  1. I'm writing to share some tips, but I also hope Affinity developers will see these and make the Arrange tools easier to use in future versions. I'm working on texture images for 3D models which need to be symmetrical from left to right. Conceptually for me, the easiest thing to do is paint on the left side, duplicate the layer, flip the copy, and mask if necessary. But I've found it exceptionally difficult to get expected behavior from Affinity Photo's Arrange menu items. Keep in mind that all these tips are in the context of using Flip transforms to end up with artwork that is mirrored left-to-right or top-to-bottom. Tip #1: If the layer you want to mirror has a mask, make sure there are visible pixels somewhere at the extreme edges. Photo apparently does not use the current selection as a guide to how you want to flip stuff. So if the layer you need to flip was created by pasting, it might flip according to bounds smaller than your full image width, even if you hit Ctrl-A to select the full image bounds before flipping. As a result, even if the visible pixels mostly fill the layer, the flipped portion can end up the the wrong place. To be sure my flipping will result in a mirror image, I make sure to paint a few visible pixels along the left and right edges when flipping horizontally, or along the top and bottom edges when flipping vertically. Basically I use pixel painting to make sure the layer I'm flipping extends across exactly the full width or height of the image before I flip it. To be fair, Photo's behavior in this regard is not a bug. If you've pasted in something small on a collage and need it to face the other way, you don't want it to jump from one side of the screen to the other when flipped. Tip #2: Temporarily set the layer to full opacity and Normal mode before flipping, if applicable. Today I had a layer with a mask set to Color Burn mode at 10% opacity, and flipping horizontally simply erased the layer's content. I tried several times but always ended up with a blank layer. I wondered if opacity or mode was somehow confusing the program, so I set the layer to Normal mode at 100% opacity, and then flipping worked. Tip #3: If the Arrange menu items are grayed out, lasso- or box-select something to copy and (temporarily) paste. I started a new document from an image I wanted to mirror. After duplicating the Background layer, I found the Arrange menu's transform items all grayed out. In an attempt to enable them, I tried all these things in turn: Made sure the unlocked duplicated layer was selected Hit Ctrl-A to select the full image size Saved and quit and reopened the program Renamed the duplicate layer in case the program prevents you from transforming based on the name "Background" Added a new, empty pixel layer Quit the program again and updated to version 2.2.0 before retrying Nothing worked. Then I used the lasso to copy and paste a small portion of the duplicated layer, and the Arrange menu items came alive. After that I was able to delete the temporarily pasted layer and then flip the duplicated layer.
  2. Hi! I have several hundred (~500) different SVG files, all square icons with designs on them. I'd like to arrange them all in one big document, with an equal amount of space between them, so that I can print it as a poster. Other than doing it manually and copying/pasting each icon into the "master" document, is there any way I can somehow script it or just open all the SVG files at once and tell Designer "Combine and arrange these"? Also, is it even possible for me to add that many nodes to one document without crashing my computer? I have a MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) 2.3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9 with 16GB RAM.
  3. I've run into some very strange behavior in Affinity Designer 1.7.3 on macOS that I finally figured out was caused by how symbol instances handle rearranging (moving back/forth), which might be by design I guess, but have such strange and unpredictable consequences I'm considering them a bug: It seems that when using symbols and selecting once instance of the symbol and pressing the "Move to front" or "Move to back" rearrange buttons this somehow applies to all instances of the same symbol. I'm guessing that this is more or less never what the user intends when trying to move a single selected object back/forward and it's very unexpected. This is further complicated by the fact that the canvas isn't redrawn properly for the other instances of the same symbol when this happens, so you only see that they've been moved back/forward if you scroll or otherwise cause them to be redrawn. And as the final problem, the arrange can't be undone. The problems seem to be especially bad when the other layers being rearranged are also symbol instances. So, together this more or less means you currently can't use the arrange feature on symbols and instead you have to manually drag the layers in the layers panel to re-arrange them if you want different instances of the same symbol on different levels. 4. This problem has been around all through the Beta and now in the latest version 1.7.3. Mac OS X 10.13.6. It may well be an unavoidable problem due to its nature. If you are using a 2-page spread and you are using many "layers" of images and text on many pages (background image at 'back', text and picture frames in front of that, master page data with Section Names and Page #s, Section Names set for specific page ranges, etc.) then you can't just delete a single page and add it somewhere else without losing the registration of pages that follow the deletion and the addition. The deletion causes every page to move "up" changing the recto and verso pages to the opposite types and much more: Master Page data (left and right, left only, right only, none) - can shift to a master that is on the next page/prior page The "layers" of frames and pictures on a page will get jumbled (background image is at front instead of at back, often, hiding the text and photos beneath). This part has to be a "real" bug as the position of an object back-to-front on a page should never change because it has moved to a different side of a spread. I reported this specifically during Beta. Section naming can get shifted by one page. If you add in a page somewhere else, after deleting one, you still have the problems as they don't repair themselves. The way around this is to ONLY add or delete pages in sets of two. In my case, I wanted to take the first recto page, delete it and move it to the end of the document as a verso page. This shifted the entire document and then it exhibited the problems I outlined. Instead, I added a single page at the end (verso) then copied the first (recto) page to that last page. This left at the start of the document, in order, one recto followed by a 2-page spread. On that 2-page spread I cut the items from the recto (page 3) and copied them to the recto (page 1). This left a single 2-page spread (pages 2 and 3) entirely empty and I deleted those 2 pages without any of the problems creeping into the document. So, I just want to ask if it's possible to somehow ask AFPUB to be "smart" about that whole "deletion of single page" scenario - which would make the process much smoother, quicker, and easier. I think it would require internally reassigning the masters, sections, etc., as pages move up or down the spreads.
