  1. Hi, I've been using Affinity now for two professional projects and it's good. I noticed there are a few panels which can be consolidated to use the same template as the layers panel, this would lower the API surface area and improve maintainability over time. Just my 2 cents.
  2. It would be great if Option + Click in any of the Affinity UI's little collapsable triangle would open or close (depending on current status) ALL the of the panel's other collapsable triangles (at the same hierarchy level when applicable). For example, in the Assets and Layers panels it would be great to have this functionality to quickly view the entire hierarchy or categories instead of scrolling and scrolling. Thanks for your consideration and all you do.
  3. Hi, My company has started using Affinity Designer on the work floor and it's been great! But it got us thinking that a Developer persona would be very useful, where our developers could just click sections and get the full html / css structure, code, just a copy paste away from making it into the code. Maybe allow a view of the flow through the app via arrows so the developer has a good idea of the user-journey through the interface. The persona could also be used to view several states of an object, like an input field that returns and error or a button in a different state. I think this would tie in nicely with the 1.5 release that made interface work in Affinity so much more attractive and improve the flow between designers and developers. Thanks for reading.
  4. There is a shortcut to toggle the transform panel. But somehow it doesn't make the transform panel active. I would expect that it does. Because it would allow us to make transform changes directly from the keyboard without having to click on the transform panel first. There are a few other issues with the transform panel. When using the tab key, a field is selected as expected, but if I want to preform simple math on the value I can't position the cursor before or behind the value using the keyboard: using the left or right arrow keys increases the value! Strange indeed. Adding nudge distance in this panel would be a great timesaver as the preferences is not a good place to store something some of us change quite a lot. I also wonder why moving a duplicate with the nudge distance is not used in Power duplicate? Cheers, Wim
  5. Working on a redesign of an app in my company, and I wanted to experiment with Affinity Designer. Having had worked with both Sketch, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, Affinity was the right amount of "strange" I needed. Right between Ps and Ai, with bits of Sketch, it's exactly what I need. I got accustomed to the snapping, and it's a joy to do UI design with it. Especially with Artboards. Very very easy. I'm a bit miffed with the occasional crashes from various sources, but those are going to be history once the beta goes MP and gets released. I've also tested Flinto, Pixate and Principle in parallell with Affinity Designer, and I settled on Principle. Flinto is simply too primitive and has issues with element positioning. Quite the odd UX they got. not a fan. Pixate is a bit complicated and just doesn't cut it in terms of more complicated stuff. Having said that, Principle is still not the best, lacking timelined animation & interaction. What I wanted to see was something along the lines of After Effects Timeline animation but for individual elements, adjustable timeline lenght, etc. I would've wanted to be able to stopwatch parameters of properties and be able to change them (create keyframes in the process). Alas, no. The principle phone client is really primitive. No wireless sharing, you have to be connected. Eugh ! Unfortunately I cannot give more info about the project, nor can I post more screens, because I'd then be in deep trouble. Cheers.
  6. I am excited to share with you the official announcement of my new Affinity Designer course on Lynda.com. It been out for a couple of weeks now and just getting around to sharing with those of you who might of missed it. Much of the course was based on the features found in Affinity 1.4, but I think their a good amount of tips and techniques in this short 1hr and 18 minute course. I made this course for the designer/developer who need to get up to speed on UX/UI specific tools and features fast. Anyway, check it out and again thank you all for your continued interest and support! CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE COURSE Course Description Learn how to incorporate Affinity Designer's features into your own design process. Here Ronnie McBride shows how to set up your preferences, use artboards, create custom color themes in the Swatches panel, apply styles and gradients, and create wire-frames, mock-ups, UI assets, and hero graphics—all with Affinity Designer's versatile tool set. Once you find out what you can do with Affinity Designer, you may never go back to expensive design software again. Topics include:Setting up your preferences and interface Creating new documents Using artboards Creating a wire-frame or mock-up Creating UI assets Exporting for prototyping ` Check out my other titles in my signature below.
  7. Hi! I was playing with Figma and jumped back to Designer to compare the two. A really good feature that Designer is missing is the ability to snap vector point handles.
