  1. I'm trying to publish a paperback book on Amazon/KDP using Affinity Publisher. The problem is that half of the pages are missing when previewed on KDP. Per the KDP instructions, I created the AP document with "facing pages" layout (so margins and gutters are OK). My AP book contains 76 pages but the exported PDF only contains 39 pages. Page 1 in the PDF is OK but the remaining pages are "double-wides" -- each containing 2 "book pages". It looks like KDP is chopping off the right half of each PDF page so only the even-numbered (left-side) pages are left. I've contacted Amazon support but I'm guessing they're going to tell me to create a PDF with 76 pages -- i.e. one book page per PDF page. I've looked around the AP export options and don't see any way to do this. So, the question is, how do I export a 76-page "facing pages" document to a 76 page "single page" PDF? I hope this makes sense -- it's a little confusing. Thanks.
  2. What I Wish To Do: Export only desired artboards in my document as one single pdf. Each artboard to have its own page in that PDF. I know there have been a few similar topics to this but they differ slightly from what I am trying to achieve. This feature is available in Illustrator CC by doing the following: File > "save as copy" Choosing to save as pdf Then specifying the range of Artboards to be included in the one PDF. (As separate pages of course). I wish to avoid deleting unwanted artboards everytime I wish to export a PDF with only certain artboards included. Otherwise doing File>Export>PDF>"Whole Document" would work, but it's not ideal. Any chance there's now a setting in Export persona that can manage this? Thank you for any input on this. 3. Hi Has anyone else had issues with PDF imports? As you'll see from the screenshot below that the whole fonts and type have somehow changed while importing PDFs to publisher? Is there a fix around this? It's a basic part of what publishing software needs as saves a lot of work while trying to publish a magazine.
  4. I produce a 2-side mailer in Publisher that generated a huge PDF. I recreated the job in Xpress and generated a PDF 1/7th the size. There are other things that I don't like in Publisher (too many layers are generated, for instance) but they usually have work arounds & learning curves. Bloated PDFs are another thing. They are slow to load and quickly get too large for conventional email. In this case the Publisher file was 4 times the size of the Xpress file. The art in both files are the same. There are fewer options, as far as PDF creation goes, in Publisher than in Xpress. Both these PDFs are intended for print. The point is that if Publisher generates bloated PDFs, then it is not yet a pro application. Or have I done something wrong. Viera Mailer #4 APub.pdf Vieira Mailer #4.pdf
  5. Exported a document with text written using Roboto font to PDF in AD. But, it's appearing like this: The issue seems to be with the Thin variant only. Tried AP and there were no issues!
  6. I cant get a purchased EPS file to open in Photo without losing all resolution. It looks awful. What am I doing wrong?
  7. Hi friends. I'm curious to know why this warning is showing when exporting pdf files from Affinity Publisher? This is so disappointing. I don't want anything to be rasterised Is there any way to turn this option off? TIA!
