  1. Hello everyone, i have a question i didn't found the answer yet. After selecting and refining selection and then output it as a new layer with mask i got this. Why is my selection without mask pixelated and ruined and how can i avoid that? Thank you very much
  2. Hi, ist there a similar tool in AP to select a color range like in PS. Currently im struggling to achieve similar good result like in PS. Thx.
  3. I have been looking at ways to effectively mask things like trees and then adjust the background so you can increase contrast, gamma etc in the sky without affecting the foreground. I have tried Remask from Topaz which is pretty good but thought I would try Affinity which is my core image editor. MY METHOD Using the selection brush I make a loose selection of the sky around the trees I then invert the selection I then hit Refine Using the Matt brushes and foreground and background modes I then tidy up the selection so only the tree is selected Using a black background in the Refine tool the trees look pretty good (see attached) In fact a better result than I can achieve using Topaz Remask and faster. MY PROBLEM So now I have the really good selection I need to transfer that into my final image so I... Hit apply Now I have a selection of just the trees To test how good this is and recreate the result of using the black background in the Refine tool I convert the selection to a mask. In my mind this shoud duplicate the effect of the selection including transparency Then I load a pure black pixel layer beneath the masked layer The result is attached As you can see the selection as a mask appears quite a bit different from the refine preview window with lots of bleed coming through. Am I doing something wrong? Am I wrong to expect the mask to replicate the preview window in Refine? It seems if the preview can do it why can't I replicate in the final image? I really enjoyed selecting a tricky subject like this in Affinity and would really like to get this right. What am I doing wrong? or Is there a deficiency in Affinity? Many thanks Andrew Busst
  4. Hi everyone! I´m very new to Image editing, and I have been working with affinity photo for about 2 weeks, trying new things and tutorials around the web. Yesterday I decided to take a challenge, mask some girl´s hair, bute I can´t! Can someone help me do this? I don´t know what settings to use when refining edges around the hair and how to get some good selection. I put here the image to you so you can try it and if you are able to select and mask that hair pls let me know how you did it!! Thanks everybody!!!
  5. Hello, I've been using Affinity Photo for about 2-3 weeks now to work on a local client's comic book and I am extremely impressed with the efficiency with the program thus far! However I ran into a problem when attempting to remove the blue guide lines (margins used in comic book coloring). These lines are traditionally color coded blue, so that they're "easier" to erase while in a photo editing software and with Photoshop I had no problems erasing them. However I have tried multiple selection options with Affinity but all the magic wand does is either select everything else including the black or selects individual blue pixels and not the blue lines entirely. The blue itself is slightly transparent so that might be an issue? Here is what I did to get to this stage if it helps: Filters > Color > Erase white paper CTRL + J > CTRL+ E (to make the marker lines darker and then I just merged them together) Magic Wand tolerance set at 0%. - I mean I could always erase with a layer mask, but I would prefer a cleaner way to select and erase the blue in one go. Any thoughts?
  6. This is a simple feature that I thought was already in Photo by default. It's very important and it's missing. I would like to be able to drag a marquee selection from the centre (circular, rectangular...), not just the corner. A shortcut would be nice, like in Photoshop (ALT + DRAG, ALT + SHIFT + DRAG for constraining proportions and so forth). While we are here I would also suggest the option for moving the selection temporarily while creating it (again in Photoshop would be by holding the Space Bar, moving the selection and then releasing the spacebar and carry on the selection creation). Thank you!
  7. I see that Circle, Square, etc. Marquee Selection Tools have anti-alias in the menu, but when you use Flood selection and brush selection, they don't. Any reason why? Normally anti-alias is the preferred way to select, but there is no way to "enable" this for these two selection modes.
  8. if something is selected when export the document, Area option should be Selection with background/Selection without background. I prefer Selection without background.
