  1. Hi there, I loaded in a 32 bit EXR to Affinity Photo of a render I did, and it came in with 2 pixel layers - one with the 32 bit colour information (called RGB), and the other being a greyscale image alpha (called Alpha). Both layers have an all white alpha channel. I'm trying to copy one of the RGB alpha layer channels (they are all the same) into the alpha channel of the RGB layer to get proper transparency, and I can't seem to find a way to do it. Is there an easy way to copy data from one channel to another in Affinity Photo? Cheers
  2. An accessibility improvement such as a hotkey for the "Protect Alpha" option would cause a great improvement in digital painting workflow as this option is used many times throughout the process of a single digital painting in most techniques. In Photoshop it is possible to assign a hotkey for this as far as I know. In AP the only way to do this is by clicking the button that hides in a dropdown menu (shown on the attached pic) when using Affinity on a laptop (which has smaller screen than desktop monitors - on a big desktop monitor the option is normally showing in the same toolbar). There should also be the option to customize the tools in the said context toolbar. When it comes to the brush context toolbar, the customization option would allow me to hide the "Symmetry" and "Mirror" tools since I hardly ever use them and make space on the screen for the "Protect Alpha" tool that I use all the time. I've seen someone on the Affinity Photo forum raise tha case of "Protect Alpha" hiding in a dropdown menu. I believe that the customizable context toolbar would help not only digital painters often needing to toggle "Protect Alpha", but also users across variety of disciplines to improve their workflow in Affinity software.
  3. Hi there, I want to export layered .afphoto files that has Fill Layer with alpha (by adding a new fill layer with selection on) to .psd but I found out that when I open it as .psd, the alpha channel from the Fill Layer is not translated. I attached a test file to demonstrate what I meant. Both preserve editability or accuracy is giving the same results. The .psd has the fill layer but the alpha is gone. Is this a bug? Is there any workaround to make the alpha also translated to the fill layer? FillLayerTest.afphoto FillLayerTest.psd
  4. In Photoshop you can preserve transparency for a layer using the hotkey '/'. There's a similar function in the brush tool setting called 'Protect Alpha', is there a hotkey for that?? Or ways to assign a hotkey to that?? Ideally this setting should be in the layers too
  5. New image. New pixel layer. Soft brush. Blob. Curves layer above image layer. RGB. Select Alpha. Adjust curve. Works just fine. Drag curves to child layer position (mask or clipping). Doesn't work. Standard RGB curves work fine above and as child positions. I tried it also with Channel Mixer and this also only works for alpha adjustment in the in-line position.
  6. I know this has been requested multiple times, but Affinity really need to be fixed the way of handling alpha channel on import/export. The alpha should be exported as alpha, not transparency. RGB channel should not be matted(erased) where alpha is 100% on export.(at least need an option to select) The transparency and the alpha should be treated differently.
  7. Hello, I want a selection that I made to be filled simply completely with one color. I used the fill tool and changed tolerance to 100%. However, some dark pixels have alpha in them and they are not being overwritten. How can I simply make every pixel of the selection white, with no alpha?
  8. This is a completely non-destructive mask, which is a group of many layers. You can use many raster and vector layers/objects in one mask. And of course, you can edit them! Nondestructive_Mask.afphoto Nondestructive_Mask_Test.afphoto Nondestructive_Mask.afassets How to use Place your mask parts between the Procedural Texture and the Fill Layer. If necessary, change the background transparency, changing the Fill Layer color. To apply this mask-group only to a specific layer, nest it. To apply a mask-group to multiple layers, select mask-group and desired layers below, and group them. Then change blending mode for this new group, from Passthrough to Normal. How it works This is a group with the "Erase" blending mode. This group has two main layers, the Procedural Texture and the Fill Layer. The Procedural Texture turns rgb and grey pixels into alpha. Formula: 1-rgbtoi(R,G,B)-a=Alpha Many thanks to @NotMyFault Fill layer is required to control the background transparency. In conclusion This non-destructive composite mask allows you to fine-tune individual parts of the mask, achieving the desired result. Affinity interactivity allows you to see the result of your operations in real time, unlike some other programs. 9. What do the experts say: add a curves adjustment, select the alpha channel select the color picker Should the picker select the alpha or the lightness value to find which part of the curve to ajust? In my experiments, it selected the lightness, which might be not what you expect when modifying alpha. curves alpha picker.afphoto
  10. Hi there, i tried to use a live stack to merge several images in a HDR style. Images are exposure bracketed. I do not understand how alpha channels work in combination with live stacking: If i apply a mask to one of the pictures, the mask is effective to filter out unwanted parts. But if i try to adjust the alpha channel of the mask, e.g. with help of a levels adjustment, this does not show any effect. Is this inteded behavior, or a bug?
  11. In Gimp i can manipulate transparency in Blur (retract, expand, shape) with an Alpha Curve. Although AP has an alpha option in the Curve Adjustment, it doesnt seem to do anything. Here is a screenshot of what i can do in Gimp: The only way i can recreate this with Affinity Photo is when its in grayscale.
  12. Take an image. Apply Blend Ranges and adjust transparency. Add live Unsharp Mask or High Pass sharpening. The moment the radius leaves zero, all transparency is lost on either and everything gets sharpened. I also tried this on an image with Alpha adjusted via a Procedural Texture algorithm and the same effect happened. What gives?
  13. Brush color(black/white) behave differently from on Quick Mask or Layer Mask. I can paint only white regardless of brush color. I would like brush to behave like on Quick Mask or Layer Mask. Is this a bug?
