  1. In Affinity Photo 1.5.2 applying curves to a previously rotated layer and afterwards merging the mask with this layer creates an unintended blur (cf. attached screenshots and AP file). Interestingly, the effect does not happen if the layers are merged with "Merge Visible". Could be a bug. (The "Force Pixel Alignment" setting was turned on.) Steps to reproduce behaviour: Duplicate layer and rotate (eg. by 15°) Apply curve Merge mask with layer ("Merge Selected") Kind regards, Anitram test_NEU.afphoto
  2. I am wondering can I do a motion blur just like in PS choose the motion blur center, make the effect like the motion blur in z axis. Cause seems I can only adjust the motion blur in x and y axis. Please check the attached file to see what I mean.
  3. I'm trying to emulate one of my old PSP9 tricks for making fine lines more readable: one of your contributors suggested using Affinity Photo's Maximum and Minimum Blur filters to emulate PSP's Erode and Dilate. Using the split-screen preview, I see a useful degree of black-line dilation at blur levels between 0.5 and 1.9 pixels. However, when I click Apply, the image reverts to its original appearance. Only when I set the blur to greater than 2 pixels will the filter effect commit with the Apply button. Is there something wrong with this - and is this filter really the best way for me to emulate PSP's 'Erode' effect? Thanks, Alan Affinity Photo
  4. Is there a way to prevent Photo from pixelating my image while dragging layers? I'm guessing it's a performance related feature, but I want to turn it off so that I can always keep a sharp eye on things at all times. When I say pixelating, I mean that it degrades in quality while I am dragging. But, after I release the mouse, it renders at full quality again. Also, it only seems to happen in certain situations. Like, only certain zoom levels and sometimes only certain layers are affected.
  5. hi there, does anybody have a tipp how to simulate a depth of focus for one layer? I do have two layers. 1) A Background with a slighlty blur feeling 2) extracted people in front I would like to have the people beeing more embedded into the background. currently they stand out as they are more sharp. I thought of adding a subtile blur to the edge of the "people" photo to simulate a natural depth of a focus. But I don't know how to do it in a easy and natural looking way. Or any other idea? Thanks! Thomas
  6. (Picture attached) I selected the subject (which is a person), and blurred out the the background. However, when I blur out the background surrounding the subject, another surrounding blurred marks appears on edges of the subject outside of the selection, which I do not like. I want to get rid of these marks around edges in order to make the subject look sharper.
  7. Sorry guys this may be super amateurish, but hey I'm an amateur. I want to blur the background from an image/picture to focus on one particular image. How is this accomplished? I appreciate the consideration and patience.
  8. Hi There, I have been using Photo for a while now.. Every single time I open a RAW photo and develop it appears to be blurry and unsharp. I am 100% sure that the photo is sharp, when I go to the export screen it appears even more blurry and unsharp. Exported images are sharp tho. But at this point I feel like I cannot be sure that it is indeed sharp inside Affinity Photo. Is this problem familiar and is there a fix for this? Sincerely, Roel
  9. Hi, I have a big picture (11220px x 25393px 300 dpi) for a roll-up made with Designer, and I would like to export as picture (JPG for instance). But when I click on export or rasterize my laptop go crazy.. :-) it overheats and nothing happens! Can you help me I Attach the file but I think there is some problem with large images Thank you sfondo roll-up.afphoto
  10. I find there's zero difference in the effect of the Blurring tool whether I set the tool's opacity to 1% or 100%. Similar lack of adjustability is experienced in the Sharpening tool, although I do like that it's hard to grossly oversharpen to the point ugliness with that tool. Can the opacity sliders on all tools be improved to provide control so that when I set opacity of a tool to a percentage, it actually applies that effect by that percentage?
  11. I want to reduce the graininess in a photo taken in low light. Photoshop Elements has a 'Surface Blur' filter that works well for this, blurring the image while preserving edges. Do any of the filters offered on the 'Filters > Blur' submenu in Affinity Photo do the same thing under a different name, or is there an alternative noise reduction method I could use?
  12. Hi All, I would like to use Affinity Photo to create some nice low ploy art. In other software packages you draw some triangles and apply an average blur. In attached image I have started to draw some triangles using the pen tool and grouped them above the image. Please can someone help and advice if there is a way to apply a blur effect on the entire group which will affect the image underneath it. (Not the pen border). Any help is much appreciated! Thank you.
  13. It would be nice to have a blur filter with variable kernel size based on a BW layer or a mask. This is in particular useful when a depth map is available. This is for example the case when post processing CG. In some cases it is also quit easy to generate an approximate depth map based on some photography, either using some mesh or a stereo pairs.
