  1. I don’t normally use HSL colours so this is a new area for me. In my attached image I have two rectangles, each with a horizontal linear gradient fill. The top rectangle gradient goes from RGB 0, 0, 0 on the left to RGB 255, 0, 0 on the right and that looks as I would expect (the colour at the middle point is RGB 128, 0, 0, as can be seen in the little square below it). However, the bottom rectangle gradient goes from HSL 0, 100, 50 on the left to HSL 360, 100, 50 on the right but I don’t get the colours in-between the two as I can see in the “H” slider of the Colour Chooser. I would have expected – possibly naively – that the middle point of the gradient would be coloured as can be seen in the little square underneath (manually chosen colour), and I would get all of the other colours too, but it’s not. Am I doing something wrong? Is there some fundamental thing which I’m not understanding about HSL? I did a little searching in the forums but didn’t notice anything relevant. Some related questions but no answers that explained it (to me). (I’ve also attached the document for people to experiment with.) HSL-on-gradient.afdesign
  2. I'm currently working in Designer to create vector artwork, and a few of the designs are getting a little more complex than I'm usually used to and I'm having trouble trying to fill in shapes - my designs are eventually printed onto posters and clothing. I have a few options when it comes to filling in but feel they are unorthodox or won't give me the desired print quality at 300dpi. 1. At the moment I have been creating the line work from an image, tracing the main outlines of shapes. This has resulted in a lot of open lines. I have then been keeping the lines in a separate layer from the colour layer. This also includes a lot of duplicating shapes, breaking lines and joining them together with others to be able to then fill the shape on the colour layer and turning off the stroke. Overall this method feels very clunky and effects my work flow, it also gets quite confusing, never quite knowing which outline is connected to which colour and any small movement of a shape will ruin the piece. I feel like this whole process could be improved with a 'smart fill bucket tool' similar to what is is AI. IS there a suitable work around for this missing tool, or is the the quickest method? 2. I haven't actually used this method yet, but it is something I have thought about quite recently which i think could improve my workflow in lieu of the magic fill bucket tool - however not sure if this will hamper the quality of my print by leaving Designer to colour in Photo. I have both Designer and Photo. My idea was to use the appropriate print template i have supplied for my garments all at the correct dimensions and at 300DPI to create my line work. I would then open the line work in Photo and use my tablet and pen to paint in the colours between the lines. I feel like this would improve my work flow tenfold, but advice regarding the print quality would be appreciative - or even if this is a poor method. Look at this is would increase the speed of my design work. I think I'm just scared/paranoid to leave Designer and have my Designs raterized as opposed to working with crips, sharp vectors. Its worth noting that at the moment my designs are flat colour designs without gradients/shading at the moment and my designs are exported asP NGs at 300dpi Many thanks in advance! Would also love to hear your own work flows regarding the filling of complex vectors.
  3. Hi there. I'm wanting to start giving my drawing colour but not sure where to start. I think i need to join up some of the lines, but not sure what the most effective method is. I have pretty much drawn what i have seen using the pen tool, and not sure how to start adding colour. There are a few "open" lines which have not been closed. How would you tackle colouring this?
  4. Hello ! I really appreciate using Affinity Photo for making illustrations, however there is something that ruins its potential when coloring a lineart. Every other pixel editing softwares I tried (Photoshop, Krita) allows the user to extend the fill selection in order to spill the color to the middle of the lineart pen strokes (for instance). I've attached a sample of the fill results made in Photo and in Krita, along with Krita's fill settings. The color is a different layer below the lineart layer. This pretty basic feature would increase a lot the speed of coloring simple flat drawings. Thank you in advance.
