  1. When using the rectangular marquee tool, sometimes I know the exact pixel dimensions that I need to be selecting. I would like to have the ability to specify a selection box size and/or ratio, rather than simply dragging an area.
  2. Hi guys, Is there any way to automatically create a vector shape based on a selection I have made inside Affinity designer? Thanks, Mario
  3. Hi, On Windows, selection tools can certainly be improved. The selection brush tool is relatively useless without a tolerance factor. It does not well discriminate between very different pixels (hue, saturation, luminosity) ; I can achieve a kind of selection with the flood select tool but it needs many many many mouse/pen clicks, and with a tolerance value between 1 (!) and 14... otherwise, everything is selected. An editing photo app without effective selection tools is kind of a tree without branches. Selection is a quite basic process in (almost) any workflow. I do not know how the selection tools function in Mac but I have never succeeded to rapidly make an accurate selection. Would it not be possible to add a tolerance value for the selection brush tool? And make the Flood select tool more functional ? I also find that the refine “tool” is difficult to set and often my selection is worst after using it I simply would like to stress we need the best possible tools so we all can make effective complex selection(s). Cheers, P.
  4. Hey there, I've been having some issues with the "Refine Edges" tool when it comes to selections. After carefully selecting my subject in the picture, I intended to refine my selection when I noticed that as soon as I clicked on the "Refine..." button, the edges of my selection became fuzzy and inaccurate right away, making my overall selection much worse. This happened without even altering the settings or painting with the brush. After spending plenty of time trying to refine the selection with the help of the "foreground" and "background" brushes the result was not much improved, so I had to resort to Photoshop in order to get the job done. Here you can clearly see the what happens: Recording.mov Now I'm aware of the low contrast in some of the edges which make the task more complicated, something moderators keep mentioning in similar posts forgetting that's often the case in real-life scenarios. However when I managed to get a nearly perfect selection on Photoshop, I realised that was just an excuse (not to mention the improvement "Decontaminate colors" makes, a feature currently lacking in Affinity Photo). You can find the original image and my results in Photoshop as a comparison below, as well as the .afphoto file with the original selection saved as a Spare Channel, in case you want to give it a try. I've seen several posts regarding this issue, but since no actual solutions where provided and the topics were just forgotten (as you can see here, here and here), I decided to post about it myself before having to unfortunately switch back to Photoshop for good. picture.afphoto
  5. I recently upgraded to MacOS Catalina. My refine edges seemed to start actingwonky after that. When I choose to refine, the red mask shows up as expected. When I draw along the edges, all seems okay until the app finishes. At that point, the mask disappears and the marching and are completely gone. If I click Apply anyway (without seeing the results), the marching ants reappear and show where refinement took place, but I have to hit refine again, in order to do more work. Also, the previews only work while the mask is visible. Is anyone else experiencing this? I've been using AffinityPhotofor years and I can work around this glitch but it really slows me down. Any help would be much appreciated.
  6. Hi! I found that cutting backgrounds in product photos I've have to work on is somewhat tricky in Affinity Photo. I try to switch from PS to AP, but similar functions in both programs gives different effects. See attachments and you see squared edges in AP, and smooth (no feather etc.) edge in PS. Any suggestions?
  7. With CTRL+left click on a layer icon it is possible to create a selection from the contents of this layer. In PS (I know, AP is not PS...) you can use SHIFT or ALT as modifiers for adding to, subtracting from or intersecting with an existing selection. I would like to see this in AP, too. For adding two or more layers to a single selection there is at least a workaround: make a group from the layers you want the selection from and CTRL+left click the group layer icon to get a selection made of the "summed up" content of each of the grouped layers. However I haven't either figured out a way to realize the other operations or how to modify an existing selection with "selection from layer".

