  1. Hi, As a long time Adobe Flash user, I'm used to make quick selections and modifications on vector shapes just by selecting a portion with the default cursor (see image). Also in Adobe Flash not every shape is automatically placed in its own seperate layer, instead shapes are automatically added to existing layer or shape. Vector shapes are rather added or withdrawn depending on their color, shapes of the same color are merged into one, while shapes of different colors are divided. I know this way of editing is not for everyone but I would very much like to have the option in Affinity Designer. regards, Ivo van de Grift Grootlicht Interactive Design
  2. After over two years of working with AP I am really finding ways round some of it’s quirks and limitations. But a couple of things still have me stumped. 1) It is easy to convert a path or shape to a selection. However has anyone found a way to convert a selection to a path? 2) One of things I really miss in AP is the ability to easily combine selections to produce ‘compound’ selections. The commonest is adding individual selections to get a single combined selection. In PS this is a breeze just Cmd click the mask or layer thumbnails one by one while holding the Shift key. (Other key combos will subtract and intersect as well). I use this in PS all the time. It’s incredibly quick and useful. Sadly this doesn’t work in AP as the Shift is otherwise assigned. The best work around I have found is to load the selection from each layer or mask and then save it as a spare channel one layer at a time. By right clicking on them in the Channels palette one can then combine them as wished and then delete the channels. To call this slow and convoluted qualifies as masterly understatement. So has anyone found a better way? I seem to remember, many moons ago, there were promises from the development team of introducing killer linking. Is this a figment of my imagination or is something on the drawing board? This app is so, so good. But it could still get to be something really amazing. Please keep up the great work!
  3. We have all had the problem of selecting a sky when most of the sky can be seen through gaps in the leaves and branches of a tree. It can take ages to accurately select every tiny gap to complete the selection of the sky. If we miss a few tiny gaps the result looks awful. Other programs, GIMP is an example, have selection tools which can select all areas of the sky, including those pesky gaps, with just one click. Of course it may be necessary to adjust the settings for that tool to capture clouds as well as the blue sky. If other programs can do it how about such a tool for Affinity Photo? (If you are not familiar with GIMP I'm talking about the 'Select by Color Tool'.)
  4. Hey guys, first post here. I’m having some major issues with the polygon marquee tool. When I try to make a selection for frequency separation, I use my Apple Pencil to draw out a selection, however it never actually makes the selection. Does anyone know a way around this? Also is it possible to delete and reinstall the application without losing all of my documents? I’ve included a video to show you all what’s going on. 24E04C4B-AF72-4EF0-AC61-9C002674C7DE.MP4
  5. When I use selection by quick mask + pain brush tool, then I turn off quick mask, I can't see selection edge (dot line) ps. OS - Windows 10 64 bit Affinity Photo version : 1.6.2.97
  6. In the image attached I would like to delete the two people on the left and then somehow copy the ones on the right and move them into a position slightly left of center. Can anyone advise me 'step by step' of how to go about this please as i'm sure once mastered, I'll be able to use it in other images too
  7. Can someone tell me how to do a good sky replacement of this photo? Included are the original and my failed attempt. As you can see there is a lot of purple in the leaves (upper left) in the original. I tried to defringe but that did not solve it. There must be some way to get rid of that purple, make the sky selection/replacement easier. Don't worry that they are not the same size, I am looking for good technique not an interesting photo. Thanks in advance. Orig.afphoto badReplace.afphoto
  8. Rotate Canvas really useful but, when Canvas rotated, Selection Outline (Marching Ants) is not visible. iPad Air 2; 2017 Pro 12.9 AP beta 1.6.7.68 iOS 11.1
  9. In photoshop you can make a new layer via copy. Make selection then hit CMD+J for make a new layer with selected content Is it possible to achieve the same using AD? btw, what do you think about to merge vector and pixel persona in to one? Shading is still more convenient using raster brushes. Thank you.
  11. I was wondering if it is possible to draw more than one path with the pen tool on a curves layer. for example if your producing cutouts and the object is not completely solid? When i close the path and then go in to draw a second path, this is then rendered on a separate Layer. So with a complicated object this will result in multiple layers. is there any way i can get them all on the same layer so when i make the path into a selection it makes life easier? is there keyboard shortcut I'm missing? Any help would be great...
  12. Hey, how can i get a selection from several layers in Affinity Photo for Ipad? I tried select non-transparent areas by selected more than one selected layer and a group. But both doesn't work. Sorry, my english is bad. Tanks in advance
  13. Is there any way to copy a portion of and image or a shape and paste and distort via the mesh? Whenever I try to do this by creating a selection with the Smart Selection Brush or the Poly Marquee Tool it will copy the ENTIRE LAYER. How can I avoid copying the entire layer when all I wish to copy is the specific selection?
