  1. I am not sure if this is the right place for my post. I started doing design work with Photoshop and Freehand and later, when Adobe first bought and subsequently killed Freehand, with Illustrator. A few months ago I played around with Designer and Photo on both, an iMac and an iPad, and liked the experience. Most of all I liked that finally someone tried to come up with an alternative to Adobe. Sadly, since I decided to try and do a real paying design job on an iPad Pro using Designer and Photo my experience has been quite frustrating. Rather than doing actual design I had to search forums for the most basic (in my opion) features. Changing units from pt to mm? “Resize” in my opinion is a quite unlikely spot. Want pagerulers? No, this feature hasn’t made its way to the iPad yet. I am aware that I am surely stuck in the Adobe logic of where I expect to find certain functions and tools and how I expect them to operate but I am most certainly not the only one. As things stand right now with every step I want to make design wise I have to expect it to either not work or only after a considerable amount of time in the forums, this, simply, isn’t an option and step by step it takes me closer to goodbye Affinity and a sad hello Illustrator. In terms of actually asking something: - Rulers: really (really?) still not implemented in both iPad apps? - Guides: is there way to add guides to a specific artboard at a desired position without mathematical shenanigans? How can I edit and remove specific guides?
  2. Hello everyone! My first work in Affinity Designer. This is calendar for company that i am work for. Title say "electronics you need" Below is history how its evolve Hope you like it
  3. Is there a way to open/import AI files that have objects out of bounds? Most of my Illustrator files have objects all over the place. When opening AI file in Designer what you see is only what's on the artboard and in my case it's most of the times nothing. So I have to open Illustrator, move objects and then open the file in Designer. Thank you.
  4. Hi I am using Designer ver. 1.6.1 and is more than one time that I have problems to open AI/PDF file received, especially in fill gradient. Attached is the AI file received and the AD saved. Is a bug of the current version? regards Sergio Molino PFD error.zip
  5. It doesn't look like Affinity Designer can create it's own halftones from a gradient like Adobe Illustrator can. Am I correct in seeing this? Unfortunately that means seeing a bunch of tutorials online for drawing tons of tiny circles. I hate when I can't find the identical features. Anyone have a work around? See example of what I'm talking about. http://shirtoid.com/tutorials/halftone-gradient-in-illustrator/
  6. I use the iOS version of Designer to open (and convert) my illustrator files. I know that Designer‘s „import“ reads only the embedded Pdf-part of the ai-file, which is sad and on top of that on iOS it has problems with custom fonts (as there is no real font management on the iPad) But one problem drives me crazy: I make my designs and occasional floor-plans in Millimeters and every single imported file comes in as points. As I learned in other places in this forum, there is an option „resize“ which you can use th change the units to milimeter, but that resizes the documents contents the wrong way. Of course, because I don‘t really want to „resize“ - I want to „change the units“ or „KEEP ORIGINAL UNITS“ on import So please, if that‘s a feature request or a bug report - This works in the desktop version.
  7. I’m trying to find a workflow that allows me to go from Designer to Illustrator. Yes, yes, I know, but I still have to place work into the other on occasion. I would like to keep the results of the fx panel editable, but I realize that they might need to be rasterized if I want them to exist after the file transfer. Is there a preferred filetype/setup/practice for keeping the appearance of Designer files in Illustrator without absolutely everything winding up as path-masked raster images?
  8. There is a jubilee on Design Cuts. They sell a logo creation kit: Essential Branding & Identity Kit for Photoshop and Illustrator which says: there are also png files, that should work, I think. Maybe it is also a general question regarding Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Illustrator CS4 Thanks for help.
  9. Hello! So, my question is basically, "what's the big jump/difference between AP and AD?". I know this question has already been asked and the short answer is: "AP for pixel and photo editing and AD for vector-based graphics and illustration." Here's my point: I've been using Photoshop and Illustrator for a while but I'm transitioning to Affinity, 'cause it's lovely. I've been doing social media posts that mix images and graphics (text, shapes, graphic elements, etc) since before the transition, and it was clear to me the point where PS and AI intersected. I could not do "organic" strokes with the pen tool on Photoshop, neither could I edit text as curves. I couldn't work smoothly with gradients, merge shapes with complex operations—like pathfinder—and the list goes on. Photoshop was pretty limited in vector managing, and Illustrator couldn't do pixel work. Fast forward, I open Affinity Photo and it's like I don't need a vector software anymore. Everything I'd need to open Illustrator for is inside Affinity's pixel-based editor. As if it's not enough, AD can handle pixel manipulation—though I didn't use it enough to know its limits. I've tested both AP and AD during the free trial and, after expiration, bought Photo. I'm considering buying Designer now because their workflow together is pretty amazing, but do I really need it? What can Designer do that Photo can't? I feel like I can take the pen tool on Photo and create any shape I'd want, applying colors effortlessly. Can someone enlight me? Thanks!
