  1. Dear Affinity Users, I noticed that since recently, whenever I do a boolean subtraction, I am left afterwards with some thin parabolic snippets that stick out from the original shape. Even if I try to do another subtract operation to remove that snippet, it remains unaffected. I thought that this might be a bug, or has it something to do with my settings? Thanks!
  2. I do a lot of logo designs and I'm running into some issues, when I'm building a shape using multiple pieces of geometry, and want to "Add" them together to create a single compound shape it sometimes leaves micro-gaps. It's most notable when you "Divide" overlapping shapes, and then "Add" them again - it will always leave these gaps and it's really annoying. When I do "Add" I expect it to fill in those micro-gaps. I wish we had the Shape Builder tool already
  3. Hi - I'm sorry if this is just me not really knowing how vector engines work, but I've run into a problem with a project I'm working on. So, what I'm trying to do is use the boolean operations to cut out a section of a shape with a vector brush tool/ pencil tool/ pen tool. However, what's being cut out of the shape is the "fill" of the brush shape. So, if you draw a curve and set its fill to a colour, it will "fill in" from the curve's starting point to endpoint. And that is not what I'm trying to do. I just want to cut out the shape of the actual brushstroke. Is this possible or am I just going about it the wrong way? I've attached a simplified image that basically visualises what I've written so you might be able to better understand what I'm trying to do and formulate. *edit: so the blue and purple line illustrates what's happening while the green line is the thing I actually want to cut out. If possible, the ideal scenario would be that the green that is within the red circle would be cut out or would become its own shape while leaving the outside parts unchanged. Best, fjdb
  4. Hi folks, A view month ago i created an issue because the boolean operations are not working correctly in some circumstances. But this tool is very help and useful to create own vector shapes. So my question is when do affinity intend to fix them? I know, it´s a very complex thing that needs time, but my first posting about this was in september 2018, four month ago and so i want to ask when it is fixed. Perhaps there is a timeline? Greetz Uwe
  5. (1) Not sure this is a bug or not, but I'm unable to boolean merge (add) the 2 curves in the attached document. It doesn't work directly and it doesn't work via compound. I simply get an empty result set after an operation (both curves disappear from screen.) For some reason going to the "Layer" menu the "Expand Strokes" option is offered for both curves, even strokes are disabled… feels a bit odd too. I remember that there was/is some issue with the smart nodes, so I made sure to select all points and convert them to the normal ones ("Smooth"), but this didn't solve the problem either. (2) Unrelated to the actual boolean failure: if there's some sort of error Affinity Designer should report them (pop up the assistant and let me know the operation failed or something). Basically it just fails silently. In a more complex situation I might entirely miss the problem and then run in problems later when I notice a graphical element is suddenly missing for some reason. Let the user know there was an error. Bug,1.afdesign
  6. Hello everyone! (I am new here, so pardon me if I posted my issue in the wrong category.) I've been playing around with Affinity Designer on and off for the past year and a half. I really want to fully transition to Designer (coming from Illustrator), but I keep bumping into the same little annoying issues that would make my workflow painfully slow. One issue in particular has to do with the Boolean operations. I've seen this question raised a few times on the forum before, but no solution so far. Will there ever be? The problem It appears that the Boolean Divide action doesn't work well with shapes that have one or more overlapping edges. The result is a big mess. You either get the compound shape partially divided or not at all. Then you would also get those pesky thin "hair" lines coming out parts of the resulted group. Artifacts... artifacts everywhere! Anyone can replicate this issue in a matter of seconds with basic shapes. Create a square and a circle of the same size. Apply different fills. Align them to the center of the spread and make sure that the square is behind the circle in order to see the individual pieces better. Divide both shapes using the Boolean actions panel. Normally you should have the four corners of the square that are seen outside the circle cut into separate pieces. The result would be 5 shapes in total (including the ellipse in the center). However, Affinity Designer has something else in mind (see images below). I have given up hope that they will fix this bug. Therefore, can anyone suggest an alternative work-around method for this issue instead? Thanks in advance!
  7. Is there an equivalent to Adobe Illustrator's shaper tool I can use to quickly cut off excess elements of overlapping shapes? In Illustrator, once accessed using the shortcut shift + m, it can be used to quickly cut and combine selected shapes. (I have attached a video demonstrating the feature) Since this tool was pretty handy in quickly creating new shapes out of a bunch of others, it would be stoked to learn if something similar exists within Affinity Designer! Thanks in advance. PS: I am new to the forum and forums in general, so let me know if I may have posted this the wrong way Shaper Tool Demonstration.mov
  8. Hi! I am busy designing a logo figure in Affinity Photo but I am quite new to this program. The problem I am currently having is that I can't cut a shape out of another shape. Now I found very helpful how-to videos where they use the boolean olerations tool but I can't seem to find it in Affinity, as seen on the picture I attached. Is there anyway I can cut the shape out OR find the boolean operations? Thanks in advance!
  9. I often use the boolean operations but sometimes I have to take several extra steps because of the way Designer performs the operations. As it is now, if I have a shape that has any overlap (and I have set the fill mode to winding (non-zero)) and then I add some other shapes that I want to subtract, it also subtracts the overlapping area too. This seems odd as it kind of defeats the whole purpose of having a winding (non-zero) setting. I would like to request that if a shape has a fill mode of winding (non-zero) that the boolean operation treat the overlapping areas as part of the whole shape. This would greatly help me to work faster. Thanks! Sorry if my explanation doesn't make sense, please see my attached sample. BooleanQuestion.afdesign
  10. I have a drawing with only 2 shapes in it and I want to subtract the orange one to make a hole in the green one. No matter what Operations button I hit everything disappears. I reverse the order of the layers and still everything disappears. See the attached video. I'm just doing a cmd Z between each to get them back. What am I doing wrong?