  14. Good evening, I've noticed a bug when using the clone tool which produce a blurred result. Here's how to reproduce: Open an image (make sure it's a pixel layer) Choose the Clone Tool Set it to "Current Layer" mode Set a source. If you look closely to the clone preview, you should notice that the previewed result is more or less blurred depending the mouse position. Start cloning. The result will be blurred and not 100% reflecting the source. Second test: Change the clone tool mode to "Current Layer & Below" Preview and result are both perfect. Check out this example it's zoomed-in in purpose:
  15. As demostrated by the image below (three rectangles, two of them blurred, and four pixel brush dots with soft edges) Affinity designer and Affinity photo handle transparency and blending in a mathematically erroneous manner. It is wrong because blended areas are darker than any of the blended colors. Here is a friendly video by MinutePhysics that explains what I think is going on and how to fix it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKnqECcg6Gw
  16. Would love to see a feature where we can target a blur on an edge only. Say I have a fill with some painting in it and maybe some noise applied, if I'd like the edge to be soft and apply a blur to it the whole things blurs, losing any painting detail and noise... be cool to just be able to blur the shapes edge without the contents getting blurred. Would be nice to have a slider and preview. Maybe there is already a way to do this? Any ideas? Again, a boy can dream. :D
  17. Hi to everyone from this new user! I'm an old Photoshop user hoping to do all that I did there and more in AP. I am making masked TIFFs out of some contoured white objects that were photographed on a white background. I want to maintain the original shadow but make it blend to whatever paper it will be printed on. I have traced one contour of just the object and another one that includes the shadow and used each as masks on duplicates of the image. I gave the layer with the shadow a 70% opacity but I want the outer pixels to fade outwards to 0%. I thought using Feather and deleting the selection would do it but it does not select evenly. Grow selects evenly but deleting that just creates a visible cut. Any ideas that do not include manually going around the objects with the Background Erase tool? I appreciate any help!
  18. Good day, I am trying to export my logo to jpg, for the use of signature at Mac Mail. But every time I export it, it becomes blur. Please see the image attached. Shouldn't this just be the simplest task?! What do I do wrong? B This question might have been asked countless times. I'm sorry for that, I just can't find the right answer. Mavu Logo signature .afdesign
  19. How do I do this? I've been messing around for a while and I can't figure it out. Help would be appreciated!
  20. Beginner here, and loving Affinity. See attachment -- When I add a gaussian blur it goes past the mask. I like the part around the letters which creates a glow, but not the part at the edges of the document. Best way to clear the border out? thanks! banner-1c.afphoto
  21. Affinity Photo 1.3.4 (App Store build). I was experimenting with creating a simple high pass effect: Open image Place an Invert adjustment on top Set the blend mode of the Invert Adjustment Layer to Linear Light and Alpha to 50%. As expected, everything is 50% gray. At this point, lowpass filtering the top layer in any way (blurring, median etc.) should theoretically produce a high pass filter effect (it works fine when doing this with a duplicate of the base layer). I tried to do it using only the Adjustment Layer and no duplicate of the base layer. My first attempt was the blur option in the layer styles. With or without "Preserve Alpha" on, this did not have any effect whatsoever. I then created a Gaussian Blur filter layer and nested it inside the Invert Adjustment Layer. With "Preserve Alpha" on, this does not have any effect either. With "Preserve Alpha" on, however, this leads to the edges of the tiles of the memory manager becoming softened (i.e. each tile's alpha gets blurred individually). The image itself is not being blurred at all. See attached Screenshot. I'm not sure which parts of this are by design and which parts are bugs. Should applying blur to an Adjustment Layer, either as a Layer Style or as a nested filter layer, theoretically lead to the adjustment being applied to a copy of the original image, then blurred, and then blended with the original? That's what I would intuitively have expected to happen. If not, maybe the Blur layer style should be disabled for Adjustment layers and Adjustment Layers should not allow Filter Layers to be nested inside of them, because it's kind of confusing if they have no effect.
  22. hi, after using depth of field blur in affinity photo, my image showed lines and squares and some tiny dots. large squares as seen in the affinity u.i. (see .png screenshot); small squares after exporting the file as .jpg (see .jpg attachment). i saved the .afphoto-file, but that's over 100 mb, so i can't upload it here. is this a bug or am i doing something wrong? jan van de ven trying to reproduce the problem, i discovered that lines, squares and dots only appear when using the clarity slider of the depth of field options.
  23. Hi, I just tested installed today affinity from the app store and tested the radial and zoom blur and it has seriously ugly results. It seems that affinity is doing blur effects downsampled which is logical for preview but in the final result it should process the whole picture and not use only the proxy thumbnail which makes the artefacts. Also if the effect run on GPU they feel little slow. I have only one layer and the image is 3k x 2k the preview should be much faster on GPU, We do game development and we use blur filters in real-time 60fps on mobile on retina displays... The seems little bit slow in comparison. My Mac Book is Apple MacBook Pro 15-Inch Retina Display (2014) the first photo is from affinity the second one is from photoshop
  24. I've been focusing on shaing and coloring techniques in Affinity Designer lately. With this Blue Cobalt Shot Glass, I used gaussian blur, layer blending modes (Color Burn and Average) and opacity to acheive the effect that I was looking for. What methods would you use? UPDATE 3/15/2015 Thank you for all of the great input. I'm including the following to this post: The original image I used for inspiration My .afdesign file so you can see the layers Further Explanation (What I was trying to acheive) My goal was to make this illustration as "real" as possible. I've been expirementing with Gaussian blur, gradients, blending modes and opacity to acheive realistic highlights and shading. blue_cobalt_glass_RE.afdesign
  25. Hey As an amateur photographer, I would love to suggest some options for the develop persona, that would make it really cool and easy to use for any sort of photographer. May I suggest (these features I have seen in other apps, but not many tbh) Some brushes such as a blur and soften and a sharpen brush, along with dark, lighten and saturate and desaturate. I have suggested these before but I really would love them and I think lots of other people will too. May I also suggest two slider options. slider for making the blues either stronger and darker or weaker and lighter, as well as one for greens and browns. I think these sliders would be so awesome and useful for me as an aspiring landscape photographer. Maybe you've had some ideas from these ideas, suggest them because as a user I say "the more features the better, just hide the complex ones, but make sure they're within one click. All this will result in a simplistic UI and beautiful options" Kind Regards GEEKIO (Pronounced: GEEK-IE-O)