  10. Hi, I'm wondering why Affinity Photo and Designer are opening PDF file in different colour than I can see it on MacOS native Preview app? File is package print design I got from client in PDF format. I believe it has been made originally using Illustrator. When I open it in Designer I see extra red layer with blending mode multiply over graphic layer. Not sure what is it's purpose. Any idea what I'm dealing with? Best, Juha
  11. I am tryingto open an Illustrator File into Designer. it is this template file from a print shop. It seems fine in Illustrator. 3.5X2-SMART-V2.ai. When I bring it into designer is not working out: As Ilustrator into Designer: As SVG 1.1 into Deigner: As Svg 1.0 I can’t figure it out>. Any one Smarter can help me>>>. 3.5X2-SMART-V2.ai I don’t what to do!!
  12. Hey Affinity, Will AD be able to import Adobe Illustrator vector brush libraries? Would be very handy to be able to tap into the thousands of brushes out there... Keep up the awesome work!
  13. I created some graphic in Affinity Designer and now I would like to send it to someone who uses Adobe Illustrator for further edit. How can I export file from Designer to preserve all objects, group, group/object names and etc.? I tried export PDF and EPS but it's a mess when opened in Adobe Illustrator. Please see screenshots. Is it even possible?
  14. I am of course very excited to get Affinity Designer into my workflow. But, there is the issue of round-tripping with Adobe. I know that Designer can output in many different formats. But can it output a file that is openable in Adobe illustrator? Is there that degree of backward compatibility if it is necessary?
  15. I am desperately trying to escape Adobe's stranglehold, and purchased Designer as an alternative to Illustrator. I create a lot of wine labels. The printer uses Illustrator for all its work, so the files I send need to be readable by Illustrator. I need to indicate where the the printers need to emboss, add silkscreen, foil, etc so I organize my AD file into layers. However when I export to PDF, and reopen the file in Illustrator, the entire structure is lost. I do see the layers preserved when I open the PDF in Acrobat however, so I find this confusing. Attached are screenshots of AD file, Acrobat view, and a couple in Illustrator showing the single layer will all the separate elements making the file unworkable. Also included is the original AD design file. Is this possible to achieve? LV_Cab_2016.afdesign
  16. I currently use Design Premium CS 6. I refuse Adobe's model of eternally renting its CC versions. I am looking for package that replaces my software. Does Affinity do this? Will it have an integrated package for my desktop publishing. Will it be able to read all the files I created with the Adobe Suite? I belong to InDesign Secrets. There is a group of us, about 25%, that haven't or won't upgrade to the CC versions. Is Affinity our savior? Lou
  17. When opening Adobe Illustrator files that contain grouped objects, those object are not grouped when opening in AD as they are in Illustrator. There are groups, but they seem to be random. Is this normal behavior of AD? If so, will there be a fix in the future?
  18. I have a number of old files from a previous degree that were created in CorelDraw (.cdr). These are both vector and image files, and were used as figures in my thesis. I discovered you can batch export files instead of individually, and took all of the .cdr files and exported to illsutrator (.ai). These appear to have exported properly (i.e., they have a file size that makes sense), but only open as blank documents in Affinity. I tried one of these same files as an export to PDF (which you cannot batch export) and it opened as a layered file in Affinity no problems. thoughts?
  19. Hi there, my client has decided after several months that they do in fact need the files to be usable in illustrator- yay! Does anyone know what the best export settings to use are? I've been using PDF with the dpi set to 400 so any bits which need to be rasterised still look sharp. Does anyone have any tips or tricks that would improve things further? Cheers!
  20. When importing an AI (Adobe Illustrator) file the guides are excluded from the import. This is pretty bad since many (printing) companies supply AI formated templates that only consists of guides, artboards and empty layers - none of that is imported by AD ... are there plans to improve that? Cheers, Timo
  21. I'm trying to make some sporty text logo and was wondering how best to do the warp effect where the top is straight but the lower edge/baseline of the text is curved. In illustrator you go to Effects > Warp > Arc lower, but was wondering if Designer has something like this?
  22. I'm working on a SkillShare tutorial to un-stuck myself and get back in to design. This problem seems silly, but I keep running into little hurdles in Affinity Design that I am having trouble surmounting. The current lesson has the vector watercolor strokes you see in picture one being turned into gradient strokes in picture 2. Picture 2 can probably be accomplished easily with a gradient map, but I'm failing to get the white-to-black transition in either pixel or vector brushes (Designer or Photo). I play with the controller and luminosity settings to no avail — my strokes all look flat and only show lightness or darkness when I overlap them. Suggestions warmly greeted! West Coast Namaste!
  23. Does tha current mac desktop version of affinity designer support import / export ou illustrator files? Thanks.
