  1. I've found this glitch when exporting to PDF. On the left, the clipping is correct, and the container object does not have fx applied. On the right, as soon as I apply fx to the container object, the pdf is exported without clipping. I've attached the original designer file and the exported pdf for your amusement. Have a nice day. clipping error.afdesign clippping error exported.pdf
  2. I just began working with the 10 day free trial of Affinity Photo. I am a professional photographer who uses Capture One Pro – formally used Lightroom — and have been using Photoshop for the past five years. I’m very fluent in Photoshop but I’m sick of Adobe and I’m very impressed with Affinity so far after just a couple of days. This might be a somewhat ignorant question, but the way the layers are laid out, the way Affinity has them viewed, confuses me. I cannot tell a group from a clipped layer from a mask from a clipped mask, if that’s even a thing. They all look exactly alike to me, even though I know there is a certain way to do it by dragging and dropping in a certain area of the layer or underneath to the left or to the right, but it’s all very confusing — yet I do see the blue bars that change positions: just not sure what they mean exactly. But even when I start to understand where to drag and drop to do a clipping (child) or put in a group or put underneath or above another layer, once it’s done I cannot tell if that layer is actually clipped or not. In Photoshop of course there’s that crooked arrow pointing at the layer that it’s clipped too. I really wish Affinity would have each look more different, maybe with icons, etc... If anyone can explain and demonstrate, maybe in a video or screenshots, how all the above actually works, that would be great. I have attached a screenshot where I have a Group on top, and then a levels adjustment that I put in there as a blue vertical line, then I have another levels adjustment that was an automatic child layer, and then I have a masked layer at the bottom. I know the mask says mask, and the group says group, but they all look so similar I’m not sure just by looking at them, if I were not to read what it says in the text, how would I know which is which? Thank you.
  3. I know how you can place an object into another in Affinity Designer from the layers panel. Can this be done via the menu or via a keyboard shortcut upon selecting the two objects? thanks!
  4. From the screenshot and the Designer files attached, I'd like to achieve a sort of masking between a triangle and an empty circle with a large stroke: I'd like to mask the part of triangle that crosses over the circle. I managed to do it on the top drawing but only by applying a white fill in the circle. Which isn't smart, is it? I'd like to keep the transparency. So, how do I do that from the bottom drawing? tri-cir.afdesign
  5. Hi there, I can't seem to find the right combination of keywords to find what I'm looking for, I'll try and explain as best I can (I'm migrating from Photoshop, so I'll probably be here a lot, lol. I'm attempting to see if i can achieve the same results in the vector part of the program that I would normally get from using photoshop): (Draw Persona) The effect I'm looking for is like when you would clip a layer (above) to the layer below in Photoshop. What this would do; Top layer would mask itself to whatever layer was below it (IT HAS NO EFFECT ON THE BOTTOM LAYER). By doing this, I can edit the bottom layer in any way that I'd like and the 'clipping' on the top layer would automatically adjust to the shape of the layer below it. In Draw Persona, what "Mask to Below" *ACTUALLY* does is clip the bottom layer to the layer you're "clipping" and thus is not the effect I'm looking for. Additionally, When applying masks to object that have effects on them, for some reason it wants to by default mask in the effects too (i.e drop shadows and glows), if there a way to turn this off, I'm used to not having it clip or mask to effects on the layer at hand. Thank you in advance. I shall do as much research as I can, but it seems Designer is more different than I expected, so finding ways to achieve what I'm used to will be tough. See you again soon. :P
  6. I'm working through the AD Workbook, and the first example seemed a little too easy for an old hand (or do I mean know-all?) like me, so I decided to try something a little more ambitious. So I did a tiger. It wasn't bad, but I thought I could do better ... so I did another one. Here it is ... This is reduced to about 70% of the original size. In the book, Ben The Illustrator says he often works from videos rather than still photos, so I looked out one or two videos on the internet. This image is made from two stills, as the real thing didn't look exciting enough! I made vector shapes on separate layers of: the body and nearer legs; the tail; the head; the further legs; and the stripes -- the stripes I clipped to their layers so i didn't have to fiddle about with the edges. I saved that as an AD file, then as an AP file, which I then edited with some motion and radial blur to give a sense of movement. As I went along, I duplicated some of the layers and rasterised them, so I could add some shading and clip them. Finally, I made up a background from a couple of texture images, and added a shadow underneath the animal.
