  1. Hey all, The Photo for Windows beta has proven incredibly popular, and I appreciate that, like with any software, there's a learning curve and the requirement to invest time in understanding the software's functionality and idiosyncrasies. With no firm commitment to delivering them consistently (that bit is important to note ;) ) I'd like to share some example editing/workflow videos. My aim is to demonstrate Photo's feature set and, hopefully, help viewers understand how the tools and features they're accustomed to using in other software can translate to Photo's implementations. If you haven't caught them already, it's also worth noting that there's a huge set of video tutorials for Photo available at http://affin.co/PhotoTuts - around 165 at last count. Here they are: Hadrian's Wall Link: https://vimeo.com/191642138 This video focuses on: Raw noise reduction and dithering Marquee selections from tonal ranges Layer masking Blend modes Blend ranges Channel duplication/loading to alpha mask Live filter layers Configurable layer behaviour Tiled Building Link: https://vimeo.com/191981432 This video focuses on: Accurate selections using selection brush tool Saving selections to spare channels Loading channel information into a layer's alpha mask Live brush previews Creative painting with blend modes Dynamic brush resizing on the fly Live Lighting filter Live filter layer mask painting Fast history scrubbing Portrait Retouching Link: https://vimeo.com/194985128 This video focuses on: Automated Frequency Separation Healing Brush and Clone Brush Merging visible layers Live filter layers Live brush previews and blend modes Changing/adding colour tones Changeable workflow behaviours via Assistant dialog Live scrubbing History panel Monochromatic Architecture Link: https://vimeo.com/194986066 This video focuses on: Adjustment Layers Live brush work with live previews Painting & Erasing Live filter layers Non-destructive noise/grain addition Canary Wharf Link: https://vimeo.com/203283705 This video focuses on: RAW development Tone Curve option Apply Image with channel equations Black & White adjustment with Multiply blend mode to knock out sky colour Pixel painting to enhance colours Curves tonal adjustment Live Unsharp Mask filter for final sharpening Banded Demoiselle Link: https://vimeo.com/203294769 This video focuses on: Creating selections with the Selection Brush Inverting a selection Masking an adjustment using a selection Tweaking layer opacity Live Lighting filter with blend mode Live High Pass filter with masking White Balance for tinting I'll keep you posted as further videos appear. Hope they prove helpful to you!
  2. Hi, The PDF import is great, except I often get PDFs without their respective fonts, and rather than have to pass them back and ask, or get them outlined, it'd be nice if we had the option to just import the flattened pages, like Photoshop can. This is something I don't see in a lot of packages, and it would be a really useful feature for me. Thanks, Mike
  3. I'm looking for a tutorial that shows me about creating (not editing) a 360° panorama. Does anyone know one? Thanks Erwe
  4. //EDIT: formerly known as 'the big disappointment'// -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- dont know if i am in the right place for my complaints, admins just might feel free to change the category. ust tried the designer/photo-combo. although theres actually no trial available, the current offer made me weak. so bought both and the book, installed and ... just got quite disappointed! having a approved win7pro 64bit-system with two calibrated nec spectraview reference monitors, calibrated epson 3880 printer and soft-rip for cmyk proofing. this setup is reliable, well maintained and flawlessly working with adobe illustrator, photoshop, indesign and lightroom as well as corel draw for dtp and photo editing same as web development. every application is giving consistent results under the given color management enviroment. thus said before describing the affinity-experiences to indicate this might be not a newbies issue ... so to af designer and photo: first serious issue i am encountering is a quite incorrect color presentation when using cymk-incorpotated files. colors here are far to vibrant and quite "over the top". looks like viewing a rgb-pic under wrong conditions as wide-gammut with no correction. profiles set throughout all applications are eciRGB or srgb/adobe rgb respective iso coated/uncoated v2. as long as in rgb, affinity follows the other applications - completely going nuts in cymk. every application does this great too, exept for the affinitys. theres 'flashing' colors that neighter represent the correct appearance nor theire useable in any way. as the color management setup showed absolutely no problems so far, i assume the problem is up to affinity. having hardware calibrated monitors with 16bit lut, and experiencing affinity isnt able to handle existing 16bit cymk tifs too, there might be something that affinity cant handle regarding the monitor-assigned profiles? btw: when i am applying a srgb-emulation to one of the monitors (as i am doing when developing for web) the colors in affinity are getting better for cymk... but that cant be the solution, as this is not useable for all other applications which can handle the monitor profiles the right way. switching my monitor profiles to native srgb as suggested in some other threads, changes nothing at all. apart from that it cant be managed that way through windows due to hardware-calibration. so what does affinity wrong? affinity is praysed for being used by professionals, but how would they, experiencing such issues?? maybe its me whos doing something wrong with affinity, but why does it work well with all other programs??? any hint for maybe overlooked things highly appreciated. theres some other things too, i've experienced already within the first few hours: - no support for 16bit cymk tif-files (big downpoint, as there are many) - no color control/preview when exporting bitmaps /.png/.jpg (which is quite sad too when theres no consistent color-conversion as it seems) - no recognition of postscript-printer (soft-rip) and available deactivation of printer profile (because colors are handled by rip - adobe does this as well as corel...) - no option for printing without profile overall - quite important for printing calibration targets for profiling (as well as targeting the rip) ... - no color inspection tool without clicking (like info-panel in adobe, or maybe havent just found yet) - using exported corel-files as .ai does not work in affinity, have to save them in ai again. great clincher as well. - the dark ui has far to harsh contrasts, especially within menus - startup-time is worse 30-40 sec plus on a real fast engine (plenty of ram plus ssd - adobe and corel only takes a fraction of it) - ...? having just made simple setup and some research, maybe ill find other issues, maybe experiencing some change to the better, but so far there isnt much hope i am able to replace my print workflow with affinity at all. if this problems (at least the color-thing) wont be solved soon, theres no way using affinity for (my) cymk-workflow. and if this persists until the upcoming publisher is revealed, it will be unuseable for this too! really would be glad being able to dismiss adobe and corel (the sooner the better), but obviously theres completely no way for that up till now ... so at the moment regarding the buy as kind of support for affinity and ongoing development to the better... and: hoping for production-useable versions within version 1. sad. and just as a remark: its quite a pity one cant order designer, photo and book within one single subscription - maybe i am too dumb for, but it required three individual oders to get all of them... and - it may be some good idea for the future to offer bundles (once they work correctly of course!).
  5. Hello everybody. To get started please excuse my basic English (thanks to the automatic translator) This is my first post here and I have a request after a small disappointment in my first test of Affinity Photo. I'm an hobbyist illustrator and I also done animations on another program called Moho. In Moho there is the possibility of spherical panoramas used as décorations, and from there came to me the idea of drawing my own panoramic scenery. But I have never found of drawing programs that would give me that ability. I was very excited about seeing that AF gave the possibility to draw directly in an environment of spherical panorama. but the problem is that this is only possible on a single layer, and I need to use that picture guide on top which I could draw my decorations. Why not let the possibility of putting the live projection on a folder containing several layers? Some examples of what I'd like to be able to do under Affinity Photo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YqUQiPvRMM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCGFMNhFMe4
  6. Hi Guys, It might be me but I can't figure out how to use masking effectively. Here is a picture to illustrate my problem with it: As you can see the masking is applied but instead of taking out the window it takes out the whole building. How can I invert this? I have searched the forum and the vimeo tutorials but can't seem to find it. Thanks for the help, regards
  7. It would be very useful to be able to right-click on the fx in the layer and a drop-down list appear offering the ability to copy and paste just the layer fx. Then to be able to select another layer and right-click on the fx and select paste to apply. This is extremely useful to apply all the text fx on artistic text to another text layer to maintain design efficiency. This is available in PhotoShop through "layer styles" and is something I use all the time. Thank you. I have bought both Photo and Designer and I am very pleased with Photo. I have been looking/waiting for a Photoshop replacement I can use for years. Well done Serif! PS: Someone also mentioned the option to remove fx too which is an excellent idea and could be part of the above options?