  8. Hi All, I have a photobook I originally created in InDesign, and am porting over (manually recreating) into Affinity Publisher. I am having problems around color consistency while exporting. When exporting to JPG, colors visually match between InDesign and Affinity exports. I am having issues when exporting to PDF. InDesign PDF colors visually match JPG exports, but for the life of me I cannot get the Affinity Publisher PDF colors to match. I have confirmed visually by opening both PDFs in same reader side by side, as well as actually physically printing (3rd party) on paper. They are washed out and dull in comparison. I am attaching a page of the book from both. Please tell me what additional settings you need me to provide. Cheers! Affinity Publisher.pdf InDesign.pdf
  9. Greetings, I have run into a strange problem with regard to one of my fonts used in Publisher. For some reason which I can't explain, the smart quote characters (single and double) are being replaced upon export to PDF. The font in question is Zapf Humanist (all variants). To make sure it wasn't me screwing something up, I started a fresh Publisher document, added a text frame, and entered text, formatting for a half dozen fonts. Every font I tried looked as it should in the PDF export except Zapf Humanist. The odd thing is everything looks fine in the application (see image). I thought that maybe a font was corrupted, but to have the error happen across all font files seems strange and unlikely to me. Is this a bug or have I done something wrong? Any thoughts would be appreciated. With thanks, Lee Affinity Publisher 1.7.2Windows 10 HomeIntel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz16GB Memory2TB HDD / 128GB SSD
  10. The attached Affinity Designer project illustrates how different drawing techniques can result in pdf export files that differ is size substantially. I discovered this while developing images that are to used in an iOS app. Of course, we can expect the size of the pdf file to impact the performance of the app. The attached AD project has three artboards. Each artboard has a separate drawing of a flower - all of which look much the same: Yellow-Flower: The pdf for web file size is 282 KB. Each of the twelve petals is a separate curve object with yellow fill and a black stroke. The inner pistils is comprised of 27 brown ellipses imbedded inside a single black eclipse. Red-Flower: The pdf for web file size is 31 KB. The twelve petals is comprised four curve objects (each represent three leaves) with red fill and black stroke . The inner pistils is comprised of 27 brown ellipses imbedded inside a single black eclipse. (Same as yellow flower.) Blue-Flower: The pdf for web file size is 176 KB. The twelve petals is comprised four curve objects (each represent three leaves) with blue fill and black stroke (same as red flower). The inner pistils is comprised of a single black curve imbedded inside a single brown ellipse. Why are these file sizes so different? The yellow flower has only nine additional petal curve objects compared to the red flower. Yet, the pdf file size is also nine times the size. Note, the the pistils are the same. The blue flower uses the same petals as the red flower. However the pistils were refactored into only two objects, one complex curve and one ellipse. The complex object was created by subtracting the 27 ellipses from a single ellipse. The result of this distillation of the pistils causes the pdf file size to grow from 32 KB to 180 KB. is there a knowledge-based article that will help me understand why this occurs and how to avoid these problems during design? 11. Preflight at the printers warns that the PDF does not overprint black even though the option "Overprint black" was selected when exporting. I don't have Acrobat, so I can't check it. 12. Hi, I have an issue when exporting to PDF a Publisher document with black Backgrounds created with rectangle box layers (R0-G0-B0), no Transparency: The export option "PDF for WEB" and "PDF/X4" give always correct Results, but "PDF for Export" and "PDF for Print" produces a grey background instead of a black one. After unsinstalling (with AppCleaner) and reinstalling Affinity Publisher (Version : 1.7.2), creating a new File with 3 pages seemed to work well. But after adding either a new page or duplicating a page or master page, the problem reappeared. Once the problem had occurred, no way to get aware of it. Actually, even creating a new file with only one page and master gives a grey instead of balck backround of when exported to PDF for Print. 13. Hi, I used Affinity Photo for calendar design last year, and imported the days of the months from PDFs generated by Preview.app. This worked well in last year's version – see the upper part of the attached file. However, the latest version 1.7.2 breaks the very same PDF – and all the new ones for that matter – see lower part. It displays correctly in Photoshop, Keynote, and other apps, but not Affinity Photo. Is there a solution in sight?
  14. Hi, A client sent me a pdf file to work with. One of the pages opens with no problem. The other has a mesh like a pattern from a fabric and affinity designer just opens a red immage. In my pdf reader its fine. Does anyone know what is happening? I already made a repair to the program but not changes. Update: I printed the file with a PDF printer and was able to open the file as an image. Not ideal solution. Does anyone have some idea of what is happening and how to resolve it? I spent 2 days back and forth with the client cause they didn't understand why I was seeing a red image. teste.pdf
  15. I have created a new project with a few master pages, each of them as facing pages. All appears to be well until I output to PDF, and at that point, Publisher puts the first page on a portrait page, as expected, but places subsequent page pairs on paper in landscape, two pages per sheet. I have reviewed the tutorial for Master pages, the help on the subject, and have looked high and low in settings for anything which might affect this. Is this a known issue, of have I missed something?