  9. Inside the "Refine selection" dialog when I select "Transparent" I get a preview that is slightly different from the result after applying the mask. I made some screenshots to demonstrate this behaviour: 1. Make a selection, then choose "Refine Selection": 2. Choose "Transparent" from "Preview", the legs of the subject show only a very small halo: 3. Choose output as mask and apply, now the halo has become much more visible, which is quite different from the preview: Why is there a difference between the preview and the final result? (The images were taken from "Compositing in Photoshop From Start to Finish" with Bret Malley on http://craftsy.com )
  10. Still not working in 1.7.3.481
  11. Hi guys. I am using affinity designer, I have a few objects grouped, three text objects and a background image, from top to bottom, in that order in the layers palette. I can select any object by clicking it individually, or by selecting it in the layers palette, however when I drag across multiple objects I keep selecting the background layer, either in conjunction with the desired elements or instead of them. Is there any way to stop either an individual layer from being selectable or perhaps prevent any locked layer from being selectable? I am aware that being able to select locked layers is by design but for me it seems to cause more issues than it fixes, is there a way to stop locked layers being selectable? At the moment the only solution is to turn that layer off visually but I still need to see what I am working with just don't want it to be selectable. Thanks, Aero
  12. Hello everyone, i have a question i didn't found the answer yet. After selecting and refining selection and then output it as a new layer with mask i got this. Why is my selection without mask pixelated and ruined and how can i avoid that? Thank you very much
  13. I have been looking at ways to effectively mask things like trees and then adjust the background so you can increase contrast, gamma etc in the sky without affecting the foreground. I have tried Remask from Topaz which is pretty good but thought I would try Affinity which is my core image editor. MY METHOD Using the selection brush I make a loose selection of the sky around the trees I then invert the selection I then hit Refine Using the Matt brushes and foreground and background modes I then tidy up the selection so only the tree is selected Using a black background in the Refine tool the trees look pretty good (see attached) In fact a better result than I can achieve using Topaz Remask and faster. MY PROBLEM So now I have the really good selection I need to transfer that into my final image so I... Hit apply Now I have a selection of just the trees To test how good this is and recreate the result of using the black background in the Refine tool I convert the selection to a mask. In my mind this shoud duplicate the effect of the selection including transparency Then I load a pure black pixel layer beneath the masked layer The result is attached As you can see the selection as a mask appears quite a bit different from the refine preview window with lots of bleed coming through. Am I doing something wrong? Am I wrong to expect the mask to replicate the preview window in Refine? It seems if the preview can do it why can't I replicate in the final image? I really enjoyed selecting a tricky subject like this in Affinity and would really like to get this right. What am I doing wrong? or Is there a deficiency in Affinity? Many thanks Andrew Busst
  14. Hi, ist there a similar tool in AP to select a color range like in PS. Currently im struggling to achieve similar good result like in PS. Thx.
  15. Hi everyone! I´m very new to Image editing, and I have been working with affinity photo for about 2 weeks, trying new things and tutorials around the web. Yesterday I decided to take a challenge, mask some girl´s hair, bute I can´t! Can someone help me do this? I don´t know what settings to use when refining edges around the hair and how to get some good selection. I put here the image to you so you can try it and if you are able to select and mask that hair pls let me know how you did it!! Thanks everybody!!!
  16. Hello, I've been using Affinity Photo for about 2-3 weeks now to work on a local client's comic book and I am extremely impressed with the efficiency with the program thus far! However I ran into a problem when attempting to remove the blue guide lines (margins used in comic book coloring). These lines are traditionally color coded blue, so that they're "easier" to erase while in a photo editing software and with Photoshop I had no problems erasing them. However I have tried multiple selection options with Affinity but all the magic wand does is either select everything else including the black or selects individual blue pixels and not the blue lines entirely. The blue itself is slightly transparent so that might be an issue? Here is what I did to get to this stage if it helps: Filters > Color > Erase white paper CTRL + J > CTRL+ E (to make the marker lines darker and then I just merged them together) Magic Wand tolerance set at 0%. - I mean I could always erase with a layer mask, but I would prefer a cleaner way to select and erase the blue in one go. Any thoughts?
  17. This is a simple feature that I thought was already in Photo by default. It's very important and it's missing. I would like to be able to drag a marquee selection from the centre (circular, rectangular...), not just the corner. A shortcut would be nice, like in Photoshop (ALT + DRAG, ALT + SHIFT + DRAG for constraining proportions and so forth). While we are here I would also suggest the option for moving the selection temporarily while creating it (again in Photoshop would be by holding the Space Bar, moving the selection and then releasing the spacebar and carry on the selection creation). Thank you!
