  1. Fun with strokes and blending modes :)
  2. Hi, I really like affinity photo, I find it easier to us then photoshop but there are a few things I can'tseem to figure out. I am learning different techniques for editing black and white photos. It seems via youtube that in photoshop multiple gradients can be added to one mask. If I try to us the gradient tool on a mask on a selection that I have made in affinity I can only us 1 gradient. So if I wanted to have a gradient masking out an adjustment at the bottom and at the top I can't seem to do this, it just resets to the gradient that I just put down and I lose the previous one. If this makes sense to anyone, is there a way to add multiple gradients to 1 mask? cheers, Jason
  3. hi i am new to Afinity photo and want to switch form cs6. i saw some of the viedio's . this question has perhaps been asked before and i do apologise of i am asking the same question. i open an image ready to process and want to bring in another image of mine as a layer so that i can use one of the layer blending modes.. is this possible in Photo?
  4. I'm using pixel layer filled with solid color with "soft light" blending mode to add some coloring. How could I do the same thing using adjustment layer? So I could save it as 3D LUT. I've attached Village.afphoto as an example. Village.afphoto
  5. Is there an equivalent to linear burn amongst the layer blending options? Specifically, I'm looking for something that Wikipedia describes as:
  6. I'm in the process of evaluating Affinity Designer as a tool for combining multiple versions of the same photograph into a single deep image. I've been using this technique for several years using a combination of several applications, and I'm hoping AD may make the step of "squishing" all of these photos together a bit easier. As I am brand new to AD, I'm running into a problem working with multiple layers that I'm currently attributing to the ignorance associated with pilot error. :-) I'm working with 20mp images and lay down the first 5,472 x 3,648 TIFF image in the background layer. This image is basically full frame with no transparency. I then drop in the second image, which is also 5,472 x 3,648, but this image contains only those items which are in focus for that layer — so much of the TIFF is transparent, with the edges around the opaque objects feathered to be gradually blended into the background image. The net effect is to overlay objects in the background, with those in this second layer. (As a side note, this TIFF with transparency is created using Apple's Aperture and Lemke Software's GraphicConverter). However, when I drop the second image into Affinity Designer, the feathered edges that are supposed to blend into the background appear as very prominent gray lines when Opacity is set to 100% and the blending mode is set to Normal. This is different than what I see in other apps, so I'm sure I'm missing something when adding layers in AD. I've attached three image to illustrate what I'm seeing. The first shows a portion of a TIFF with transparency where the edges of the devil figure are feathered into the transparent background. The second shows how this same cropped image appears in AD, and the third is the result of laying this layer over the background, where what should be a completely undetectable transition is very obvious. Layer (in Preview).tiff Layer (in AD).tiff Combined Layers.tiff As I said, this works as I would expect in other apps, so I'm curious about what I'm doing wrong within Affinity Designer. Thanks!!
  7. I keep loading new betas hoping for some movement on these issues but as time moves on it looks like Photo isn't going to replace PS for me anytime soon. I have mentioned them early on in feature requests and bugs as appropriate. I admit I haven't had time to follow all the progress and I may well have missed something. If so great, please let me know how to do it and I'll be happy. I know Dan Margulis evokes polarized opinions but usually in some fairly restricted domains. There are a ton of useful workflows in Professional Photoshop and Photoshop LAB Color that depend on the channel-specific blend-if sliders in the PS layer options dialog. If you do colour correction using those workflows blend-if can be the difference between spending minutes or hours on a correction. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't see these in Photo. The layer blending dialog in Photo is as far as I can tell completely ignorant of colour channels and therefore virtually useless for me. The other thing that prevents me from doing a full correction, not a blocker but such an impediment that it's not worth the effort, is that I can't see how to apply e.g. a curves modification to a mask channel. Again if I just haven't found it, please let me know. I can use adjustments to prepare a mask based on e.g. the CMYK yellow or black. But it's hard to tweak in place. In PS I can apply curves to anything I can see - maybe not as an adjustment layer but I can still do that. I like everything as an adjustment layer but if there's no immediate application of adjustments I need to be able to apply them to any pixel layer - including masks. Photo seems like a great bitmap editor, great for collage work - splicing existing photos etc. But PS is still the only game in town for serious colour correction and unfortunately that's what I need to do. Most of the rest I can already do in Designer. Also I still can't believe that we have a Master curve in Lab mode - and it's the default. That just doesn't make any sense. Doesn't make much sense in CMYK either (because neutrals don't have the same value across all channels) and should be avoided in RGB (because master adjustments can shift colours) but that's another battle. So best wishes for Photo but it's not much use for me right now. Also congrats on the Apple Design Award for Designer! You guys really do deserve it!
  8. I've been focusing on shaing and coloring techniques in Affinity Designer lately. With this Blue Cobalt Shot Glass, I used gaussian blur, layer blending modes (Color Burn and Average) and opacity to acheive the effect that I was looking for. What methods would you use? UPDATE 3/15/2015 Thank you for all of the great input. I'm including the following to this post: The original image I used for inspiration My .afdesign file so you can see the layers Further Explanation (What I was trying to acheive) My goal was to make this illustration as "real" as possible. I've been expirementing with Gaussian blur, gradients, blending modes and opacity to acheive realistic highlights and shading. blue_cobalt_glass_RE.afdesign
  9. I have recently downloaded the affinity photo beta. I have played a little with it and it does seem to be a very good program with great potential with all the user support. I'm a photographer that uses lightroom 5 for 95% of editing. I have tried to understand CS6 and have learned a little bit of the program but find it a complicated and extremely powerful program. Since this is a new program and I don't use Affinity Designer I am having difficulty understanding how to use the layers and masks in this program. I'm sure they work in a similar fashion but things are laid out in a different manner I find. If you know how to use layers, masks, and the tools that affinity photo has can people start to post some short tutorials here please. Would be great help. I'm sure the affinity crew is working hard at creating some but think they are likely very busy fixing and adding features to the program that simply learning how to use the features for newcomers is being overlooked. Things I would like to know: 1. how the layers work 2. how the masks work 3. how to create a layer-mask and then be able to "hide" or "reveal" part of that mask by using a brush and a black or white swatch what all the tools do down the left side of the screen. I know I can play with them but I can't seem to get some of them to work so I don't know what they do... 4. the basic navigation of the UI, since it's new to me Would appreciate the help and hopefully people can post little youtube videos right in this thread that people could search and find... cheers, Jason
