  1. Hi, when i select a part of my picture and try to insert the selection with ctrl+j into an layer i get this behaviour like shown in the attached video. Is this a Bug or a feature or do i have to make some settings in the Preferences? Regards aXel selection_behaviour.mp4
  2. Keyboard Shortcuts in Win10 for Layer Arrange Funktion don't work! Those are the culprits: Ctrl+] Ctrl+Shift+] Ctrl+[ Ctrl+Shift+[
  3. I have an image where some parts need sharpening and some parts need denoising or smoothing. The obvious way to do this is to create a mask that divides the image into these two component parts. No problem, I create an edge mask as a new layer and refine it appropriately. I could now duplicate my original image and sharpen one version (using Nik Sharpener) and denoise the other using Nik DFine. The mask should now be able to ensure that what I see is partly sharpened and partly denoised. But I cannot see how I can place the mask I have created to perform this task. I Because sharpening and denoising are fairly subtle, I have been practicing on an an image and a desaturated version, and a layer comprising several vertical black-and-white stripes so that I should be able to see a fairly obvious mask effect. I have tried following various videos and on-line guides typically involving moving the stripy mask into a position on one of the layers, but what I see is always either the stripy mask or no effect at all. The image below shows what I see before trying to place the mask. Any advice gratefully received. John
  4. How do I open new image files and have them go into a new layer? So far the only way I can get a new image into a layer is to open it, it opens in a new 'project(?)', a completely separate window. Then I select the image, copy, then go back to the project I'm working on and paste it into a layer. There has to be a direct way to just point to a file and have it open in the selected layer.
  5. I have a layer of place names on a map. I've applied 'MyStyle 1' to them all as I've typed them in. I can change their look by just editing 'MyStyle 1'. So far, so good. If I click the layer, all the place names are selected but if I try to now apply 'MyStyle 2' to them it doesn't work. I have to actually select all the items in the layer to change the applied style. That doesn't seem quite right to my way of thinking. Is this a bug, are the correct way of working?
  6. Hey all, I've been lurking on these forums for a while since I purchased Photo and Designer. I've also been using Serif software since the early 2000's starting with PhotoPlus 6.0 I think. Loving the software and looking forward to all the new stuff in the works. I came across a problem with cropping an image on a single layer. Every time I would crop, it would crop the entire canvas. I played with the software a bit and was able to come up with a quick way to crop an image on a single layer without affecting the others. I don't know if this information exists somewhere else on this forum but I could not find it anywhere. Please see the video below if you're interested: If anyone has any other ideas for tutorials I'm open to suggestions. Thanks, Collin
  7. Hi. At the bottom right corner of the screen in Affinity Photo, there is only one layer option, the pixel layer option. There were both options for layers mere hours ago. How could I get it back? Thanks. draeko
  8. Hi guys, At the moment I'm fighting with the theme of assets, symbols and grouping in the Affinity Designer. Compared to the illustrator, Affinity has revolutionized the handling of symbols and I am "relatively" satisfied with the available tools, but there is still room for improvement! I've been looking for the same ideas for a long time. There are many suggestions with different content and it is very difficult to follow them, so I do not know whether there have been similar proposals or not. So, let's go! With the identical objects I was able to help myself with assets and symbols, but when it comes to working on other forms in a group simultaneously, it's over with fun. Replacing symbols or objects with inheritance of their original size and position is not possible in Affinity Designer or I haven't found a function for it yet. I have found a good example of how such a thing can or has been realized in Microsoft Powerpoint (2013). It is not a real illustration program but the simple way to modify objects is unsurpassed! Please have a look at the examples here and I am curious about your review. Is this a "Nice to Have" feature for you or a feature that allows you to work quickly, effectively and flexibly? Or is such a feature already in your portfolio? Here you will find some visual examples without the generation of symbols "cloning" like in AD: Objects can be modified individually or together in a group. Different objects can be modified together Objects can be replaced together or independently. The size, position and rotation of the original object is taken over. Just a very simple drawing like the pentaptych or tryptichon is a challenge in AD An example of how PowerPoint works. Try to do this in AD with symbols at the same time and then replace them afterwards. In addition, AD (such as Adobe Illustrator CC and Incscape. With the exception of the CAD programs, because it would be fatal) a strange feature to deform the symbol duplicates (which are changed in their aspect ratio) during rotation. It is also not possible to edit the symbols in the "quasi" mask group, since this group is converted to a solid layer.