  16. While the ability to edit PDFs is nice, I would also like the ability to embed a PDF without it being "translated"/"interpreted". To have "PDF pass-through". If Publisher could access the fonts embedded in the PDF, that would be AWESOME; I don't always have the fonts installed that are used in PDFs, and the entire purpose of the format is to be able to share a layout without having to install fonts to see it displayed correctly.
  17. Hi All, I am new to Designing. And trying to create editable PDF files for my client. What are my current options? Can I create editable PDF directly on any of the Affinity products? If not, how can i go about it? Can I create designs etc on Affinity designer app and then somehow make the PDF editable to be filled by someone. Only basic few words need to be editable. Please help. thanks.!!
  18. Hi there, I have to say I really appreciate your effort and I do like your apps. I still hassitate about switching from CS6, but there are people around who made the step and rely on your apps. I was asked for help by one of those people with a relatively simple document in Publisher. We sorted things out, but then I looked closely at an advert that came from exterlan studio as a usual PDF and I could not believe my eyes. The document had all fonts substituted! It did a relatively good job and the difference was not huge, but still - it was different. I tried to import the file in a different way, looked in the preferences for some kind of a switch, that would allow to leave the PDF as is and not parse it on import. NOTHING. So I tried the other two apps, hoping for a way of at least rasterizing the PDF in Photo. NOTHING. I have not found a way of including the external PDF in the publisher document so that it looks as intended. If that is correct (and it is not my mistake of not finding a way) then it is a BUG hidden behind the facade of a feature. The software is unusable for everyone who needs to include external PDFs in his documents, because there is no way of having all the fonts included in any external PDF. And there is no way of having all texts in the external PDFs outlined. It might work with 50 % of them, but the rest... Q1: Is there really no way of importing a PDF "AS IS" (without parsing is and thus substituting missing fonts and altering the look of the document)? Q2: Is there really no way of rasterizing a PDF "AS IS" (without parsing is and thus substituting missing fonts and altering the look of the document)? Suggestion: If the imported PDF had and option (at least in Photo and Publisher) to leave the PDF intact and parsing it only if the user needs it... that would solve the problem (it could be rasterized and imported as bitmap (only a suggestion). I understand, that designers who do not import PDFs from other designers do not encounter this problem, but for all the others (including me) it is rendering the apps unusable. If the above statements are true, PLEASE try to solve this very soon. Thanks. Marek
  19. I have a fairly large table of contents (2 column, 1 page) with maybe ~100 entries (20 chapters, the rest level 2) in a PDF that has 164 pages. About 95% of the hyperlinks in the TOC in the generated PDF go to the correct page. However, there's a handful that go to the next page (TOC page + 1) instead of page 86 or 87 or whatever it says in the TOC. This works for almost everything and requires me to click on each specific link to make sure it's valid or not. This is another deal breaker (besides the ability to generate PDF bookmarks from TOC or header styles or whatever) for digital publishers - when the TOC hyperlinks doesn't work! And there's no bookmarks! So users reading large documents will get a subpar PDF experience! Also, what's also annoying is that I need to insert a column break to prevent orphan chapter/section (the last entry on col 1 is a chapter title with it's subsections at top of col 2, so I insert a col break to make it look correct), then I get the pop-up saying "TOC has changed" on every.single.export. Even though nothing has change. I just added a col break inside of the TOC. Edit: Added image from Acrobat Pro that shows the hyperlink properties. This hyperlink property is for the chapter "Sembia" and page "88" link below it, but it says Page 4 (TOC is on Page 3).
