  1. Hello everybody, I'm creating floor plans with Affinity Designer and have recurrent objects like printers, door bells, switch panels etc. that I want to appear identically in all documents. How can I create an object that I can use within my ad documents and that is still editable at one object? IOW: When I want to redesign the shape of the doorbell object (svg) I do this on the very root object and the effect takes place wherever this object is embedded? I couldn't find a hint about it throughout the forum or Google. Thank You very much in advance for Your support. 🐵 -Rembrandt
  2. I am working on a repeat pattern utilizing the symbols capability. However, there is an object that is not syncing up properly and no matter what I try, it will not go all the way back or even underneath the symbol that it is crossing over. I am not sure what to do because I've tried sending to the back the initial object on Artboard 1. That did not work. I re-layered the objects so that the selected curve (and its whole group) are underneath the object I want on top, but that does nothing. I have no idea what I am missing or doing incorrectly. Not sure how to fix this. Included is a screen shot of what is happening. I wasn't able to find any FAQ topics that answered or mentioned my question. In the screenshot the object selected is the one I want on top. The vine crossing over it is definitely included in the group that is below that object. I have checked every section, grouping, and layer of each Artboard and every occurrence of that repeating vine. All the other occurrences of that vine are behaving as desired. Not sure what is happening with the top half of the repeat on the right. Hopefully it's an easy fix and that I am simply clueless. Affinity Designer 2, latest update, iPad Pro.
  3. Hey everyone, today, when I open a document that I was working on yesterday perfectly fine, I get the following error message: What does »link« mean in this context and how can I fix it? How can I see which links/objects have been removed? Edit: I used no linked images/objects to begin with, only a couple of embedded screenshots and symbols. Thanks!
  4. Hi. I'd like to learn how to paste objects from other photos to one photo, e.g. I've got the original photo and I'd like to copy a person from other photo and paste it to the original. Of course it has to look real (select, copy and paste is something I already can do ). So the object fits into the photo, shade, color, light, W&B, how it interacts with the ground it's standing on etc. I know it's a pretty difficult so I'm not asking you to show me how to that, but is there any tutorial/course, free or paid, doesn't matter on this topic? The thing is, I don't know if this whole process has it's own name? How to even google it?
  5. I design pop-up books and would like to use Designer as a replacement for Vectorworks CAD software I have used for the last 20 years, but has become prohibitively expensive since it switched to a subscription only version. One simple function I need a lot that's missing from Designer is the ability to flip objects along a custom angled axis – not just horizontally or vertically, which I know Designer can do. In the screen shot below, I'd like to a tool that allows me to flip the object along the dotted line between A and B, ideally simply by clicking and dragging a flip axis line between A and B. I understand that a similar function is available in Adobe Illustrator, but at the moment, the quickest way I've been able to do this in Designer is by duplicating the object, flipping it horizontally and moving and rotating the duplicate until the two axis lines line up, which is a lengthy workaround. I've seen other people requesting this function in this post: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/59694-can-i-flip-mirror-a-shape-through-a-pointaxis-of-choice/
  6. Hi All, I am working with multiple artboards; I moved some around, and now some of the artboards are blank, but the objects are still showing: I'm not sure what to do - the objects are checked. I've tried bringing to front - nothing happens. I double click on the object and it zooms in to a blank box with the lines around the object: I'm not sure what to do next. Thanks for any help! Brian
  7. I have created some very simple vector objects. Some are on Artboards and some are not. Recently, when I select the object to export, the output saved (as PNG or JPG doesn't matter) often includes a random are of blank white space behind it, that was never selected. I have used Designer for several years and never had this problem until recently. Ultimately I have to crop what should be a clean image, down to the correct dimensions. The problem starts in the selecting process. Does not matter if I'm in Designer or Pixel Personas mode. EX: If my selected object of choice is square, I will see the size box improperly showing as some rectangular dimension. Not even close to square. When saved, the resulting file show a huge rectangular area of empty space with the desired object in the lower right corner. I understand not to select the entire workspace or artboard - I am only selecting the desired object. This also happens with or without the background included. It's clearly not right but I can find no help to fix it. Please advise ASAP. I am wasting a lot of time doing added work that I never had to before.
