  1. Hey, something i'm terribly missing (and that I use a lot in Illustrator) is the expand stroke function. This lets you convert a stroke of any object into a fill. Sometimes this handy in logo's (because sometimes the strokes are not scaled proportionally and your logo is ruined when scaling). thanks! benjamin
  2. Would love to give Designer another shot, but I use sublayers in my AI files for mainly organizational purposes. When importing .ai file into Designer it brings in layers, but the sublayers are gone, so all the "insides" of the layers (hundreds of items) are all flat in the parent layers. Attached screenshots of a piece of my AI files layers and what I get in Designer.
  3. Hi There, I'm brand new to Affinity Designer so might be doing something wrong but after placing a logo from illustrator (.eps) it has a white background (see attached image). I've made sure it doesn't have a background colour (swatches) but no luck. I found this thread but no answer that I could see: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/3243-remove-eps-white-background/?hl=eps+white+background Does anyone know how to make placed eps files transparent? Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated. Cheers Ben
  4. Hey Affinity, Will AD be able to import Adobe Illustrator vector brush libraries? Would be very handy to be able to tap into the thousands of brushes out there... Keep up the awesome work!
  5. Hi, There's a function hidden away in Illustrator that I actually use often. It's "Paste Remembers Layers." This is a frequent scenario I encounter: usually I work in separate documents in order to create a finished piece. Lots of layers. Then I paste what I've done into the one "Master" piece. I'd like to retain the layers I created. Is this functionality in the software and I'm missing it? Or perhaps slated for a future version? Thanks!
  6. I've noticed some strangeness when importing my *.ai files in Affinity Designer. You can do this test to see what I am seeing: 1. In Illustrator, sketch a rectangle and color it 100% K (in a CMYK file), then make it 60% transparent. 2. Save a PDF compatible *.ai file. 3. Open your *.ai file in AD. 4. Note inside "Layer 1" you have "(Group)" and inside that you have "(Curve)" 5. Note the "Opacity" slider in the "Color" tab is set to 100%. 6. With "Layer 1" selected in the Layers palette, decrease that "Opacity" slider (the one OUTSIDE the Layers palette) to say 50% and you can see your object lighten but the "Opacity" slider snaps back to 100%. Do that again when you have "(Group)" selected and the same thing happens. But do that when you have "(Curve)" selected and your chosen value sticks! Strange. Very strange. 7. Note that you can also change the separate "Opacity" slider that resides inside the Layers palette. And only "(Group)" shows 50% (the value you set in Photoshop), while "Layers 1" and "(Curve)" show 100%. All this is very confusing to me. First of all, why not just import than single object as a single object? Why create two objects "(Group)" and "(Curve)"? Next, what is different about the Opacity slider in the Color tab, which sits just millimeters away from the separate Opacity slider inside the Layers palette? Sorry if my questions are confusing but I myself am confused. Thanks.
  7. I have been looking already long time for an alternative for Illustrator, but I am working for stock agencies, and they insist on Illustrator compatible EPS vector files. Unfortunately, it seems like Affinity Designer Eps does not work well with Illustrator. I created a very simple test file, just a circle filled with a simple radial gradient, only two massive colors, no effects, no transparency, and saved it in EPS format. By saving I have chosen the option ( I have german interface, so i don't know how it sounds in English) „allow no rasterizing at all“. After opening EPS file in Illustrator gradient was rasterized. To be sure I created a few more files with gradients, as simple as the first and they all did not work in Illustrator. By saving the same files as SVG gradients got saved, I was able to edit them after opening in Illustrator. Did I anything wrong, or are EPS gradients exported from Affinity Designer generally not compatible with Illustrator? It would be really sad, I was so happy to find an alternative for Illustrator for my stock illustrations, but without option to create gradients it is not really an alternative. Can you help me?
  8. For those of you who needs Pantone colors support in Affinity Designer before the Serif team release an official support in it, here is a trick you can do. Firstly, you need an Adobe Illustrator licence to be able to do this, or install a demo version of Illustrator. Then you need to install SwatchBooker. http://www.selapa.net/swatchbooker/ Or you compile it yourself to get a Mac version, or you use it under Linux, or use it with Windows. Personally, I installed the Windows version into a CrossOver bottle and it works out of the box. Launch SwatchBooker Editor, in the File menu, select Open and choose one of your Pantone library in Illustrator. Then in the File menu, select Save as and select *.ase for the file format. Launch Affinity Designer and go to the swatches panel, click on the menu and choose import palette, as system or software, as you want. Select your exported *.ase color library. And that's it, you have loaded in Affiinty Designer your Pantone colors library.
  9. Bit of an emergency here! I have some files imported form Illustrator which I'm now doing additional work on. It seems for whatever reason that the stroke weighting isn't exporting correctly. This happens in 1.2.1 and the latest beta. 25410 (see the attached image, screen grab from AD then exported asset). I can only think it's because the file originally came from illustrator, if I create a new document, stroke width exports correctly. I can send the file if need be? Cheers, Mal
  10. I know this may seem picayune, but... I've spent a LOT of time the last 15 years building up swatch libraries and my own internal graphic style libraries to make illustrative site plans and elevations quick to produce and effective to do with interns etc. I would LOVE if Affintiy Designer could import these once, and then convert them to Affinity Styles...
