  1. Hello, hopefully you can point in a direction to explain this problem before I rip the ears off my computer bloke. Very few if any "experts" out here in the australian bush know too much a P/shop so it's far to say they know a lot less about Affinity photo ; or ever heard of it !. Not working on massive files -- most under 500mb and most far less than that . the number of layers and the number of opened files doesn't seem to make a lot difference but I guess it has some effect . Affinity Photo ; Win10 PC with 16gb of RAM ; SSD (93.9 Gb free of 222gb) plus another hard drive for storage (395gb of 894) according windows . The bigger drama seems to be with the brush effect trailing along way behind the brush and even stopping the program to catch up . Using a basic round brush -- various hardness and sizes but mostly 100% opacity --- basically using as I have always done with LR It has been slowly getting slower Opening JPG files from Lr5 and usually saving back the Lr5 as a flattened jpg file Maybe I missing something in the brush settings that I very seldom change --- Affinity brushes and brushing seem so complicated --- read useless . Sorry Do you have an answer ? Need more information ? How do I explain it to the computer bloke ? Cheers, thanks for at least reading
  2. Brush color(black/white) behave differently from on the Quick Mask or the Layer Mask. I can paint only white regardless of the brush color. I would like the brush to behave like on the Quick Mask or the Layer Mask. Is this a bug?
  3. I read that the windows shortcut for brush size and hardness are holding Alt + Right Mouse Button and then dragging left/right or up/down. However this is not working for me. Am I doing something wrong?
  4. Hello, I am a long time user of Photoshop and also purchased Affinity Photo and Designer. My original intention was to replace photoshop but I'll show you a big dealbreaker for me that still keeps me on photoshop for digital painting. Simply put, the alpha of a single brush stroke should not MIX with itself. It should instead REPLACE what ever alpha has already been painted during that stroke. Best way to describe this annoyance is in the screenshot i've prepared below where i tried to replicate a standard hard brush in affinity Photo as best i can and do the same brush stroke in PS and Affinity Photo. As you can see, the alpha of the brush stroke is mixed instead of replaced which creates these undesirable dark edges lines.... This appears to be hard coded into the engine...
  5. Like in Photo Persona, remembering the brush setting for each tool individually is preferable.
  6. Hi, I found a bug or a strange behavior when using the Paint Brush Tool in Pixel Persona in Affinity Designer on the Mac and on the iPad app. I found this behavior even in Affintiy Photo on the iPad so I am afraid it is a feature rather than a bug When using the Paint Brush Tool in Pixel Persona on a newly created pixel layer and there are no other pixel layers visible a strange behavior is showing: The first stroke is not showing until I stop drawing and hover over the areas that I have drawn on. With every stroke that I draw outside of the previously touched areas the drawing shows missing artifacts and I have to hover over or zoom a bit to make the drawn visible. A work-around for this behavior is to have a fully covered pixel layer under the new layer. Then the frist stroke on the new layer is shown instantly – as you like it as designer. I attach a video of that behavior and the afdesign-file. I use ADe 1.10.1 on a MacBookPro13,3 with macOS 11.6 and ADe 1.10.2 on an iPad Pro 10,5 with iOS 14.8. I like Affinity Designer a lot – it' a great app for my purposes – and I hope this bug gets to be fixed soon. Cheers! ADe-pixelbrush-bug.mov FipsMusica-test.afdesign
  7. Hi All. Thanks for this moment. Can I create a texture brush that does not override/thicken previous strokes. One example: I want to create a curly-haired teddy bear, but with all of my current texture brushes if I touch a previous stroke it doubles the texture and darkens it. I just want one mass texture and to deal with the shading and highlights on other layers. Any thoughts? Cheers, John.