  8. Here I'm going to post some of my fantasy stuff, starting with this little object. It's for an imaginary world people who live there call Merilmaa (from Finnish words meri (sea), ilma (air) and maa (earth). Compare with Finnish word maailma for world). This object was very much valued, and not that rare in the early days of "Merilmaa", for it literally muted (for one using it) everything someone else said, that didn't correlate with truth or perhaps, one might say, weren't wise. How ever, it is doubtful this item ever silenced everything someone said, for all of us have some wisdom worth sharing. You just sometimes have to listen long enough to get some gold. Naturally people don't like being told they're wrong, so many considered this object "rude", if not a "false witness" or even "a wicked and extremely dangerous thing". Also people used these to bully others by claiming nothing they said was audible when they applied this thing, so it's use by certain kinds of folks actually became a real problem. After some time these things first lost their value, then became exceedingly rare, then got all but forgotten. A good thing or a bad thing? Perhaps it depends... The background is a paper I first made to look old using a method I found from wikihow a long time ago. I scanned it and have since kept the scanned image safe and sound, so I can use it again and again. This is the first work where I've used isometric drawing, and will probably not be the last one. For final touch. I made the colour mode of the object "darker" so as to make it look as if it'd been drawn to the paper. The runes on the little blades are of my own invention. they signify "S" "A" "N" "A" which is Finnish for "WORD". Using Isometric mode it was no big deal to put the runes on the blades. I think it might be nice if Affinity had an isometrics system with possibility for perspective (things being smaller further away from the view), but that might be extremely difficult to achieve in a user friendly way. Thanks for watching.
  9. Is there a way to offset the path of an object (to create a new path / object that isn't just a scale of the first object)? Please see attached: Thanks!
  10. Is it possible in Designer to align a group of objects (in my case images) to a path (in my case a circle)? And is it possible to then set the orientation of those objects either in their normal way (in my case upright) or aligned to the path, meaning rotated according to the "angle" of the path?
  11. I'm having some issues working with object properties on Designer. I want the default vector properties to be the same as a previous made object. On illustrator that was very easy, select and object and the next one you draw will have exactly the same properties. (Current object sets the defeault properties) On Designer im struggling to set the current properties. I know that i cant select and copy and object and paste properties only, but that doesn't modifies the current default properties (And doesn't preserve all properties, like gradient lines). Also i must paste style on all new objects as pasting style does not change the default properties. Question is. Does Designer have a way to change current properties based on and object as illustrator does? Is the one thing that makes me work slower than on illustrator at this moment.
  12. @Sean P and the vector team many have asked for a new way to manage shadow on objects etc (myself included) so I propose that the vector Team investigate on Logoist by Synium software; it has an acceptable way of doing things when it comes to shadow (drop down, long shadow etc.) and maybe from there you can build something pretty and original. I'm enjoying current Beta phase a lot but I believe many have needs so even small implementation can and would help to be patient and tempted not to hop between apps. Help us Help you guys. Thanks and Blessings.
  13. Hi there, I´m missing the 'distribute with spacing' function from InDesign. I did not found a workaround for Publisher to distribute objects with no space. Are there any plans to realized that in upcoming versions? Thanks for your great work! Bekim
  14. I've recently switched from Adobe CC to the Affinity suite. One thing that I really rely on in InDesign is the Libraries function, so that I can save groups of layout items that I reuse frequently and then just drag and drop them onto whatever document I'm working on. I use it mostly for interface mockups, so there's a lot of toolbars, buttons, icons, menu objects etc that I need to frequently reuse. Neither the Symbols nor Assets functions seem to be exactly what I'm looking for. It isn't about managing imported graphics nor is it about updateable placeholders, it's about reusable sets of geometry, tables and text boxes with effects settings saved with them. Is there anything like this in Publisher? If not, is it on a roadmap for a future release? (And yes, it'd be really cool if it could sync between machines via iCloud or Affinity's own sync service).
  15. As shown in the video, I am very confused as to why the text isn't wrapping properly when I 'edit detached' the height of an object that is created on the master page. Screen_Recording_2020-08-15_at_4_34.07_PM.mov
  16. Hi, Is there a way to convert multiple nodes from multiple objects at once (without merging objects)? Even though I'm selecting multiple nodes here, it won't convert unless I select each object separately, then select all nodes from within each object. Not productive at all.