  8. Hey, Really like working with AD, at least when it doesn't crash. Which is does now, a lot - like every other minute. Seems mostly when dealing with artboards. Also, to make a crash more annoying, the studio hides and the tools "undock". To re-launch AD after a crash I have to: 1. Launch AD. This launch however, will freeze. 2. Force quit AD. 3. Re-launch AD. 4. Re-dock Tools. 5. Reset Studio. 6. Open the work file. 6. Create a new document and add any shape to the canvas. (This is the only way for the layers in the studio to actually appear.) 7. Close the new document. 8. Get back to work, until it crashes again. 9. Rinse and repeat from step 1. Needless to say, this is EXTREMELY frustrating and time consuming. I would have posted this under bugs, but seems you have closed that forum. Aanyway.... When I sufficiently zoom out, I would really like to see the overlapping artboard labels hidden. There is no point in showing something that looks like this (attached image):
  9. Hello This feature was requested by me when discussing a bug, so now I'm requesting it here at the right place. At the moment, when a user has OSX in a non-english language, the OS offers a translation of certain common font styles like bold, italic, regular etc. In a few applications made by Apple such as Numbers or Pages, and also in the Font Book app, these translations are used when selecting fonts from the fontmenu. Most professional design applications however use the original (non-translated) names in the font selection. At this moment, Affinity applications use the translated names, even though the rest of the user interface is English. I personally think the way OSX translates font styles is quite primitive, and I often encounter fonts where half of the styles are translated in Dutch, while the other half are not translated because the typedesigner chose non-traditional names for these styles. Other design-related applications ignore the OSX translations and use the original style names, which is more practical in a professional environment. As long as Affinity doesn't offer application wide translation, I personally think it's better for Affinity to ignore the OSX translations, because we now get a inconsistent user interface with two languages. I'm looking forward to hear how you think about this.
  10. For pixel layers in Affinity Designer, and later on for Affinity Photo for Windows, you absolutely must include the feature where if you hold SHIFT while drawing with a brush or an eraser, it constrains the angle to 90 degrees. This was BY FAR my biggest gripe with the PhotoPlus software. Just a simple little UX feature that Photoshop has had pretty much forever that PhotoPlus never had, and it drove me INSANE. I'm very, very excited for both Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo (moreso Affinity Photo than Designer), but that excitement will be diminished quickly if this feature is not part of the UX for pixel drawing. Please note that this is different from the current pixel layer behavior, where you can click once, then press SHIFT and click again on the layer, and the angle draws a straight line from the original click point to the end click point. That behavior is good, and should remain. The problem is, you can't visually see or predict if your second click was on a perfect 90 degree angle. The behavior I'm talking about is when you click and hold down the mouse to start drawing (or erasing) WHILE holding down SHIFT simultaneously.
  11. Hi New users (or demo users) of AP ask again and again where they can find the inpainting brush - and that's only the ones bothering to create a forum account for that question. I think it would help a lot if it was the default tool of the healing group.
  12. Hi there, firstly, affinity Designer is simply amazing!! I do apologise for this question if it has already been answered, I did have a look through the pages and never saw it. I want to know if Affinity designer would ever have pre built in design templates for UI and Icon Design? I create a lot of iOS and Android icons and design user interfaces for mobile apps also, it would be super cool if Affinity had a preset iOS, Mac OS and Android icon template as well as standardised UI frameworks built in to speed up my design process. If this is not a feature to be considered, is it possible for me to create these frameworks myself and have them stored ready to use when I need them? Thanks
  13. Hey guys, More UI work. Let me know what you think. https://www.behance.net/gallery/37180653/Android-Weather-App Cheers, Vlad
  14. It seems like Affinity is focusing a lot on features, which I guess is important for the competition, but it seems like as soon as something is done there's no polishing done. My absolute biggest problem right now is the export persona and how it doesn't save settings between exports, how has this been allowed to be broken for over a year? I'm currently trying to move over from Creative Cloud but things like this make it impossible.
  15. Update Dropdown What I did was think about components and what parts belong to what. And for this model to be clear from the UI / UX perspective, it means that the other colour options should be separated into their own panels due to their unique attributes. In my experience, I would recommend removing the colour wheel--it adds no functionality that the sliders can't provide and adds a level of complexity to maintain in the long run. I can't keep working for free, so, this is it from me. ----- Previous -----
  16. Hi, I often have problems to read the histogram with overlapping curves. Its hard to see which channel is responsible for the white curves. I think Apple Photos is doing it better as it always shows the curve outlines in the channel color.
