  1. Hi all! I’m trying to check if there is a way to get rulers or guides turned on when doing work within designer? many thanks!
  2. I know this was missing in V.1, but was hoping that page rulers would be added to V.2 apps. The desktop version has page rulers (View > Show rulers), but not sure why the iOS version does not. If I am missing something, please let me know. If not, please add page rulers like the desktop version has.. Thanks!
  3. Publisher still doesn't want us to change the ruler's zero mark on two facing pages. If you change the ruler origin on the X axis of a master page of two facing pages, you cannot duplicate that ruler origin change by applying that master to facing pages in the publication. The contents of the master page will apply, but NOT the ruler X origin change. If you want the X origin of the ruler, i.e. the zero mark, to be re-centred in between each two facing pages you must change the X origin for each and every pair of facing pages in the publication manually by going to View > Guides Manager > Spread Origin. This should have been fixed long ago. X or Y spread origins could be specified when one is creating a new publication, then it would apply to all pages. At the very least they should be retained in Master pages. That should be easy to code.
  4. Hello. I've placed the zero point of the rulers at the corner of a group in hopes of recording offsets from that zero point to objects within the group. placing a new object at the 100,100 point shows it's position as 285,59, which is the left edge of the document. I need to measure FROM the ruler zero point, which is how it should work. Is there a setting I'm missing?
  5. Several times I've tried to set the ruler's "zero" position (spread origin) away from the default location and have the change apply to the entire publication. But the change seems to apply only to the page where it was made. I tried it on a master page, thinking the change might be "inherited" by all document pages based on the particular master page. That didn't work. Is there a way to set the spread origin position globally so that the "zero" position is set for all pages or spreads—until you reset it manually?
  6. Hi, I'd like to only use the real metric units, everywhere. Subdivided by 10ths — see upper edge of wooden ruler. Publisher subdivides metric rulers by halves like you would do in your medieval unit of measurement — on the wooden ruler's lower edge. Switching from mm to cm to m or zooming in shows the madness. A proper design application's ruler would go 0 - 1 - 2 0 - 0.1 - 0.2 0 - 0.01 - 0.02 When I say everywhere, I also mean font sizes. In the age of sharp printers and screens, I really don't care about standard lead letter sizes. Call me a peasant if you like.
  7. Rulers seem to be off considerably, especially mm scale.
  8. Let's go back to school, with some of those common and well known plastic/wood/metal like school rulers. The ruler assets shared here ... ... are all vector based and do have a printed on centimeters or inch scale (some also do contain both cm + inch scales together printed on). The default ruler sizes and thus their shown scales, should nearly match the Affinity ruler measurements, which means they could be used to measure when placed into Affinity docs, as far as their default size is kept and they are not resized from their initial size. Note that all rulers are just a bunch of grouped together vector parts (curves and text) ... ... thus they can be modified in colorings and the like. The set of rulers contains some straight rulers ... ... a few triangles smaller and bigger sized ... .. and some simple protractors. Here is the associated assets file: school-rulers.afassets Have a nice school day!
  9. After endlessly playing around with units and scales, my set of customizable rulers slowly takes shape. The drawed scale measurings (cm/inches/degrees...) have been verified against Affinity Designers build in rulers and seem to fit well together. Not sure yet, but maybe these will be part of some reusable assets then.
  10. I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to reset the origin (0,0) of the rulers. I'd like to reset the zero point to where 2 guides intersect. In other graphics programs I can usually grab the upper left corner of the rulers and drag to a point to rest that point to zero. Can't figure it out in Designer though. Is this even possible?
