From what I can see, there isn't currently an inbuilt way to build a book cover in publisher? I've completed all of the content of my book, but now need to work out how create the cover in a way that could be adjusted if required. Is the easiest approach to duplicate a master, then change the dimensions to allow for the spine in the centre, adjusting the margins location and design from there? -
Here are some experimental book covers which I made a while back – after reading the last book in Neal Asher’s very good “Transformation” series – and rediscovered in a recent housekeeping exercise. They’re all basic – just me playing around with ideas – but I thought I’d share them as I haven’t shared any new stuff for a while. All are variations on the same book title in different genres: “Acid Punk”; 2 x “Basic Sci-Fi”; “Olde Worlde”; and “Standard Thriller”. (Reader’s of Neal’s books may get where the title and some of the imagery of my covers come from.)

Just wanted to share my recent experience. I've just laid out a full 250-page book in APu and overall it has been excellent to work with. I'm not a highly experienced graphics guy though I have done two or three books previously in InDesign. While acknowledging the advice not to work on important jobs in the beta, I couldn't resist the urge not to spend the money on an ID subscription again and also to give this software a proper go. The only significant headache I had was some instability when files got too big (about 30MB) so I ended up splitting the task into three parts and merging the PDFs at the end. This had obvious implications for the table of contents but it wasn't too onerous. Working with the smaller files there were no crash issues at all. My book wasn't overly complex though it includes quite a number of illustrations and a few tables. Import was from MS Word, with which I found it easier to simply copy and paste text across rather than importing the .docx file (that function was added about halfway through this project). Working with the basic design elements, with styles, text flow and so on was really a breeze. The interface is slick and much nicer to work with than Indesign. One thing I missed was anchors/cross-references, which I'm sure will arrive at some point so I no longer have to manually update references to other pages, but again this was a small issue. All in all I can't wait for the full release. Thanks team!

Hi I am used to using PagePlus 9 and use the book feature to stitch together many articles with photos from different authors and sources to make a school publication which is photo rich and can run to 90 pages plus at times. The articles arrive randomly over time and the ability to create chapters and then re-order and re-index is invaluable. Is the chapter feature available on Infinity Publisher? -
Hi, I have a simple question. I am trying to set up a picture book in the Affinity Publisher Beta edition. I want to make a text box on several of the pages that are fixed and always placed in the same place on the page. This is important since the text in the book must be placed the same way on all pages. I have created a text box, placed it as desired and tried to copy this text box into the next pages - but the result is that a new text box pops up at a random place on the page. Is there any easy way to create a fixed template for where the text on the page should be placed? Thanks in advance. -
After poking around thoroughly in Publisher, I did not see one feature that I find incredibly handy in ID - creating 'books'. I saw another thread where someone suggested using Publisher's 'Sections' as a way to handle longer documents, though I'm not sure this is the way to go and keep the program running smoothly. ID handles books by creating a 'container' into which you can add or remove other ID files as 'sections' - allowing you to rearrange each as needed, add/remove pages inside each and automatically updating page numbers as you shift things around. You can even tell the 'book' that all section's styles should be children of 1 master style, allowing you to only have to update a style once to populate it across all sections. There is a longish publication I work on each year that I find easiest to wrangle by creating it as a 'book' instead of a 100+ page file. I'm not 100% sure I'd want to attempt this same publication in Publisher without some way to better manage these sections. I'm not saying Affinity should recreate what Adobe has done - I am suggesting they could add this feature and have it work even better than Adobe's does. :-) -
I have a book that I want to layout. It has the usual beginning pages that include a TOC. Then I have three sections, each with over a dozen short chapters. The end has a glossary, etc. I am thinking of doing three separate AP files and using the Section feature for each chapter. After outputting the final PDFs, I would have to merge them for the printer. I have used Scrivener to write the book and would probably make changes there and then copy the text to AP. In AP I will add a few images which can't, of course, be anchored to the text flow yet. So I am wondering if this is a good approach, given that it is necessary in the first version of AP to do text flow and image placement within the text manually. Is there a better way? I have done several chapters with images to work out a template, design and other aspects. -
I've been working on how to create book covers that imitate those of the pulpy paperbacks of years past. The idea was to work on a method that others could use as a viable - and so necessarily cheap - option for the self and Indie publishing market. I had been making do with an old version of Photoshop Elements that came with my Bamboo Fun & Touch tablet but decided to take the plunge and try Affinity Photo when I got a new computer, and that turned out to be a very good decision. So... I start off in a program nobody likes to mention - Poser. I'm not too fussy about render settings as so much is changed in post, what matters is the figure, the posing, and the lighting. The result is then opened in Affinity Photo, where I start with some adjustment layers (highlights/shadows, brightness/contrast, colour balance), along with a plug-in from Topaz called Simplicity. This result is then saved out and opened up in a paint program called Art Rage and then attacked with an oil brush and knife to leave me with a faux painting. In Affinity Photo, I've been building some book cover templates and the faux painting is introduced there, with some wear and tear added for a display version. The two designs I've posted here were both based on Mike Shayne covers (the first is one I've seen copied by other publishers, the second is a bit of a classic - enough for someone to have created a font based on it). For very simple designs like this - ie a single figure with one or two props, and also assuming a cover design template is used, then the production time can be between 2-3hrs. I believe that someone more skilled than myself can probably do both a better job of it and at a faster time but even at my speed, I think this could mean a low enough cost for the target market. I don't think I'm ever going to be sufficiently happy with my own efforts to enter that market myself (or, to be honest, with enough free time), so I would like to encourage others to have a go themselves.

