  1. Hi y'all! So I'm currently working on my thesis layout via publisher (going great, btw). One of the aspects is accessible design in printing. So I was wondering - wouldn't it be great to be able to test-view the document in different color-blindness modes? Or even visual-impairment? I know there is workarounds for this. I just believe preparing good tools in-software to produce accessible design shows how much the company behind the tool values or at least acknowledges these principles. What do you think? Linda
  2. Hi! I'm a blind freelancer who works with creating accessibility reports. I ran into a pickle: I cannot find ways to add alt text within the Affinity software. I'm currently running Publisher, but I do work extensively with Photo and Designer as well. It's very easy for me to miss the location of an option, so I thought I'd ask here. In order to finalise two client reports I need to find the suite's alt text features. It's a legal requirement in my country that digital documents and websites alike be accessible. I am on MacOS Ventura, frequently used in conjunction with zoom and other accessibility features. I don't create documents that are going to be uploaded to public facing websites, and any "the alt text is added to the website through its coding" is therefore inapplicable for my situation. Oftentimes, for social media, Wordpress, etc - the text is input manually right as you edit the page. In documents, and PDFs specifically are horribly difficult to wrangle into compliance with accessibility standards, but it is doable. Furthermore, Word processing software such as Word lets me input this manually for documents - but Word isn't appropriate for the type of content I create and manage. Personally, I also use a screenreader, and I for sure do while reading PDFs and long form documents. I've learnt how to not rely on my screenreader while using Affinity software as it's a hot mess, but honestly - this I expected, and that is outside the scope of my question. I've formatted the document correctly semantically - the alt text is all that's missing. I'm also at the forefront of my field doing this in my area, so it'll look absolutely terrible if I can't deliver on this, hence my question. Thanks in advance.
  3. Hi I'm not sure I've missed it, but we need to produce online documents where we can have alt-text with pictures and reading order available. Is this a function I've missed or is it in the pipeline? Really important for us at stamma.org otherwise we're going to have to look at other software. Jane
  4. I think it would be better if the Beta products could be accessed from the "Your account" button on the Affinity Store (https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/). Seeing that I have multiple addons that I got with V1, the free addons for V2, the software keys for all V1 & V2 products and additional addon purchases, the Beta downloads are now halfway in the list. Wouldn't it be better if you get an additional beta button in the your account button to immediately go to the beta downloads? At least, that would have made it a lot easier to find (and thus easier to participate for new members).
  5. Would really like the ability to increase size and readability of icons and related text on both desktop and iPad. Frankly, I am shocked this isn't in V2 of Affinity Designer especially although I have licensed the three products in the suite.
  6. Bought & installed Affinity version 2.03 on a Windows 10 laptop with a 1366 x 768px display. This appeared to meet the Affinity tech specs. Affinity version 1 had worked OK on this laptop. But, on first use of Photo 2, the processed photo could not be "exported" using the File... Export dialogue: The "Export" & "Cancel" buttons are hidden below the bottom of the new combined export dialogue. The height of the dialogue cannot be reduced by dragging & the dialogue cannot be repositioned to make these buttons visible. The trick of "Tabbing" through the various setting in this dialogue to reach the "export" button did not work because the tab sequence was not obvious. See the attached screenshot. Other dialogues in Affinity 2 may suffer from similar problems. At present, this means that Affinity 2 is not usable on this ordinary Windows laptop. This is a serious accessibility and usability issue. Please consider making these buttons visible. BTW. As is fairly common, the "display scaling" in Windows is set to 125% so as to make text readable on this laptop's small screen.
  7. There are currently a few instances of controls in dialog boxes that have accessibility issues. A quick non-exhaustive bunch of examples: - the graphical aspect ratio lock button (for instance in the Resize Document dialog) can be focused and activated with the keyboard, but lacks a visible focus indication (affinity-focus-visible-lock.gif) - radio buttons receive focus, but lack a focus indication; in most cases though, they can still be activated with the keyboard (using Space) (affinity-focus-visible-radios) - there are some radio buttons that do receive focus, lack a visible focus indication, and in addition, even when they have focus, they can't be checked/activated using the keyboard (affinity-focus-visible-keyboard-fill.gif, affinity-focus-visible-keyboard-matte.gif) - in some dialogs (with radio buttons), it seems that keyboard focus never gets to the Apply/Cancel buttons (affinity-focus-visible-keyboard-fill.gif, affinity-focus-visible-keyboard-matte.gif) there are likely more variations along the same line. this also applies to other Affinity products (Affinity Designer etc) that use the same UI widgets. [attaching the animated gifs (that show cycling through dialogs using Tab) as a zip, as it seems I can't upload raw gifs.] affinity-photo-focus-keyboard-gifs.zip
  8. I am hooked on Affinity products, I love the programs, all of them. I have one suggestion for your apps. I am visually impaired and struggle to see the tools etc. Could you incorporate a magnifier into the programs? so when you hover over items you get a magnified version of the tool your hovering over. I know Windows and macs have magnifiers built in but I don't want their magnifiers getting in the way. Move over the paintbrush a magnified version appears over the top. It would be brilliant.