  11. When I try to use a guide it shows red and dotted but when I put the pencil on it to move it, the guide turns blue and will not move. Initially I could use horizontal but not vertical guides but now it's happening with the horizontal one too. Any ideas how to fix this? I saw and older thread which suggested this was a known bug and was being fixed as a matter of urgency. TIA
  12. Hi there, For my work I want to make patterns with affinity designer. I studied it for a bit and run into this problem. We use A3 sheets of pattern, the patterns are in real size. When printing we are always 1 cm to big to short. I am looking now to measure the lines but cannot find any option for this. Is there a way to do this? To get the exact measurement that I want. Rgds. Henk Brouwer
  13. When I open an image in Photo, the rulers display in pixels. How do I change that to inches?
  14. Sorry if this has been raised before. The default setting for ruler measurements in both Photo and Designer is pixels, presumably because the majority use that. However I mainly work in cms and it drives me round the bend have to change the setting each time I open a file. Please could a future update include the ability to set your own default measurement unit in Preferences?
  15. I'm having some trouble and am a little confused due to how rulers and grids work. It seems the background grid and some rulers only appear when i select the artboard itself... I'd like to also have the grid and rulers visible when I select an object within this artboard. I've heard of the fact there are some guide managers which can be applied to the artboard or the document itself, but I'm not sure if this is what will solve my problem. My problem may have been occurred after duplicating an artboard. Any help would be appreciated.
  16. When I see rulers, it looks strange for my continental eye. Divisions are unusual. By example I can see 20 mm divided by 5, giving 4 mm steps. Normally we would have 10 mm divided by 2 (5 mm step), or by 5 (2mm step) or by 10 (1 mm step). Can you change this ?
  17. I do love Designer and Photo and I am now looking for more precision so with that in mind please look at the accuracy of your program - with regards to the following: 1) When using the pen tool and snapping to a curve, if I zoom in using the super zooming ability of Designer, at a high enough zoom level the snapped node is actually not touching the curve at all. 2) Please allow me to specify more than 1 decimal place on all text and paragraphs properties I.e. leaning, font size, kerning, character spacing... when designing text to fit an exact area, it is very useful to bring back a single word orphan/widow by adjusting by 0.000001 without having to stretch the text box and distort the text. It may sound extreme but this kind of accuracy can be useful. You should definitely consider this on your up coming Publisher / InDesign alternative. 3) Allow us to snap to the ‘notches’ on the rulers like in Photoshop when you hold shift 4) Allow us to choose which rotation angles to snap to when using the rotation tools. An option in the preferences window to manage it would be great :-)
  18. I am not sure if this is the right place for my post. I started doing design work with Photoshop and Freehand and later, when Adobe first bought and subsequently killed Freehand, with Illustrator. A few months ago I played around with Designer and Photo on both, an iMac and an iPad, and liked the experience. Most of all I liked that finally someone tried to come up with an alternative to Adobe. Sadly, since I decided to try and do a real paying design job on an iPad Pro using Designer and Photo my experience has been quite frustrating. Rather than doing actual design I had to search forums for the most basic (in my opion) features. Changing units from pt to mm? “Resize” in my opinion is a quite unlikely spot. Want pagerulers? No, this feature hasn’t made its way to the iPad yet. I am aware that I am surely stuck in the Adobe logic of where I expect to find certain functions and tools and how I expect them to operate but I am most certainly not the only one. As things stand right now with every step I want to make design wise I have to expect it to either not work or only after a considerable amount of time in the forums, this, simply, isn’t an option and step by step it takes me closer to goodbye Affinity and a sad hello Illustrator. In terms of actually asking something: - Rulers: really (really?) still not implemented in both iPad apps? - Guides: is there way to add guides to a specific artboard at a desired position without mathematical shenanigans? How can I edit and remove specific guides?