  14. Hello I am a technical writer and 99 percent of my use of illustration software is the processing of drawings/views exported from CAD for the use in instruction manuals. The major tasks are therefore the cleaning up of imported files, resizing, cropping and finally adding items numbers and lines* from the item numbers to the parts. For the cleaning up Adobe Illustrator has a feature that comes in very handy: I select a line with a certain thickness, then go to the selection menu and click on "select all objects with the same stroke weight". I cannot find a similar feature in Affinity Designer. It is missing or only well hidden? If it's missing is it on the road map of future features? Best regards Rainer * Thank you so much for adding "Outline" to the "Effects" menu. Now I can place a wider white line behind the black line without the need to handle two separate objects. This is the key feature that made me buy a Designer license yesterday!
  15. I am very inexperienced in Affinity but used to know photoshop very well. I am trying to take a photo from Aperture (no problem there), Select a central(ish) part of the image - the part I want to keep, Feather the edge around the part that I want to keep, Delete the rest of the image/document (don't mind which) Convert the remaining feather-edged part of the image to greyscale (no problem there) I am; Selecting the central(ish) part of the image that I want to keep, Selecting "inverse pixel selection" - the marching ants look correct Selecting "cut" to remove the inverse selection The whole image is cut leaving a blank canvas. What is really annoying is that I have done this successful (albeit after several retrys) twice today and now I can't get it to work at all. I don't need a non-destructive method for this part and what I have done is what I would have done in Photoshop. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong (or right on some occasions)?
  16. I wasted a lot of time trying to understand why my refined cuts are partially transparent. I realized that this is because of "Matte edges" mark set by deafault in Refine window. I would say this mark set by deafault is pretty confusing, especially for newbies.
  17. I usually use magic wind to select but often I want to improve selection. Ordinary tools can't make smooth and precise edit so I would like to use pen. For example to add zone to existing selection. I know that I can convert pen curve to selection but new curve removes current selection.
  18. Hi folks, first excuse my poor english, greetings from germany ;-) The first thing I tried after installation was to make a selection and to edit it. I made a rectangle selection and tried to add another rectagle selection by select "Add" in the upper bar. But when I tried to add the second selection I moved the first instead. Second try was successfully, but why? After some try and error i realized, that adding (and subtracting) is only possible from outside the first selection. When trying to add (or subtract) from inside an selection you automatically move the first selection. Is this how it is meant to be? Greetings from Germany Jochen Kubik
  19. Hi Affinity. First of all, thank you for your excellent products, I've been waiting for something like this for a long time. I want to bring your attention to one problem that I haven't found mention on this forum and that is zooming with Ctrl + Space when you have Free hand selection tool activated. When I press Space the cursor changes to hand and the pan works, but when I also press Ctrl nothing happens. With every other tool it works as expected.
  20. I love Affinity Designer, please keep up the good work. It's coming along nicely, but I have run into some basic usability issues that significantly slow down my workflow. I think these would be useful for most users. Please add some form of vector trace - I am still keeping other vector apps for just this 1 feature. The Selection Marquee can’t select layers within groups - can this be added as an option or to the direct selection tool. With large documents, finding and selecting multiple layers really slows down the workflow. When ungrouping from a hidden group the layers don’t become hidden (which I would prefer) and I have to do that manually. Can they stay hidden by default unless I unhide the group and then ungroup, Can I change the highlight colour In Export tab When zoomed out with alot of slices. I can’t tell which slices I have chosen unless I have them all both selected and ticked. Please enable macros - this would be useful for many repetitive tasks making long shadows for example Again thanks for a great application. These are just suggestions (apart from number 1).
  21. Long time Photoshop user. One of the things I was able to do in Photoshop that I would like to know how to do, if possible, is use a layer mask to produce a selection. For example, if I have a layer with a mask of a person, like in the tutorial on selections and masks, is it possible to take the layer mask produced and turn it back into a selection? Thanks in advance for any help.
  22. I've got a few questions: 1. Is there a way to move the starting point of e.g. a marquee selection while still in the process of selecting? In Photoshop, this works by starting to drag, holding Space and continuing to drag. I use this all the time. (It works for the built-in OS X screenshot facility as well, btw.) 2. When the prefs window is the topmost one and I try to close it using Cmd+W, I always end up closing the document window behind it instead. Is there a reason for this awkward behaviour? 3. [ and ] don't change the brush size for me, although they're set as shortcuts in the prefs window. I assume this is a bug? (I am using a German keyboard, where square brackets are entered through Optn+5 and Optn+6.)
  23. Why is it not possible to make a selection using the marquee tool and copy and paste that area to a new pixel layer with alpha surround that new object? //EDIT: is it only possible on a pixel layer?
  24. I am not sure if this was wished befor, but my colleques asked for this when i gave them a lecture about affinity.. Well when selecting layers in the viewport, by pressing the alt key, and klicking , i can switch through several layer on top of each other... in Photoshop theres also the right click menue, to give you a list of layer, to select from, would this bei possible in the future too ? please.. thanks Tom
