  1. Thank you for the surprisingly quick release of Photo Beta for Windows! I have a few questions / comments on RAW editing as a heavy user of Photoshop and its upstream ACR workspace. While I like that Serif actually chose a common interface for traditional photo-retouching / compositing as well as RAW developing there's also features I miss right away. Photoshop's RAW development allows for global editing of image properties – pretty much in the way the Develop Persona works. That way one can raise the exposure or increase contrast – changes do apply to the whole image. Apart from that one may use any combination of tools for non-destructive brush based operations, as well as graduated filters. The impact of any contributing tool may get changed at any point in time. Even after bringing the edited RAW image into the main PS application as a smart object and having worked for hours in a composition, one can still go back and each and any global, operation as well as brush based RAW operations are still Life. One at that point can even delete the original RAW file, as it has completely gotten embedded into the .psd. If so desired, one could strip out any changes and export to .dng again. The Affinity RAW editor seems not to have any of the tools I just described. Also, RAW development in Affinity seems to be understood as the first step in a linear stream of editing operations. One may of course re-enter the Develop workspace, but all tools have forgotten the settings one had dialed in initially. I wonder what your plans are in terms of RAW editing: Do you plan to keep Develop-setting Live? Is non-destructive brush / gradient-based editing with any combination of tools on the roadmap? I also wonder what happens if one uses a couple of RAW based images on a large Poster. In Photoshop one may use these images at their full size or as a thumbnail. But one can scale that thumbnail up again or paste it into a new file and raise the output size here. As the RAW information is encapsulated in the Smart Object one never loses resolution. Obviously one shouldn't go larger that the original RAW but for all smaller output sizes one can practically forget about resolution issues. Is there a similar solution inside Affinity Photo?
  2. Hi there. I've just started trying out the affinity photo beta. I'm impressed, but I've noticed a strange behaviour. On using the brushes, when I start a stroke right on top of another stroke, I can only effect the pixels that were effected by the first stroke. This is very peculiar. Is there a way to turn it off? Thanks! Edit: nvm, figured it out! As you were.
  3. Hi, I don't know if this is a bug or a Feature Request, I think is a bug, but I'm not sure, so I'm posting here. The fact is that I can't put a brush (like Texture for exemple) in the stroke of a path, like I can do in Affinity Design. In the Stroke panel there is Properties... button that goes to a Brush panel, but it is all locked! I can't use it. Some one know how I can put brushes in a path in Affinity Photo? Thank you, Paulo
  4. Hi, I'm a bit confused about the size of the brush. In the top panel the size is in px and in the stroke panel it is in pt. It took me a while to find out that the size is the same but just the unit of measure is different. Is there a possibility to have the same unit for both panels? Regards Jochen
  5. Is there a way to make a sharpened front brush as part of Adobe Photoshop Brushes ... Why are there only to brush the front blunt? The update is necessary so the front brushes can be pointed.
  6. Hello, when I choose a brush in Pixel Persona I can set it to 50% maximum in the setting. Is this normal or a bug? What irritates me: In the german language forum for Affinity Designer and Photo there someone writes (he has a Mac) that he can overwrite the value of 50 - but what sense makes it to increase a value manually when the controller only comes until 50%? By the way. When I entry a value >50, it goes automatically back to 50. Regards, Martin
  7. Hello, As this lesson here Stylish Strokes: Textured Lines the bee which is a round circle has a brush stroke that starts and ends in full, which means that the brush stroke covers all the areas see photo. But in my case there is a small gap in the circle! see photo. Is this a problem or this is the way it should look? And Thank you :)
  8. Hey guys! Its about time I said something on here... :D Here is an Ivy foliage brush I made for school and it turned out well so I thought it would be worth sharing! Original leaf image was CC0 Feel free to use it however! Stay Creative and God bless :) Ivy Brush.afbrushes.zip
  9. Even tough i have a tablet im not good with it - in other apps smoother/less precise drawing options always saved me, and when not Lazy Nezumi. Unfortunally Lazy Nezumi isn't working with my particular tablet+affinity beta on windows, and AD's default smooth while good isn't enougth for my terrible jibbling lines. So like i do 90% of the time i go with the pen tool like im used to... But i can't for my life find how to apply brushes to curves made with the pen. Am i missing something? And if im not how thats not allowed? I mean, since brush tool also create curves, i tought that wouldn't make a difference how i created a curve. Surely pen misses pressure and speed of a stylus so i can get not having that- but vector brushes should apply to curve right? Is there a more hidden menu option for it? If there aren't is there any work around? Heck, i wouldn't mind to lock curve editing to apply a brush if thats what it takes. Took me a long time tracing a image (im loving AD, can't stop using it!) that i planed to use with a brush... im stuck now. Any ideas?
  10. Hello, Ronnie McBride created a really nice rope brush for me and I am wondering if it's possible to apply a fill to the brush shape, not the path which the brush follows? The image I am working on now is attached and what I am trying to do is fill the rope shape with a fill. I've tried a few things but it seems the brush pattern isn't recognized as a shape to fill? The only way I found I could add a fill is to rasterize the path with the rope brush applied.. is that the answer?