  9. I was trying to follow the tutorial from @MikaG on How to: Sharpening with Edge Masks from January 14th, 2016. This worked OK on a couple of trial images. I then tried to record his procedureas a macro. This involved merging three layers, the modified background layer and two adjustment layers. This worked fine in my macro-free trial, but would not work when recording as a macro. The message I get when trying to select one of these layers is quite opaque. I get the same message with each of the layers I seek to merge. Is selecting a layer in such circumstances a proscribed operation when recording macros? I note that @MikaG comments that: "Once the function of Actions is added to Affinity Photo it will become a task even faster". John
  10. I was wondering if it would be interesting to create space for a notes field in the file properties (I'm aware I'm opening a can of worms there, IMHO there should also be room for data such as creator, company and copyright which then inevitably segways into a discussion about EXIF data too - allow me to stay away from that for now). I've seen someone talk about a description/information layer but that's inside the design, what I'm talking about is the ability to store meta data with the document which describes content, with or without tags and other fun stuff that you could actually search for if the search facility, file system or DAM supports it. At the moment, the only means to store data with a design is to add a box somewhere with some description or rely on a DAM to add external tags to a file which can get lost and which do not travel with the file in a makeshift collaborative environment. Ironically, document properties are a default feature in wordprocessors such as MS Office and LibreOffice which are the one facility that needs it less because you can actually search in the file contents - no such luck with graphics.. Opinion?
  11. I'm not sure if this has been requested or not. In fact it might already be in Affinity Designer but I couldn't find an option to move an object from one layer to another (without changing its position). I looked for it in the beta as well and I couldn't find it. If it is there could someone clue me into where to look and if it isn't there, I would like to suggest it to be added (in time of course).
  12. Hi, Infinity Photo lacks an option to change the size of the Layer Thumbnail images. This has always been an odd omission, the point of the thumbnails is being able to see at a glance what layer you are working on and what it contains. When I worked on a 1920x1080 resolution monitor it was manageable to a degree - but still frustrating, but now I have a more professional sized resolution monitor at 2560x1440, the thumbnails are so tiny, they may as well not be there. Can we please have an option to enlarge the thumbnails like Photoshop/Gimp etc has. Thanks, Jay.
  13. In Affinity designer, every time you make an object, it create it own layer for it. Is there a way to change this?
  14. When using the layer blend mode pop out and wanting to scroll through the modes, it is visually glitchy and doesn’t show the results of the blend mode choice (like it used to) until a choice is made and you exit the pop out. You used to be able scroll through the modes and see the results as you scroll. iPad Pro iOS 11.2.2 Affinity Photo 1.6.5 thanks
  15. I'm Affinity iPad newbie. Looked high and low and tried all I can, but.....how does one copy a selection to a new layer that can be blended with the original layer? Something I do easily and repeatedly in PS. Yes, I can do it on mainframe Affinity. Many thanks for the help!
  16. Please Serefteam, create in AP the Option to Change the layer thumbnailsize larger. Regards Armin
  17. I feel like I must be missing something basic, but I cannot get a mask onto a layer. The issue may be that a pixel layer and a mask layer are totally different things, and never the twain shall meet. If so--and I think this has to be my ignorance--then that's a terrible design flaw. Background: I have an image where the foreground and sky need very different raw conversion to look good. Years ago in GIMP I painstakingly created a very detailed mask to combine TIFFs from the two different raw conversions. Now I want to use Affinity Photo to do the same thing, so I can work from 16-bit TIFFs in ProPhotoRGB instead (the stable version of GIMP is limited to 8 bits per channel, so ProPhoto RGB is not a good choice). So I exported from GIMP the layer mask as a TIFF. It opens fine in Affinity. I can paste it as a layer into the same file with the two raw conversions, but when I a Mask to Below, although the operation seems to work, it does not have the masking effect. I've also tried New Mask Layer followed by Paste Inside, but I can't seem to get my previously-created layer mask to function as an Affinity layer mask. I have to believe there's a way to paste into a mask a pre-existing layer, and thereby use it to create a mask. So how do I do it? Thanks!
  18. It seems that the adustement is always working on the entire image instead of what I selected or on the layer I need to adjust, I dont find it very instinctive and it seems to be so logic to make it that way. Also, when I select an area with the selecting tool, I can’t move it around, it only moves the layer and the selection remains where I made it. Also, I read before that the perspective option like warp and all those option doesnt exist, so what is the perspective tool for in the projection section?
