  1. Hi, I'm trying to create a singular curve by joining multiple individual curves together using the ADD boolean operation, but it is not working as expected. I have the following design below consisting of multiple curves, and basically I want to join them together so it becomes one single curve: When I used the ADD boolean operation to attempt to join the curves together it came out looking like this: I also tried to use the XOR boolean operation and then use the "Break Curve" and "Join Curve" options respectively to remove the newly intersecting pen curves, but for some reason the areas where the curves should join right after implementing the XOR operation become a jumbled mess (which makes using the Break- and Join Curve actions almost impossible): Hence I'm asking for help with this because I truly don't know how else to achieve this. Not sure if this question has been asked before in the Forum, but any help would be truly appreciated :).
  2. I've seen lots of topics on Breaking curves and Joining curves and I am still having trouble. I have an elongated rounded corner rectangle. I'm trying to turn it into an elongated C. I did an Expand Stroke. Then I selected a node on the outside curve, hit Break Curve. Then selected a node on the inside curve and hit Break Curve. I can now move a node so that they look to be separate, no path between the nodes. But the fill still continues between the broken nodes. Then I try to do a join and they will not join. I used the snap to get one node from the outside curve to align right over the node from the inside curve, select them both by holding shift and drawing a box around the two nodes, hit join curves. And sure enough they are still separate. I suspect the join just isn't going to work seeing as the fill continues along that they aren't truly broken. I would guess that I couldn't have fill if I had two truly open curves. Has anyone any ideas? Has anyone tried breaking a shape following an Expand Stroke?
  3. Hi, So, just installed Designer update 1.8.4 and have noticed the following: Draw a line with the pen tool then add a new node with the node tool but the 'Break Curve' option in the toolbar is now greyed out. It can only be accessed by deselecting the line then selecting it again. This was NOT the case before the 1.8.4 update. It is an operation I perform pretty much every day and it is really annoying as it breaks my workflow every time. Running Designer on MacBookPro 2019, 16" with MacOS Catalina 10.15.6 Please let me know what is different or fix it please if it is a bug. Many thanks and best wishes Break Curve greyed out.afdesign
  4. In another thread on the forum we just found an inconsistancy in the software while using 'break curve'. There is a different result when selecting multiple nodes and than press 'break curve' than when you single select a node, press 'break curve' and than select the other node and press 'break curve'. Break on multiple nodes seem to behave differently than break on single nodes per step: * When we select both upper nodes and press 'break curve' --> The broken section we get as a new curve-layer UNDER the current layer, and Designer select both layers * When we select the left node first, press 'break curve', than selected the right node and press 'break curve' --> The broken section we get as a new curve-layer ABOVE the current layer, and designer select both layers In the first situation when a user clicks on a node that just got broken, we select the original shape (it has priority above the broken-out part). But in the second situation when a user clicks on that node, he selects the new node on the broken-out part and moves the broken curve-node (it has priority above the original shape because of the layer order is different now). I would expect both situations to have the same layer priorities as result. Where the just broken-out curve-layer would best be on top I think, so that layer is selected in the viewport so we can immediately move the broken-out curve after pressing 'break-curve'. This is happening in both the current version (1.6.5.123) as well as in version 1.7 RC2 (1.7.0.350) Video * First I use break the curve by selecting the upper nodes one by one and using 'break curve' on each node. --> result is the new layer with the broken curve-segment is on top, so the nodes of the just created curve (the broken segment) are on top and got selected when clicking or dragselect, because that layer is the upper layer * Than I multi-select both upper-nodes at once and press 'break curve' once --> result is the new layer with the broken curve-segment is on the bottom, so the nodes of the original curve (with fill) are on top and got selected when clicking or dragselect, because that layer is the upper layer inconsistant behaviour break curve.mp4