  11. Hello, I've been using Affinity for a while now, and have liked it quite a lot. Photo bends quite well to digital painting (sometimes even better than PS) but today I noticed a tiny problem. When I use Paint Brush with a brush that has texture (I've included a picture), the brush cursor shows all the little holes in the brush too, which makes it a bit hard to see what I'm painting. Is there a way to reduce the cursor's visibility somehow? For example turning it into a crosshair permanently (for now crosshair works only when the brush is really small) or showing only the outline of the brush, not it's insides too? I've looked through the Preferences and the forums, but I haven't found a solution yet. Thanks!
  12. Hello--I want to create a vector text headline to use in a design which I'll enlarge and print on fabric. Like a T shirt, I guess. I'd like to use my own handwriting but I don't know how to vectorise it in Affinity Design? Any tips? I'm avoiding the pen tool as I'm so rubbish at it. Thanks for any advice.
  13. HELP! I am completely stuck. I tried all settings but somehow it will not work... Q: How to configure Wacom Intuos Pro + Affinity Photo, that key ring can be used to alter brush size? configure zoom in/out to work correctly? Will appreciate any help! :) CU, Roland
  14. Apparently the brushes are not working correctly, as you can see in the picture I'm using a brush that has a broad center and is narrower in the beginning and the end,but in the figure, the line has a solid and uniform stroke.
  15. Hi I have just installed the windows beta version on windows 7 with an old wacom intuos 3. I have pressure on raster brushes but the vector brush pressure does not work. Is this me and my settings or is it not supported yet? I have the pressure option set to on and I have tried other options and played around with the pressure graph, but it doesn't make any difference - all the stroke is the same thickness. Hope it was okay to start a new thread I'm not used to forums. Advice appreciated, Cheers Adam
  16. Greetings all, I'm not sure that this is a bug... but I noticed the scroll slider disappears from the Brush palette window after non-use. If you're using a mouse, not a big deal... scrolling down will invoke the slider. If you're using a Wacom tablet and pen, you are unable to invoke the slider unless you switch back to a mouse and perform an action that triggers the slider. My personal opinion is that the scroll slider element is always on in the Brush palette window or the app detects user input (mouse vs. tablet) and toggles the element accordingly. If I'm missing something, my sincere apologies... I'm havin' a heck of a Monday morning. ;-P Regards, jB
  17. Still cant see imported brushes in the drop down menu, even when its everything ok
  18. Hi I'm trying to apply a textured line style to a circle. My problem is that I get a gap in the circle, as seen in pic. I want a continues line all around the circle. Any suggestions how to solve this? Thanks Susan
  19. Hello Affinity, Would be great, snap raster brush to any curve line while drawing... sorry for my english, is little bit limited ;)
  20. Adobe Photoshop has a History Brush which can be used to paint back from History states. I used it to create digital pictures by painting onto a new blank layer with one of Photoshops art brushes e.g water colour with reduced opacity and gradually building uptake opacity. Please note I don't mean the ART History brush, just the history brush and choosing one of the brush range. Please see attached jpeg example. Unfortunately I cannot find a history brush, or any mention of it in tutorials or help. However while searching the forums I did find: Posted 12 October 2014 - 07:32 PM We will have an upgraded brush engine, new brush sets and a new colour mixing brush for Photo. The history brush in Photo I will also be very useful for digital painting. Is there a history brush I cannot find or has it not yet been introduced? Any advice gratefully received.
  21. Hey guys, I want to draw a double circle arrow for my origami tutorial ebook, I used ronniemcbride method to create the arrow head, then I create a circle and convert it to curve and cut it into half and duplicate it to become the double arrow circle, like below, but the arrow head is crooked, how do I make perfect double circle arrow? Left: arrowhead brush created by me Right: arrowhead brush created by ronniemcbride
  22. Now when importing brushes it creates the category name based in the file but dont show up in the dropdown menu
  23. Is there a way to keep all brush strokes in a single layer instead of making a layer for every stroke?
  24. I've discovered that I can duplicate a lot of Painter brush effects using the Lighting Filter and Textures on individual brush strokes. Does anyone know how, or if it's even possible in AP, to create a brush that will produce a reasonable facsimile of Painter's Distort Brush? For those not familiar with Painter Brushes, this is what it would look like.
  25. Hey folks – I created this illustration as a parody of a quasi-famous NY designer I recently saw. It was my first attempt with AD, and at using variable brush strokes / curves. I found the experience pretty straightforward, almost fun. I typically use illustrator for renderings like this but wanted to test out how AD worked since I had just purchased it recently. I think the only major challenge I had was that I didn't like that I couldn't use the eye-dropper on different colors to select the color. That part wasn't intuitive to me. After watching some youtube videos and some snippets on the site, I got the hang of it after a while. This is one in a series of character illustrations I'll be doing. His name is Tobison Vanderherd: Senior Design Strategist (for now anyway). I'm going to be fleshing out an entire agency based on endangered species because, after all, agencies are sort of dying out. Anyway, don't know how far I'll take it, but it's certainly fun getting familiar with the tool and experimenting. I'm eventually going to take the illustration into After Effects and try some puppeteering/ voiceover work to see how that holds up. I'll share my results if anyone's interested. Been enjoying watching what everyone has been posting and looking forward to seeing what other creations folks come up with. Thanks for your time and feedback, Anthony