  7. This should be so easy but can't seem to figure it out. I am trying to use designer to create a graphic larger than a single sheet of printable sized paper. Print the graphic and tape it together for a leather cutting template. the graphic would cover 4 A4 sized sheets of paper so I setup 4 artboards sized at A4. I draw my image below to scale and I believe I should be able to "Clip" the image 4 times and drag the clipped regions up to the artboards for printing and assembly. This is at least how I believe it should work but can't seem to figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I use this software only for creating my leather templates and now my templates are getting bigger and I am stuck. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated as I have exhausted my web searching on this matter. Thanks
  8. Hello sir, I just downloaded the updated version of Affinity. I had been working on Inkscape for some logos. I've a small canvas of 256 x 256 pixels. All referenced stuff is on the page but not on printable area.. So I thought let's try this on Affinity Publisher. I opened SVG made in inkscape into Affinity Publisher. So everything out of the printable area was hidden vertically. but visible Only horizontally. May be I am using the wrong apps that Affinity is not for such stuff.. but what if I"m working on small Visiting Cards with small fixed size of canvas and a lot of content on the page. I need to put on the document for references. Secondly if i'm zoomed out enough that the whole page is visible, PAN tool doesn't work. For the both issues I've made a screen recording. Please take a look... Am i doing something wrong of it is actually a bug. Thank you. (I'm sorry for poor English) ScreenCapture_9-30-2018 2.16.47 AM.wmv
  9. Hi everybody, I just stumbled upon this and I cannot understand what this is and what this is for. I can't find it in the Designer help. It's this structure: I created an empty layer and moved an object on top of the layericon to crop it. I wasn't expect this to do anything, 'cause there isn't anything inside the layer to crop. But for some reason it DID add a crop/clip-layer to it. And it's giving strange results I don't get (look at the video in the attachment). Suddenly the icon of the layer changed into a folder icon and the childmask isn't masking the layer, but the layer(s?) under it. And to make it even more weird, when moving the layer underneith it this layer is making the first layer again.... strange It doesn't really make sense to me so far. This way it looks like we can mask layers underneath it, but is it really meant to work like this? Can we rely on this to be a feature, or did I perhaps hit some bug here? I am intrigued. Anybody knows how this feature is called, what's it for, when could we use this and is there some information about it somewhere in the help or elsewhere? And why did the icon change into a folder/group-icon? screenrec.mp4
  10. Hi all Affinity Photo friends, two questions: Is there something like a Clipping Mask as in Photoshop? It seems to be, that the tweaking made in Effects tab has zero effect on e.g. Masks and Adjustment Layers. In case I don't do something wrong or just couldn't figure out how to do it: This must be urgently added... Need to blur a mask non destructively all the time. If there is a possibility, please let me know, many thanks in advance. Appreciate any reply!
  11. In the develop persona I can choose to display clipping warnings (blue for shadows and red for highlights, and even colour clipping warnings). Please add those to the photo persona. Super easy change, super useful addition. Or have I missed them?
  12. Hello everybody! Greetings from Athens! I recently received some very large tiff images (product photography) with clipping paths. Subject images created in photoshop. As I am trying to work on them on my affinity photo, I cannot figure out the selections that made with photoshop. I cannot find any similar "path tab" as in photoshop. Affinity photo opens the image plain, no any further info, details, nothing! Do i miss something? if someone can assist me on this, it will be highly appreciated. The scope of editing such images is to change the background color. Thank you
  13. I have watched and re-watched the video Clipping vs Masking by James Ritson and am unable to select the mask (child layer) without the layer. Clicking one selects the other. (ditto for a clipped layer) That is not what I see happening on the video as is done at 2:07 min on YouTube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKrQ2BEFWMs This is similar to another question in the forum but the difference is that I don't want to separate the child layer from the layer, I Just want to manipulate each separately. Here is a quote from the other post by webb, "I have a pixel layer (say, Background) and have added a child filter. I would now like to move that child filter up on the stack, but can't seem to select it without selecting the pixel layer as well--both parent and child layers are highlighted and stubbornly insist on staying that way. This doesn't happen all the time, but when it does happen, I don't know what to do."
  14. How is it possible to cut out a shape from another in a non-destructive manner? I see that the "Subtract" shape in the toolbar does what I want it to do, but the result is not a compound or a mask, it becomes an edited shape. One work around I was thinking, is it possible to draw a shape with the pen tool, make it an active selection and perform an inverse selection and apply a mask to the shape?