  5. Hi, I have a simple shape (attached) I'm trying to fill, but despite all the curves being joined it still fills as though they're individual curves. When I joined the last joint it all lit up as yellow, which I assume means it's one joined profile. I also tried several other methods, like drawing each as individual shaped and using 'Join Curves' but not matter what I do I cant get this shape to fill. I'm trying to make the transition from Illustrator to Affinity Designer but problems like this make the transition very difficult. I ended up using my old MAC version of illustrator to do it. Am I missing something? it shouldn't be this difficult. Test.afdesign
  6. Changing a gradient type when using the Fill Tool adds huge amounts of the same entry, "Set fill type", to be added to the History panel. This is to the point that it will push everything else away, leaving only these repeated entries in the History panel, essentially denying you any way to undo your work. Steps to reproduce: Create or select an object With the Fill Tool drag across the object to create a simple gradient On the context bar at the bottom, scroll to another fill type, like conical Watch as the History panel get absolutely overwhelmed with the same entry over and over I've actually manage to crash the app doing this, but it doesn't happen always See the attached video for a visual guide on how to trigger this issue. Workaround while this bug isn't fixed: With your object selected, DO NOT trigger the fill type popup by tap the fill type name Instead tap the arrows to the left and right of the fill type name Each tap on these arrows will only had one entry to the History panel If you accidentally trigger the fill type popup, either tap away to close it or directly tap once on another fill type, NEVER SCROLL THROUGH THE LIST Directly tapping another fill type on the popup still adds two duplicate entries to the History panel, but that's still better than flooding it and loosing your undo ability Thanks! 7. I am struggling to find the setting to remove the small crop icon on an image that is filled into a shape. The image is not visible as a second layer and the layer is ticked and not hidden
  8. Inverting a fill layer seems to make it transparent. I thought the fill colour would invert.
  9. Hello... fairly new to Affinity. I like it a lot. I checked the tutorials, and I could not figure out how to do this. I figured there are probably different methods, so I wanted some general help. I tried to upload the jpg, and it gave me a -200 error. So I uploaded the afphoto document instead. In this photograph of a red-winged starling in Cape Town, South Africa, there is a leaf from a palm tree in front of the bird. What can you recommend as the best way to remove this leaf, and fill in the area with the blackish color of the bird. You are welcome to download the document and tinker with it, and send it back to me. I look forward to your response. 2019_10a_Cape_Town-005.afphoto
  10. I need to fill shapes with images, in Designer. I've watched a tutorial which instructs me to create the Shape and then drag the desired Image (already in the working space) up onto the Shape. In the tutorial, the shape fills with the image on both the Artboard and the Context dashboard . However, when I try the same actions, nothing happens. See screen-shots below. I have a project due TODAY. Need an answer ASAP pls. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
  11. In Affinity Photo 1.8.3.641, if you are creating vector shapes with a transparent color as the foreground and then switch to the Paint Brush Tool, the transparent primary color in the inkwell icon will switch to white, but the brush will retain the transparency from the previous mode, so when you try to paint, the brush will not paint white but be "off". You have to click on the small Transparency circle in the bottom left corner of the inkwell tool for it to display correctly. Display error is consistent on both the Tools Panel 2-column inkwell icon and the one in the Color Studio. Examples of the inkwell icon/tool:
  12. Howdy folks - I seem to run into this enough to warrant asking how I should do it. I want to fill in the top and bottom segments of this object with a solid color (indicated by the squiggly lines). I changed the outside curve to red to indicate the way this was created. Is it possible to select those top four corner points and create a single object? Or do I simply have to draw the shape manually?
  13. I am designing something and i made this tree with the pencil tool i made each stroke separately and grouped them all together after connecting them then when i tried to fill it. The first image is what happen how do i just fill the inside of the tree?