  9. Hello! Apologies if this has been discussed before... When working with many overlapping objects, the current selection engine shows it's weaknesses, so: 1) For the Move and Node tool, there should be modifier keys to: always and reliably ADD to the selection, maybe SHIFT, always and reliably SUBTRACT from the selected obejcts or nodes, like CTRL, and one to INVERT what is selected, like CTRL-SHIFT. I just discovered that there is no way to SUBTRACT nodes from a selection of nodes. That's a no-go! Besides 2d vector programs I also work with numerous CAD and 3D programs also, and the aforementioned system has proven to be the cleares and most efficient. You might take my word for it. 2) For the Node tool, there should be a modifier key to select ALL nodes in the object, maybe by double-LMB-clicking on a node, and maybe the same modifier key to de-select all nodes of the object, without de-selecting everything else, too. It's very handy to be able to 'mix' a selection of single nodes and whole objects (by just selecting all their nodes)! 3) The option "Select object when intersects with selection marquee" works automatically when you LMB-drag over the object(s), and then additionally hold-release the RMB. This has been asked a year ago - can you please change this, so that no 2 mouse buttons need to be pressed at once? That's just not handy, especially if one works with a Wacom pen instead of a mouse. The ALT key could simply be used when drawing the marquee, or, like in other programs, the drawing direction of the marquee (from right to left or left to right) could make the difference. 4) Curve segments should be selectable! (a segment the part of a curve between two nodes) The simple version would be, if some modifier key is pressed (maybe ALT) and a segment is clicked, it's two neighbouring nodes are selected. If SHIFT and CTRL would work as selection-add or -subtract, more segments could be added to or subtracted from the node selection. The fancy verison would be that segments are actual, selectable, movable components of the object. 3ds Max for example has this concept implemented. I'd be fine with the node selection version, though. =) Please don't repeat the big mistake that Adobe Illustrator makes, having a crappy, awkward selection engine! Thanks!! Best regards Eugen
  10. A "Select Same" option (as in Adobe Illustrator) would be incredibly useful in Designer to select objects that share the same appearance. That way a user could select, say, all vector objects that have the same stroke weight, or colour fill, or colour stroke, etc. This would make editing and recolouring complex vector files a lot less taxing and time consuming, and a lot more streamlined.
  11. After make a selection and inversed this and try to copy it the whole system freezed. I used a wacom intuos 4 driver with this, i had to use the mouse to get to unlock the system again. Don't know if this is a bug. There was no expended GPU or memory at the moment. Windows 10 home 28 gb ram i5 gpu an nvidia 1050ti
  12. So I'm trying really hard to figure out Designer. I apologize for these nuub questions, but I'm just not finding answers in the forum, the help files nor the video tutorials. So I have the letter "A" that I've created curves for, and I want to delete the cross bar. Again, cannot figure out how I would select those two segments of the shape. I don't want to delete any nodes; I'd rather leave those and join them back together. How does one go about selecting (and in my case deleting) segments of a shape? I've tried selecting the shape with the node tool, and then dragging over the segments, but when I go to delete it the entire shape is deleted, not just the segments. If I click on the segments with the node tool, it appears to add nodes to the segment, not select the segments.
  13. Noob question: So I have a letter that I've converted to curves, and I want to tweak the letter form a bit. One thing I'd like to do is delete one of the serifs in the letter, and then lengthen the extender. For the life of me I cannot figure out how to select the nodes in the serif, other then shift clicking on every single node, which is would be very tedious because of all of the curves in the serif. I've tried using the node tool and clicking and dragging over the serif of the font, but nothing is selected. I've looked through the tutorials, but all I can find is how to select the entire object, or how to modify a single node. Any help with this would be appreciated.
  14. In Affinity Designer, is there a way to hide the blue outline surrounding the vectors on selected objects - similarly to how Adobe Illustrator hides the blue lines going forward by pressing "CTRL + H"? I often compare adjustments to a design by doing undos/redos and the blue vector outline changes what the design looks like. Thanks for any help!
  15. Hello, Maybe there’s other ways to do this but i would like to request for the rotate slider to work with selected vectors. I can rotate selected vectors via the rotate button but not the rotate slider which i thought makes sense. See my point via video attached. 4B4B10D9-19F3-432F-B27B-40D3150B2C51.mov
  16. I am trying to find a way to outline or stroke a selection but not having much luck. What I want to do is to make a selection from a raster image, then outline that selection into a vector and discard the raster image. I only need the outline. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Bob
  17. What title says. Steps to reproduce: place picture stretch it to cover bleeds, switch to Photo, marque selection can't be drawn on bleed. However when moving existing marque it can overlap bleed with no problem.