  5. Hi, After using 'break curve' Designer generates new nodes for the new broken nodes/segments. But the new nodes are behind the existing nodes, so when selecting using click it selects the existing nodes, because these are on top. Most of the time I would like to select the new nodes (of the broken part) instead. But how can we do that? See video: * Select two anchors of a shape * Break the curve --> Designer adds new nodes on the same place for the broken curve * Try to select the nodes of the broken curve-segment without moving the existing nodes... I would like to move the broken segment nodes up, but I can't manage to find a way to do this without moving the 'old' nodes first... I tried holding ctrl, alt and shift when selecting the nodes to get the back-node instead of the front-node, but that doesn't work. How can we select these back-nodes (of the broken segment)? break curve.mp4
  6. Hi! I am quite new to the world of design and I'd like to pursue it as a hobby. I found out about affinity designer and i LOVE it so far. However I've noticed q lot of times while playing around with it, that sometimes the "snap" does not properly work, or at least I might not use it properly and therefore always do the same mistake: Whenever I create a symmetrical image, I first create half of the grafic and then copy paste and mirror it to get the image I want. In 90% of the cases though, I end up with the shapes not being perfectly together and it results in a gap between the images. I mostlay always discover it at the end, because I use a helper line which covers the gap. Is there an easy technique which allows me to fix this? I've tried to break both curves and then join the top and bottom nodes, but nothing happens. Also when trying to "snap" both nodes on top of each other, I can't get rid of the gap. I'd be grateful for any advice.
  7. I have huge problems when working with shapes, how to open them / break them, how to join curves, how to close curves. It always end up in a mess. Is there a GOOD tutorial explaining this? I have looked around, and this very basic very important topic hasn't really given me answers. Especially the 'break curve' function is a major headache. I can click a node where I want the curve split, click the 'Break Curve' button in the Action panel, and nothing happens. The curve is as whole as it was before I started. This is really driving me nuts. Also, is there a way to toggle handles on off. When I want to move a node, I almost always end up grabbing a handle instead of the node, unless I am zoomed in really much. I hope there is someone out there who can help me out. Thank you!
  8. In this tutorial I'm gonna show you how to draw a simple paper clip in Affinity designer. In the first step we will draw the single paper clip as a curve and will use the actions break curve and join curve. With the pen tool we will extend the curve so that it looks like a real paper clip. In the second step (8:18) we will link two paper clips together. Therefor we will use the function expand stroke and the operations devide and add. In the third step we will use a rectangle as a clipping mask to create the drawing for the closed paper clip brush (12:38). At 16:12 I'll show you how to export the paper clip drawings as transparent png files. Creating different brushes in AD and AP will been shown at 18:05. https://youtu.be/Iaq7lmSsVoA
  9. If I select more than one node on a curve and click Break Curves, only one of the nodes is broken. Is this by design or a bug? If by design, then I'd like to request the behavior is altered, as breaking a curve into multiple shorter sections is very useful at times, and currently rather time consuming. Thanks
  10. Hi there, I was editing a symbol and, after I pressed A on the keyboard, I've got this: I guess it doesn't say too much in order to figure out what happened. Anyway, I'll keep testing and I'll check if this happens again.
  11. What is up. I'm here because I can't for the life of me figure out how to break this shape so that the following gap isn't filled with the black color: I've tried breaking just about every curve I can by selecting the nodes at each "end" individually and selecting: > Break Curve From the action bar. However, it never seems to do what I want? Can anyone explain how I can achieve what I'm trying to do?
  12. I know that you are working on adding the ability to scale, move, & rotate only selected nodes of a shape in the workspace, but I don't know if this will enable being able to select several nodes & using the break curve Action button to break them all with one click. That would be a real timesaver for me since as things are now I can only break a curve at one node at a time (& if two or more are selected there is no indication that no break has occurred). Another timesaver would be keyboard shortcuts for at least this action, if not all of them. As an aside, the knife tool already on the roadmap might make this feature irrelevant if it includes the ability to 'snap' to nodes for precision cuts.
  13. Say I want a section of the black oval to overlap the blue. What's the best way to go about this in designer? I guess I'm looking for something similar to illustrator's shape builder tool.
