  1. I’m evaluating the Affinity Designer Brush for my art drawing. One nice feature in Adobe Illustrator, I find, is the ability to edit a path by simply selecting it and hand-drawing over it. With each stroke, you get to remodel the path and refine it until perfect. Let’s say I draw an oval with the brush in free hand: there will be small bumps and flat areas, and the endpoints will be open. After selecting it, I can easily smoothen the curve by drawing over it, and I can connect the two endpoints and close the path smoothly the same way. The process is very natural and intuitive. So far I haven’t found a similar feature in Affinity Designer. It would be great to have it!
  2. Curvature Combs visualize the curvature of a Bezier curve in order to enable the designer to draw smoother curves. See section 2.11 here: http://cagd.cs.byu.edu/~557/text/ch2.pdf Often I find my self in position that I drew a curve but it just does not look smooth enough and I fiddle around until it looks smooth. Would be great to have some more clear feedback.
  3. I don't know how to easily cut things in Designer. In the photo below I want to cut the highlighted part out and delete it. But I don't know how I would easily do it. Could I that path as a cutting tool. I already tried using the geometry things like divide, subtract, add, combine, intersect. Thanks!
  4. Argh. Created 3 x 120º segments (yes, to form a circle, thank you ) that were to hold text. I then spent the next half hour fighting the evil "text on a path" demons again, so eventually I gave up and created three plain circles so *I* was in control instead of whatever creation method was at the heart of a shape. Is there no way to tell a text on a text path to ignore the previous history of the shape that created the path (read: being flipped, rotated, mirrored, turned inside out and covered in bees - ANYTHING) and offer some options to solely make the TEXT flip, go into mirror mode, write backwards or upside down? As in controlling the actual component you are working instead of a hard and mostly invisible dependency on the characteristics and previous life of the underlying shape that created the path? I think adding that control to the text part would IMHO rather massively reduce the pain of text on a path. The present approach basically forbids the use of any normal shape manipulations such as flipping and mirroring because you end up paying dearly for that later when you convert it to a text path. You cannot flip or mirror the text on its own as you end up flipping the shape with it, which you then have to undo the effects of. Moving control to where it belongs ought to help. 5. Good day! If you would like to copy a part of any vectorshape, now you have to (1) copy the path, (2) select 2 nodes seperately, (3) break them, (4) ungroup the object, (5) delete the part you don't need. (6) break and delete node, if open path is required OR (1) copy the path, (2) draw a path on top of it that includes the area you'd like to keep, (3) mark the two objects, (4) use intersect-tool, (5) break and delete node, if open path is required I would very much like to simply (1) SELECT the part of a curve I want and then press (2) COPY+PASTE to paste the selection. Thank you for considering!
  6. WOW! Can I just say how awesome and robust the path vector editing is in Affinity Designer!! From the snapping to the alignment (especially when you hold down shift to align in either 90º, 45º, etc.). I'm becoming so impressed with this tool. The process is so clean and not clunky. Big praise!!
  7. A feature where you can make the stroke between two nodes invisible without changing the shape. So, you select two nodes and choose "make stroke invisible" and the stroke between those two nodes and not the whole path will be invisible.
  8. Hi In Photoshop is possible to create outline from selection. I can use Outline to create same, but quality is quite awful. Another way would be to create path from selection. Is it already in roadmap and when it would appear to AP? - Nikolai
  9. OK I am able to type text on path. All fine and good. My problem is the direction of the text on the path. When I type I would like the text to flow from left to right and at moment its going in the opposite direction as noted by the image I have attached... I imagine I will feel silly when someone explains what it is that I have done.
  10. Hi there! I googled a bit but i couldn't find a proper answer... Is there a way to make the top of the text to fit on a path? Here i found a tutorial for mine same problem but it's for Illustrator -> https://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/19589/make-top-of-type-sit-on-path-illustrator Thanks for the support!
  11. Hi all, More than likely very simple but has left me losing hours All I need to know is how to convert my text to a path so that I can for example place my text on a circle or arch... Many thanks in advance JP
  12. When placing round images on this u shaped path it distorts the images shape. The distortion also occurs on square and rectangle paths. It works fine for individual lines and circles.