  14. Hi there, Affinity Publisher is having troubles interpreting a certain kind of fill surface. Iam using Allplan (CAD-Software for architecture) and all Affinity programs cannot interpret these fillings. We use Allplan to Export PDF-Files which we then import into Affinity for layouting. Instead of a color gradient called "from the middle" in Allplan, all Affinity programs show a dark grey. Is there any fix? because we really like to use these kind of fillings. Picture 1 shows false Affinity interpretation. Picture 2 shows how it is shown correctly in Acrobat
  15. Hey guys, I'm not quite sure how to achieve this. I'd like an objects fill to be transparent, but remove all the intersecting paths/lines behind where the fill of the front objects would otherwise cover up. You can see below (attached image), the desired outcome is on the left, but when I make the fill transparent, you get the result on the right. This is probably simple but I can't think of the right tool or technique to use. So I'd like to keep the strokes shown on the left but have the fill transparent without any strokes behind appearing. Any help is much appreciated!
  16. I'd like the inside the map outline to be yellow. How do I do that? I'm working in Designer.
  17. I searched the site and faq without luck. I have an outlined font that I want to fill the whitespace with a gradient. I tried converting the typed text to curves and it appears to have made a single bezier line through the entire glyph (take a C and put a line on the surrounding the inner continuing to the outer edge and then close the C to an O keeping the lines). So, it's treating the text strokes as fill-able but not the whitespace. The attached how do I fill outlineed font with a gradient.pdf shows it well Is there an way without converting to bitmaps (yuck)? Thanks❗️
  18. Hello all, I've just starting using Affinity designer (trail) and like it very much. I have a little problem though and I'm sure that when someone points out what I'm doing wrong I'll kick myself. I've applied a gradient to an object and now want to return it to a solid fill but I cant find a way of removing the gradient. If I create another fill and apply it always is set to gradient when I apply it the object. I've tried setting no fill creating a new fill then applying it but always its a gradient fill! I'm sure the solution is simple and obvious but I'm missing something here. Thanks in advance, Anthony
  19. I am transitioning from InDesign to Affinity Publisher. I have an InDesign document that has text with a black stroke and green fill. The letters really pop! (I'm attaching a sample.) Is there any way to achieve this effect in Publisher?
  20. Hi - I've been tinkering with Publisher and want to leave the current program I use, but am stuck on what's probably a simple solution. I'm trying to fill a rectangle and want the fill to transition horizontally like in the attachment, but I can only get it to vertically, blue on left, red in middle, yellow on right. I'm sure there's something very simple I'm missing, but I can't figure it out. In the program I currently use, there's an "angle" adjust to rotate the fill to any orientation I want. Thanks!
  21. I was wondering at how I'd be able to recreate the content aware fill (on photoshop) shown in this video (at 1:45). Does affinity have something like this? I've tried using the inpainting brush tool, but could not really achieve a good result on a panorama I'm working on with AP (attached).
  22. Hello, an somebody tell me why when I try to fill a shape it fills outside of the lines? (Like in the image)
  23. Hi, I cannot add a second style with the same fill and stroke colour to the 'styles'. I'm trying to save some styles to the styles menu. They have the same fill and stroke colours but they have a different dash length/pattern. So when I try to add a second one to the styles menu, it doesn't let me do that. I think AD sees this as a duplicate and therefor doesn't let me add it. Only when I change the the colour of it. Anyone out there who can help me out? Thanks
  24. Dear forum, I have an annyoing issue with using artboards in Affinity designer: In pixel mode, as well as in pdf exports, I get a very small, but noticeable white or light-coloured edge on my objects. This is only noticeable in affinity on zooms of 10000% but easily noticeable in pdfs on lower zoom levels (See scrawly annotated attachement). I already tried adjusting the contour, deselecting any effects, as well as playing around with edge or radius options. This for me makes artboards completely useless, as in print outputs (where I normally use them) this issue is fatal. I hope that anyone could suggest any hints! Thank you very much!
  25. Hi, I'm trying to fill a capital 'O' without filling in the middle of it. As seen in the attached screenshots. I found a post with the same issue, there they were told to select the individual curve layers rather than the group, and then change the fill mode in the layers menu to "Alternative (Even-Odd)". However, I tried this and it didn't seem to work. Is there something I'm doing wrong or something else that might work? Cheers
