  1. The description for this forum is "Post your fantastic designs for all to see". Well I don't claim that this is a fantastic design, but it is (to me) an interesting experiment… I was troubleshooting a file for someone else who couldn't see why an element in their design was transparent, when the transparency tool clearly said 'none'. That got me thinking about the number of different ways in which an object can be made transparent in AD - I thought of 8 examples, and I suspect that there are others! Some are a little convoluted, but most probably have their place at one time or another. The experiment shows me just how versatile AD is, but I think that comes with a cost: If I didn't know how the transparency had been applied to each of my 8 squares, it would be quite a task to figure out the various methods used - especially to a newcomer to vector graphics, or Affinity. Can you find other ways that I've not discovered? Opacity Experiment.afdesign
  2. How to make white default background transparent for PNGs?
  3. I need help to get my small brain round this... I have drawn a vector of a wind turbine outline. I am wanting to finally produce a png with the transparent shape of the turbine "punched through" a white foreground, if that makes sense. I can't work out how best to achieve this. Help appreciated. Pete
  4. Love to be able to treat the line of a transparency as something that could be curved and manipulated with the node tool. If this is something that will be addressed by the gradient mesh feature that's coming, never mind! :)
  5. What's the best way to clone/heal on an image that isn't fully opaque? For example, if I wanted to remove the splat from the attached file. I can use the Inpainting Brush tool as it preserves transparency, however depending on the image the inpainting tool doesn't always work, so I'm looking for a way to manually choose the clone source (for example with the Clone Brush tool, the Healing Brush tool or the Patch tool). However, those tools multiply the transparency making the cloned area darker.
  6. I'm having difficulty exporting a simple design as a PNG file & keeping the transparency that I want. The output files has a white solid non-tranparent background. Why is this? I was expecting it to be transparent & show up as a greyed out chequerboard. But it doesn't, I assume I have to check a box somewhere in the process, but can't find one that's relevant. Could someone point me in the right direction please.
  7. It would be useful to be able to preview which areas are affected, essentially as if the blend curves were a regular alpha mask. I'm talking about offering the standard mask display options, like as a BW image, quick mask overlay, marching ants and so on. Another useful display mode for displaying masks, which is currently not supported, would be the content being masked composited on 50% gray, like most video color grading programs offer.
  8. Hello everybody, I'm relatively new to Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo and I'm just sitting in on those very useful programmes (before, I figured out Photoshop as a layman). Now, I want to add linear transparencies to one of my pictures on a flyer on two borders but I just can add it on one of the four borders of my picture. Every time when I click somewhere else on my picture, I just can work on one and the same tranparency. Well, is there any possibility to add another linear one on the same picture? I also know, that there are alternative possibilities, e.g. to add a circular transparency or so, but I rather need the linear ones. Thank you!
  9. As a long-time user of Photoshop (boo down with the cloud looking for an alternative) and Corel painter, one feature that Affinity designer would benefit from is the “lock layer transparency” tick box option. I have only played around with Affinity Designer for a day – there is probably a way of doing this with masks, however, I use lock transparency layer alll the time for blocking out silhouettes then paint within the layer. Also there is no support for TGA’s format in designer or photo – still widely used in the games Industry for texture creation.
  10. I love affinity so far but for a digital painter there is one very fatal flaw. I need the ability to lock layer transparency to paint, not just through the brush tool, but for every tool.. It would be a really needed feature for painters like me coming from Photoshop.

    AD 1.5.4: GIF transparency?

Is it me or are exported selections in GIF format supposed to have a transparent background when thus selected? I keep getting white.. I'm using AD 1.5.4. Cheers, Binc.
  12. I just purchased Designer, and am very pleased with smoothness of the software, but I have big problem with exporting into eps format. It turns out that exporting it into eps rasterizes some effects like transparencies, conical gradient etc. It says: "Some areas will be rasterised". I really need to resolve this matter since have a ton of clients expecting editable ai/eps files to deliver.
  13. I'm pretty sure that in the past I exported PNGs from Designer with a functional alpha. Using the latest version, that doesn't seem to work anymore. Any ideas?
  14. I would be very happy if this Transparency tool would be introduced in Affinity Photo toolset, which is currently available in Affinity Designer allows work with Pixel layer partially changing its transparency. With working with internal partial layers, which have been selected from base texture. This will be a unique feature of this powerful software! Thnx :)
  15. In Affinity Photo, I'd like the same functionality as Photoshop's Layer>Layer Mask>From Transparency. It takes the transparency of an image and converts it to a layer mask. It's SUPER helpful when you need to extract either the transparency, or the underlying image as separate images.
  16. Where can I get such a tool or filter? For arbitrary translucency  see attach img - Corel Photo-Paint *any help would be appreciated
  17. It is not possible to give a transparency effect (from any direction not uniform) on an object more than once. However, we need to make multiple transparencies on an object.
  18. Hello... I know that beta builds carry with them the risk of things like this happening, so this isn't a complaint, just an FYI. While using the latest Affinity Designer Beta build (26820) on the latest El Capitan Developer Beta build (15A244d), attempting to use the transparency tool results in a crash of Affinity Designer Beta. Happy to provide more details to help if needed. Thanks for your amazing products and even more amazing and prompt support! Serif rocks! ~ PixelPoetix
  19. I was trying to figure out how to blend an image onto a background as described in this thread. I thought it could be done in AD by applying a gradient transparency to fade out the left and right edges, rasterizing the result and then applying a second gradient transparency to fade out the top and bottom edges, but the second transparency didn't seem to 'take' (I got an orange line, instead of the expected blue line with transparency nodes) and I got a crash when I tried to undo it. Here are my steps: 1. Place a large image on the page 2. Place a smaller image on top 3. Drag across the small image with the Transparency Tool 4. Adjust the transparency profile to make it opaque in the middle 5. Rasterize* 6. Drag from top to bottom of the small image with the Transparency Tool 7. Undo The final step produces an 'Unhandled Exception' error. *Why does the menu option say "Rasterise..."? The ellipsis makes it look as though the user is going to be presented with a dialog, either for selecting options or simply to confirm the command.
  20. What about divide the border and main object color to be able disable both these colors without focus on them? If i want to disable border color and main color is focused, i have to swtich them as first and disable them. Problem is there is a lot of useless clicks when creating an UI and trying some object with or without color etc.
  21. More transparency types would be a nice thing to have such as bitmap and noise based transparencies.

    pasting into text boxes

When I paste text into a text box created with the Frame Text Tool, the glyphs render with a white background rather than appearing with a transparent background. The white background only appears behind the glyphs themselves, like a highlight in a word processor (see image). This seems to happen only when pasting text in from the clipboard - not when entering text directly. I have just installed the updated Affinity 1.5.1. I'm not sure if this bug is new with the update, or was also present in previous versions. Andrew text-background-bug.tiff
  23. I work with png files with transparency. Currently, the only way I know to make an image with transparent edges is to select part of a non-transparent image, cut it out, and paste it in a new image. But once it's there, I cannot make more parts of it transparent. Is there a way to use normal drawing tools to edit the alpha channel of an image? (This is not the same as drawing with transparency, as that only affects the SOURCE alpha, not the destination (background) alpha). What I'd like to do is be able to directly change the background's alpha layer and paint "transparency" onto an image. I've tried drawing with only the alpha channel visible, but it didn't work. Any advice is appreciated. Great job on Affinity Photo - I love the updates. - Jeff
  24. Is there a way to use the transparency tool to only apply on the fill or just the stroke of the object… I cannot seem to find a checkbox or setting for this to only affect a particular attribute. Thanks!
