  1. The more I use this software the more I like it!! :D One silly thing - you can create multiple art boards but you can only print them one by one? The PDF workaround is ok but.... I can see how printing all art boards to one page would work for very small illustration comps but not for simply printing out A4 or letter size concepts to present.
  2. I've searched this forum and I haven't seen anyone requesting the artboard feature, for Affinity Photo. It's not a deal breaker feature, but it's really nice to have. My usage would be for mockups, I often take photos of blank paper packaging in several angles and it's convenient to group them all inside the same file. Thanks! EDIT: Actually, I've just stumbled upon this very feature inside Affinity Photo! I've done it by creating a new iPad document and then duplicating the default artboard. However I can't see any way to add extra artboards through the menus, nor I see a way to convert a normal photo/image into a artboard. There's nothing in the help system about this either. I guess this is now a Questions & Feedback topic, but I can't move or delete this topic by myself. A little help here please? Thanks again!
  3. Is there any way of reproducing the layout of an artboard so that I can produce a 24 page document without having to set up the margins and guides on each artboard?
  4. HI dear affinity dev team, very good job, i dont miss illustrator and sketch at all ;) but what keeps me from working late nite is the bright canvas background. would really love if i can change the white around my artboards to something darker. best, pascal
  5. I noticed that the very useful expressions for sizing and positioning content using the Transform panel only work for pages and not for artboards. Can variables like artboardwidth, artboardheight etc. be added as well? Thanks in advance!
  6. Hi, I just learned from one of the video tutorials, that an artboard can have a color, which is a nice thing to have. I tried it and realized, that it seems, that the color does not extends into the bleed, when exporting the document. Is that so or do I miss a setting? Thanks Sebastian
  7. Hello there, Artboards help in organising stuff, but as soon as you have more than 5-6 artboards, things get hairy. The layers panel might have hundreds of items. Being able to organize content into "Pages", would be a huge time saver. Both for navigating a big document and for editing it. And it does not sound as something complex, from an implementation perspective.
  8. First of all, I think the Constraints feature is excellent, every other design app is missing this feature (except SubForm but it's still in development). Constraints needs to be taken a step further for affinity to really rule the web and app design community. What we need to add is breakpoints for element reflow. Programs like Photoshop and XD still require us to design separate artboards for each breakpoint, and while the constraints-feature is good, it doesn't solve the need for elements in the design to reflow according to the artboard's width. So, while I can make fewer artboards in Affinity, I still need to make at least 3 or 4 to demonstrate to my developers how I want the elements to reflow from 1080p down to mobile. Adobe Edge Reflow came close to tackling this, but it was scrapped and they don't seem to have included it in XD yet. I'm talking about elements on the screen behaving like justified text, so the artboard's width decides wether items will "jump" to the next row below or back to the row above according breakpoints set in the horizontal ruler and min/max widths set in the constraints for each item. I imagine this means constraints need to be set on single elements that can be grouped, then those groups can have constraints added to respect columns (like the Bootstrap grid), and finally the groups can respect overall breakpoint constraints. My mind boggles a bit at how to solve this in the app UI, but I'm sure it's possible.
  9. Hi everyone. I've been using the Windows beta, and I like so far. One thing I don't understand is how to manage the many artboards I generate when doing mockups for a website. I don't know if I am doing something wrong, but I am getting dozens at a given screen size. How am I supposed to keep them together without it being one large area that I have to spend so much time scrolling and it becomes unwieldy? I apologize if this is an obvious question, I don't typically do design work, so all this is new to me.
  10. Not sure if this is a question or a feature request. It may already exist. Sometimes when working with symbols I want to stop and start a new iteration. I'd love if I could duplicate an artboard and the symbols on the original were also duplicated and became independent. As it is, if I duplicate an artboard with symbols and work on the new duplicate, the symbols in the original also change. In other words, symbols are document wide. Would be great if they were artboard wide only -- or at least to have the choice. Is it possible already? Maybe I'm missing something.
  11. I am creating stickers to make a few product samples. I will print on transparent adhesive foils, cut the stickers out and stick them on the boxes. 2 stickers fit on one A4 page, so I created a file with two artboards. When printing, I select "whole document", which seems to produce what I need. But it does not create the cut marks corresponding to the artboards. Instead, it only prints cut marks at the circumference of both items, but not for each of the artboards. This does not make sense to me, because, given I choose to print all artboards and to print cut marks, I would assume that cut marks are printed for each artboard. Analogously to properties like bleeding that are specified for each artboard, I would assume that each artboard also has its cut marks. Attached is a screenshot of the print preview, showing the black cut marks. In red, I sketched the missing cut marks that I need.
