There is a fatal flaw in the design for Symbols. There currently is no way to recover edited symbols from an older version of a file by pasting them over to a new file. This means that symbols that were edited with the syncing button turned off, are copied in as the regular version of the symbol. Steps to reproduce Create an ellipse and turn it into a pie Convert this ellipse into a symbol Save the file Create a copy of the file from step 3 Place another symbol in the file Disable symbol syncing Change the angles of the pie for the symbol in step 5 (and optionally scale the symbol down for recognisability) Copy the edited symbol and paste it into the original file (which didn't have the edited symbol). Notice how the symbol is brought in and disregards any changes to it 2023-01-11 16-41-21.mp4

I ran into an issue where, if you duplicate symbols after applying an effect from another layer/ symbol/ group, the symbol is no longer duplicated as a symbol. Instead, it becomes a group. The bug is displayed towards the end, in the screencast, I also show that this wouldn't happen otherwise and that it is caused by the layer effect, not by the disabled symbol syncing. The bug part starts at 1:10. 2023-01-12 12-55-34.mp4 Steps to reproduce 1. Create a symbol 2. Duplicate the symbol 3. Disable syncing symbols 4. Add an effect to either a copy of the symbol or to an altogether different object 5. Drag the effect from to another copy of the symbol 6. Duplicate the symbol (from step 5) in the layers panel 7. Notice how the copy of the symbol becomes a group Also note that at 1:10 in the video, you'll see me dragging an effect of the symbol to the other symbol. Designer for some reason sometimes won't accept this. That's another bug, which since the two are related, I also report it in the same bug report. Workflow in which this occurs I have outlines applied to my symbols and to align them over other objects, I sometimes turn off the effect. It is then easier to re-enable the effect by dragging it from another symbol. I also tend to copy symbols if they are rotated, so I can preserve their rotation.

Randomly, symbol unlink attributes for me automately. To relink them, I have to delete them all and redo everything again. This is absolutely not cool. What I do is avoid using them from the beginning. I believe this is a major bug that can't be fixed in the near future. Since this bug exist since the symbol is born, I eventually believe it is incurable, because it is a part of the symbol. So I think poviding a method which can restore/relink the attributes of symbols will solve the problem without fixing the bug.

Layer symbols are not displayed correctly, if you hover over the symbol icon (the crossed dot), Designer displays a pop-up that reads: "layer", whereas the layer is in fact a symbol. Also, the name of the symbol in the symbol studio and layers studio still reads "layer", instead of "symbol" as symbols would. Also note that if I delete all the layers, the symbol in the symbol studio will read group, as opposed to "symbol". See video, should be self-explanatory. 2023-01-12 13-01-13.mp4

In my setup (Affinty photo, designer & publisher, 1st and 2nd version) the font Symbol is set as default. Usually this means only that I have to change it to have something legible in the textbox, but sometimes it appears also in other interfaces where I can't change it. I can't seem to find the setting for the default font. Does anybody have a clue as how to fix it? /Fabian

Could you please add a Select > Select Same > Symbol option? That would make it much easier to work with them.

Hi. Previously there are request about symbol management here https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/45462-assetsymbol-management/ Well, it might be harder/ takes longer to implement. But for next update, can you guys at least making a way to delete multiple symbols at once (from symbol library). Currently doing right-click -> delete -> confirm is very tedious for me as I can have like 100 - 150 symbols at once. Thanks.

Hi If you put a artistic text on a curve and put this into a symbol, and if after you scale this symbol the artistic text font follow. The only way to do it is to outline the font but it's become possible to update if needend. Can you fix this ? Thanks and happy 2022!

Greetings. I'm working with a 58MB affinity publisher file in Affinity Publisher (version 1.10.1), the document has 27 pages. It keeps crashing when I move, copy, paste or remove Symbols. Any good pointers to what I could do to avoid it crashing? *(other than stopping moving, copying, pasting and removing Symbols)? The symbols are very simple letterforms, such as the letter M, very low in vertices count. In another attempt to work around this problem, I created a brand new affinity publisher file.. and once I started using symbols it crashed.. It seams that affinity publisher isn't able to handle symbols: I'm filing a bug report. Cheers and thx!

I would love to be able to edit the text content of a symbol but not the style of the text. Would be useful for buttons with different calls-to-action as well as UI where a bunch of repeated content like user profiles needs unique titles.

Hello, often I am using the same layer, e.g. a Text, in multiple instances in the project. I may use it as a mask multiple times for layering effects on it and use have the original as a base as well. Currently I make multiple copies of that layer. But if I want to then edit that layer, e.g. change font, I have to do it in every copy of it separately. That is time-consuming for Text layers, and borderline unusable for pixel layers. I wonder how others deal with this workflow. Is there something like Linked layers or Instances or Symbols that we find in Affinity Designer? Can we create a live instance of a layer to use as a mask alongside the original?

Maybe a simple but very helpful feature: I am working a lot with symbols. There I place not only elements and artboards with guidelines as templates, I also use it to keep a good naming-system stay consistent through the documents and export (as a predefined name for the export persona). As I work with longer names I have 2 main probles: the symbol preview shortens the names so much, I can not read them anymore. while hovering over the symbols the name does not appear as a quickinfo. so what is left is guessing the standard symbol view is very limited as it only helpful, when you use only few of them. when I have f.e. 30, I can not tell which one is which My suggestions would be to have a list view for the symbols, where I can see and change the names (like layers with bigger preview) and include a filter or at least sort possibility. Like that we could see the symbols in a specific order. — Furthermore as a deluxe version it would be great to see also at a glace if the symbols are text, artboard, vector, image etc … But this would be only the cherry on the top. Looking forward to your thoughts.

