  1. So I'm just trying to find an easy way to take a grayscale image and put it into one of the RGB channels of a different document. I figured out a method but it takes many steps for each channel and I'm assuming there is a much easier way that I'm missing. I was hoping that I could simply copy a grayscale image; go to a specific RGB channel and paste it into that channel but that just creates a whole new pixel layer. Any suggestions are appreciated! Cheers!
  2. In PS I can select a grayscale of the whole picture with "ctrl + left click" on the RGB Channel. (Not the seperate R,B,G channels, it's the whole RGB channel.) With this RGB channel I can create a mask with the render passes really quickly. Is there no such a channel to select?
  3. I would like you to improve presentation of the channel panel. Currently it's hard to know which channel is selected at glance, especially for spare channels. Highlight color or an icon is need for them.
  4. Hello, I think this is a bug but not 100% sure. In a nutshell, using the picker to create a curves node in a specific color channel (within the curves tool) does not place the node according to the color, but rather according to the overall luminosity. I'm using Affinity Photo 1.8.5.703 on Windows 10. I first noticed it with a photo I was editing in Lab Color mode, but I can repro with a fresh document with a simple color gradient. I've also reproduced it in RGB mode, but let me outline the steps in Lab mode: Create a new document. Convert to LAB Color mode. (I'm not sure if this matters.) Add a pixel layer, and fill it with a linear gradient going from {L=0 A=-128 B=127} on the left, to {L=100 A=127 B=-127} on the right (note the negative symbols). Add a Curves adjustment layer, and choose LAB from the first curves dropdown. Choose AOpponent from the second curves dropdown, and click Picker. Now, notice from my screenshots that if you use the Picker and drag from a point on the far right of the image, it adds a node to the curve. Note the LAB values of that pixel from the Info panel, and see that the A and B are complete opposites of each other. However, if you then do the same thing with the BOpponent selected, it adds the node to the same point in the curve. What I would expect here is that the node is added far to the right in the BOpponent curve, when the B is high for that pixel (and to the left when low).... and similarly for A. However, what appears to be happening is that it places the node based on the brightness (maybe the L value?) of the pixel, no matter what channel is selected in that second dropdown. I have attached my file so you can try yourself. Please let me know if I'm doing something wrong, or... if it's a bug, that would be great to know too! Thank you! :-) curvesGradientTest.afphoto
  5. Hello, I have just recently started getting into Affinity, and so far I'm really enjoying it! Today I wanted to try something a friend told me he does in Photoshop, but it appears (to me) to be buggy in Affinity. I have an image in Lab color mode. Create a curves adjustment layer (it shows as default the Lab "Master" channel). Switch to AOpponent channel in the curves dropdown. Click "Picker," pick a spot in the image, and drag slightly up/down to create a curve node. What I would expect here is a node on the curve corresponding to where that pixel lies on the A channel's axis.. but instead I seemingly get a node corresponding to where it is on the L axis. In other words.. If I pick a bright white cloud, I get a node way far to the right.. even though I've selected the A channel, not the L channel. And if I pick a dark pixel, no matter the color, I get a node way far to the left. If I pick a midtone pixel, I get a node near the middle. For fun, I converted my image to RGB mode and tried it with curves in RGB channels, and had the same result -- the picker picked seemingly based on pixel brightness, not channel value. I hope this makes sense. Perhaps I'm missing something and this is not a bug. :-) Thanks for reading.
  6. Hi, Channel packing method in Affinity photo is a bit hacky please make it easier to implement (i.e. copy and paste mask directly into the channel). Also, I cant seem to export a tga file with an alpha channel. I use channel packing heavily for creating RGBA masks/textures for UE4. Thanks, Iby
  7. It is well known that nodes can do everything about layers(ui). The layer cannot do some of the node's actions. Nodes are 100% compatible with layers(ui) and channels(ui). Make changes to the existing layer(ui) to make it nodey while maintaining compatibility with the original layer(ui). Adobe PS lacks even a true alpha channel(ui) because of its stale architecture. Nodeized Layer(node-ui) and channel(node-ui), affinity will have far more flexibility than PS. Adobe can never do that because of its stale architecture. This ensures an absolute lead in affinity. This node feature does not require a huge amount of new code, just changes to existing layer(ui). (I know that many(Affinity)programs are backends(Behind) based on nodes., so this is easier to do) It does not require changing the appearance of the existing layer(ui). Just provide an option to enable the advanced 3D multi-layer box node layer(node) channel(node) framework(ui). Reference implementation: https://natrongithub.github.io/ Natron (open source)
  8. edited - I'm using ver. 1.7.3.481 -open image (tried 4 or 5 different images), or create new document (created a blank document then paint bucket fill) -add curves adjustment - crash, every time, tried many (10+) times I opened an image and added a curves adjustment and it crashed. It looks like I can't make a curves adjustment layer at all without crashing Photo. Created a blank image and got the same result. I tried every type of adjustment layer and only the curves adj. failed. specs Win 7 Home Premium x64 MSI B540 Tomahawk Ryzen 7 2700x Radeon RX 590 (software version 19.8.2)
  9. Hi there, I loaded in a 32 bit EXR to Affinity Photo of a render I did, and it came in with 2 pixel layers - one with the 32 bit colour information (called RGB), and the other being a greyscale image alpha (called Alpha). Both layers have an all white alpha channel. I'm trying to copy one of the RGB alpha layer channels (they are all the same) into the alpha channel of the RGB layer to get proper transparency, and I can't seem to find a way to do it. Is there an easy way to copy data from one channel to another in Affinity Photo? Cheers
  10. I have problem copy only one channel like red from picture and paste or create new from clipboard! Always I got all channels! However, when I cut a channel, the content in the selected channel disappears. It means I have cut out the content, but all channels are sticking. it is similar when I create a new one from the clipboard. Can I just copy / cut a channel? Any help is much appreciated, thanks!