  17. Is there a way to select vector objects that have the same fillingmode or -color or stroke color? In Illustrator there is. An I can't work without this feature.
  18. 1. Is there a single Publisher command that is the equivalent of executing both Align:Middle and Align:Center via a single command? 2. On a double-page spread, Align:Center puts an object in the precise center of the spread. Is there an alignment command that quickly centers an object within the page where it is located, rather than the current spread?
  19. Hi all, I recently abandoned Illustrator to use Affinity Designer on a Macbook Pro. When I use the MOVE tool to select multiple objects, I see that only 249 objects maximu will be highlighted with blue outlines. If I select 250 or more objects, and the outlines of individual objects no longer show up, which is a real pain. I want to visualize which objects I have selected. Can anyone suggest a fix for this? Thanks!
  20. I've probably read all the posts on the forums about this topic. Even the ones from almost 3 year ago. Yet the issue still remains. Is there a way to snap objects together without having a gap between the objects? I have tried the force pixel alignment and move by whole pixels. I also find that this does not only happen when snapping shapes to shapes, but also having a shape on top of another shape. It is also visible when a shape is on the side of the art board and exported to PDF format. I also tested this in Adobe Illustrator CS6, which is old, and I don't see this issue when putting shapes next to each other and exporting the file to other formats(jpg, png). The strange part is, while writing this post, I tested it in two documents. In the one I see the gaps and then in another the gap between the two shapes are gone. Please see the documents attached with examples. snapping_test.afdesign shows the gaps and snapping_test_successful.afdesign exports correctly without showing any gaps in the exported file, only in Designer itself. Please explain this, or I would really appreciate if this can be fixed or improved with an update. snapping_test_successful.afdesign snapping_test.afdesign
  21. I frequently have objects with different parents which should always transform together, for example I can have an Erase object which cuts a certain layer and reveals itself underneath, something like this (but generally much more complicated): They are separated so I can export the layers individually. It would be good if I could save a selection of objects (whose relative positions, rotations, and sizes should always be maintained), similar to how snapshots or symbols are created. Then if I want to move them all I can easily select them all, by selecting the selection group.
  22. If you right-click a swatch and make a copy, then rename the copy, you have two swatches of the same color. AFPUB does not respect their name differences. When you apply the second swatch to an object, and then come back to that object later, it will have reverted to the original swatch and name since the two swatches have the same HSL - the swatch becomes highlighted when you select an object - the wrong swatch. This is a bit problematic if you wish to, say, assign #one swatch to section one of the document and assign #two swatch to section two of the document. The idea would be to come back later and change the colors of section two via editing the second swatch (the copy). It seems that you have to make a slight HSL change so that the objects don't confuse AFPUB by having the same HSL values. Essentially, this means you have to create a new colour swatch for section two that is not a complete duplicate of swatch #1. Screen recording: two picture objects, a single color swatch is used on each. Copy that swatch to make a duplicate. Assign duplicate swatch to second item. Select first object - uses original swatch. Select second object - original swatch is highlighted. Swatch copy is ignored and not used since it is entirely a duplicate. I would prefer to have an object keep the same swatch that was assigned and not revert to another with the same settings. Swatch Reverts.mov
  23. Can Affinity Photo load up 3D models like Photoshop can, so they can either be painted, or more importantly used in an image?
  24. Hi guys, First of all - big thank you for: IDML support, New Document dialog, Preflight Check and Smart Objects. Brilliant, brilliant things. Now for the things that need to be updated or changes or fixed: Distance between objects: I noticed you made a little change to the displaying the distance between objects. However many times it is still cover by the top handling line and the numbers cannot be seen. And also - since this update I am unable to see the distance between any two objects next to each other. For example - I have a text box, under which is a picture frame, then another text box, line divider and another text box. And when moving the top text box, instead of showing the distance between that box and the picture frame, it shows the distance to the next text box. Which doesn't make sense to me. I absolutely need to be able to see the distance while moving the certain elements. (under snapping I have everything enabled for all the layers - except for Force Pixel Alignment). Am I missing something here? On all the screenshots you can see the problem related to the objects' distances. On two screenshots you also see the problem with the distance number not fully visible. What would help here would be either the numbers nex to the line and not directly on it. Or - which is a better solution I think - displying the number horizontaly next to the line.