  18. Hello, and sorry if the question have been asked before, but I would like to know if there is a function that would select automatically the "similar objects" according to stroke colour, fill colour, and other parameters. I used this function before in illustrator (Unfortunately, I no longer have it to check) and it was very useful, particularly when you have tones of layers. One of the top reason I may use it is when I am trying to select die-cuts marks on small objects (think small stickers scattered on a big sheet of paper and needed to be cut with let's a say a plotter) We use the same artwork to print the packaging and in that case, I need to get rid of the die-cut marks (they are all with the same stroke colour). The way I was doing in Illustrator was to select one die cut and "auto-select" all the others based on the reference selected stroke colour. If it doesn't exist yet, I'd raise my voice for a feature request Thanks!
  19. Affinity Photo for Desktop feature request: 1. Add a selection wand to select areas of related color when creating a mask, with +/- and antialias options. I use Corel Draw's "magic wand" to do this. I'd love to have this feature in APhoto.
  20. When I zoom in a current selection often wanders out of sight, beyond the window’s edges. Wish: selection’s center is centred in the window as soon as it’s falls over the window’s edge.
  21. Is there a way to convert a Pen Tool path you make into a selection. There is a selection from layer I can do, but I would like to just convert the path into a selection, without having to create extra layers.
  22. I am becoming familiar with Tonal Range Selections, and comparing those with manually established blending ranges, using a grey scale gradient for testing. The three Tonal Range options, Shadows-Highlights-Midtones, while quick, do not seem to allow selection of the entire tonal range of the image. The three selections each have feathering at one or more edges, the leave part of the image left out of the selection. I tried using the Refine Edge options, which reduce, but do not eliminate the issue. Thus, I proceeded to develop a similar technique, using Blend Ranges (with a total of 10, of 10% each, for a combined possible selection of 100%). For example, here's the first 10% range, with a green fill layer underneath. I appreciate the 'smooth transition' that might have been intended by the feathered Tonal Range Selections, but find the lack of a complete selection using the provided method problematic. Since the Macro functionality of AP is limited, but at least does allow recording Blend Ranges with the recent update (!) as part of a Macro, that's the tack taken. Ultimately, as macros do not allow renaming a "Spare Channel" (nor does the focus of the name field shift, when using the right-click 'rename' option), I hope that some of these concerns might be addressed. I tried adding a Keyboard shortcut for the Spare Channel without success. Being able to edit Macros in an offline editor would be great. But, even the copy-paste-delete methods available in the likes of PS would be quite helpful. If indeed there is not an adjustment to overcome the banding I demonstrate, I am not sure if AP users are aware of this Tonal Range Selection being incomplete. My searches on this Forum did not find such a topic. I own many photo editing programs, and RAW converters, and am enjoying exploring Affinity Photo, the stacking and panorama features in particular. The many video tutorials are most appreciated as well! 8x10-gradient-no-selections.afphoto
  23. Hi, On Windows, selection tools can certainly be improved. The selection brush tool is relatively useless without a tolerance factor. It does not discriminate between very different pixels (hue, saturation, luminosity) ; I can achieve a kind of selection with the flood select tool but it needs many many many mouse/pen clicks, and with a tolerance value between 1 (!) and 14... otherwise, everything is selected. An editing photo app without effective selection tools is kind of a tree without branches. Selection is a quite basic process in (almost) any workflow. I do not know how the selection tools function in Mac but I have never succeeded to rapidly make an accurate selection. Would it not be possible to add a tolerance value for the selection brush tool? And make the Flood select tool more functional ? I also find that the refine “tool” is difficult to set and often my selection is worst after using it I simply would like to stress we need the best possible tools so we all can make effective complex selection(s). Cheers, P.
  24. AP I'm having a very hard time disabling the pink boundary lines around the layers (even the ones that are not selected). It has made it impossible for me to work. I never saw them before, can someone help getting rid of them? Please check attachment for screenshot.
  25. An image is worth 1000 words, the first image is the cut out I made and second image is the cut out placed in another image... but with a border I do not want. If any more context is needed, please let me know! Any help? Thanks catonjam.afphoto