  19. Currently (as of Novembre 2018), the 'Affinities' display nice-looking and readable rulers (fine). Unfortunately, the subdivisions of these rulers are often a bit odd, so that seemingly obvious and important numbers are not shown (it's better than with some programs, but worse than with others). Let's take the millimetre rulers as an example: Here, the 4 subdivision ticks appear at the values 44, 48, 52 and 56, which is not so nice. It would be nicer if there were only three ticks, at 45, 50 and 55. Similar problem here: The large ticks appear as above, so that the number 50, which I myself would expect to be more important than 52, gets a short tick instead of a large one. In order not to get too many ticks, I would suggest a large tick at 50, and small ticks with a distance of 2. Similar problem here: The large ticks show up as above, being 8 times the distance of the small ones. Powers of 2 work quite well with people who are used to work with inches, but all units that usually use powers of 10 yield strange results with halfening as shown. In this case, I recommend an additional number at 50 (there's lots of space for it), large ticks at 45 and 55 and small ticks with a distance of 1. Overall, more than 4 small ticks in a row more or less make my eyes glaze over in confusion... Unfortunately, the algorithm for really nice ruler divisions is rather complicated and sometimes even depends on the preferences of the user. An old vector illustration program I know (Professional Draw from 1992) therefore even offered two subdivision styles for inches: Inches (with continuous halfening) and decimal inches... 20. Thanks for letting users get a first impression of Affinity Publisher at this early stage (1.7.0.58 on Windows 7, 64 bit, German). And since this a bug forum, I just report basic bugs or strange behaviour, but not the good stuff: Page Up + Page Down keys don't work: Independent of the number of pages, the magnification, or whether or not an object or some text is selected, the PgUp/PgDn keys don't do anything. It would be nice to have them work properly, e.g., as in PagePlus... Unintuitive ruler subdivisions: This is valid for all Affinity programs, but I didn't bother to mention this until now: The ruler subdivisions are sometimes unintuitive and difficult to interpret. In the attached screenshot 'rulers.png' with mm rulers, there are 20 subdivisions from 40 to 60, which is wonderful. Unfortunately, every fourth tick is longer than the others, letting you easily see the not-so-often wanted and rather unimportant numbers 44, 48, 52 and 56. It would be much nicer if the longer ticks were also distributed in 1-2-5 distances, in this case 20 subdivisions as before, but every fifth tick longer, to show the much more important numbers 45, 50 and 55. Missing 'Actual size' zoom: The help pages claim that some 'Actual size zoom' popup would be available in the document setup for pixel and point document units, but I could never see anything like that. Optical alignment edit fields buggy: In the 'Edit text style' dialog, the optical alignment can be defined in a style similar to PagePlus (fine). Unfortunately, all the 'Right' edit fields don't work properly: The percentage one enters there is properly used for the text style (fine), but, after pressing Enter or focusing a different edit field, the entered percentage is divided by 100, rounded and then displayed. This then shows only one of the two choices '0%' or '1%' (numbers up to 49 are rounded to 0, numbers from 50 onwards are rounded to 1). The previously entered value is still properly used for the text style, but the user cannot see that in the edit field any more. 'Ignore space for same styles' not fully memorised: In the 'Edit text style' dialog, the spacing setting 'Ignore space for same styles' is not correctly memorised. After closing the dialog and opening it again, it always shows up 'greyed', independent of the selected state when closing the dialog with OK. Decoration buttons undecipherable: In the 'Edit text style' dialog, all the 'decoration' buttons show an image that is either misleading or unintelligible: The first four show a grey fill (but are not used for the fill) and the position of the lines is more or less invisible (at least for me), and the fifth shows a border, but no fill (this is used for the fill, but not the borders). Very confusing. The images should better be self-explanatory, as in the attached picture 'decorations.png'. With best regards, Andreas Weidner
  21. Hi. I do graphic design and decided to give Affinity a chance as Illustrator is FULL of bugs with every "update". I need to make a very accurate grid and for that, I need the zero point for the ruler to move to the point I need it. Is there something I missed? Can anyone tell me where I can find this function?
  22. Love the beta of Publisher. Only thing I still am a bit annoyed with is setting guides, because they have to be set manually by distance (percentage or millimeter) rather than to add on X number of guides and have them evenly spaced from either margins or the page. May I suggest a checkbox in the Guides manager? [x] Space guides evenly And radio button for Align guides to (x)Margin ( )Page It would make it a breeze without having to do math.
  23. I have previously requested this for Designer and Photo, but accepted that pixels/points was possibly adequate for most folks' needs. But I'm aghast that Publisher does not support Pica & Points as a measurement standard. Please implement this in your measurement engine! I understand that picas may not be used in Europe, but in North America it's a very useful standard. Points alone is not enough. And, thanks for the public beta release!