Hi everyone, I just bought Affinity photo on the iPad Pro and I was trying to insert an Arabic Unicode symbol to add it to a picture but instead of pasting it, a missing icon is shown. I don’t understand why Affinity photo don’t support that while others app on iOs like Procreate, Pixelmator or photoshop do...Can someone help me ? thank you.

Hello, thank you in advance for your help! Here's my problem: whenever I move, scale, rotate, or delete one instance of a symbol, that change applies to all instances of that symbol. I avoid it by using the layer panel to select the symbol I want to transform, instead of selecting it directly in the artboard. Additionally, this seems to be specific to this one file; in a different file I am able to transform one instance of a symbol without it affecting the rest. Is there a setting or something that I can turn off to stop this? I attached a screen capture of the issue. Each of the orange spheres is a symbol. I was unable to attach my affinity file. Every time I tried to upload the file it would start to upload, pause, and then give a pop-up box saying "-200", and then show that the upload failed. Let me know if there's any more info I can provide! Thanks, Emily record_000001.avi

I'm working with an old PDF file which has a lot of mathematics in it, and I'm running into problems with the symbol font. For instance, the following equation: Is being imported as: As you can see, most of it comes through properly but for some reason the the parentheses in the Symbol font do not. (The other parentheses are in Times, and they're fine.) Is there a fix for this other than manual correction of each formula? At least a way to search for these unsupported characters?

Is it possible to relink text edited in a symbol? Even just changing color make them out of sync.

When I try to copy a layer that has a symbol on it to another file, the app will crash and exit as soon add I press paste. The only way around to be able to copy paste the layer will be to turn off the symbol, and then copy paste the layer to the other file and then make the symbol there. Does this happen with any symbol, or only a certain one? Does this happen in any document (including a blank, new one?), or only in a specific document? Are you copying from one file to another file within the same Affinity app, or are you pasting the symbol into a different Affinity app? Are you using Windows or Mac? No it happens on iPad. I posted in Rhee wrong place, sorry. This happens with every symbol an in every document, even on a new blank one. I'm copying from one file to another.

Hello there, I put together a design comp to try out various logo and tagline variations for a documentary film I am creating. The logo is a symbol, as is the tagline. From each of those, I created various thumbnails with different backgrounds and nested the symbols into new thumbnail symbols. Those resulting thumbnails are then used in a design comp on another artboard that shows them in the context of a webpage, in this case a mockup of Netflix so I can compare against the branding of other films and see how my ideas stand out in context. So far, so good. I update the logo, the change cascades into the thumbnails, which in turn cascade into the comp. To save each variation, I created a snapshot (Logo 1). I then updated the logo in the source symbol, adjusted it's size and position in each thumbnail, and saved a snapshot (Logo 2). My intention is to create snapshots for each logo so I can recall them, export them, and compare the comps side-by-side to decide which logo to move forward with. This is my workaround until Designer has something akin to Layer Comps. Works great... ...EXCEPT that when I restore any of the previous snapshots, nothing changes. The symbols do not go back to their previous state, rendering this workflow useless. I believe this to be a bug, but I am open to it being user error if you can show me what I am doing wrong! I am happy to provide anything you need as far as examples. I really need this workflow so I don't have to create a new document every time I want to try out a different logo variation! I personally tend to do a lot of variations and iterations.

Windows 10 Home 1903, Designer 1.7.2.471. See attached GIF. When I have some symbol instances, setting one to be invisible makes all of the others invisible. However, de-syncing via the Symbols panel, setting some to be invisible and then re-syncing, allows me to make some invisible as a ‘set’ but the others can be made invisible individually. Is this expected behaviour, and if so why? Also, there’s no way for me to know - looking at the Layers panel - which symbols have been de-synced. It might be nice for a symbol to tell me - in the Layers panel - that it has been de-synced in some way (maybe a little ‘de-synced’ glyph or something). I know there is a little dashed orange bar to the left of the de-synced elements when I open the symbol but I don’t really want to have to open each symbol to check them.

I'm trying to do Geometry operations with symbols but they seem to be greyed out or unavailable. ---Repro steps--- 1) Create a shape using the rectangle tool (M) 2) Go to view/studio/symbols 3) Create a symbol from the rectangle tool 4) Drag this newly created symbol onto the canvas multiple times 5) Select several symbols and note that you are unable to add, subtract, intersect, divide, combine Is there a way to do these things with symbols?

Hi community, I'm working on a new tutorial and would like to know if it's possible to use the perspective tool of Affinity Photo non-destructively. Background of my question I use Affinity Designer symbols to project an image from a flat view (for printing purposes) to a perspective view in a mockup. In my last tutorial I use a parallel projection with the shear and rotate tool in the transformation panel. Now I would like to use the Perspective Tool of Affinity Photo. Wish Affinity Designer had a perspective tool. I just want to change the image in the flat view without touching the perspective view again. Any suggestions/ ideas? Norbert

HI, I’d like to know how I can add an object to an existing symbol. I have a few instances of a symbol in an i,mage, and I want to add some extra detail. How can I do this? If I draw an object inside a symbol’s container, all the symbols in the image are not updated. How can I make it so that they are? Thanks.

It would be great if AP would come with a similar "Symbol" functionality as AD. Could as well be called "personal graphics library" ... consisting out of (single or multilayer) documents that could be inserted in various documents as "instances" ... (references - internal as well as external). I could think of a multitude of situations where such a functionality would be extremely useful (Logosd, Watermarks, linked content from externam sources etc). And since the general code for such a functionality is already implemented in AD ... and will be essential in any publishing product in the future ... Just my 2 cents ;-), Cheers, Timo