  8. I made some islands and edited the 'coastlines' with a brush I bought called 'vintage nautical map brushes'. So these are brushes that can be used as boundary lines and coastlines to make maps. As you can see on some of the coastlines (the blue ones) these brushes are, as they should be, neatly from thick to thin. While with other objects (the red ones) they are the other way around, so from thin to thick. Not how it's meant to be. What exactly am I doing wrong or how can I change this? In other words: how can I control the inside and outside of a brush for a line? The originale file: islands - kopie.afdesign
  9. Hello guys. When I use Inpainting Brush Tool it does literally nothing. Is it a bug or am I doing something wrong? I haven't changed anything in the tool's options. At least intentionally.
  10. Hi, I'm new to use Affinity Photo and Affinity Design. Till now I used Photoshop. I'm missing some function in Affinity. Can someone tell me how to rotate the canvas in Affinity Photo and how to change the Brush size with the mouse like Photoshop.
  11. When using the brush tool in Affinity apps I always get very odd brush size increments when using the square bracket ( [ ] ) keys to change the brush size. If I use a 10px brush and use "]" to size it up one increment, it doesn't go to the expected 15px, but rather to 11,5 px. And then, if I press the "[" key to size the brush back down to 10px from 11,5px, it randomly ends up at 9,8px (?). Pressing "]" three times from 9px results in 9px, 10,4px, 11,9px, and 13,7px, instead of the expected 9px, 10px, 15px, and 20px values. I find this a bit strange, as I feel that decimal pixel values for brush sizes make little to no difference, and it's just generally odd that using the square brackets to change brush sizes doesn't just use rounded increments - I hate mentioning Photoshop as a reference example, but if if ain't broke... For instance, using the brackets between the values 1px and 10px should only change the brush size in increments of 1px (1,2,3,4,5px...), anything between 10px and 50px should change in increments of 5px (10, 15, 20, 25, 30px...), anything between 50px and 100px should change in increments of 10px (50, 60, 70, 80, 90px...), anything between 100px and 200px should change in increments of 25px (100, 125, 150, 200px), then 50px, and anything above 300px should change in increments of 100px every time you press the square bracket(s). Is there a significance to these weird, decimal pixel increment values? If so, is there a way to change it back to something more normal/user friendly?
  12. I like that I can drag on the text for width to resize my brush. But since its aligned to the left hand side of the screen, it is not possible for me to reduce the brush width, as I cannot drag towards the left. Perhaps other checkbox settings could be moved to the left of the width setting or it could have an empty margin that can be used to drag over.
  13. With the brush tool, you can't currently use angle constraint lines while holding shift. Please add this (like in Photo's pixel brush) although click dragging + holding down shift should constrain to straight lines at 15 degree angles.
  14. This might be a silly question, but is there a way to find out which brush was used for a particular line? Just selecting the curve's layer doesn't seem to cause the brush that was used to be automatically selected in the brush panel and with both "the box set" and "Daub Essentials" I've already got quite a few brushes and it's hard to remember which was used where.
  15. Hi, Just bought your amazing program yesterday and have already created several projects for clients with it. Obviously coming from 20 years of Illustrator experience there is a little bit of learning curve to get used to the new short-cuts and features. But a pretty productive day all-in-all. I was trying to use the size and opacity variance feature in the stroke/brush editing tab and can't seem to get it to work. The width works perfectly, but the size and opacity appear to do nothing. The preview updates fine in the editing window, but nothing happens to the object on the page. Am I doing something wrong? I really want this to work because I used the stroke width variance tool in illustrator all the time and hope I can replicate that function in Designer. Thanks in advance for your help.
  16. Affinity Photo brush editor seems complete although it requires a pair of important blending modes similar to the existing "darker color" but allowing to cover transparent pixels; these new modes could be called, for instance, mix if less transparent (or mix if more opaque) and replace if less transparent (or replace if more opaque) or something shorter. If you don't understand the above explanation or think it is not important then try to repeat the same pencil hatching I did in the uploaded video, and you will come to the conclusion that it is not possible to get such a smooth and easily controllable hatching in Affinity Photo. I hope these 2 options will be added in future releases, they're so convenient and easy to implement. Thanks for paying attention. pencil-hatching.mp4
  17. If you pick a thick brush from "Basic" group and paint some shapes you will notice the following issues: 1. Center color is more transparent(gray) and border is more opaque(black). NOTE: If you reduce "flow" parameter to 10%, the center of the brush becomes more opaque, which is very strange. (see uploaded image) 2. "Blend mode" has a lot of interesting options but they don't seem to change anything, in most cases. I've been programming computer games and graphic effects some time ago and had to solve similar problems related to transparency calculations. I hope it helps. Nothing more to say, except that your software is very good, congrats.
