  1. It will be an awesome feature if you put a "Selection method according to attribute" which means when we need to Select Same color (Fill or Stroke), same opacity, or same appearance. It is so much helpful after tracing an image to select a range of colors. When working on a flyer or packaging design for production selecting similar color or select strokes that have same thickness or fill color to change together all those needs select with attribute option. Consider a special tool for those selection purpose with a bunch of option to rectify and narrowing selection range or Add all those features to the Move/ Selection tool.
  2. Hi I cannot seem to select this object - not sure why. No lock ? This is the latest beta 180555. I will attache file. Is there something I am missing? It has happened before on another project. video affinityproblem.afdesign
  3. I got a problem I got a photo and make a Selection on then I go to the other panel to duplicate to a new layer but doesn't work, sometimes duplicate but the hole photo even when the Selection is there can someone help me IMG_0014.MP4
  4. I’m sure I’m doing something obviously wrong but, despite a number of searches and videos, I just don’t seem to be able to find the answer. Yesterday, I was working on a photo of a home and improving the color of the grass. After applying the improvement and moving on, I realized I missed a piece of the grass and wanted to add to the original selection. Here’s what I did so far: - Selected the area using the selection tool - Added an adjustment layer for HSL and applied adjustments – adjustments were only applied to the selected area - Added an adjustment layer for contrast/brightness and applied adjustments – adjustments were only applied to the selected area - Moved on to other functions and then realized I missed a bit in the original selection Now, there doesn’t seem to be a way to expand the selection area and add it to the areas being adjusted by the HSL and contrast/brightness. I can call up the original selection, and when I try to add it appears to show a newly selected area, but the adjustment isn’t being applied. Sorry if this is obvious but I’m obviously missing something here.
  5. I am becoming familiar with Tonal Range Selections, and comparing those with manually established blending ranges, using a grey scale gradient for testing. The three Tonal Range options, Shadows-Highlights-Midtones, while quick, do not seem to allow selection of the entire tonal range of the image. The three selections each have feathering at one or more edges, the leave part of the image left out of the selection. I tried using the Refine Edge options, which reduce, but do not eliminate the issue. Thus, I proceeded to develop a similar technique, using Blend Ranges (with a total of 10, of 10% each, for a combined possible selection of 100%). For example, here's the first 10% range, with a green fill layer underneath. I appreciate the 'smooth transition' that might have been intended by the feathered Tonal Range Selections, but find the lack of a complete selection using the provided method problematic. Since the Macro functionality of AP is limited, but at least does allow recording Blend Ranges with the recent update (!) as part of a Macro, that's the tack taken. Ultimately, as macros do not allow renaming a "Spare Channel" (nor does the focus of the name field shift, when using the right-click 'rename' option), I hope that some of these concerns might be addressed. I tried adding a Keyboard shortcut for the Spare Channel without success. Being able to edit Macros in an offline editor would be great. But, even the copy-paste-delete methods available in the likes of PS would be quite helpful. If indeed there is not an adjustment to overcome the banding I demonstrate, I am not sure if AP users are aware of this Tonal Range Selection being incomplete. My searches on this Forum did not find such a topic. I own many photo editing programs, and RAW converters, and am enjoying exploring Affinity Photo, the stacking and panorama features in particular. The many video tutorials are most appreciated as well! 8x10-gradient-no-selections.afphoto
  6. I'm having difficulty copying a selection to a new layer. It's a kind of routine thing for making comps... I'm more used to PS and Affinity may work differently so can someone walk me through this please? Sorry if this is a simple question, but a forum search for "copy selection to new layer" did not offer any results and I couldn't see it under 'Help'.
  7. Hello! Please help! I’m trying to save as a jpg a selection with a transparent background. I want the object alone, without the black or white background. I did that once, but I’m unable to repeat the process. Frustrating! Your help requested, Please...