  8. Is there a "Mixer Brush" equivalent in Affinity Photo? I how discovered that this Photoshop tool, the Mixer Brush, was very useful in digital painting. Is there a similar one in Affinity Photo...if not, do they plan to add something like it?
  9. What is the easiest way to do this? I have tried grabbing png files, but I don't know how to separate the black arrow image from the white background. Any tips?
  10. Hi, I am using affinity photo on windows and occasionally use pen input. I would appreciate the option to only draw with the pen, not by accidentally touching the screen with a single finger (or by palm rejection not working at that particular moment, or by simply forgetting what happens when you use a finger while drawing with a pen). If that option is enabled (maybe only when a brush is actually the current tool), a little button next to the pressure sensitivity button could enable/disable that behavior. And then, maybe finger input could automatically be something else, like moving and selecting objects. Best
  11. I like the way guys from FixThePhoto created a magnifying glass ( like this http://fixthephoto.com/examples/high-end ) in their gallery for the best view of before and after retouching samples. Can somebody help me to make this function on my website which is connected with my own photomanipulations? I will be very grateful!
  12. Hi, i think there is a issue with LUTS used in Color FInale for FCPX. While it works properly in DaVinci it seems to not work in FCPX. Here are my screenshots. Please help, it would be awesome to use selfmade LUTS in FCPX: Thank you Dennis
  13. One user of Fujifilm's Facebook group for the upcoming medium format Fujifilm GFX 50s posted that with Affinity Photo you can develop the RAW files for this camera. I have tried this and it really works. Great!
  14. Hi, juste as the title says, I wanted to know if i can find photo filters (or export some from photoshop) and if so where can i find them ?
  15. Just wanted to know if there is any news or rough ETA for Affinity Photo on iPad. It's been announced as "on the way" for a while now. Anybody have an idea when/if a beta version will be released? Thanks
  16. I prefer to output viewable jpg's at 100% but each time it defaults to 85% (why is this?). Is there an simple option to change the output parameters to default to 100%?Changing to 'best quality does not do this.
  17. Hi, I am another user interested in Affinity Photo as an alternative to Photoshop. I have been familiarizing and playing with it after installing the beta version for Windows on my computer. Overall it is OK. It is somewhat different from Photoshop and this will require me to go through some learning, all of which is fair and expected. A part from bugs that need fixing, I think there is space for better implementation of some functions some of which are being reported in this forum. I am adding one myself for the Curves function (under Tones in the Develop Persona). Unless I am missing something, in its current implementation the curves function of Affinity allows to place and move points in the curve but does not show the values of the input and output coordinates of the points. This makes very difficult (in fact, almost impossible) to exactly reproduce a similar curve profile on different photos. Photoshop not only shows the input and output values of each selected point of a curve, but also allows to directly enter such values in the corresponding fields without having to drag each point. Also, similar to Photoshop, I think that showing a curve and its corresponding hystogram overlapped in the same graph helps to much better evaluate the effect of modifying a curve. I hope this and other practical improvements will be implemented in Affinity to make its current and already quite impressive set of features even stronger. Regards, Marco Debiasi
  18. when I click on an adjustment layer there is no red confirmation button in the top LH corner, so not allowing any changes
  19. I've read that AP's raw converter supports reading from some uncompressed DNG files produced by some Leica cameras. But does it support Adobe's DNG beyond that subset? Or are there unimplemented features?
