  1. My co worker produced an AI file for a 3mtr x3mtr poster and sent it to me as a pdf, The size was 50mb. I made some edits but when I exported the file back as pdf, the size was less than 6mb so clearly something is missing. In face I can see that there are some deficiencies in my output. Can I export the file back in the approximate size it was first sent in? Thanks
  2. I'm working with a company that utilizes Adobe Illustrator - but of course, I don't use AI. I use Affinity Designer. I assured the design team that I'd be able to import their AI files, edit, and then export to AI, and the process would be seamless. However, it doesn't appear that this is the case, because whenever I import the AI file into AD, half imports correctly, and half does not. Am I doing something wrong, or is there a specific way I need to import/export AI files into AD that I'm not aware of?
  3. Hi, It will be a bit long, since I have to touch other, very closely related issues as well. Rhino to Affinity Designer: So I'm a bit lost, at first a seemingly easy excercise: how do I get linework from Rhino/RhinoWIP to Affinity Designer without using a 3rd software? The exported .ai/.eps files won't be read, and .dwg is still out of league. Relevant McNeel Discourse threads: https://discourse.mcneel.com/t/what-export-option-to-use-to-get-rhino-into-affinity-designer/38872/6 https://discourse.mcneel.com/t/exporting-in-eps-ai-format/37015/8 https://discourse.mcneel.com/t/reading-exported-ai-files-in-vector-editors-other-than-illustrator/18092 I've tried the vector PDF as described, but it is extremely messy, not usable. I have no idea, why the curves are joined into one curve: I have to explode them, then I tried joining them like described here, but no success, they remain detached. Here are my questions: Can we expect extended .ai or .eps compatibility, or even better, support for .dwg files? In the meantime, what do you suggest to send linework from Rhino to Designer? Two very closely related topics: 1. DWG/DXF exchange between CAD software and Affinity Designer This is a thread asking for DWG/DXF support, which if I recall, did not happen since then: Please consider increasing attention on this matter, as the latest official reply was from @MEB, over 2,5 years ago. This is a very important feature for many designers (myself is an architect), since most of the time our drawings are not generated in Designer/Illustrator. There are flexible 2D editing and publishing tools (e.g. ARCHICAD), that handle technical drawings quite nice, but not textured drawings, so a more tailored, flexible tool is in dire need. But the (seemingly) lack of interest from the development side is a bit saddening, since involving another tool in the workflow leaves Designer on the shelf - which is pity, since Photo is wonderfully replacing Photoshop. 2. Select same... functionality Other software generated PDFs from e.g. ARCHICAD are better structured, but one needs a lot of time to prepare them for exporting - I'm saying this workflow issue has two sides, but the lack of select same... features are also hurting a lot. (Also, ARCHICAD cannot produce .ai or .eps files, so the common denominator is DWG.) Thread here: This is almost a 3,5 years old request. To summarize: I recognize this is a long standing issue at McNeel as well, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who would appreciate a usable, decent workflow involving Rhino and Designer. (I've read over there at Discourse, that someone asked older .ai support already in the Windows beta threads, but couldn't find anything related.) But from your side, adding support for generic formats, namely DWG/DXF, with layers, and functionality that helps converting technical drawings (Select same) to Affinity Designer files is a must in the long run. I can only speak from my side of course, but the increasing activity in the above linked threads might suggest, that these are features that would be very welcome. Here is a small testing pack, a .3dm (Rhino) that should originate something, that I can create a usable .afdesign file from. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/nytg3owlf2rf8eh/AABtbW1dxAkhonOaRwPRI5pVa?dl=0 Thank you!