  8. Hi. All I'm trying to do is save a rectangular selection (made with marquee too) to a file. However when I follow the instructions, repeated below in blue, the only file type that available is "afselection". I don't know what that is, but all I want is to save it as a JPG or PNG file. Please advise. Thanks. To save a selection to a file: With a pixel selection in place, from the Select menu, select Save Selection. Adjust the dialog settings as required. Click Save.
  9. Hi! I am having a problem while trying to separate (remove) the background from the photo. After masking the subject and replacing a transparent (black in masking) background with a fill layer my selection (in this case me) seems to have a white glowing outline. In the picture below you can see it around the black coat and it is really visible when putting a black solid fill under the masked selection. You can see that in the refine section window the "glowing outline" is not visible, only once the mask is applied. Do you know how to fix/remove this issue? I haven't had it with my previous photos, it only started like 2-3 days ago. The glowing outline around me doesn't look good and therefore I would like to get rid of it. Thank you in advance for the help :) P.S. see the attached photos in full resolution to see the glowing outline problem.
  10. When I convert my closed path into selection by press selection icon and it shows selected whole pic with blue line and pixel selection invisible but still masked a closed area. I tried to do another path and worked as normal. What happened to the previous one? I tried repetitively still unable to address.
  11. I often create repeating patterns which (among other things) require dragging a selection of motif from the top to the bottom of square in order to create the repeat. I'll select the portion to be copied and moved (just below a guide line), create a new layer (cmd+J), and drag this below my other guide at the bottom. But when I do this, the edge of the motif has a shadow, as though the selection didn't fully "grab" the motif. Feathering and anti-aliasing is turned off. This seems like a huge bug (unless I'm doing something wrong, but then that wouldn't be intuitive).
  12. Hi guys, Is there any way to automatically create a vector shape based on a selection I have made inside Affinity designer? Thanks, Mario
  13. Hey there, I've been having some issues with the "Refine Edges" tool when it comes to selections. After carefully selecting my subject in the picture, I intended to refine my selection when I noticed that as soon as I clicked on the "Refine..." button, the edges of my selection became fuzzy and inaccurate right away, making my overall selection much worse. This happened without even altering the settings or painting with the brush. After spending plenty of time trying to refine the selection with the help of the "foreground" and "background" brushes the result was not much improved, so I had to resort to Photoshop in order to get the job done. Here you can clearly see the what happens: Recording.mov Now I'm aware of the low contrast in some of the edges which make the task more complicated, something moderators keep mentioning in similar posts forgetting that's often the case in real-life scenarios. However when I managed to get a nearly perfect selection on Photoshop, I realised that was just an excuse (not to mention the improvement "Decontaminate colors" makes, a feature currently lacking in Affinity Photo). You can find the original image and my results in Photoshop as a comparison below, as well as the .afphoto file with the original selection saved as a Spare Channel, in case you want to give it a try. I've seen several posts regarding this issue, but since no actual solutions where provided and the topics were just forgotten (as you can see here, here and here), I decided to post about it myself before having to unfortunately switch back to Photoshop for good. picture.afphoto
  14. I recently upgraded to MacOS Catalina. My refine edges seemed to start actingwonky after that. When I choose to refine, the red mask shows up as expected. When I draw along the edges, all seems okay until the app finishes. At that point, the mask disappears and the marching and are completely gone. If I click Apply anyway (without seeing the results), the marching ants reappear and show where refinement took place, but I have to hit refine again, in order to do more work. Also, the previews only work while the mask is visible. Is anyone else experiencing this? I've been using AffinityPhotofor years and I can work around this glitch but it really slows me down. Any help would be much appreciated.
  15. With CTRL+left click on a layer icon it is possible to create a selection from the contents of this layer. In PS (I know, AP is not PS...) you can use SHIFT or ALT as modifiers for adding to, subtracting from or intersecting with an existing selection. I would like to see this in AP, too. For adding two or more layers to a single selection there is at least a workaround: make a group from the layers you want the selection from and CTRL+left click the group layer icon to get a selection made of the "summed up" content of each of the grouped layers. However I haven't either figured out a way to realize the other operations or how to modify an existing selection with "selection from layer".