  18. I am using Affinity photo trial to do some post-processing on stitched panoramas. To get rid of the occasional stich fault I am using the clone or healing brush quite a bit. To use them - because of the perspective you need to quite often rotate the brush which works well for positive numbers but if you need to rotate a brush slightly in the other direction you need to enter 358 or 359 - a negative number like -1 or -2 is not accepted. It would be very helpful if that could be introduced at some point - it would make work with the clone and healing brush easier. Cheers.
  19. Hey Guys! Im just getting into Affinity Photo and editing in general and have a couple of questions: 1- is there a quick way to rotate a brush head in Affinity photo? - I know you can dbl click the brush type and drag the rotation slider but wondered if there is a short cut? 2- Does anyone know if the Social Kit Pro plug-in works with Affinity photo? Many thanks!
  20. Hello! I am a very happy convert from Photoshop to Affinity except for one thing: the brush tool settings. Photoshop still is a lot better with these because of their more sophisticated brush tool modification options. I am thinking specifically about dual brush, brush pose, and build up, which don't seem to be available in Affinity photo. I recently bought a set of .abr brushes to compare and contrast the import success between Photoshop and AP, and I'm sorry to say that while Photoshop was able to accommodate some really nice subtle effects (I just want a nice, natural inking brush. There are a million great "big wash" brushes for affinity, but I can't find good liners for the life of me!) that were set into the .abr files, but Affinity imported them as regular round brushes with a noise texture on them, which looked awful! I would really like: 1. to be given some actually helpful tutorials on how to create natural-looking brushes in Affinity (I've had a heck of a time trying to find what I'm looking for. People make tutorials for really silly, goofy brushes, but nothing really practical for fine art!) 2. For the Affinity brush settings to be upgraded to be more competitive with the Photoshop brush settings. 3. For AP to be able to import .abr brushes properly without cutting out the settings and ruining the brush. Thanks for hearing me out! Again, I am LOVING the program for the most part, but I'm just not able to do inking on this program to the level that I want, because of these settings issues. ~K
  21. How do I smooth the crushed velvet fabric in this chair without losing too much detail in the back? I've tried frequency separation and it keeps all the texture, just makes the image lighter (lighter image attached to this thread). Really not sure how to approach this, some help would be greatly appreciated please!
  22. Hi, i ran into weird brush opacity issue in AP 1.8. See the attached image. What i did: 1. Create new document (attached) 2. Select Brush tool via 'B' shortcut 3. Select Brush 2 4. Select 'Black 50%' color swatch from the Grays palette 5. Draw upper left X 6. Select Brush 1 7. Draw middle left X 8. Select Brush 2 9. Draw bottom left X. Here is the issue: why there seems to be opacity in the color/brush?!?! If i switch to Move tool, and then back to Brush, and redo everything (right side), it happens again. Windows 10 64bit Home, AP 1.8.3.641 Cheers -k brush_issue.afphoto
  23. Whilst using the Painter Mixer Brush, I've realised the "Flow" parameter doesn't have any effect. Only the "strength" Parameter has an effect. It would be very useful if we could also change the flow of the brush, especially when using pen pressure - as otherwise you can't vary the strength of the brush on a stroke by stroke basis. Alternatively, it would be great to use pen pressure to vary the strength of the brush instead.
  24. I turned on my pc today and found that all my brushes do as per what is in the photo. Does anyone know how to change this back to just normal opacity? I can't draw using this as it ruins the colour.