Oh boy, I have so been looking forward to this app finally being available! I can't install the beta until tomorrow to experiment and the videos at this stage don't mention it, but can we place imported long text and have it flow to (ideally auto-inserted) 'next pages' until all of it is placed? I'd hate to have to produce a 400-page book by drawing and linking each text box, page by page. Fingers crossed ... -

Just wondering if the books for affinity were worth the buy. I'm sure it has content, but how much? I'm somewhat of a novice to this stuff I.E I'm cutting my teeth on Affinity.Never used A.I or photoshop.So how Indepth are the books? Does it just touch on each tool/settings or does it go in deep on each one?I want to know what everything does and why.Does this book suit my needs in that dept? PS ive watch a ton of vids on affinity and it's hard to find good vids that explain more than the basics.alot of them seem more like that are just showing what they create instead of a true tut on the subject.The affinity vids on their site touch on things but don't really go into the blueprints of each tool and why it does what it does and the need for it. -
Been working with one of my oldest friends on this one - children book, which is something I've done in the past at a student level but always fancied doing something pro - I realised my normal ragged comic-esque style would look a little out of place so I tried to come up with a different kind of style for this one - I kind of started off with my first Affinity Designer dabblings and let it snowball from there, I've used photographs of local wood textures to create most of the art - we are just coming to the end of the book now, just 3 or 4 pages off and then Aron, my poet extraordinaire, partner in crime is gonna start fishing to get it published - I'm all pretty new to this, and would really appreciate any advice from anyone on the forum on getting a publishing deal rather than self publishing. Also, I've been dragging it out so that I'd be able to do the print ready layouts in Publisher but it's looking like I'll have to do this in InDesign CS5 - nay mind maybe we'll have Publisher for the next book in the series? --- THE TREE IN THE SKY ---

I have a question regarding book. I think I´ve found a small mistake. In tutorial on page 167 the high pass filter is added, but this does not affect the Inpainting layer. The High pass should be independent above Inpainting and Pixel layer, where we drawn water. Am I right?

The project is finally done. For the past 13 weeks I’ve been working on a gaming magazine while at SAE. The magazine deals with gaming but unlike other magazines where they talk about news and reviews TossUp talks about in-depth gaming information such as what works, what dose not, fail within games, game mechanics and more. I've been playing around with a different style of book cover today and came up with the two attached covers. It's the same sort of style on each cover but they are for very different genres. (Both the books and their authors are completely fictional.) Does anyone have any constructive comments, suggestions or criticisms? Too much or too little grit? Do the typefaces work? Are the colours okay? Too much or too little going on? What would you have done differently? I'm not sure if I'll be taking these any further but it would be nice to hear good feedback.

Hi, I recently bought affinity photo and designer and I absolutly love those apps. My mother is recently on the verge of completing her first book from a series that will be published. During my work on her book we noticed that it would be really helpful if there where preset document sizes of the most common print sizes for example 8,5inch x 5,5inch is a common create space book size and also the book size my mother went for. Also what would be helpful is to implement industry standard margins and bleeds for those templates so all a user would have to do is open a preset and would have a print ready format with bleed and margins all correct in place. There are much more of common book sizes and there missing as presets, so please add them in the next update. sencirily David

Hi everyone, I've just uploaded a 90 page guide covering the absolute basics of Affinity Photo. If you go here https://theeagerlearner.com/ and subscribe you can download it along with the photos used in the chapters so you can follow along. This guide could be described as the written equivalent of my Affinity Photo: 5 steps to Better Photos course over at udemy. Actually it's the first chapters of a larger book I'm writing which will be the broad equivalent of the Affinity Photo: Solid Foundations course, also at Udemy. But it will be slightly different. I may not cover all the topics from the video course but I will be including written material about using the develop persona to process RAW files, for example. So why do this? Well, I'm aiming to sell the final book and I want people to have a clear idea of what to expect. I also think that if you are going to give something for free as a taster, you should give something good that's going to be of real use to people. It also gives you a chance to give any feedback to me here so I can match the final book to peoples hopes and wishes. Here are some more book covers under the same theme as last time: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/43157-various-themed-book-covers/ The general idea of each books is: * Natural Born Keepers - A guide to bee-keeping for the mature person; * Bounder - Gritty tale of one man's obsessive control and extra-marital affairs; * Falling - A community's memories of a well-loved dead friend; * Fresh Start - A young woman finds a new life away from her dysfunctional family. The amount of work that was needed for each cover varied - a bit of basic compositing and some "artistic" messing around here and there - but there wasn't a massive amount done in total. Like the previous bunch, they're all experimental throw-away stuff, but if anyone has any suggestions for improvements I'd be happy to hear about them.

For a bit of fun at the weekend I thought I'd make some basic book covers, all set within an overall main theme but with each as its own story and genre. I've tried to match each cover with that which can be seen on existing books with the same sort of story/genre. The stories are (vaguely), in no particular order: * Animal Farm 2 - Intrigue and revenge behind the pig arks; * Comes Around - A gritty tale of abuse, betrayal and consequences; * It's a Policeman's Lot - A whimsical story of a "Bobby on the Beat"; * Stealing Henry - A thriller where a cruel father tries to kidnap his son; * Bartleby's Wake - A collection of awful poems by a grizzled old farmer; * Gin Galore - A hapless dreamer tries his hand at being an artisan distiller. Listeners of a certain long-running UK radio drama might be able to guess the overall theme (particularly from the authors' names). They're all silly throw-away experiments - just a few hours of messing around so there are probably lots of problems with each - but if anyone has any suggestions or comments I'd be happy to hear them.
