  1. For a bit of fun at the weekend I thought I'd make some basic book covers, all set within an overall main theme but with each as its own story and genre. I've tried to match each cover with that which can be seen on existing books with the same sort of story/genre. The stories are (vaguely), in no particular order: * Animal Farm 2 - Intrigue and revenge behind the pig arks; * Comes Around - A gritty tale of abuse, betrayal and consequences; * It's a Policeman's Lot - A whimsical story of a "Bobby on the Beat"; * Stealing Henry - A thriller where a cruel father tries to kidnap his son; * Bartleby's Wake - A collection of awful poems by a grizzled old farmer; * Gin Galore - A hapless dreamer tries his hand at being an artisan distiller. Listeners of a certain long-running UK radio drama might be able to guess the overall theme (particularly from the authors' names). They're all silly throw-away experiments - just a few hours of messing around so there are probably lots of problems with each - but if anyone has any suggestions or comments I'd be happy to hear them.
  2. Hello everyone. This is my first post on the forum so I thought I'd introduce myself by way of attaching a simple book cover that I've been experimenting with. I know it's pretty basic stuff but I'm still finding my way around. No external images were used, everything was drawn in Affinity Designer. (My inspiration came from: https://raru.co.za/books/4126333-poseidons-wake-alastair-reynolds-paperback ) I've only been using AD for a week or so - mostly just a few hours here and there when I get the time - but I'm very impressed with the features and usability so far. I made the cover as a throwaway experiment but if anyone has any suggestions about improvements - fonts, colours, lighting, whatever - then I'd be happy to learn. I know the "alastair reynolds" font isn't right but I can't find the correct font - I think it's supposed to be Helvetica Light - for free. Can anyone give me a link to a better free font? I'm not entirely happy with the background. If anyone can point me in the direction of a good tutorial for this kind of thing - merged gradients and lighting - that would be great. If I get some good suggestions then I might do an updated version and post it here. Edit: I've attached a smaller image so it can be seen more easily.
  3. Hello fellow forumers, Is there a user guide or manual for Affinity at the moment? Whilst I understand that: It's important you explore on your own, that way any bugs have a slightly higher chance of being found, and; This is in Beta, and may not be fully complete/functions can change/the project could be scrapped (although I hope not); I would absolutely love some kind of link to a reference guide. I mostly work in a convenience store, and like reading up on things during my breaks to then come home to actually try them. I am most able to maximise my time in this way. I have looked & looked but couldn't find anything of the sort. Is there such a thing at this point in time? Or will this become a feature before the program gets its launch? I remain, iPrune
  4. So... After a few trials and errors, I have the 3rd proof back from the printers. Ohhh My Strawberry Monkey started a little while back as single comic strips but felt it wasn't the right direction. So its turned into a Children's book (under 5's) it's aimed at pre-schoolers. There is so much more to the story and I'm sure I'll tell it one day. I wrote and put the book together in Affinity Designer and yes I'm looking forward to publisher, which no doubt would've helped but it worked. Anyway, the next step is to send a copy to a few publishers and I'm also considering self-publishing. There will also be a few copies available, so you lucky people get to experience the first, (hopefully) in a series of many. So if you've got young kids and would like a copy leave a comment...Thinking of you Matt P and Chris B... (Is this also the first Children's book to come out of Designer?) Allan
  5. Hi, I've just bought Affinity Photo yesterday (mainly to jump off the Adobe subscription bandwagon). I'm considering to buy a new "laptop" - in quotes, because the Surface Book tingles my fancy by far the most. I'm peeking for the smalles model, the i5 with 128GB SSD (96GB free as I've seen in a electro market yesterday) with no dedicated GPU, but comes with the integrated Intel HD Graphics 520. The display has a resolution of 3000x2000. I wonder if two things would work: - does Affinity Photo it scale nicely? I've heard about problems with Windows software who did not scale good. - does Affinity Photo use a dedicated GPU that much, that it would make no sense to buy such a device? I would wonder about the latter one as a lot of Apple MacBooks also come with integrated GPUs (even though, they do use the faster IRIS graphics). Maybe someone here uses a Surface Book with this configuration with Affinity Photo and could give me a hint. Many thanks in advance! Ciao Dennis
  6. Hello all, Just recently I was creating line art for a request from one of my commissioners (in affinity of course), I completed a fair amount, and saved regularly during creating it, until my laptop completely crashed that is. I was forced to turn it off by holding the power button until it had completely shut down. I wasn't too worried about losing my work because I'd just saved about one minute or so prior to it crashing. However, when I turned my laptop on again, and then tried to access the file, apparently affinity didn't support the file type? I checked in the properties and it was correct, named "optrix.afdesign", and here I also noticed that the size (and the size on the disk) was 0 bytes, currently I don't know if this is just an error showing the size or it is literally 0 bytes and I've lost all of my work. I definitely wasn't putting my laptop under any stress, the afd. file only contained my line art and 3 other images I was using as references. And yes, it's only this file that can't open, I believe all of my previously created files can. I've attached the file itself just in case, and I can show you screenshots of anything you need. Since this time I've downloaded and reinstalled the release candidate affinity again. Even if no one can help, could you please respond if you've had the same; or a similar issue (my laptop is a Surface Book and I solely used a Bluetooth mouse, not the pen). Thank you for your time. P.S Just when trying to attach the file apparently no file was selected. I've lost it haven't I.
