  1. Hi, Affinity Forum! I recently purchased AD and AP to scratch an itch and start doing more of my own graphics design work. As I become accustomed to the software and develop my design skills, I lean on stock graphics websites for things I can't yet build myself. The problem is that I'm having a very hard time finding graphics and illustrations that can be reliably managed by AD/AP. It didn't take me long to figure out that free graphics are out, which is just as well because those sites are a nightmare to navigate. I also found that with many inexpensive graphics, AD would either report that the file doesn't contain a PDF stream so it can't be opened, or it would automatically assign a color palette to the file and it would look too distorted to use. Based on my experience, I think the problem isn't with AD/AP but my graphics sourcing. I've had a little bit of luck with VectorStock, but I haven't found any websites that track the kind of compatibility features that AD needs (like a PDF stream for .ai files). Has anyone come up with guidelines for AD/AP-safe stock graphics or identified any sites that are consistently reliable? Shutterstock seems like the obvious choice, but I want to see if there are any less expensive alternatives, or at least any sites that sell assets individually. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!
  2. When opening Adobe Illustrator files that contain grouped objects, those object are not grouped when opening in AD as they are in Illustrator. There are groups, but they seem to be random. Is this normal behavior of AD? If so, will there be a fix in the future?
  3. Hello, is it possible in af designer to copy the last object and copy its distance that i moved? like in illustrator, for example, i draw a circle, move to the side and press ctrl+d then the object and the movement is copied thank you
  4. I'm looking at Illustrator Styles and wondering if they're compatible with Designer as Photoshop Brushes are with Affinity Photo. Maybe the short answer is "No". Tried looking. Got 8 pages of results, none of the first I looked at addressed the specific question, so maybe this time will be a definitive answer for me and others who might be looking and wondering.
  5. Hello, I've been trying to export some documents for use on Adobe Illustrator, and one of the issues I'm encountering is the fact that all gradients are rasterized once the PDF file is opened on Illustrator. (The gradient is not rasterized whe I open it on Inkscape however, I can still edit it there) The thing is, just yesterday I tested some PDF export settings in Designer and actually managed to export editable gradients for illustrator, but I don't know if I didn't save those settings properly, but I cannot replicate this again. I don't have any files to attach, but I will continue to test the PDF settings. Please if anyone has an easier solution it'd be gratly appreciated!!
  6. This is a simple technique I use regularly to copy a path in Illustrator, then in After Effects I create a shape layer that I then paste onto so I can animate it (aka like a logo)...but while I can copy the path in Affinity Designer, After Effects doesn't paste it. Does anyone know why? And whether there is a solution or setting I can change that will enable this? This is kind of a vital feature I need in order to decouple from Illustrator. Thanks.
  7. Hello! I am a new user and I love the experience so far! But I have an issue... I can't export my files to AI without losing the paths. When opening the file in AI for editing the design is outlined.
  8. Hi all, I was wondering if someone knows a way to export svg with the content that is outside artboard? I have tried everything but only solution is to expand the artboard which isn't something I like to do.When I have a scene with elements outside the canvas like for example a car I would like to have all of the elements exported not only the visible one
  9. Hi, id like to ask if is possible to have in Affinity Designer a effect similar to Ai Zig Zag? Maybe with custom brushes, effects or some kind of trick, maybe? Is that even possible? Thanks
  10. Hi, This is my first attempt at using Affinity Designer and have come to a hurdle; I am trying to edit the text on an existing logo that was created in AI. I cannot seem to be able to select the text, is this maybe because it has been rasterised? Is there a way I can do this please? Thanks.
  11. The closest I can find in the Help guide is the Pen Tool in either "Pen" Mode or "Smart" Mode, but I'm not very skilled (if anti-skilled were a thing, I'd use that) at using the Pen Tool. Is there a "pre-fabricated" tool like what Illustrator or iDraw has for those of us falling into the "Artistically Deficient" category? ;)
  12. Hi, There's a function hidden away in Illustrator that I actually use often. It's "Paste Remembers Layers." This is a frequent scenario I encounter: usually I work in separate documents in order to create a finished piece. Lots of layers. Then I paste what I've done into the one "Master" piece. I'd like to retain the layers I created. Is this functionality in the software and I'm missing it? Or perhaps slated for a future version? Thanks!