  17. Hi I'm other applications it is possible to dedicate certain tools to finger gestures. So for instance if I'm currently using the vector brush tool and then draw a line with my apple pen, I can select the line by dragging my finger on the canvas without first tapping the selection tool. This makes the work flow much more convenient and it feels more like iOS than desktop. Please add that to a upcoming release!
  18. Hi guys. I am using affinity designer, I have a few objects grouped, three text objects and a background image, from top to bottom, in that order in the layers palette. I can select any object by clicking it individually, or by selecting it in the layers palette, however when I drag across multiple objects I keep selecting the background layer, either in conjunction with the desired elements or instead of them. Is there any way to stop either an individual layer from being selectable or perhaps prevent any locked layer from being selectable? I am aware that being able to select locked layers is by design but for me it seems to cause more issues than it fixes, is there a way to stop locked layers being selectable? At the moment the only solution is to turn that layer off visually but I still need to see what I am working with just don't want it to be selectable. Thanks, Aero
  19. Hello everyone, i have a question i didn't found the answer yet. After selecting and refining selection and then output it as a new layer with mask i got this. Why is my selection without mask pixelated and ruined and how can i avoid that? Thank you very much
  20. I have been looking at ways to effectively mask things like trees and then adjust the background so you can increase contrast, gamma etc in the sky without affecting the foreground. I have tried Remask from Topaz which is pretty good but thought I would try Affinity which is my core image editor. MY METHOD Using the selection brush I make a loose selection of the sky around the trees I then invert the selection I then hit Refine Using the Matt brushes and foreground and background modes I then tidy up the selection so only the tree is selected Using a black background in the Refine tool the trees look pretty good (see attached) In fact a better result than I can achieve using Topaz Remask and faster. MY PROBLEM So now I have the really good selection I need to transfer that into my final image so I... Hit apply Now I have a selection of just the trees To test how good this is and recreate the result of using the black background in the Refine tool I convert the selection to a mask. In my mind this shoud duplicate the effect of the selection including transparency Then I load a pure black pixel layer beneath the masked layer The result is attached As you can see the selection as a mask appears quite a bit different from the refine preview window with lots of bleed coming through. Am I doing something wrong? Am I wrong to expect the mask to replicate the preview window in Refine? It seems if the preview can do it why can't I replicate in the final image? I really enjoyed selecting a tricky subject like this in Affinity and would really like to get this right. What am I doing wrong? or Is there a deficiency in Affinity? Many thanks Andrew Busst
  21. Hi everyone! I´m very new to Image editing, and I have been working with affinity photo for about 2 weeks, trying new things and tutorials around the web. Yesterday I decided to take a challenge, mask some girl´s hair, bute I can´t! Can someone help me do this? I don´t know what settings to use when refining edges around the hair and how to get some good selection. I put here the image to you so you can try it and if you are able to select and mask that hair pls let me know how you did it!! Thanks everybody!!!
  22. Hello, I've been using Affinity Photo for about 2-3 weeks now to work on a local client's comic book and I am extremely impressed with the efficiency with the program thus far! However I ran into a problem when attempting to remove the blue guide lines (margins used in comic book coloring). These lines are traditionally color coded blue, so that they're "easier" to erase while in a photo editing software and with Photoshop I had no problems erasing them. However I have tried multiple selection options with Affinity but all the magic wand does is either select everything else including the black or selects individual blue pixels and not the blue lines entirely. The blue itself is slightly transparent so that might be an issue? Here is what I did to get to this stage if it helps: Filters > Color > Erase white paper CTRL + J > CTRL+ E (to make the marker lines darker and then I just merged them together) Magic Wand tolerance set at 0%. - I mean I could always erase with a layer mask, but I would prefer a cleaner way to select and erase the blue in one go. Any thoughts?