  20. Hi, I've been searching around but I can't seem to find a solution: I have a a simple jpeg file with black text on white background. I want to marquee the text so that I could create a shape/s out of the text. In PS, i would simply magic wand the text, when the marquee comes out, I create paths from selection. I have looked around and I read somewhere that after selection, I can go to Selection>Outline. I can't seem to find that command in my version. I;m using ver 1.5.1.43. Is there any other workaround for this? I know different software need different approach, so I guess I need time to wrap my head around this. Also, I have tried to export the paths from PS but when I open in designer there are no paths! Thanks.
  21. I have just installed Affinity Photo 1.5.0 on my Mac with OS X 10.12.1 (Sierra). I use an Epson printer. I am entirely new to Affinity Photo, so please forgive me if the answer to this is obvious. In Photoshop there is the option to let the printer's own colour controls manage the printed colours or to disable these and let PS manage the colours; I usually opt for the latter. I could not find an equivalent place in AP where I could make this choice, and when I printed a photo the print that resulted was grotesquely too dark and with bad colour balance. I should be very grateful for information about this. I am aware that back in 2015 there was much discussion about the limited nature of the AP printing interface, but I hope that in the major upgrade to v. 1.5.0 this has been resolved.
  22. Call me dumb, but for the life of me I cant figure out how to change the color of text that I have warped / used the mesh on? I can change the color of text prior but not after warping it? Cheers Ryan :D
  23. Hi all I am a newbie so please forgive me if the question is trivial and/or has already been asked and answered. As an assignment to make a presentation I have been given a bunch of JPGs taken indoor with a flash. There aren't red eyes, probably automatically corrected, but there are many of those tiny reflections especially on women's lipstick, eyelashes, hair, and so on. They are fully clipped so a regular highlight correction is useless. It would rather need an impainting technology. I can't imagine myself correcting each of those highlights with the Impainting Tool. I am not supposed to do any correction and it's a pro bono job. Is there a way to do it all at once, a tool giving the order: “impaint all highlights in that area”? TIA Regards Nick
  24. I would upload this video as an attachment here but I got an error saying that I'm not permitted to upload videos. Observe this video: https://streamable.com/8ksst On the touch strip I am able to simply tap and drag (e.g., the volume) to adjust settings. On the Affinity Photo touch bar controls you have to tap to open the slider and then you can use a separate sliding motion to adjust the slider. I think it would be great if the Affinity Photo touch bar controls worked like the control strip controls.
  25. Affinity Designer and Photo for Windows do not currently include the ability to scan documents within applications. I understand scanning is an issue with Affinity Designer and Photo under Windows, as some scanner manufacturers only provide 32-bit, not 64-bit driver support. https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/32310-aquiring-photos-from-scanners/?p=156987 However, some scanner manufacturers do provide 64-bit scanner drivers. Until there is a solution within Affinity products to provide 32-bit scanner driver support (if such a solution will be developed)... PLEASE provide 64-bit scanner support. For several years now Windows operating systems have been primarily 64-bit, as 32-bit operating systems cannot address more than between 3.5Gb to 4Gb of RAM. Most systems (especially systems for graphic design and similar) come pre-installed with more then 4 Gb RAM, requiring a 64-bit OS. Though some/many scanner manufacturers are not keeping up with the need for 64-bit scanner drivers, the need is firmly established, and will only grow, and become a hard requirement for those purchasing scanners. If only 64-bit scanner driver support is incorporated into Affinity Designer and Photo, that would provide Affinity software users the ability to scan within the applications, with provided 64-bit drivers. With newer scanners, users have a strong argument for scanner manufacturers to provide 64-bit drivers. With new scanners, users can return their scanner in favor of scanners providing the needed 64-bit drivers. The problem is: Microsoft Windows does not include the ability to use both 32-bit and 64-bit drivers for both 32-bit and 64-bit applications (i.e. a level of abstraction in the scanner subsystem); All scanner manufacturers are not providing 64-bit Windows drivers; Affinity Windows applications do not provide any scanner driver support. Supporting 64-bit scanner drivers for Windows Affinity applications provides a solution for Affinity application users and shifts the problem/blame to Microsoft and scanner manufacturers.