  18. I see that Circle, Square, etc. Marquee Selection Tools have anti-alias in the menu, but when you use Flood selection and brush selection, they don't. Any reason why? Normally anti-alias is the preferred way to select, but there is no way to "enable" this for these two selection modes.
  19. if something is selected when export the document, Area option should be Selection with background/Selection without background. I prefer Selection without background.
  20. Hello! Apologies if this has been discussed before... When working with many overlapping objects, the current selection engine shows it's weaknesses, so: 1) For the Move and Node tool, there should be modifier keys to: always and reliably ADD to the selection, maybe SHIFT, always and reliably SUBTRACT from the selected obejcts or nodes, like CTRL, and one to INVERT what is selected, like CTRL-SHIFT. I just discovered that there is no way to SUBTRACT nodes from a selection of nodes. That's a no-go! Besides 2d vector programs I also work with numerous CAD and 3D programs also, and the aforementioned system has proven to be the cleares and most efficient. You might take my word for it. 2) For the Node tool, there should be a modifier key to select ALL nodes in the object, maybe by double-LMB-clicking on a node, and maybe the same modifier key to de-select all nodes of the object, without de-selecting everything else, too. It's very handy to be able to 'mix' a selection of single nodes and whole objects (by just selecting all their nodes)! 3) The option "Select object when intersects with selection marquee" works automatically when you LMB-drag over the object(s), and then additionally hold-release the RMB. This has been asked a year ago - can you please change this, so that no 2 mouse buttons need to be pressed at once? That's just not handy, especially if one works with a Wacom pen instead of a mouse. The ALT key could simply be used when drawing the marquee, or, like in other programs, the drawing direction of the marquee (from right to left or left to right) could make the difference. 4) Curve segments should be selectable! (a segment the part of a curve between two nodes) The simple version would be, if some modifier key is pressed (maybe ALT) and a segment is clicked, it's two neighbouring nodes are selected. If SHIFT and CTRL would work as selection-add or -subtract, more segments could be added to or subtracted from the node selection. The fancy verison would be that segments are actual, selectable, movable components of the object. 3ds Max for example has this concept implemented. I'd be fine with the node selection version, though. =) Please don't repeat the big mistake that Adobe Illustrator makes, having a crappy, awkward selection engine! Thanks!! Best regards Eugen
  21. A "Select Same" option (as in Adobe Illustrator) would be incredibly useful in Designer to select objects that share the same appearance. That way a user could select, say, all vector objects that have the same stroke weight, or colour fill, or colour stroke, etc. This would make editing and recolouring complex vector files a lot less taxing and time consuming, and a lot more streamlined.
  22. So I'm trying really hard to figure out Designer. I apologize for these nuub questions, but I'm just not finding answers in the forum, the help files nor the video tutorials. So I have the letter "A" that I've created curves for, and I want to delete the cross bar. Again, cannot figure out how I would select those two segments of the shape. I don't want to delete any nodes; I'd rather leave those and join them back together. How does one go about selecting (and in my case deleting) segments of a shape? I've tried selecting the shape with the node tool, and then dragging over the segments, but when I go to delete it the entire shape is deleted, not just the segments. If I click on the segments with the node tool, it appears to add nodes to the segment, not select the segments.
  23. Noob question: So I have a letter that I've converted to curves, and I want to tweak the letter form a bit. One thing I'd like to do is delete one of the serifs in the letter, and then lengthen the extender. For the life of me I cannot figure out how to select the nodes in the serif, other then shift clicking on every single node, which is would be very tedious because of all of the curves in the serif. I've tried using the node tool and clicking and dragging over the serif of the font, but nothing is selected. I've looked through the tutorials, but all I can find is how to select the entire object, or how to modify a single node. Any help with this would be appreciated.
  24. In Affinity Designer, is there a way to hide the blue outline surrounding the vectors on selected objects - similarly to how Adobe Illustrator hides the blue lines going forward by pressing "CTRL + H"? I often compare adjustments to a design by doing undos/redos and the blue vector outline changes what the design looks like. Thanks for any help!
