  1. At this point, I can't imagine my daily life without AD. Thank you, guys!
  2. To be honest, I've never tried Affinity Photo for digital painting. I usually work in PS or Manga Studio. But today I was testing some brush settings of Photo and came up with this quick portrait. I've always tried to emulate the traditional mediums when painting digital, so I tend to work my digital paintings with that natural a la prima feel... working in one layer and mixing pencils and 'gouache'. Here's the result: I think I'll use Photo for more digital painting. It runs pretty smooth and fluid. It is pretty fun to create brushes too, very fewer settings compared with other painting software, but at the same time those boundaries makes you create some nice brushes more quickly. Hope you all dig it!
  3. Hello there! Just wanted to share my last work with Affinity Designer. This is part of a series of about 15 characters for a web comic called "We are the Freaks". We're still in the very initial phase of the project. Hope you dig :) as always, all kind of critique would be more than welcome.
  4. Hi! My name is Enrique Figueroa, I'm a professional graphic designer. I've started to use Affinity Designer recently and I love it!. I have some expertise in character design, mascot design and such... I began to write a book about cartoon character design in Adobe Illustrator a few months ago... but it happens that I don't use Illustrator that much anymore (I hate, hate the subscription thing). So I thought that it would be a good idea to re-write the whole book for Affinity Designer only. The book is oriented towards people that would like to give life to their ideas, without the pain of going all the way trough DaVinci's academy... the learning method is very simple, for beginners and advanced users alike. The goal is to help you in the making of all kind of characters within a month or two, so you can even make money out of them (T-Shirt design, vector stock selling, freelance works, etc). Its heavy focused on styling and commercial appealing. I still don't know in which formats will be released. For now I would really, really appreciate your feedback on this project. It appeals to you?, Would you buy it?, how much would you pay for it?, is this what you need?... any opinion is welcome, my mind is open. You can ask whatever you want too. I have attached a couple of my drawings just to give you an example of the simplicity and look of the characters for this first module (these ones won't be in the book, but they can give you a small idea). I love more and more AD and I think It has great potential as a learning tool. Thanks in advance, Enrique Figueroa
  5. Hi everybody, I would like to know your sincere opinion on this RPG-like character. For some reason I feel that something's missing, I'm a little bit stuck with this one, It doesn't kill me, you know?… perhaps you could help with an extra pair of fresh eyes on this... I would really, really appreciate your comments :)
  6. Playing with some new techniques. I've been sketching directly with vectors and so far I'm happy with the results. What do you think?. Any comment is welcome :)
  7. Although this is not properly played out – I just played around with the shapes and node editing – I'd like to share this. Suggestions? Opinions? Onions, as autocorrect suggested?
  8. :) Hi! It's been more than a years since I switched to Affinity and...I couldn't be happier. I used Illustrator just 3 times in the past 8 months, and it was just to check an eps exported from Designer. This is one of my latest. Thanks to all the people involved in making my life easier.
  9. Hey everyone! This is my first post here. In less than a year, Affinity has changed my workflow in ways I couldn't even imagine some time ago. Here it is, my first project developed entirely using Designer. If you like it, feel free to check it out at Behance and show me some love :-) https://www.behance.net/gallery/31974255/Panic Thanks!
  10. My Strawberry Monkey is looking kinda dapper don't you think? Had some inspirational moments from something I saw online and I thought i'd attempt to make MSM look stylish in AD. Check out his watch. Want one... Allan
  11. Hi all! Thought I'd share a work in progress. This is one character sheet for a possible webcomic, Glorious Junk. The purple character is Sashai and the bat is still looking for a good name (suggestions welcomed!). Basically this was a test to get a good feel for using Affinity Designer. As far as testing goes, I'd call it a major win. The best thing that I finally got was that Layers are storage for curves and objects. The Layer_org.png is a screen cap of Sashai's layer structure. I made extensive use of the masking abilities that curve objects offer: the legs, arms and head all use them. All shading (except for the gold yellow arm band) is from closed filled curves with gaussian blur FX and I used the Transparency Tool a lot (way cool tool, btw). I'm not too happy with the shading on the arm with the gold band, but that's why this is a WIP. :) For the interior curves (the detail on the hands and the spirals for the knees and elbow were done by just making a curve and then selecting the curve with the Node tool and adjusting the pressure profile. It took a bit of playing around with to get a good handle on how best to use it, but once learned -- it's a really wonderful feature to add some life to curves. When the pressure sensitivity of tablets are working better (in the next beta for AD if what I've read is correct), then it should be just awesome to use in order to really fine-tune line thickness. The Move and Node tools are better than any other equivalent tool in other vector apps. Only minor gripe, is that when a node is smooth the indicator changes from a square (for corner node) to a circle. The fill color for the indicator is the color for the layer (right click on the layer's name and in the contextual menu is where layer colors can be selected). In some instances when there's a lot of nodes, the I clicked on the "wing" of the node and accidentally created a new node when I thought I was clicking on a node. If the node "wings" (the actual name escapes me at the moment) indicators could be filled with a lighter tint of the layer color it would be easier to see which is which. I like how when clicking on the handles, when the handle indicator turns red, it's aligned with the opposite handle and if I let go of the cursor then, the node is now a smooth one, if I continue moving it remains a corner node. Absolutely brilliant usability feature that took no time at all to appreciate and take advantage of! One thing that has stopped me from doing a lot of art in vector apps was the struggle between what I wanted to do and what the interface allowed me to do. In Affinity Designer it's like the interface makes it easier and quicker to do the art I want to do, in the way I want to do it. Sure there's this and that thing I wish AD could do, but for a first release version, it's the most stable (have yet to crash on me!) and easy to figure out app I've had the pleasure to use. To go all Spinal Tap, I'd give this app 6 out of 5 stars!
  12. Really love the precision of AD. Had lots of fun with this. The star is a new character for a vinyl sticker. Fascinated by the infinite zoom - everything is so crisp. Used the layer fx alot. Great to have the possibility to give different fx to different elements on ONE layer in such an intuitive way.