  4. Hi, I don't know if it's possible to achieve this but, imagine you work with different people and you share a .ai file, or somebody wants a .ai file of your work. Then it would be great to have a .ai export option. Thanks! *update: Sorry, topic already excist, you can delete this
  5. Two new Engadget articles discuss research projects that train neural networks to in one case generate 'fake celebrity' photographs & in the other to try to give photos taken with smartphones 'DSLR quality.' Obviously, the results are far from perfect but imagine how as this & related technology becomes more mature it could be applied to graphics software in the not so distant future. Inpainting & auto-trace algorithms could "see" more than the pixels in a raster image & adapt accordingly; color corrections & RAW development could create 'looks' otherwise impossible for existing adjustments to achieve; blending elements from different photos could be done 'automagically' to correct shadow & perspective differences; & entirely new types of filters could be developed that could do things like provide time of day adjustments. The mind boggles.
  6. When I open an svg file created in Inkscape in Designer, some of the tools don't work. For example: when I select the text elements in order to change them to a different font or size, they don't change. The font is selected in the Character menu etc, but the fonts don't change in the file itself. As the program exports svg files I figured there wasn't a compatibility issue with Inkscape files. Is there a general compatibility issue between svg and Designer or is it to do with Inkscape? And is there a solution? I also can't open ai files created in Illustrator. The file opens with no content except this text: 'saved without PDF Content. To Place or open this file in other applications, it should be re-saved from Adobe Illustrator with the "Create PDF Compatible File" option turned on. This option is in the Illustrator Native Format Options dialog box, which appears when saving an Adobe Illustrator file using the Save As command.' Is there a solution to this too? I love this program, but this kind of glitch makes updating previous work impossible now I have switched from Illustrator to Affinity Designer, which means it has to re-created from scratch. Thanks for your help.
  7. Hello, I hope someone can give me an idea. I'm not a graphic designer (wish I was). I bought Affinity to create or modify simple graphics. I got away pretty good so far just by clicking, double clicking, left clicking or looking at every simple option or icon on the menus to insert, modify, add stuff, etc. But OMG I just can't figure out how to deal with text in this graphic that was created in AI (same with a PDF doc too). I just want to access the text and change few words, but all I can see is each letter as a multitude of layers. I can't find a way to see the text "as Text" and modify it simply. Can someone lead me in the right direction? Is there a tutorial somewhere? I attach a picture here
  8. Hello, if I open the attached Adobe Illustrator file (.ai), I just get a white/blank page. I work on Win10 64bit with Designer version 1.5.3.69. Is this a bug?
  9. Hello. I have been using Illustrator regularly since CS2 (~10 years), and I recently purchased Affinity Designer. I'm interested in a dictionary of Illustrator features and workflows done in Designer. I'm willing to pay $$$ for it too. For example: Illustrator anchor point: Designer it is called an X Illustrator outline mode: Designer go to X menu and click Y Illustrator direct selection tool: Designer combination of X tool and Y tool. If you need to select and move one Z Illustrator reflect tool: Designer not a tool, but reflection function, etc... Unreal Engine has some pretty good Unity to Unreal transition resources (I won't link to them since this is my first post). Does such a resource exist for Affinity Designer?
  10. I wanted to make absolutely sure before purchasing brush sets off of Creative Market... Affinity Designer can import .ai files correct? Are there any special considerations I need to consider? For example, this following brush set: https://creativemarket.com/Guerillacraft/100638-Scatter-texture-brushes-for-AI Would I encounter any problems in AD? I see on the https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/designer/full-feature-list/ that AI is included in importable file extensions but it says "Adobe® Illustrator® AI (containing PDF stream)" Not sure what the last bit means (PDF stream..?) I just wanna buy some cool brush sets on Creative Market! lol :P
  11. Hello, we just begin to work with Affinity 1.5, as this screen shot, it seems the Affinity does not support export the document to .ai format of the illustrator on MAC. what format of Affinity export setting do we use for the illustrator on MAC which will inport Affinity document? we see that .svg format can keep Affinity data of object, layer, line, font, etc.
  12. It would be nice if Affinity Designer could save as an adobe illustrator file. This would overcome the big advantage Adobe has over Affinity, usability. Most people (sad but true) still use Adobe. If Affinity could save as AI, like it can PHD...it would be a big help.

