  1. I'm struggling with shading the attached Designer v2image and I'm not sure how to proceed. Hopefully, the Native AfDesign file uploads correctly, so people can download and view what I have done so far. The image is of a brass horse casting with a lot of shiny reflections. I wanted to create a nice version for my wife. I outlined the front horse (nearest to the camera) and left the black outlines showing for now, so they'd be visible. I'm not planning on including the horse in the background, due to the awkward orientation. I stopped partway through, after outlining the major horse components because I realized I lacked a decent strategy for adding in all the complex reflections, shading, etc. I could use some sage advice or guidance from folks on this forum on how to proceed, or even a few examples. I figure if I can achieve a realistic effect on this subject, I will be well on my way to shading other complex subjects. I hope this is appropriate use of the "Share Your Work" forum. If not, please let me know. BTW, a photograph of the horse casting is on the background layer for reference and can be turned on and off (assuming it downloads intact).   2. All brushes are made with raster geometric shapes (on vector curves) over which I applied various opacities, blur intensity levels and other effects. I’ve been using them for vector illustration as shading brushes with iPad Pro, Apple Pencil and the “vector brush tool”. Max tail offset is 600px. Width is set at 100px for all brushes (modify according to your needs). They can be used for anything with no worry. All the best! shading brushes.afbrushes
  3. Hi, is there anybody that can help me? I'm trying to apply a shade on a white shape with a colored background. In publisher it looks ok, the pdf result is like shown in the attached pict. I already tried changing the parameters as radius, offset, intensity and type of fusion, the result is always the same. Thanks

  6. Hi there! I need to draw a walnut in black and white for a tattoo however i dont know the best way to do the shading as it has some very strange shapes, is it possible to have more than one gradient in a shape or should i do individual shapes, any advice would be much appreciated, Thanks!!!

  8. I generally use Affinity Designer for producing simple icons as a pay-once alternative to Adobe Illustrator. After getting pretty ok at doing so, I want to branch out and start making digital art. I have learned mostly just by fiddling and listening to some youtube channels, but also asking others who make digital art. Most of whom use pixel tools to produce the semi-realistic shading and effects. After trying that (and getting some ok results for my first attempt - first image) I wanted to try just making pure vector art using gradient shading / layered gaussian blurs (second image). Neither of these images are particularly good, or complete, but ok enough to encourage me to try and improve. Also the pixel method result in like 1000 layers of small pixel elements with multiple layer effect and small amounts of transparency, whereas the vector version was quicker. So I am asking if someone could help with figuring out how to make a decent human face using only vector tools. I know (heard from others) that lips and eyes can be pretty hard and that generally one should learn how to draw first - prior to trying to shade digitally ( to better understand lighting and such). I ask specifically about vector tools because often the crisp nature of vector elements often look specifically out of place. I can post a layer by layer (only 23 so far) for the vector face to better document how I worked up to where it is.
  9. Hi all, For my artwork I have two pixel-layers, both containing the colours of my drawing. I would like to apply shading on both layers simultaneously using the approach described on Vimeo (*). Basically: adding a sublayer, set to 'multiply' and doing the shading there with the brush tool. I've tried: - adding a nested layer to one of the color layers and add the shading there, this works great (but only for one layer) - adding a shading-layer on top of the two layers, works on both layers but also every layer underneath How to solve?   10. Hello everyone! When trying to light a scene, I see some limitations to the "Lighting Tool": There are steps between the different shadings creating an outline for seemingly each used color value. Is this an intended optimization? Is it just the way this tool is limited? Or is this a bug of some sort? I first thought it was a limitation of 8 bit documents, but even after using 16 or 32 bit, this doesn't improve. Best wishes, Shu
  11. This started off as a spooky road at night and ended up as a this.
  12. So I found myself wanting to come up with a basic stipple brush, of a more vector-style and less painterly variety. Going for that more retro-modern shading look inside of vectors that's quite popular these days. Pretty basic, but I think this is what I was going for! Works best sticking to applying with straight paths, no vector handles. The nice thing shading this way is you can vary the opacity and get quite a nice buildup on top of gradients. I threw together this trippy abstract to give them a go. :) Edit: Sorry, this post seems to have gotten mysteriously duplicated, and the attachment isn't showing up here consistently.   14. Im become somewhat good with shading but there are still a few more complex shapes that get me. 1. How would you create this shape (Picture Below) 2. How do you achieve the shaded/different colour look in the back of the ring shape. I was able to do it by creating a ton of layers by the shading never lined up perfectly. What is the easiest and best looking way to do it?
  15. Hi Folks, Not sure this post fits in anywhere on the forum but being as this place is full of really helpful experienced people I thought I would try it anyway. I have been playing around with a design (AD) for a t shirt I am looking at getting done. Would anyone out there be willing to have a look at my design and offer some "creative" feedback on how I can improve it. Every day is a learning day! Sorry if this post is not appropriate to the forum. Any chance a form could be set up on here for such exchanges between designers to share ideas? just a thought. Cheers Folks Mark
  16. Say you want you want to draw a crow bar, how would i shade it on the curved parts using the gradient tool. So far i know how to shade a circle or rectangle using the gradient feature. And designs ive done which needed shading on curves ive had to make a few seperate darker layers and then used a blur tool to make it look like a gradual shadow. Do any of you know how this can be done an easier way? Thanks in Advance
  17. Hi! I want to share with you this small set of pencils. Some of these tools feature Angle (Tilt) variance but you need a tablet that support it. Don't have so much inspiration today to add some samples, but will do it for sure later This set doesn't work on iPad because required settings are not yet there. It will work with proper textures once the matching of iOS/Desktop version has been completed. Hope you'll enjoy it! Happy sketching!   18. I've been focusing on shaing and coloring techniques in Affinity Designer lately. With this Blue Cobalt Shot Glass, I used gaussian blur, layer blending modes (Color Burn and Average) and opacity to acheive the effect that I was looking for. What methods would you use?   20. There are many different ways to shade your vector art this is one way you can use the gradient tools to define light and shadows on the surface of an object. Disclaimer: this my workflow and no means the only way you can achieve this effect.