  7. I’ve created a thriller (book) trailer, using aphoto and imovie. Thank you for watching :) Text means something like: Opfer - Victim Messer - Knife Deep in the forest the horror lurks and will not let you go ... at night it comes to life and calls for tribute … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3cGMNDKbVo
  8. I have been working on a cover design in Affinity Designer and I was curious as to how publishers like to receive files. Do I send the native Affinity file or a PDF or something else? I ask because the set up is different then it has been in the past. The people writing the book are doing the work in Word instead of a layout program for an example. I would love to know what experiences others have had in this area. When I self published by first book with InDesign (just using a basic laser printer) I would export the interior as a PDF and then print the cover straight out of InDesign. Since the cover is just one page (of course) I figured Affinity could handle that job.
  9. Need your help;-) which version is more sinister, more scary? It should be a book cover (Thriller). Thank you for your opinions, comments … (the subtle differences can be found in the face)

  11. Hi! My name is Enrique Figueroa, I'm a professional graphic designer. I've started to use Affinity Designer recently and I love it!. I have some expertise in character design, mascot design and such... I began to write a book about cartoon character design in Adobe Illustrator a few months ago... but it happens that I don't use Illustrator that much anymore (I hate, hate the subscription thing). So I thought that it would be a good idea to re-write the whole book for Affinity Designer only. The book is oriented towards people that would like to give life to their ideas, without the pain of going all the way trough DaVinci's academy... the learning method is very simple, for beginners and advanced users alike. The goal is to help you in the making of all kind of characters within a month or two, so you can even make money out of them (T-Shirt design, vector stock selling, freelance works, etc). Its heavy focused on styling and commercial appealing. I still don't know in which formats will be released. For now I would really, really appreciate your feedback on this project. It appeals to you?, Would you buy it?, how much would you pay for it?, is this what you need?... any opinion is welcome, my mind is open. You can ask whatever you want too. I have attached a couple of my drawings just to give you an example of the simplicity and look of the characters for this first module (these ones won't be in the book, but they can give you a small idea). I love more and more AD and I think It has great potential as a learning tool. Thanks in advance, Enrique Figueroa

  13. Hello everybody. I share you my last project. i work in one printing house, and all of my notepads are full ! and you know, how cost one moleskine ! So I got the cheaper idea : create and print for myself at lowest prize ! I choose 10x15mm. Pantone 012, 032, 072U. For the paper i take 320 Rives textured for the cover and inside 150 Offset paper ! i also have the idea to create hole for my business cards ( i lose them every time !) on the last pages ! I use Affinity Designer to create it ! i use the last beta for the Pantone support. I wanted to have best CMYK reproduction, because my Digital press can make a conversion (better dan if AD make the conversion). Thanks for watching ! and thank for sharing your opinion ! Clém
  14. Thought I would share a lovely little project I have been working on this last couple of weeks. Two 30page page educational books for UK charity Epilepsy Action. The story has been adapted for both a Dad and mum version. To be published in hard form in 2016 also to be released as a digital download sometime before Christmas. Artwork had to adhere to many readability standards and fonts had to follow NHS guidelines for accessibility. All illustration was undertaken in Affinity Designer (of course) and page layout in InDesign (let change that soon hey, Serif Devs).
  15. I want to use Affinity Photo to design paperback book covers. Because many elements of my book covers use standard fonts and positioning. The standard elements are simple text and boxes (author name, publisher and price info, box for back cover text, white box for bar code) and some guides for spine, margins, and bleed. I would like to create a template with these standard elements. The challenge is that the page count differs for each book. The page count affects the spine width, which in turn affects the x positions of the front cover elements. I could move the text and guides manually, but anything I do manually is a nuisance and prone to error. Until now I have used InDesign for book covers. My InDesign book cover template uses a spread with three pages: back, spine, and front. The front cover page is positioned relative to the spine’s right edge. The front cover elements are positioned relative to the front cover page. So if I adjust the spine width, the front cover moves over to make room, and all of the front cover elements and guides move with the page. Is there a way to do something similar in Affinity Photo? Or is Affinity Designer a better choice? Or a combination?
  16. My latest project with AP, the book cover for the thriller (novel) „Die Heilanstalt“ by the german author Simon Geraedts. The cover will be featured in the new edition. It's just great to create book covers with AP :) Thanks to the developers ... http://b-bertuleit.de/die-heilanstalt/
