutorial on how to create a composition in AP. (I will post my second tutorial in a separate Topic) Since the goal for my YT channel is to help everybody struggling with photo compositing/manipulation, it would be awesome if you could answer this one question: What are your pain points regarding photo manipulation/compositing? Thanks in advance for sharing, so I know where to put my focus ! Alright, now enjoy the tutorial P.S. I bought a nice mic already so sound will be better in future tutorials. However, if you have any other tips/tricks on how I could improve my tutorials, feel free to let me know! Cheers and I hope you learn something new today ! Rens
  9. Hey creative people! I decided it was time to upload my third Affinity Photo Manipulation tutorial on Youtube. This time I'll show you exactly how I created this giant raccoon photo manipulation with just 2 images and some cloud paint brushes. Since it's Black Friday I decided to be super generous and gift my IAMRENSI Cloud Brush pack (10 brushes!) to you for completely FREE You can find the link in the description of the video and will be available FOR LIMITED TIME ONLY. (Available until 5 December — Not sure when and if I'll put them available ever again..!) I hope you enjoy the tutorial, and if you're into photo manipulation, make sure to grab the brush pack as long as it's still available! Your welcome!
  10. Hey CREATIVES ! Let's take you on the journey of how I transformed this normal fox image into something awesome. If you want to follow along with the tutorial, you can find the stocks I've used in the video description on YouTube. BUT FIRST: What are your pain points regarding photo compositing/manipulation? It would be very useful for me to know, so I know where to put my focus on to serve you better. I'm planning on making more tutorials and a complete course on this. Alright, here's the tutorial. I hope you learn something new! Cheers and stay creative ! Rens
  11. I would like to learn digital compositing (in general, but with Photo specifically) and have found a book https://www.amazon.co.uk/Art-Science-Digital-Compositing-Techniques/dp/0123706386/ which seems to be highly recommended (9 reviews, all 5 stars) but I’m concerned that it might not be what I need. I’m looking for a book that will take me through things like: * How to “read” an image and understand how it was taken/produced and under which circumstances; * How to better understand how an image is coloured and what I can do with it (and what I probably can’t); * How to manipulate images so they go better together; * What I need to understand and modify in an image before I start to integrate it with others; * How to better understand the pros and cons of different techniques and when they should/shouldn’t be used. I realise the above things are fairly ‘wishy-washy’ as requirements but I don’t really know what I need to learn. There are plenty of articles and videos on the web about “how to do this” and “here’s a great trick” etc. but they are normally very specific to a certain image/result and I would like to learn the basics in general first – in a progressive manner building up my knowledge, rather than flitting here and there learning disparate techniques – before moving to more complex projects. At the end of the day I would like to be able to look at an image and be able to say things like: “Okay, I’ll need to do this before I can use it”; or “Ah, they’ve done this with the image so I need to do this other thing”; or “Shame, I won’t be able to use that image because of so-and-so”. Has anyone read this book and, if so, do you think it will be useful to me, and, would you recommend it for use with Affinity Photo?
  12. Hello forum and dear Affinity Team ;) Congratulations to your great software, I realy love it and it's the first time I didn't touched Photoshop and Illustrator since 1 month. And...I'm looking forward to never touch it again :P So here's my question: Is there any chance that I can leave After Effects untouched in the near future? Your software is very great, fast and reliable. Would be so great to put all this experience in a replacement for After Effects written by Serif. Thank you Pete
  13. Twenty years ago it was suggested I learn Photoshop to make myself employable at the local community college. Well, I didn't and went on to other things. Now I'm learning Affinity Photo and I have to say I love the Affinity Photo Workbook. I find it's clearly designed, and the exercises are easy to follow. I've always found that I learn best by doing. The Help section is great, but having someone guide me along is very helpful. I'm early into the Workbook, learning about Selections. The first image shows you the photos I started with, the second is the composite made by Selections and saving with Transparent Background. I used a slight Glow effect around the dog to separate her from the cat, sampling the cat for the colour of the glow.
  14. Hello, guys! Affinity's gotten me under it's spell. I've been using Affinity Photo/Design a lot in my 10-days trial to see if I can do everything I used to on Photoshop with ease. I'm loving it. Most things have even an easier workaround. So, masking is one of the cool different approaches I've encountered, and it's pretty simple to get along with. However, I couldn't—by any means—make the following mask/compositing technique work. Am I missing something or just trying to explore beyond AP actual limits? Can anyone help me? Following are step-by-step of how I do it on PS and, then, how it didn't work on AP. Post-image: I forgot to write on the 3rd image, but, while inside the mask, I pasted it.