  12. I am excited to share with you the official announcement of my new Affinity Designer course on Lynda.com. It been out for a couple of weeks now and just getting around to sharing with those of you who might of missed it. 13. How can i remove the gray border on all artboards Are the following options available? - enable / disable border - change color Thanks BR George
  14. I am starting to see a few posts asking Serif why Publisher hasn't been released yet. After just completing my first BASIC layout project with Designer and Photo it makes sense to me for at least some of the reasons why Publisher hasn't been released. The two currently available apps are still missing some very basic layout tools so Serif needs to get the basics put in those two apps before moving on to the more complex layout software. I wrote a lengthy piece about this in another thread but it was buried one hundred posts down. I just wanted people to be aware of these points so I am starting a new thread so that they can get more exposure. Original post: After doing my first layout project on Affinity I can understand why Serif isn't rushing Publisher out (even though I enjoyed using it for layouts.) There are still a number of basic layout features that need to be added to Designer and Photo to even work well as a basic one page layout software. Why rush out complex layout software before you even have the basics working right? This is the list I have come up with that Affinity should complete before moving to a layout program. - Visible bleeds in the program, not just after exporting the file. There was too much work trying to set up bleeds at a half an inch when I could see an object after it was dragged out into the bleed area. I basically had to draw a half inch box and then drag the object to the size of the box and then delete the box after I no longer needed it. - Adding and editing artboards needs to be done in Photo. If Photo let me edit artboards I could have done my entire book cover layout in Photo (I think) and not had to jump back to Designer each time I needed to make a slight revision. For an example the publisher I was working with said that my book spine needed to be .58" rather then what I previously had it set to which was .5". Such a small adjustment should not require me to go to another app. - I consider text wrap to be a basic tool so this needs to be done without having to rely on a workaround. There is also a feature from InDesign where the text follows along the side an object that I find to be very useful but I can't remember what it is called off the top of my head. - I should be able to select a shape that I want to import an object into. I know there is masking from the layers panel but with InDesign I have gotten used to selecting a shape, selecting place and then having an object get imported in. This object could then show up in the layers panel as a masked item. -The first version of Publisher should include some of the features that InDesign users have been clamoring for over the past several years and never get. The goal is not to just make a clone of InDesign but provide functionality it can't do or can't do well. I think Affinity got off to a good start as a basic layout tool but I really believe that all of these basics need to be done before Publisher comes out. Ideally Publisher should be a solid app right from the first version since so much polishing would have been done to layout tools in Designer and Photo already. This way the focus for Publisher can be placed entirely on things like long document features and ebooks rather then adding layout tools that have been available for decades now (those features should already be in Photo and Designer by release.) Another advantage of placing the focus on Designer and Photo is that people will get comfortable using those programs as solid basic editing apps so when Publisher comes out the transition to the more powerful long document tools will feel more natural since it will be so similar to the programs they already use. PS. I noticed as I was typing this that there is a shortcut for adjusting leading. That is a useful idea. Is anyone else getting this to work? It doesn't work for me. That seems like a much better idea then having to type numbers into a leading box.
  15. Hello! I'm amazed with Affinity on Windows and I'm using it more and more over the Illustrator. One thing makes me wonder for now - is it possible to export artboards as PDF with multiple pages? Tried with preset for print etc., tried with printing to file and nothing worked.
  16. Hello, I love artboards in Designer. I would suggest though an option to enable grid-snapping for artboards, independent of object snapping. I guess most people don't require fine-tuned adjustments of their artboard layout. Currently, it seems I need to enable snapping, only to arrange them, e.g. horizontally or vertically align my artboards. The fact that they snap even to objects in other artboards complicates this further. I apologize if this is already a feature, in which case I'd like to know how to enable it :) Best Regards, John
  17. Hi, Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any information for my problem at the moment. (Vimeo: Affinity Designer - Artboards: Basics) Maybe someone can help me. I’ve set up a Trifold Artboard and would like to know (secret...) how to put one image (big size) on the entire surface of the 3 Artboards (trifold) together. The same for one text (Title) on the 3 artboards (Trifold) Many thanks in advance cago
  18. Is it possible to PNG/JPG export a document with artboards into multiple files, one per artboard?
  19. I often resize artboards to match new variations in content, e.g. adjust artboard height after creating a design version which is bigger or more compact. Would be great if it was possible to quickly adjust the size of the artboard to perfectly match the content.
