  1. Hello Affinity team! I've had some problems with merging curves layers and in the result I asked this wonderful community for help. At first I thought I must be missing some tools and someone here will guide me to the light, but seems like it's the software that misses pretty important tool. Please, get familiar with the thread I started: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/46069-designer-simplifying-closing-single-curve/& Issues: - dividing curves when hitting "Add" - no easy solution to merging curve that overlaps itself 2 ideas emerged: - breaking curves in innocuous places and then hitting add, - creating rectangles in divided areas and then removing some of the nodes. It's something and working for now, but it's pretty time consuming, and for someone facing deadlines on the daily basis can be a deal breaker. Suggestion: - getting "Add" tool to merge singe curve that overlaps itself, - or creating another tool that will do so.
  2. I'm using version 1.5.0.26 RC of Affinity Designer, following the tutorial found at: On minute 2:10 you can see what I'm trying to do, you can place to vector objects over each other and try apply the boolean add operator while pressing the "alt" key. This keeps the two vector objects, however instead of joining them or adding them it subtracts them.
  3. Hi gang, I'm running into something that was confusing at first, and now--an hour later--is frustrating. I'd like to draw an outline around an object in a picture so I can remove it from the image. The object is squarish, so I made a rectangle around it, used the nodes to adjust it just right, and finished "outlining" the thing. I tried subtracting the outline from the image, and the image from the outline, and sliding the layers of each onto each other in the layers panel. They seem to disappear, which I've seen that others have noticed, too. I've made the outline shape empty (uncolored), and then colored it white (like all the demos show), but no luck. I can accomplish the same thing with the other shapes (ellipse, heart, etc.) but not my custom one. What am I doing wrong? -R
  4. Given a circle C and a series of concentric squares A1, A2 etc, I would like C to cut across A1...An right down the middle and apply a subtraction on all of them. If I select all of them and try to do it wholesale, it applies as if A3-(A2-A1) etc, when what I really want is (C-A1) U (C-A2) etc. I have attached pictures of the setup and what I actually want. When I apply a grouped subtraction, everything gets deleted, obviously. Is there a simple way of doing this? Thank you, craftybones
  5. Hi all, I had the situation, that I created an object as a mask (which is a non destructive boolean object - I love this functionality). But when I use that object as a mask, I loose the ability to "on-the-fly-modify" the mask itself. I have to the the mask object out of its function as a mask - to have the booleans to click on an modify. After that I can use it again as a mask. But that means again, I cannot pick the separate mask-objects to modify ... so I have to start the same process again and again... Thanks for thinking about that issue, Stefan.
  6. Hi team, just wondering if there has been any headway on the boolean tidying up issue? See attached. It's weird because it seems inconsistent. It appears that the closer two paths are to each other the more nodes gets placed all along each path and sometimes even a third path is generated from the two intersecting/overlapping paths. What makes this problematic is that after the boolean if you want to further manipulate the resulting shape, you are dealing with sometimes hundreds of nodes. For example here in the attached windshield/windscreen image I would have duplicated the darker "window seal" element to build a shadow area under the upper ridge. Because of all of the nodes now I'm forced to redraw a new element for that and try to get it into the same shape. Not to mention cleaning up and removing unwanted extra pieces... Sorry to keep harping on this but to me this is very important stuff and I hope it's being addressed. :)
  7. Hello When I try to use boolean operation I have to completely overlap my shape to get it subtracted correctly. If I use the snapping features and then subtract the shape, Affinity Designer leave me some leftover vectors. Am I doing anything wrong ? Thanks AD.mov test.afdesign
  8. Hey, it would be great to be able to break paths at intersection points. Easiest implementation was something like a boolean operation - select two paths, click a button and get the nicely broken path segments. Feature suggestion 1: Break-paths-at-intersection-points-operation. A workaround is to create new nodes manually and break them individually afterwards. But here I ran into another missing feature. The current behavior of the node-adding doesn't allow me to create new nodes using snapping. Thus my cuts aren't aligned perfectly (I might have exaggerated it a little on the screens). Feature suggestion 2: Use snapping while creating nodes on existing paths. An optimal way would be the option to drag a new node on an existing path to activate candidates to snap onto. [Feature suggestion 3: Combine adding nodes and breaking them like the scissors-tool in Illustrator does. Could be implemented as an option in the node-tool. Similar snapping behavior as described above] ~Andrej PS: I know that I could perform a standard subtract operation in the first place and then break the paths to achieve the result shown in the screens. But I'm adding these requests to improve workflows.
  9. Dear all, I am trying to create a simple vector shape logo, however when I use the divide boolean tool to erase certain parts of shapes I get a very thin white space between the divided shapes. I am probably doing this wrong, however would like to know if there is a way of dividing or erasing certain parts of shapes places on each other without this space as it is not as crisp as i would like. I have attached a photo to show what I mean. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks :-)
  10. Hi Folks, Me again asking daft questions. Can someone have a look at the attached file and explain to me how I can "cut" the canopy section out and leave that area blank? I will then need to put a similar shape within that hollowed out area but leaving a thin boarder between the new canopy shape and the fuselage. Make sense? thought not, but hopefully someone out there can make sense of what I am trying to do. Cheers again folks. Mark Door Design Post client edits.afdesign
  11. This is my second full image produced with Photo. Once again it is quite simple and, once again, it is focused on familiarising myself with a small set of specific tools. My previous image (the egg) focused on pen and brushes. This image focuses on vector shapes, boolean operations, fills and mesh warping. The snake was created from the rectangular texture shown in the inset above. I used the wonderful Mesh Warp Tool. This is an amazing tool!! The ability to define where you put the mesh grid yourself is just terrific. Whoever developed this gets my five star award ...... so if someone from Serif is reading this please pass this on to them. :) I also played with the Deform Filter but failed utterly to comprehend its workings and got hopelessly lost. So I shall have to hope that there is a tutorial on this later. This really is a great app! :) :)
  12. Just had quite a few questions about making boolean operations non destructive as we included it in the feature video. It's just a question of holding alt when you apply the operation, as shown here:
