  1. In Affinity Design for Windows I created a shape and gave it an outline. I then I messed around and put text on its path. It changed it so that now - there is no colored stroke/no line and I cannot re-add a stroke or fill it. What am I doing wrong? Windows 10 Latest Design update 3/2018
  2. Is it possible to create a shape from an outline in Affinity Designer? For example if I have a straight line with a set stroke width of 12px which isn't a "closed shape" like it's needed for certain printing techniques: is there some way to create a closed shape from a line with stroke, in this simple case 2 points (line from A to B), to have a shape without outline, with 4 points and a width of 12px? Without doing that completely manually? Edit: Ok, forget it. Found the option in the layer settings via the upper menu. At first I looked in the context menu of the layer, which didn't help much.
  3. Hi guys. I create a shape by Pen tool. Is there a way to make a dotted /dashed line around it? Thanks
  4. Hey Everyone, I'm using the projects in the workbook. I was learning the freehand tool and it is not working properly. When I try to use it, I draw the selection you can see in the "desired" pic below. However, when I release, I end up with a semi-circle which does not look like what I drew. It also doesn't match what's in the book. Has anyone had this problem? Am I doing something incorrectly? Please help! I'm using the most current updated Mac OS X. I've tried closing other programs, reinstalling affinity, and all the other usual solutions.
  5. Hi, I'm new with Vector drawing and rather new to AD. What I'm trying to achieve: (https://www.vecteezy.com/vector-art/95407-white-abstract-geometric-vector) What would be the best way to draw these triangles? Steps and Problems encountered when drawing triangles with the pen tool in Polygon mode: After each closed polygon a new curve layer is created, which makes it impossible to reuse a nodes and edges as part of another triangle To use a triangle that is created through creating surrounding triangles, a polygon has to be drawn explicitely where each node is on top of others To move nodes, all layers have to be selected and before moving a node I have to select join curves. This however is forgotten as soon as I select another layer I've also tried using the triangle tool, but this doesn't make it easier, as I'll have to move more nodes around afterwards. Maybe this is the way one has to deal with it, but I was hoping, someone could recommend a better workflow. Thanks in advance.
  6. I want to draw a shape like you can see in the first image. The black stroke should go around the shape but interrupt at multiple points. The filling should be everywhere within that shape. I use shapes with the same background color which cover the stroke part (second image) but that does not always work. Is there a better way to do this? I know I can use the "erase" blend mode but I think this causes rasterization on export. If anyone knows how to draw a shape like in the first image please let me know... I dont want to draw a separate curve and place it on top the grey shape. It has to be one shape for easy editing.
  7. Hi I started working with Affinity a while ago and have to admit I am not a professional designer. But in my Spare time I like being creative. Though I'm trying to fit Text into a shape. But I do not want to have it aligned or set on the outline. I would like to fill the whole shape with a word. In Corel I did this with the Envelope tool but I just can not figure out how to do this in Affinity. I could have sworn I have seen this once in a tutorial and it was just a basic function but maybe I'M mistaken. The picture below shows the basic idea I really would appreciate the help
  8. How do I prevent child shapes from resizing when moving ther parent shape's boundaries?
  9. I am using the pen tool in Affinity Designer to create shapes, and the default stroke weight is 0.2 pt. However, I primarily use the stroke weight of 5 pt. Can I change the default to 5 pt?
  10. I'd like to be able to have my text stretch to fill a shape. Like when you get text to follow a path, but I want one side of the text to stay straight and the other side to follow the curve. Eg the text sits on a line, but the top of the text is stretched up in an arc. Is this possible ? Thanks
  11. Is there a way to enter height/width values for shapes numerically? I need a diamond shape that is exactly 127x127 pixels.
  12. Hello Apologies if this has been asked before. If so someone could point me in the direction of a tutorial video Attempting to recreate the woman in this shape on the attached image Really not sure how to go about it. Trying to get images behind (or on top) of my pixel layer within a designed shape Cheers! -Cunningham
  13. Hi there! I need an advice in the following task: I want to have the exact same corner, that I have on the left side of this L-shape, on the inner (right) side of the shape. Can you provide a simple way to achieve this? Cheers, Robin.
  14. Hey everyone, I'm quite new to Affinity Designer and have come across the following issue: I'm trying to fill different shapes with patterns. Since I haven't been able to find any preset geometric fill patterns that ship with Affinity, nor a pattern fill feature, I've resorted to: 1. Select the shape 2. Activate the Fill Tool 3. Change Fill Type to Bitmap 4. Use an image texture to fill the shape However, when I CTRL + C on one shape and then CTRL + SHIFT + V on another shape in order to copy that fill, with the same orientation and scale, it seems like the bitmap/texture then gets transformed to the orientation/size of the target shape. I attached a screenshot to demonstrate what happens when I copy the fill from the left shape to the right. How can I get the behaviour that I want, i.e. have the fill get transferred from shape A to shape B without changing the orientation/scale/shear of the fill texture? Also, is there a vector pattern fill in Affinity Designer that I may simply have overlooked? Thanks a lot
  15. Wondering how to collapse/flatten these elements into separate standard vector shapes. I'm exporting them as separate .svg pieces for a 3D project but those curves/masks or whatever they are are causing issues. I can't Rasterize because I lose the vector nature of the layer. I didn't make the file, I was given an eps file which I brought into Designer to break out into .svg layer files. Still pretty new with Designer.
  16. Hi all, I would really like to be able to apply a corner style to curves, similar to the way I can already apply it for a rectangle. In fact, it would be great if I could apply it to any shape! ^_^
  17. Firstly, I wanted to take a moment to thank Serif and their programmers for making such a wonderful piece of software. I'm looking forward to one day eventually making the jump from Adobe but I thank you for giving me hope. I already purchased and strapped in for the ride as I know that you lot are going to accomplish amazing things. This is all just constructive criticism and feedback from someone who wants to be able to use your product in a regular and professional way. A feature you really need to put towards the top of the update pile is the Shear/Skew tool for text and objects. Shearing and Skewing fonts and objects are things I do a lot of when I'm working with Adobe Illustrator. It's not a matter of "if" I use it because I always end up using it to some degree at one point or another when I'm working on different projects. For those who might not know the tool by name but know it in function. Shearing/Skewing Shapes Tutorial Shearing/Skewing Fonts Tutorial This is a type of feature I would need to have included in the Affinity package if I were to ever make the jump from Adobe. The tool is simply too valuable for me as a designer. This being said, Affinity DOES include a transform menu (props where earned) within their software which gives you slight adjustment to what objects and font you're working with. The problem is it simply does not work in a way which is smooth and freeform like it exists in Illustrator. I cannot use transform in the same way I can use Shear or Warp. I've included the above links to give the programmers and the other members of the community the level of functionality I am looking for with regards to a Shear/Skew tool for the Affinity Designer. I would hope this is something which is actively being pursued as it's certainly something that would be essential. Thank you in advance for reading my thoughts and concerns and I wish you all success. All The Best, -Copernicus
  18. In my experiences I've found that when I want to edit multiple shapes of the same type (e.g. 10 rectangles) and apply a property across all of them (e.g. rounded corners at 100%) that when I select the 10 rectangles the only batch operations I can perform are generic (e.g. convert to curves). 1 selected rounded rectangle: 2 selected rounded rectangles: What would be great is if I select multiple shapes/paths/items of the same type, that I can then change the type's properties of all those selected items. Edit: To extend this functionality, I'd like expression modifiers (e.g "width: +50px") which would relatively modify each individually selected item's value. I may have 10 selected objects which have varying widths which I just want to increase 50px, rather than set them all to a uniform width.
  19. One feature Freehand used to have was the ability to paste shapes into text areas. I'd love to be able to design an icon or special bullet shape and then paste it into an artistic or frame text layer and have it flow according to the character/paragraph/tab rules. It's been many years since I last used Freehand, so I can't remember if it was possible to scale the shape when it was within the text area, but having some way to do that either by hand (or via the text area options, e.g. setting the font size) would be trés cool, indeedio. I would assume that any inline shape pasted into a text area should be controlled by the character properties (e.g. changing the font-size value would scale up or down based on the shape's height; changing the baseline up/down would move the shape in the text field up or down). Interested in hearing other ideas for development!
  20. I'd like to be able to set the ratio when drawing a rectangle so could be 4:3 or 16:9 or 16:3 or whatever. Is this possible? if so where do I find this option? Additionally I'd like to be able to create a fix sized shape. So when the shape tool is selected I could set the width/height and then just place the shape exactly with those dimensions. Again is this posisble? if so how do I do this?
  21. Hello guys, I am on Affinity Photo, making a shape (rectangle). I would like to make border with brush, so that it looks like it was hand-painted. But I only can do line border. I can adjust thickness, etc, but when I click Brush option, nothing happens. Any ideas on what I am missing or how to do it? THANK YOU SO MUCH for any tip or advise. Paul
  22. I'm currently learning Affinity Designer and saw a tutorial for making some icons in Adobe Illustrator. I decided to try making some to use and learn different tools and processes. In the tutorial they show how to make a shadow of the icon by moving to the side and using 'Blend Options' to create many steps so that it looks like a continuous shadow and not a duplicate shape behind (In the hyperlinked tutorial on Icon 1, Step 5). Just a shape behind, not continuous. Continuous. What I'm trying to achieve. So basically, I am asking to see what is the best way to achieve this in Affinity designer? Is there a similar feature available to that in Illustrator?
  23. I apologize if this is a common topic, but I searched and none of the solutions have worked. I made a shape using the pen tool, and when I try to fill it, it ends up doing this (see photo). The photo is zoomed in because I can't show the entire project yet, but that's not important. Why does it do this and how can I fill the shape? I don't know why there's straight lines going through the shape, I didn't put them there... they appeared when I tried to fill the entire shape. Any advice please? This is a recurring issue and it's really preventing me from moving forward. Thanks!
  24. Ok this is starting to drive me nuts. I've been using Affinity Designer for at least 6 months for various small non-professional projects and it's been fantastic. I'm trying to create a drawing of the side panel of a bar-top arcade game I'm building which I'll print out and use as a cutting template. I've drawn two shapes and want to join/ add them. The two shapes have given every indication of having snapped together, but every time I select them using the move tool and hitting the add button it groups the two shapes/ curves rather than adding them and losing the line between them leaving just the outline. I've used add to create the top shape, but these two won't add together. Ultimately I could live with this, but I really want to put a radius corner on the bottom right corner of the top shape where it connects to the bottom. Can anyone explain where I might be going wrong? I'm using v 1.5.2 on a Mac (10.12.3) in the draw persona.