  9. I'm using Affinity Publisher and submitting a pdf to a collection to be made as an e-book, and theres the orginizer want each pdf to pass an accessibility check using tags, any tutorial on how to do this in publisher?
  10. An accessibility improvement such as a hotkey for the "Protect Alpha" option would cause a great improvement in digital painting workflow as this option is used many times throughout the process of a single digital painting in most techniques. In Photoshop it is possible to assign a hotkey for this as far as I know. In AP the only way to do this is by clicking the button that hides in a dropdown menu (shown on the attached pic) when using Affinity on a laptop (which has smaller screen than desktop monitors - on a big desktop monitor the option is normally showing in the same toolbar). There should also be the option to customize the tools in the said context toolbar. When it comes to the brush context toolbar, the customization option would allow me to hide the "Symmetry" and "Mirror" tools since I hardly ever use them and make space on the screen for the "Protect Alpha" tool that I use all the time. I've seen someone on the Affinity Photo forum raise tha case of "Protect Alpha" hiding in a dropdown menu. I believe that the customizable context toolbar would help not only digital painters often needing to toggle "Protect Alpha", but also users across variety of disciplines to improve their workflow in Affinity software.
  11. Part of my workflow for doing flat fills on comics and the like is to do a magic-wand selection and then to consistently grow my selection by a fixed amount to "bleed" into the line art, usually by 3 px or so. Every time I open the 'grow / shrink' menu it's reset back to 0, however. I would love a way to always grow by the same amount, either by defining a macro that does it by a specific amount or by having the last amount stay active in the dialog box which comes up. Additionally, it would be nice if I could use the tab key or similar to change the focus within the dialog box; currently tab just toggles the UI visibility.
  12. Hi! Maybe someone asked this before, but wasn't able to find a specific discussion. So please delete this if needed. I'd like to have an option to enlarge Layer's preview/thumbnail, I'm getting old... Is this in your thoughts? Cheers, Paolo
  13. I'd be very interested in understanding how Publisher will address accessibility in their exported PDFs. Currently there is no way to tailor a document to export a PDF with any acknowledgement of A11y. I appreciate that it's early days. I just hope it hasn't been left too late. InDesign has been trying to address it, but it too was appalling in its early versions. I expected that a progressive new app might be thinking about this and build it in from the very beginning — after all we are building documents for screen so often, we can't just ignore the requirements of so many.
  14. I would love to understand more Tutorial videos from Affinity. But only a few videos have subtitles. I'm deaf and I can only understand videos through closed caption (also the reason I bought the Designer Workbook).

  16. This is more of an accessibility issue than anything else. It took me forever to discover that I had to go to document settings to set the bleed width. I probably won't remember where it is the next time I need it. When exporting a document and checking bleeds, it would make sense to repeat the bleed width inputs there. Or at least making the default value not zero, so it doesn't seem like bleeds aren't working.
  17. Quite apart from the display problems on monitors with only 768 vertical pixels, the view menu is too long for accessibility purposes. If there are too many items on one menu it creates issues with accessiblity shortcuts, and makes selection slower. It would be better to add a Tools menu, and move several items to that. The attachment highlights numerous items that have no access key. The zoom items are OK where they are, but they could be moved to a submenu since most users will soon learn to use the shortcut keys, or will only use the scroll wheel for zooming. The Tools items do not belong on a view menu. Suggestion: Z Zoom > L Rotate Left R Rotate Right E Reset Rotation M View Mode > N New View V Views > A Show Margins G Show Guides I Show Grid U Show Rulers Ctrl R S Studios > P Move to Previous View Point X Move to Next View Point T Toggle UI F4 Move all other items to a new Tools menu.
  18. I'd like to request the straight-line function of the lasso tool (a selection tool) in affinity photo beta to be reworked a bit. Either as a separate tool, or with the shift button switching between straight and curved, without having to hold it down all the time to maintain the straight selection function? I found it quite impossible to make straight selections with my macpro touchpad while trying to press shift at the same time, and still use the spacebar to pan around the image. Plus that and I am a one-handed user, it's.. sort of an accessibility issue. :o Gimp has a good way of handing straight VS click-n'-drag behaviors with the lasso tool, by adding a vector point indicator (a circle indicating the beginning of the straight line activity and only completing the straight line when a new click occurs) and following the mouse with a line each time the cursor is lifted (mouse moved without click input). Thank you for sharing Affinity Photo as a live beta tool. We're very happy with our purchase of Affinity Designer!
  19. A feature I often use in Adobe apps is the Proof Setup option. In InDesign this allows me to check how document colours will look across different print and screen colour profiles, including some greyscale profiles. In Illustrator and Photoshop this menu option also checks how document colours would appear to someone with Protanopia or Deuteranopia-type colourblindness (for some reason this feature isn’t in InDesign). The colour profile previewing is nice to have, but I usually focus on just using the greyscale profiles as a way to test contrast in my artwork colours, and in Illustrator I often like to check that I’m not using colours that wouldn’t read well for a colourblind person. I’d love for Affinity apps to include greyscale and colourblindness preview options, as well as any other preview modes for visual impairments that may be useful. Having the ability to proof specific colour profiles would also be useful.