  19. UPDATED: paint brush DOES NOT WORK when painting a mask as shown in affinity tutorial 2 pixel layers, black mask on the top one, I select the brush and white paint and try to paint on the mask, nothing happens. Am I missing something? you paint masks with black and white to mask out or in things right? EDIT: can confirm even after watching affinity tutorial on masking, paint bursh does not work atall on a mask, it doesn't wor for painting white nor black, the only available thing is to "paint" the mask with the eraser tool, operation which is not reversable. Help, there must be something wrong
  20. Hi, is there a shortcut or a way to show a layer mask, like the way when i draw the mask in quickmask mode. I need a way to show an already painted mask as an overlay. like the example
  21. hello all, and happy new year! please i need some explanation about refining selections to "new layer and mask". i did the following experiment on the attached image: 1) select the background of the image with the selection brush 2) invert pixel selection 3) refine selection (default values, except for a bigger brush) 4) select "new layer and mask" 5) apply i'm not interested in how the quality of the selection could be enhanced (i.e. applying some feather during the refine process): instead, i can't understand how the new layer (with mask) is generated. I would expect a copy of the original layer, with a mask that describes the selection. the mask appears how expected (by me at least), but the new pixel layer shows something weird (to me). in the attached image, if you hide everything except "layer - created by new layer and mask", strange artifacts are clearly visible. they disappear if the mask is activated again. if i make a copy of the original layer and apply a copy of the mask to it, the result is similar - but not identical: if you alternatively make visible the new layer or the background copy (with their masks), you can notice that something in the image subtly changes. if you make both the layer visible at the same time, the quality of the selection improves. it improves even more if you make a second copy of the background copy and mask. now, the improvement of quality does not surprise me so much: i guess it depends on the fact that the areas that are left erroneously slightly transparent by the mask get more opaque when displayed one above the other. but i really cannot understand why the new layer created by "refine selection" is not a copy of the original layer, and what the artifacts are. i'll be grateful of an explanation or any clue. thanks in advance stefano IMG_1904.afphoto
  22. Hi @all. I think i found a mistake in Photo on Windows. For example.... I open an image. Normally it´s a background layer, that´s ok. Then i place another image on top of the background layer, that´s ok too. Then i write a litte Text on top of this layer, ok. Now i make a selection from the textlayer by using STRG and klick on the miniature-image of the layer (it doesn´t matter if i use normal or graphical text) and i want to delete this selection in the layer among the textlayer, the complete layer will be deleted, not only the selection. On a backgrund layer it works well, there will be only the selection deleted, but not in a "normal" layer. I use Photo 1.6.2.97 and Beta 1.6.3.96 In both Versions it´s the same. I tryed it in Photoshop CS6 and there it works well. There only the selection will be deleted in a "normal layer" In the Screenshot you can see what i´ve done and so you can test it by yourself I found this mistake because i wantetd to rework a photoshop tutorial with photo. See there:https://www.photoshoptutorials.de/2011/02/26/hintergrundebene-–-was-soll-das-ganze-uberhaupt/ But in Photo i have to go ohter ways becaue some functions, wich are in use there, are missing in Photo. Best Regards from Germany Uwe
  23. Hi, I have a selection of electric wires which I would like to inpaint on a sky, ideally with inpainting being on a separate layer. However when I choose Edit/Inpaint or Edit/Fill/Inpaint it always samples from the current layer only, which is the empty layer I would like the inpainting to be on. I would like to do Inpaint of a selection with sampling from Current and Below. Adding an option to the Edit/Fill dialog would solve this issue.
  24. With CTRL+left click on a layer icon it is possible to create a selection from the contents of this layer. In PS (I know, AP is not PS...) you can use SHIFT or ALT as modifiers for adding to, subtracting from or intersecting with an existing selection. I would like to see this in AP, too. For adding two or more layers to a single selection there is at least a workaround: make a group from the layers you want the selection from and CTRL+left click the group layer icon to get a selection made of the "summed up" content of each of the grouped layers. However I haven't either figured out a way to realize the other operations or how to modify an existing selection with "selection from layer".
  25. Hi, Wondering if I can assign a keyboard shortcut on "Mask to Below" in the layer menu. Or can I assign shortcuts for the items in the layer menu? Thanks! CY