  14. Hi, I've been trying to replace Illustrator with Designer. The tools are fine and are quite similar, but certain functionality is just not replaceable. Within my workflow, I often export ai or dwg from Rhino to further edit in AI. rect_cir.AI is an example. in Rhino, it is a simple rectangle and circle, in a layer colored red and green respectively. When exported as .AI, the Adobe Illustrator can open these just fine even with the layer color information and layer structure. When opening the same file in Designer, there is nothing, only a blank document with the size that should be the overall bounding box. Any ideas, anyone?
  15. Will Adobe Designer eventually be able to export as an .AI file? I was reading in the past about this topic, and someone said it was private. If this is the case, how can any Adobe file be exported at all? How can Adobe Photoshop not be private, whereas Adobe Illustrator is? Please let me know if this changes and explain this topic further so I can understand. What are file formats I can save as to keep it editable for an Adobe user to open Thank you so much!
  16. Hello dear Affintiy Team, i just love your application, i am new and switching from illustrator. I couldn't find this topic in the forum: But how can i import content that is outside of an artboard from illustrator. (See Screenshot) I use this space like a desk, so there are a lot of important information, and if i want to move to your app in total, i need this for all my old graphics from illustrator. Thanks for reply. Greetings Dirk

  18. Hi there, I didn't put this in the 'bug' area because I'm not sure who has the bug. However, in the past after I have got a result from Vector Magic I would usually double click the 'drag me' bit to open Illustrator (the default program to open .ai files) to then work on it. After purchasing and getting myself to get used to AD I have made it the default program to open .ai files, which works nicely, however, when I do the process from Vector Magic it opens AD as expected but the result is a blank page. I have had this since I had AD July 15 when I had Yosemite, it's the same for my 2015 iMac and MBP, and now is the same with OS Sierra on my iMac. Screenies are attached. I just wondered if the bug was with AD with import or VM with export - or just some miscommunication between them. And i'm not like - oh! it must be a convenient a step between them as possible - but I just thought I would mention it :) never know, might be a small thing to make the difference. Vector Magic V1.18
  19. I'm not sure if there is anybody who asked this before, but i just wanna know why we can't save as or export to .ai or .cdr or maybe other extension instead of affinity file? Is it because of something like copyright (?) limitation or will it be a new feature in the future? Thanks
  20. Can we get an equivalent to AI's Ctrl+Shift+M (transform -> move). This is something I am constantly using for exact object/text placement.
  21. Hey, So I just bought Affinity Designer for Windows, and noticed when importing some of my old Illustrator files, that Affinity doesn't import the vector objects that exist outside the page area set in the Illustrator file (I usually place work in progress objects outside the page bounds)... I was wondering, how hard it would be to enable support for importing these out of bounds objects? If Affinity Designer doesn't support off page objects, maybe add a check box on the open window which ignores the original documents page dimensions and sets it to all the available content, not just what's on the page. That way the data is still accessible and not lost after I no longer have access to Illustrator. Cheers, Mark
  22. I am new to AD, I saw this cool Drag and Drop symbol for Ai on the "Creative Market" website and was wondering can this be done in AD. below is a link to a video of what the plug-in does. Any help or insight would be great! video https://creativemarket.com/ianbarnard/762525-Drag-Drop-WoodType-for-Illustrator
  23. Can I open older Adobe AI, PSD, and EPS files in Affinity Designer and work with them with out problems?
  24. Does not open files in .ai or .eps format. They appear as an empty representation but nothing else. Don't appear to be hidden, as no obvious way to reveal any files contents. icons.ai icons.eps sunz.ai sunz.eps
  25. Hello guys, I'm a new user and i wanted to know if it's possible to work on Affinity with .ai files ? It seems impossible but maybe there is a converter (from .ai to .afdesign) which allowed me to do it . Thanks a lot ^_^ ^_^