  5. Hey everybody, I am currently looking for the function to arrange file windows (or different views of a file) in Affinity Publisher. I know this feature was available in Photoshop, where I used it every day. Are there plans to add a similar feature to the Affinity Range? That would be great! In Photoshop there are the following arrangement options to choose from: Arrange → Cascade Arrange → Tile Arrange → Float in Window Arrange → Float All in Window Arrange → Consolidate All to Tabs If there's already a topic about this I'm sorry, I couldn't find it. Greetings MrDoodlezz
  6. I haven't tried this with Picture Frame Ellipse Tool. The scenario: 2-page spread with one 2-page background photo in a frame and several embedded photos inside Picture Frame Rectangles. I want some of the photos / frames to overlap so I move them into place and note that one frame (selected) is behind another. So I Arrange / Move Forward One. Nothing - the frame is still behind another. So I repeat Arrange / Move Forward One. Nothing. After several failed attempts to get the frame to move forward, I try to Arrange Move to Front. That works. The same happens when using Move Back One. Nothing appears to happen after several attempts and I must use Move to Back instead. The problem with that is that there is a framed background photo across the 2-page spread so the photo is moved behind that background and disappears. Then I have to go to great lengths to get things straight again since Move to Front is the only thing that will work visibly, I must, instead, deal with the second photo - Move to Front. My observation is that there are three layers of frames, then: the background, and two photos overlapped together. Basically you can move one photo to the back and it disappears, then you can move it forward ONE to become visible in front of the background. But moving forward one more time will not move the frame on top of the other smaller photo. It appears, then, that AFPUB thinks the two smaller photos are at the same layer since nothing happens. But Move to Front does work. My point in mentioning this is that the Move Forward One and Move Back one never seem to actually, reliably DO anything visible - I suspect that they are partially broken as I have see this problem over many months in beta and in the published version.
  7. Please add the option “optically” for arranging/aligning objects and texts optically. Not the easiest thing to add, but optical alignment of objects would be probably unique.
  8. The Arrange drop-down dialog behaves quite strangely in a number of ways. For example, do the following: 1. Create two simple, non-aligned objects. 2. Select them. 3. Click Arrange on the toolbar. This will open the Arrange drop-down. 4. On the drop-down, click Align Center. It looks like the the two objects were aligned. 5. Click OK. 6. Click anywhere on the page. Objects are now back to their original positions. Aside from this flawed implementation, I also found at least the following weird behaviors: Step 5: if you click Cancel instead, nothing seems to happen until you click the page. Step 5: Click Alt+tab. The drop-down disappears. If you use the drop-down to space objects, objects are misteriously moved after I click anywhere. The solution seems to be to correct these bugs and, of course, get rid of the OK / Cancel buttons (which are meaningful only for modal dialog boxes, BTW) and perform actions immediately (like the Snapping drop-down).
  9. The Auto Distribute options under Arrange panel is disabled. I am not sure if I am doing something wrong, or if this is a bug. How do I enable it? I am using the free trial v1.4 i believe on OS X 10.11.3. Kindly help.
  10. let's say I have three objects; object A, object B and object C. I want object A above object B, object B above object C and object C above object A in the layer. Is it possible to have circular layer instead of linear layer?
  11. I just started using the trial version of Designer. I am trying to create simple flower designs; think petals of a certain shape (perhaps teardrop) arranged around a center circle. Is there a tool, command or procedure to evenly arrange objects around a circle? Of course I would want the objects to radiate from the center of the circle. So the procedure would need to rotate the object and then distribute it. Thanks
  12. I m a fairly new user of Affinity and still learning the many features of the program, but am enjoying the experience nonetheless. There is one area that is causing me some frustration. When I open a raw file (select, File., open and file that I have exported to Affinity specific folder), I can perform most editing functions from the options on the right panel. However, after watching I training video about using a layer and sharpening mask i went to open either "Layer" or "Filter" from pull down menu, but both options were not present. Without a file open, My menu shows from left to right: File, Edit, Text, Layer, Document, Select, Arrange, Filters, View, Window, Help. With a file open the Menu show: File, Edit, View, Window, Help. (see attached screen shot) Of course with the few options I am limited to what I can do. Any ideas? All options on Studio are checked and have been reset, but I understand they relate to the right panel anyway. Any help would be most welcome.