  15. Hi, I am starting to do some compositing in Affinity, and have noticed on some YouTube videos that users at the start, set up a new document. They then load their photos onto this document and work on them there. Why set up a new document? Are there some advantages? thanks for reading, cheers Geoffrey
  16. Hi all, here are some of my work for Bulgarian Libertarian Society https://goo.gl/CNq74y all done with Affinity Photo and Designer. Images in colages are from pixabay.com.
  17. Please forgive me for not really knowing how to properly ask about this... I have a photograph that I want to break up into 3 different layers; something like background, near foreground, and deep foreground. I want to separate them so that I can independently adjust effects on the different layers, and so that I can insert additional elements in between the layers. I know that the Selection Brush is great for chunking off the bits that I want in each layer. I started banging away with the Selection Brush and a Mask, but it quickly got unruly trying to tweak the Masks across 3 different layers. I'm fantasizing about some way to do something like having a single mask with multiple colors, where each color is the mask for a different layer... Or something like that. Just some way to manage the boundaries in a single place, rather than across 3 different masks as I was originally starting to do. Is my question making sense? I searched around for "compositing" and "layer separation" and "background removal" and "rotoscoping", but nothing seemed to address the problem I'm having. There's a good chance I'm just not asking the right questions here. Is there a trick to this? My naive approach has me managing 3 different masks, and trying to keep them all in sync when I want to adjust a boundary seems like a daunting task. I feel like there must be a better way. I don't need a step-by-step tutorial, I'm just hoping that someone could get me pointed in the right direction. Thanks for any guidance.
  18. Hey again, it's been ages since I actually shared some of my work in this forum. Over the course of getting imagery for the tutorials, I've also produced some final pieces that I'm happy with. Recently I've been tackling tutorials for astrophotography/star image editing as well as light painting, so there have been a few late nights! My favourite so far is a light painting composite near my home: Rail Tracks by James Ritson, on Flickr Then a light painting of Rufford Abbey (although I think I narrowly avoided a run-in with security): Rufford Abbey by James Ritson, on Flickr Followed by another light painting composite underneath an old railway bridge. This one's a little scrappy and I'm not sure how I feel about it at the moment: Under The Bridge 01 by James Ritson, on Flickr Moving on, a combination of star photography and light painting at Rufford Lake: Rufford Lake 01 by James Ritson, on Flickr And then a shot of the night sky, which was achieved by stacking 50 images (shot at ISO 6400, 1s long each) and pushing the tones quite severely to produce a vibrant result: Still Sky 01 by James Ritson, on Flickr That's about it for now - some of the above imagery is used in the recent tutorials and I plan to hopefully produce some more videos in the future covering these areas of photography. There are a few more images on my 500px and Flickr accounts as well if you're interested! Thanks, James
  19. After only few hours setting my hands in Affinity Photo , i can say '' The U.I is really friendly user'' .I love this software! Done in just few minutes!
  20. Ok, Last one. I got to get some sleep! I gotta say though Affinity Photo is equally as much fun and addicting as Affinity Designer! I already thinking about how to cancel my plans tomorrow evening to tinker a bit more. lol
  21. Is it possible to apply an adjustment to a layer without having the adjustment apply to the layers beneath? For instance I often create cutouts as part of my composite images and want to adjust their hue, contrast, etc., but I don't want the adjustments applied to the background below. In Photoshop this is the standard behaviour. How can I achieve this in Photo?
  22. I have just managed by means of some kind of butter fingered slip of the pen in the layers docker to create a little grey folder called a "Non Compositing Folder". I can find no reference to this anywhere. Can someone please enlighten me as to what this is and, maybe, how I managed to unknowingly create it .........
  23. A post from five days ago has scrolled down to the bottom of page 6 without a single reply so I thought I'd try again as I am completely baffled. Recently I managed by means of some kind of butter fingered slip of the pen in the Layers Palette to create a folder I have never seen before. In place of the usual triangle it had a neat little folder symbol and was labelled "Non Compositing Folder". I have absolutely no idea what I did to create it. I can find no reference to this anywhere in Help files or forums. Can someone please enlighten me as to what this is and, maybe, how I managed to unknowingly create it .........
  24. I've reated an A3 poster for a series of conferences here in my province. I've used Affinity Photo to create the montage. Here's the work and the making of.