  11. When importing text boxes from an .ai file, the text comes in as Artistic (stretch the boundary box and the letters change size rather than rearranging themselves to fit as many words as possible within the box's width). Is there a way to convert that type of text into ...and I don't know the term... "regular" text?
  12. The closest I can find in the Help guide is the Pen Tool in either "Pen" Mode or "Smart" Mode, but I'm not very skilled (if anti-skilled were a thing, I'd use that) at using the Pen Tool. Is there a "pre-fabricated" tool like what Illustrator or iDraw has for those of us falling into the "Artistically Deficient" category? ;)
  13. I use Indesign quite heavily for book and magazine layout I produce for a range of publishers, so would like to think I know my short cuts and my way around around Indesign. but this does make me struggle formatting lots of copy when jumping back to Affinity (example left aligning I would typically hit cmd L which is not so in Affinity Designer). So Affinity is done the Apple way, which is not bad if you start fresh, but I have a sneaky feeling this will put off switches handy in shortcuts from Indesign and Illustrator to the upcoming Affinity Publisher and Affinity Designer if all the short cuts need re-learning from the off start. So my question is this....Is it possible to have Adobe shortcuts as an toggled option in preferences?
  14. When I open an .ai file, the PDF Options window opens. There's a checkbox labeled "Favour editable text over fidelity." What does that mean in terms of subsequently working with the document?
  15. Hi, as an industrial designer I'm using Rhino (Nurbs-Modeling) to create paths from 3D objects which are then handed over to Illustrator. The .ai file exported from rhino is opened by illustrator but not by Designer. It seems like they use something like an older version .AI (attached) It would be great if the .ai importer is able to read these files. Then I (and some other 3D guys) could drop Illustrator altogether. Thanks for considering. test.AI
  16. I have been using Illustrator for what seems forever, tried the Designer Trial for the first time today and I'm very impressed at its ease of use and features. One thing I can't do without is the ablility to have the software calculate the area of a closed path (I design and hand print fabric and use this to determine quantities for textile inks...) I use a plug-in for this in Illustrator. Is there any way to determine path area with Affinity Designer?
  17. Affinity Forums Hello friends, greetings from Honduras, now will share a link to download vectors and more. link: http://es.all-free-download.com The site is ideal for use with Affinity Designer. greetings To You
  18. As it says above, keep the document's layer structure when the file is exported to pdf format. Thanks
  19. I am trying to use Affinity with my colleague who uses Adobe Illustrator (latest version). He saved a file as an EPS and I tried to open it with Affinity, it was a total disaster. He then saved it as an AI file and it is not as bad but still does not look the same. I thought this was supposed to be totally compatible with AI?
  20. Illustrator .ai file export would be nice. Exporting to EPS files for After effects just don't cut it. You can't edit the vector paths or access layers. :( Thanks for considering :)
  21. Affinity Designer is fantastic. Not because I'm a great drawer or illustrator. I'm printing and prepress professional and in the past week I have had two times where it Illustrator or Indesign could not take an existing PDF and deal with the file right. Designer was able to bring in the PDF and let us alter it to get the vector logo out. I do this regularly but I usually don't get errors importing into Illustrator but I did on this one and Designer saved us. Today a font was not embedded in a PDF that someone created in Corel. We were able to install the font on the Mac, open the PDF in Affinity, adjust a little bit because the person did a poor job designing and resaved - the ad came out perfect! I'm looking forward to the page layout program with how well Designer is working.
  22. Hi folks; maybe this already exists somewhere and I wasn't able to find it by now, if not, then consider this to be a request: When I'm drawing something inside Illustrator, I can hit SPACEBAR to readjust the position of my point or shape as I'm drawing. This was one of the first things I missed when trying out Affinity. It's not like drawing a point, hitting a, changing its position and then continue drawing would be such a bug deal, but that Spacebar-thing really helps getting into Hyperflowmode. Something that AD is usually quite good at :) So keep it coming guys, cheers
  23. Just did my first simple project. The art was intended for use in Adobe After Effects. I need to keep the art as vector art and the layers need to be kept intact when imported into AE. Photoshop does not work because the vector art is rasterized. EPS does not work because the separate layers are not recognized by AE. To my knowledge, only native AI files work for this in AE. Thanks.
  24. Hi every one, Assalam Alikom I have been sent Affinity file to my friend because I want her to make some edits. She use illustrator so she cant open the file. 25. Hello Guys! I made a small tutorial about the similarities between the Adobe Illustrator/Affinity Designer basic tools. I thought there might be some people coming from Ai who are interested. http://www.mediomix.de/affinity-designer-basics-spot-comparison-adobe-illustrator-tools/