  14. Hey everyone, thanks to the great OCIO support and the performance, I´m using affinty photo more and more to process my still linear exr renderings out of octane for cinema 4D. Unfortunately I'm having an issue with alpha masking of groups with this workflow. These are the steps I take: 1. I'm rendering a half float linear exr and use the "object layer color" for alpha masking [because it's faster to render inside of octane]. 2. I take the exr into affinty [1.8.0.585] 3. Use OCIO to convert the Image to sRGB 4. Below that, I adjust my exposure if necessary 5. On Top, I have a LUT to convert the Image to sRGB ICC 5. I right-click my black and white (but still RGB) object layer color and rasterize to mask 6. I drag a drop the mask on my grouped beauty [regular beauty and denoised beauty] 7. As a result, the mask is very pixelated and unusable. Masking a group seems to cause the problems. Without the group everything works with and without OCIO. The same mask and grouping works fine in Photoshop. The Photoshop files looks different because its without OCIO but adjusted exposure, otherwise it would be way too bright. Thanks in advance!
  15. When specifying a color using the color tool (using latest Affinity Designer 1.7.3 ), how can I specify (or obtain) an actual value for the opacity? There is a slider which works fine, however there isn't any numeric value associated with the slider that indicates what percentage of the alpha value you're currently using. Also, the recent colors list doesn't appear to retain the opacity either. How can I input a specific value for the alpha? Getting the RGBA value would be fine, too. So, I just noticed that this behavior with the opacity not showing a percentage value only appears when using the "FILL" or "STROKE" options in the "Curves" toolbar. The dockable tool window with "Color, Swatches, Stroke, and Brushes" tabs shows the opacity percentage, but no hex value. Thanks!
  16. In my job I work with PS retouching old book covers. In many case I work with channels and calculations (to mix channels I created). I wanna to make the same things with AP but I can't: In PS I do: 1) I copy a channel (example: red and rename it to "red copy"). 2) I select the recently created channel, double click and can work on it in grayscale (it appears on the viewport) and I just leave a black and white version. 3) When I finish I copy another channel (example blue channel and rename it to "blue copy"). 4) The same process. 5) After finishing the blue copy modifications I open the calculations dialog box. 6) I mix the "red copy" and "blue copy" and I get a new alpha channel 7) I use it to mask a zone in the original image. How can i do the same thing with AP? I bought the three Affinity apps and I very happy with them. I'm using the 1.7.1 version.
  17. Hey all, I'm struggling to create and export an Alpha Channel from Affinity Photo (v1.7.1.404) to a CMYK .TIFF image. The image has been masked out and I'm trying to make a named Alpha Channel to be used as a Spot Colour for digital print in an Onyx RIP (To be names 'Spot 1' which refers to a Spot White Ink). Please see the attached screenshot for the masked out area which I'm talking about. I've followed several other posts and YouTube/Vimeo video's and it's just not clicking for me. The image will export as a .TIFF but it won't export an Alpha Channel no matter what I try. Methods I have tried: 1. Mask out areas, on the 'Selection raster Alpha' channel, right click, and 'Create Spare Channel' and name it 'Spot 1' 2. In the layers under Adjustments, create and Channel Mixer and pull up the Alpha slider. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help!
  18. Hello, I’ve just downloaded Affinity Publisher (Beta) and am enjoying my first attempts. It’s a lot friendlier than Adobe InDesign, less fiddly, and reminds me of my favourite advert making program, MultiAd Creator, which is little known outside of the newspaper industry and is sadly now obsolete. I appreciate the ability to choose from different colour spaces at the outset. One of the many features that made MultiAd Creator so easy to use was that you could place a logo or piece of clip art, and then use a magic wand similar to the one in Photoshop to detect areas of uniform colour (most typically a white background), and erase them - Hey presto, your graphic would no longer be a rectangle, it would have its own shape and let whatever was underneath it show right around the edges. Sometimes this is known as transparency, but it has nothing to do with blending or opacity. Q. I am wondering whether there is (or is going to be) a built-in way to create a clipping path / transparent background / alpha channel in a graphic after it has been placed? InDesign does this but badly - no-one wants to see a ragged edge of white around the graphic afterwards. When done well it really is a very, very useful tool. The ability to remove backgrounds on the fly saves the designer from having to prepare each graphic in photoshop beforehand.
  19. This is kind of hard to explain, so I have a black and white image, and I want the image to be the alpha channel. Is there a way to replace the alpha channel with something else?
  20. Hi everyone, when I use the gaussian blur filter the edges of the picture become faded and transparent because it blurs the border without preserving the starting alpha, is there something that I'm missing or is it a new bug? in the tutorial it doesn't behave as it does in my version of affinity photo! Thanks RF
  21. Hello! Please, make me a hint, when we can expect PNG8 with full alpha? I found myself less working with AD because of lack of this final step that I regularly needs for app and web development, and to keep small file size in AE projects. I searched on forum, and see that this is often requested in last 2 years already. AD have magnificent Export persona mode, that is great for automatisation, and really need this feature.
  22. Hi How copy pixels information, to mask or alpha channle. For example, I need copy all pixels from the layer 1, and paste in the layer 2 alpha, or paste in the layer 2 mask. I'm stuck in this point Thanks!
  23. Hi, I'm using a 3d software package that can only generate texture depths by using the pixels from a PNG alpha channel. In Photoshop this is a straight forward process. You would simply create a new alpha channel in the channels palate, copy the texture map and paste it into the newly created alpha channel. Then save the file as a PNG with the alpha channel option checked. How do you achieve this in Affinity Photo? I have attached two JPG files. What I'm looking to do is make the ROUGH file an alpha channel of the COLOR file. Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks.