  13. After over two years of working with AP I am really finding ways round some of it’s quirks and limitations. But a couple of things still have me stumped. 1) It is easy to convert a path or shape to a selection. However has anyone found a way to convert a selection to a path? 2) One of things I really miss in AP is the ability to easily combine selections to produce ‘compound’ selections. The commonest is adding individual selections to get a single combined selection. In PS this is a breeze just Cmd click the mask or layer thumbnails one by one while holding the Shift key. (Other key combos will subtract and intersect as well). I use this in PS all the time. It’s incredibly quick and useful. Sadly this doesn’t work in AP as the Shift is otherwise assigned. The best work around I have found is to load the selection from each layer or mask and then save it as a spare channel one layer at a time. By right clicking on them in the Channels palette one can then combine them as wished and then delete the channels. To call this slow and convoluted qualifies as masterly understatement. So has anyone found a better way? I seem to remember, many moons ago, there were promises from the development team of introducing killer linking. Is this a figment of my imagination or is something on the drawing board? This app is so, so good. But it could still get to be something really amazing. Please keep up the great work!
  14. Hello, I'm having an issue opening PSD files created in Adobe Photoshop CC2018 via Affinity Photo v1.6.6. I get a parse error when attempting to open the file, I couldn't seem to find any documentation of what exactly the error is referring to? Thanks! Connor
  15. Is there a way to edit options on text on a path. If I wanted to center the text on the given path, can I do that? If I wanted to flip the side of the start from left to right, can I? Are there any other options that may be useful for me to consider? Thanks!
  16. Good day everyone! I am trying to add a node here(refer to Sketch.png attached). I couldn't achieve it using the node tool, as it doesn't snap to the intersection. In Adobe Illustrator, we can achieve this by selecting both the open paths and selecting "divide" in the Pathfinder panel. When I do the same in AD, the straight line disappears and the open path(selected path) turns to a closed one. I'm trying to figure how to achieve this simple thing in AD. Please help!
  17. It would be nice if the current grid could be converted to paths. For one thing, any pattern you can make with the grid manager, which is a lot of patterns, can instantly be part of your actual composition. For another, it would make it possible to sort of have multiple grids at once. This would be useful for me: to have both a hexagonal grid and a rectangular grid at the same time.
  18. 1) "Synchronize defaults" don't set Assorted vector brush as a Default brush. New curves always have a Basic round brush stroke. 2) "Synchronize defaults" don't set Pressure curve if path have Assorted vector brush. New default curve will be set only if path have Basic round brush stroke. I suggest "Synchronize defaults" must remember all of the parameters of the selected curve for future use.
  19. Hi and thanks in advance. Is there a way of attaching text to a path inside a circle (see image), I can get it going on the outside but how is it done inside?
  20. Until a knife or cut tool comes along, I would love to see a delete node, as in gone feature. Instead of deleting the node and leaving the path closed as is currently, deleting the node and it breaks a hole in the path as far as the next two nodes are located. Could be with a modifier key... shift delete or option/alt delete. Sure would save a bunch of time. Current setup breaking the path route is cumbersome and leaves 2 nodes on top of each other, which you need to select and then delete, often selecting the wrong one...
  21. Hello, I'm not an expert at design, but as I've need things I go to youtube or whatever online tutorials I can find. The problem is, with the tutorials, even the most recent ones, they recommend what to do, however, I don't have what is suggested on my menu's anywhere. I am trying to convert my text to a curve, and have gone to layer to find the covert to text path, and it is not there. My menu's do not look the same as what i have seen on many tutorials for other things as well. I have paid the full version, and I have checked for updates aswell. Could anyone perhaps tell me why this would be? I have placed a screen shot of what is in my menu. Thanks.
  22. It would be nice if each document would remember where I last exported my slices for that particular document. At the moment it just opens the the "Select Folder" dialog to the last used folder in general, but when working with multiple documents that means I constantly have to reselect the porper output folder. I'm using version 1.5.3.69 on Windows 10 Hope this can be fixed/added in a future version!
  23. Hi! The problem is that vector object fill is always define clipping mask and affected by it. Even there is no fill color. At the same time object stroke don't define clipping mask at all and not affected by it. Here is example: Chain on the left is vector path with brush stroke with pixel "shadow" layer nested inside for clipping. Looking odd. On the right is same construction, but chain was rasterized. Please, check attached .afdesign layers to understand. I see two problems are: 1. Parent object fill is always affect the clipping mask 2. Clipping layer have nothing with parent object stroke I understand, that it's pure boolean logic happens there. But this make no sense and not what artist expected. My suggestion, that vector chain must be as his raster copy on the right. chain-clipping-mask.afdesign
  24. It was brought up in this topic: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/16297-any-way-to-force-everything-to-paths-when-exporting-to-svg/ Essentially, when I export to svg I want everything exported as <path>'s but I get some <rect>'s even though they are displayed as (Curve)'s. Is there a solution for this?
  25. Hi! I am new to Affinity Designer and already have searched the internet to find an answer. The Info I found is that the measurement tool was planned years ago, but nothing to measurements in the newest release. Is there any way to measure the length of a (curved) line in the newest version? I am interested in an exact measurement in physical units (mm). Thanks!