  11. Hi, I have spent hours trying to do this can anyone help? Basically I have an LRGB image of the Andromeda Galaxy but want to add in some HA (additional Red) data. I have taken a copy of the original Red data from the LRGB and blended in the new HA data and now want to put this RED-HA data back into the LRGB Red channel, replacing the original Red data. I suspect I need to create a spare channel, add the RED-HA to this and then Load the Spare channel into the Background Red. If so, the bit I cant work out is how to put the RED-HA into the Spare channel. Thanks Jon
  12. I converted my image in cmyk to do color halftone for screen printing. I go to Channel and check every CMYK layer. Composite Cyan, Composite Magenta and Composite Yellow are visible but the composite Black and Alpha are invisible? How do I print every available channels if others are not visible?
  13. I don't know if the following has already been requested, just couldn't find it in the forums. I would like the adjustment layers like "Curves", "HSL" or "Levels" to remember the channel (Master, Red, Blue, etc.) I had most recently chosen to adjust. When I reopen one of the forementioned adjustment layers, they always have "Master" selected.
  14. Semi-automatic masking / masking guide tool for Affinity Photo Here is best example i can find (youtube link) - Zephyr's Masquerade tool is semi-automatic masking tool, user paint guide lines which help algorithm to solve alpha channel. Its very fast, i don't know for sure how it works, but i would guess that those guide lines descrip to the algorithm textures and colors which are wanted (or/and unwanted) for mask. This come to my mind when i saw Adobe's new automatic subject selection demo, where user don't have any control, just some kind of lucky button, so i thought serif could make better, and i think this kind of tool would be much better with better flexibility and control. And it should be non-destructive, it could be based on editable splines/vector paths (like freehand pen tool, or affinity design's Pencil tool) for example? Maybe Affinity Photo should have "Mask persona" (all masking tools in same place, with lasso selection, mask bursh, guide brush, some procedural masking tools? vector tools, refine tools etc. with easy to use possibility control and edit multiple mask channels for same layer, if layer has multiple mask/alpha channels then mask persona would be great way to control the complexity, at least it would be nice to have way to control multiple alpha layers like separated hair mask, head mask, etc. for detailed and flexible workflow)
  15. How do I use a pixel layer containing a greyscale image as a layer mask so that white pixels show the current layer and black pixels hide the current layer, and grey shades in between represent partial transparancy? In the screenshot (attached) I want to use the black and white picture of the skull to mask the green square so that I end up with a green skull where the white is, and the black are would be transparent. any grey pixels would be different levels of transparancy. I really need step by step instructions as I just don't understand how to do this in AP as I am so used to doing it in Adobe Photoshop. Thanks
  16. In photoshop I can modify channels directly. For example, I duplicate a channel then modify it with curve, level or even the brush. Then I load the modified channel as selection. In Affinity Photo, how do I modify channels freely as I do in photoshop and load it as selection?
  17. We need a way to use black and white images as a Layer Mask. I am trying to use some grain/noise images as a matte, but my final image needs an alpha channel. Currently, I have to use PS to convert my BW images to an image with an alpha channel to use. The workflow isn't very convenient. I have attached the type of image that I would like to use as a Layer Mask. You can see that creating a selection from the image would be impossible.
  18. Hello everyone! Does anyone know if there is a way in Photo to stamp alpha values? While RGB values will overwhrite A, A does not get picked up by the stamp or it will simply not overwrite RGB. Here are two images to illustrate what I am talking about: Image1, showing where I pick up colors: Image2, showing where I want to stamp: In Image2, parts of the green should be overwritten by alpha ("erased"). If this is currently not supported, could anybody move this to feature requests? Thank you for any help! Best wishes, Shu
  19. Affinity Photo has a very nice Histogram so far, I can switch between each channel All, R, G + B All, C, M, Y + K All, L, A + B and I can activate layers and selections optional which is totally great! Thanks for that feature. But I think a luminance channel or option is needed in RGB and CMYK too, for minimum of two reasons: - I could only see and use the white and black tone spreading over the whole image - I could work without colors (incl. greyscaled icons) which confusing the eyes at work
  20. On my MacBook Pro I can't right/click on any Background channel to get the drop down ti select any of the functions associated. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
  21. Hi All! I too am making the leap from Adobe to Affinity. I use Photo from an illustration perspective, working with scanned-in drawings, removing the white backgrounds, and then going crazy cutting things out, resizing, arranging, coloring, etc. It's been great so far, just getting used to where things are in Affinity Photo. My question here is: I see how one can paint an alpha channel only (equivalent to locking pixels on a layer in PS), but how do you bulk fill an alpha channel (i.e. locked pixels) on a layer? In PS, you can select the layer (with locked pixels), choose a color, and either select "fill"from the drop-down menu, or "option/command-delete". Does anyone know the equivalent in Affinity Photo? I hope that makes sense! Thanks in advance!
  22. Working through this video from 1.30ish and using Affinity 1.4.1 For some reason, with a pixel layer selected, and when interacting with the channel panel and doing a control-click on a channel to load it to a pixel selection, the context menu will not appear, which puts a stop to things. Tried on two machines and with a couple of sample files.
  23. Thanks for such a great product. I am having problem with the channel masking. Using any background image I am unable to bring options on the channels menu. Thus I am currently unable to create any channel masks. Watched the tutorial(s), but unlike what I have seen on the video channels stand untouched. I am usind a mac. I am missing something simple, but haven't figured out what it is yet.