  20. Hi, Affinity Publisher, 1.7.2, OSX Mojave, iMac retina 5k Publisher crashes when exporting as PDF, either already in the export dialog after a few seconds or at the latest at export itself, if PDF-X 1a/X-3/X-4 is not(!) selected as PDF format. Reproducible, every time. I tried PDF 1.4 instead of PDF 1.7 compatibility in export for Web, the same result. Only with PDF-X the export works (fortunately). The document is a 56-page brochure, 60-70 MB. I have several older versions of the document, the first version doesn't have the error, all later versions crash after a few seconds. Best Thomas

  22. My understanding is that the PDF specification allows an attachment to be included in a PDF file. Adobe Reader allows one to extract the attachment(s) from a PDF file that contains one or more attachments. Could Affinity Publisher please have the facility to include an attachment in a PDF file when it is produced? I have a reason for this request. I read recently that (some? many? all?) desktop publisher programs will not allow the editing of a PDF using a font embedded in the PDF unless the font is also installed on the computer. I appreciate that that is to protect the intellectual property rights of font producers and I do not object to that at all and I hope that nobody purports that this request is to circumvent that protection of intellectual property rights. However, if the producer of the font is the also author of the PDF document and the font is for a specialist purpose, it would be helpful to be able to include the font as an attachment to the PDF as well as it being embedded in the PDF and that would be entirely lawful. I appreciate that if the PDF is made available from a website then the font could also be made available from the same website. Yet when sending items to the British Library for legal deposit, the PDF can be included in the catalogue but, as I understand it, the font cannot. So having the font embedded in the PDF would greatly help in archiving for the future. I note however that the British Library does accept fonts for legal deposit as long as they are published. I have deposited various fonts for legal deposit at the British Library and it is likely that I was the first person to do. I appreciate that including this facility will take work, yet I do not how much work. So it is a partly a matter of how long it would take to include and how difficult a task it would be to do it William
  23. Hey! Maybe someone can help me on this: I just want to export a layout from Publisher as a PDF/X3 with K-only - or better: a grey only document wherein are shades of K only (from 1% to 100%). Whenever I use the grey color space setting for export - my document color space is set to grey too - it ends up turning greys into CMYK even if a stroke or form is K-only in Publisher... How might I export such a grey (K-only) PDF correctly? All the best, Chris
  24. New to the forum, I have by now purchased, downloaded and installed all three Affinity programs (Win 7), and am hoping that Designer can do what both Acrobat Pro and ABBYY Finereader refuse to do. I have a 200-page PDF document that apparently was created, by someone else, in some sort of automated scanner-to-OCR-to-PDF application. The original paper document's pages were 4.25" wide by 7.0" high, but throughout the PDF document they vary somewhat in both directions - in some cases larger, in other cases smaller. The font color throughout is a medium-to-dark gray - notwithstanding that the font color in the original was black. Acrobat Pro XI and DC both are able to correctly crop the over-size pages in both dimensions, but both versions of that program absolutely refuse to increase the under-size values. ABBYY Finereader, OTOH, can be finagled to generate new pages of the correct size, but in doing so it screws up the line justifications on almost every page. So, in addition to needing to make sure all pages end up the desired 4.25" wide by 7.0" high, I need to change the font color to solid black, throughout the document. Acrobat can only do this a single page at a time, which would otherwise be barely tolerable; but in making these labor-intensive color changes it often royally screws up the line justifications and general fit of the text blocks on each page. My version of ABBYY Finereader can change font color only one line at a time, which basically makes the program worthless for my purposes. Bluebeam eXtreme can do what I need to do, but its $549 (US) price is way beyond my current budget. So, before I wade deeply into Designer and risk even more "manual hair loss," does it sound as though the program can be made to do what I need to do? Thank you! MarkT
  25. Hi all, I often get PDF from clients which the vector layers are in many groups and sub groups, and what I need is to merge all the layers to only one curve layer, but I can't find a way to do it since when I select the top most group the Merge Curves option is greyed out. Is there a way to achieve this in a easy or smooth way? Cheers, Juan