  15. Hi guys, For example I have a green circle, that will act as a clipping container. I add 3 other object inside this green circle, with clipping. How can I change the green circle's color without unclipping the other objects? I tried, but I can't seem to be able to. Thank you
  16. Okay - I'm trying to accomplish something like this. I've got the basic shape - the colored circle in the background. I've got a black silhouette of the tree on a transparent background - here is my question: How do I burn the tree image through the circle all the way down to the dark blue background? I tried "Rasterize to Mask" but that just made everything disappear. I'm obviously not a pro graphic designer here, so please forgive my butchering of any industry terms - I'm just trying to learn how to accomplish this effect in as few steps as possible. If anyone can help I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
  17. Hey, I regularly create non-destructive compound path. I then want to use these as masks and clip other layers to them. When I drag a layer onto a compound path, the path gets included into the calculation, rather than being clipped. How can I change this behavior and use the Compound Path as a clipping mask? Thanks!
  18. Just starting to learn the program and I am feeling very stupid right out of the box. I know that this should be simple, but I have not been able to figure it out: I am working on photographs of architectural interiors. First thing I do is to adjust perspective. Easy. Then, I want to make separate exposure adjustments for the interior and for the views out the windows. No problem, I thought: simply create a mask layer that contains only the windows and adjust the exposure for this layer separately, then adjust the background to taste and layer the edited window layer on top of this. But, my window layer has an opaque background so the Background does not show through. I tried following the instructions for clipping, but I could not make this work either. I know I am missing something basic, but I have not yet figured it out. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  19. In the layers panel there should be more obvious visual distinction between a layer being in the child layer and the clipping mask position of an other layer. Please see screenshot below. It is hard to spot the difference of a slightly different indentation. Some differentiating icon before the layer icon would help.
  20. Hi, I'm quite a newbie to AD and really love it but I do encounter a few challenges along the way and wondered if you could help me? I've searched for this question but can't seem to find the answer. I am clipping this illustration in AD with fold lines onto a patterned background but I'd like to retain all the fold marks and regular drag and drop clipping seems to hide them. Any ideas on the solution? Many Thanks!
  21. Hi everyone, I am looking for the meaning of a few visual cues in the In the layers studio. What is the difference between nesting and clipping? Also the visual icons of a line through the center of your children layer versus a blue square on top of the selected layer. Please look at attached image for visual understanding. Screenshots are taking from the iPad version of affinity photo. But my question is for both the desktop and the iPad version. Thanks. Jg
  22. Greetings! I had to do a bit of study and homework in order to wrap my head around the clipping and masking operations in Designer and Photo. In the process, I developed a one-page infographic (attached), and it apparently has already helped some folks on the Affinity Designer and Photo Group in FaceBook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/AffinityDesignerPhotoPublisher/. I will be updating it shortly, but wanted share the first version here for comments and suggestions. Enjoy! Clipping vs Masking.pdf
  23. Hi! The problem is that vector object fill is always define clipping mask and affected by it. Even there is no fill color. At the same time object stroke don't define clipping mask at all and not affected by it. Here is example: Chain on the left is vector path with brush stroke with pixel "shadow" layer nested inside for clipping. Looking odd. On the right is same construction, but chain was rasterized. Please, check attached .afdesign layers to understand. I see two problems are: 1. Parent object fill is always affect the clipping mask 2. Clipping layer have nothing with parent object stroke I understand, that it's pure boolean logic happens there. But this make no sense and not what artist expected. My suggestion, that vector chain must be as his raster copy on the right. chain-clipping-mask.afdesign
  24. I'm trying to colorize a black and white using adjustment layers and masking. I'm trying to emulate the following PS tutorial in Affinity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbveFU0JL4c His method is done by creating a color balance adjustment layer and masking out an item in the photo (skin in his case.) He will then fine tune the color by creating another adjustment layer and clipping to the first layer. He'll even make several more layers with different tones all clipped to that one initial color balance layer. He'll repeat this method for all the other items in the photo. I can't seem to clip new adjustment layers together. It will just be blank when I drag it into the thumbnail. Is Affinity not able to clip multiple adjustment layers together at the moment?
  25. Hello There are things that I do not know for some of the layer operations. 1. Is paste inside of layer operation the same as clipping? What is different unless it is the same? 2. If you attach the background layer to the pixel layer under the horizontal blue line to the left in the attached file called clipping, what does the vertical blue line mean to put on the bottom right? The explanation of paste inside of help was difficult for me to understand, so please look at the attached file if you are in trouble like me. Thank you. paste inside.afphoto