  20. I noticed this while trying to add a vertical guide on a node's exact position. I pulled the node's X coordinate from the transform panel, but when I pasted the value into a vertical guide I created the guide's value got reset to a negative value and the guide disappeared entirely. I realized that while the coordinated for the actual artboards reset the rulers stayed constant across all of them - so, for example, if there are two 100x100 artboards side by side with a gutter of 50 between them, while a point at the center of the 2nd artboard will read as x=50, to put a guide at that exact point by typing it into the guide manager, it would have to be set at x=200.
  21. Hello, I found something strange. I will made in steps what I done 1) Open New Document 2) Draw something 3) Then I hide AD into taskbar 4) After a while I opened AD (hour or so) and while rolling black screen covering document area appear. It just keep changing sometime is normal, next is black and at last its blinking... When I open next document and new is everything allright, but on document that was with error it remains till exit of it.
  22. I am a complete novice and use Affinity Designer and Photo for odd bits of work here and there. I am currently putting together a programme for a music festival. I started by creating a new Designer document with artboard set to A5 (plus a bit extra for bleed), i've then created new artboards (same size) for each page. I now want to put the adjoining pages together to show them to my Festival colleagues before we get them printed, so I thought the quickest way to do this would be to export each artboard as a PDF and then create a new file as A4 landscape and place two of the adjoining exported pages in to show a double page layout. However one of my exported artboard files is bigger - as in when I place it into the new double page document it is larger than the page, unlike the other ones which were the exact size and slotted in nicely. I thought perhaps the programme was having a glitch so I closed affinity reopened, discarded the export that was wrong and re-exported it again, but it did the same thing. Any ideas? Obviously i am happy to just resize the export once I place it in the double page file but I was curious as to why this would have happened. Any help greatly received! I've been learning a lot from this forum over the past few days, it's fantastically helpful to a less than knowledgable user like me! Thanks, Amy
  23. I have a document with 5 artboards. I want to select 2 - the front and back of a flyer - and print them back to back. On the Scaling and Artboards dropdown on the print dialog, I can see the individual artboards but not how to select 2 at once. When there were only 3 artboards in the file, I got around this by selecting Entire Document and setting the page range to print pages 1 - 2 but if I try that now, there is a whole lot of extra white space showing on the pages. The document prints only the top snippet of each page, and this is positioned right at the bottom of the page. Do I have to export the artboards to pdf first? Any other ideas how to do this from AD please?
  24. Hi, I am looking at converting a text (2 pages A4 in LibreOffice) into a double sided A3 brochure, and I figured I could use Affinity Designer for it because it should allow me to play with the layout side of things (as Affinity Publisher doesn't yet exist - big beta tester nudge here :) ). I can also do it in LibreOffice, but What You See Is Not What You Get in LibreOffice once you drop the image in the place you are expecting it to go, and Affinity Designer has already been spectacularly helpful in helping to create good looking drawings so it has rather grown on me :) Content is ready so I don't have to worry about any ability to edit it later, but is there anything I as amateur need to know about doing this? The two images on these pages have been drawn with Designer and are 100% vector mode so they'll fit right in, and there is plenty of breathing space as the 2 pager was drawn up with headers and footers which the A3 version can ditch (as that ends up on the outside). I was thinking about creating text boxes per section and for each section header, and set up a general colour for the section headers so I can change them quickly in one go and more or less start from there, probably with grid snapping in place so it's quick to align. There may be a background image, but that would be very light/faint so we don't have to fling a lot of ink onto pages. I'll do inside and outside as separate files as that makes printing easier. Once this project is funded we'll get a professional who will probably take 30 seconds to do what might take me a full day, but part of me relishes the opportunity to learn something in the process :). Thank you in advance for any tips, gotchas I need to look out for, and any tutorials on brochure making.
  25. I've opened pdf ( Created in AI) in Afinity and tried to work on the file. I am power user of Adobe but decided to check out both programs (and bought full licence for both). I am struggling to work with AD as when I have some layer selected in the artboard, I am almost unable to find it in Layer Panel (I keep scrolling and Scrolling) It is not like in PS when you select layer it automatically show it in Layer panel. Is there any magic trick? PLEASE HELP! Thanks, Marta