  13. Hi all! I am considering making the switch from Adobe Illustrator to Affinity Designer. I am wondering how I can replicate a similar result with Illustrator's shapes tool in Designer. In Illustrator, I had the following workflow: Add two lines. Add a circle. Select all shapes. Activate the shapes tool (shortcut shift-M on a Mac). Hold alt, hover and select the exterior of the circle to "cut" away that portion, thus leaving two lines with an angle (arc) in between. I would like to know how I can "cut" away a circle in Designer, leaving just the arc/angle between the two rays. I am trying to make some mathematics diagrams. The image below was created with two lines using the pen tool and then adding an ellipse. Unfortunately, when I select all 3 items, I get strange results when messing around with the geometry tools (subtract, xor, divide, etc.). Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!
  14. Is there a way in Affinity Designer to quickly copy a text style? In Illustrator it was fairly easy to do that with the eye dropper too since that worked both as a colour picker as well as a text style picker. I just want to be able to select a text block and quickly apply the style and format of another text block. I can't seem to find a quick way in Affinity Designer. Thanks!
  15. Decided to have a little fun and made this digital sketch of Bernie Sanders 😁
  16. I made this illustration based on a picture book from the 1960s with illustrations made by Doris Dumler. I tried to recreate it using Designer, usng the Shinznizzle styles for texture and patterns. It was interesting how a convincing mid-century look can be recreated.
  17. I'm working in affinity for last 6 months now and I despise Illustrator. I can't stop talking about how anti-intuitive is Illustrator. But they have an undoubtedly nice feature called package. It saves the raw file, the fonts involved and other things plus a report in a folder. Can we do the same in Affinity somehow? That report document is very important when we work for clients or with other designers to know what kind of colour space and font and etc etc was used on the specific project.
  18. Hello, I downloaded this file https://www.freepik.com/free-vector/bacteria-infection-virus-flu-background_7080504.htm from freepik. The EPS file opening properly on illustrator but opening as a image file only in Affinity Designer. I attached the EPS file. 23913.eps
  19. So I tried Illustrator for iPad... it turns out Serif doesn’t have any competition 😅 for starters, the pen tool was kinda janky especially when closing a shape(if Adobe can’t even get the basics right...), no width variance features for strokes or corner smoothing, and for €10 a month!? Vector software has to at least get these fundamentals working out of the box or it’s a 👎 from me. Anyone lose have a better experience?
  20. Affinity Forums Hello friends, greetings from Honduras, now will share a link to download vectors and more. link: http://es.all-free-download.com The site is ideal for use with Affinity Designer. greetings To You
  21. We open a lot of Illustrator files in Affinity Designer. Normally this works great. Now we have an Illustrator file where the text will not load into AD. There is not a single text block loaded in the document. Not even missing fonts. When we export to PDF from Illustrator and open the PDF in Edge or Adobe Reader the text is displayed perfectly. When importing that PDF into AD everything disappears again. When I use Ghostscript to convert the AI to PDF the PDF is also displayed ok in the browser or Adobe Reader. When opening in AD I get some missing fonts. When I replace them with another font the text loaded is gibberish. It seems like the wrong encoding or something. Also when copying the text from the pdf, the same thing occurs. issue.ai illustrator-exported.pdf ghostscript-converted.pdf
  22. Here’s a suggestion, Serif need to capitalise on the fact the recent Illustrator release for iPad is brutal. Demonstrate how you get way more bang for your buck in terms of features and abilities, and all without being locked into a subscription. Seriously, get some live demos out there while the iron’s hot and steal the limelight. Designer has so much potential, routing for y’all 🤘
  23. HI to all I am try to open file coming from Illustrator and Designer lost all the Group and Layer, in complex file is quite a big problem. There is a solution? Thank you for any help 14.ai
  24. Hey Guys, I'm a fashion design student and I switched from Adobe Illustrator to Affinity Desginer. I don't want to use AD just for drawings but for technical drawings too. My problem: in Illustrator I had brushes for zippers and stitches. Everytime I drew a straight line I could change the brush into a zipper or a stitch but for AD there is nothing like this pre made brushes available (or haven't found it yet). So, is it possible that someone can explain me how I make this brushes in AD or it would be nice if someone do it for me I attached you the ad file with the pre made shapes This is how they look Thank you in advance Fashion Brushes.afdesign