  17. Hi guys, Latest project made entirely in affinity. Except the gif animation. https://www.behance.net/gallery/33966100/FoodJunky-Application-Design-Concept Cheers, Vlad
  18. Hi I looked at the FAQ list and this is a more hands-on subject, but it's still a real FAQ: Time and again new users ask in the questions forum * why they can't get the inpainting brush tool (and others) to work. The answer is: you have a wrong layer selected. I'm quite sure the question arises so often because some adjustments (like levels) create a correction layer without the user noticing. So it also affects people who aren't actively using layers yet. Feature request: could you add a warning when people try to use inpainting on a wrong layer? * and this are the ones bothering to register in the forum and start a thread
  19. (not a feature, a simple change) I LOVED that affinity assumes you don't want to screw with typography during transforms, so that shift isn't required to constrain XY during transform. But then it blows that by being inconsistent on shape or curve transforms, which does my head in. This would be a simple change to make consistent across the board, and I can't see any good reason to not. Thanks again for this great app.
  20. This keeps popping up in Questions - which also means a lot of people give up without asking: When somebody wants to download the example pictures on the welcome screen, the red x can be confusing and the blue line around the picture (status bar) is easy to overlook, not least because it takes some time to start filling.
  21. Here's something to consider to enhance UX on Affinity products: Current situation: Currently all objects have 2 ways to be rotated: the blue handle at the top of the bounding box via hovering near a corner handle. Currently there exists no way to adjust a shapes Stroke attributes directly on the object itself. Idea: Remove the rotation functionality, since it is redundant, and turn the top handle into a UI control for setting Stroke weight, or perhaps a pop-up for any number of Stroke or even Shape attributes, DIRECTLY on the canvas object. Benefit: Working directly on the object and not having to rely on palettes makes the workflow much smoother and quicker, specially on mobile devices with smaller screens, where physical size is still a limiting factor, as well as for editing while in full screen, hidden studio palette mode. As professional creative apps transition into a multi-touch and stylus enabled operating systems (iPad Pro, ahem), users will be expecting to interact with objects directly on screen, not via abstract palettes. This setup will be friendly for Pencil input. However, this same directness of on-canvas edibility while on limited screen real estate is of benefit on current laptop workflows as well with traditional mouse and Wacom0style input as well. Thanks for your consideration.
  22. I did a search on feature requests on slices, and didn't really see anything on this or in the roadmap. I did see a post that there is more to come for Exporting Personal, but here is a feature(s) I've come to want while working with AD. In Export Personal (AD), if you create multiple slices, they are literally all over the design, yet we have a palette dedicated to the management of those slices. I would suggest that the palette be the "controller" of showing and hiding slices created by a simple selection(s). So, instead of slices constantly cluttering the design, with only corner anchor points being the highlight a slice is selected, hide the slice unless that slice is selected within the palette. This would greatly clear up the interface and provide good UX. Especially since you already have to select the slice that you want to export, this would give clear visual feedback of what a user is exporting without all the clutter of other slices. In addition, to further enhance this, by selecting multiple slices within the palette, it could group slices as a composite export selection. This would allow us to define potential elements of export through slices, without literally having to create every possibility. See attachment. So, since the slices palette already is the determining factor of what is getting exported, and if we hide the slices unless selected, then being able to select multiple elements for different variations of exports would be wonderful as a composite of those selected slices. If anything, at least hide the slices' bounding boxes unless it is selected within the slices palette. Otherwise, it can get very unruly.
  23. Hello guys, Do you have any plans to do like Adobe and go the UI design + Prototyping way? http://blogs.adobe.com/creativecloud/introducing-project-comet-a-new-tool-for-designing-and-prototyping-user-experiences/ Although Adobe is clearly looking in Sketch's way by doing this, bringing prototyping directly inside UI design is a very nice approach. This looks like something that Affinity Designer could eventually do. Or maybe Affinity Publisher... or both. What are your impressions?
  24. I think I had mentioned this one time before awhile back, but would it be possible to (sorry to compare, but like Photoshop) preserve the appearance of fonts (not expanding to curves) in a doc until a layer is selected, instead of discarding all missing fonts upon opening a document? That's something that would be nice for our web developers, so that they can tell what's what without having to install every font to get started.
  25. Duplication is Command + J, Grouping is Command + G, which I find used a lot, yet they are “zoned” on opposite sides of the keyboard due to reach of each key with one hand (while the other is on the mouse or drawing tablet). Workflow commands like duplication, grouping, copy, paste would be much better UX wise to keep commands that are common to one side of the keyboard. (imo) So, suggestion is to make Command + D the default duplication shortcut.
